Why isn't Della Reese remembered as a singer?
Because she is best known for Touched by an Angel...and Chico and the Man!

because she is known as an old fat angel
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 24, 2020 4:54 AM |
Because her recording career ended in the early 70s. She was a great singer and recording artist.

Oprah Winfrey to play old Della in the biopic

I think, ultimately, the question will be "Why isn't Della Reese remembered?" I didn't know she could sing, and I've only seen her in Touched by an Angel

She was in Redd Fox's last sitcom, The Royal Family. Remember he dropped dead on the set (like John Ritter did on the set of 8 Simple Rules).

She will always be my favorite TV angel unlike that cunt Roma Downey.

A friend of mine who knew her once described her as "a nasty old dyke," and then added (with a shudder), "Of course, I knew back when she was with Kaye Ballard..."
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 24, 2020 7:30 PM |
So she was a singer known for her ballards, R14?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 24, 2020 7:38 PM |
I only knew her as an older actress.
Really surprised at how gorgeous she was.

She was a good Christian woman. She was an ordained minister of some sort and founded her own church.

Don’t worry, I don’t remember her at all let alone just as a singer.

There were many gays in her congregation. I don't know if they were accepted or just welcomed but they were there.

Della was an ordained minister of the Unity church, a branch of New Thought. They do not condemn homosexuality. She was an excellent preacher and I think some of her messages are still on Youtube. Very enlightening and she strived to help people find clarity in life.

I watched some of her sermons on youtube and I really enjoyed them.
Wasn't Della's Touched by an Angel co-star John Dye gay?

That was the rumor, but he was never openly gay.

R24, "was"? Did John Dye, er, die?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 26, 2020 2:37 AM |
Because she co-starred in crap like Touched by an Angel and Harlem Nights.

Is it just me? I picture Della having had really funky feet with big long yellow toenails.
I bet she went through a lot of size 14 wedgies on Touched By An Angel.

Coming in late, but dead or alive?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 26, 2020 3:59 AM |
Della had a few hit songs but from my viewpoint she wasn't much of singer - her voice sounded too low, almost mannish. But she seems to be a great gal on the whole, and as someone pointed out, a minister for the Unity Church.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 26, 2020 4:27 AM |

Della Reese was married 4 times, including the last 40 yrs of her life. In the 70s she was fucking WKRP’s Tim Reid who was a decade younger. You and your friend both are probably full of shit.

Which would make him bisexual, not gay and not a lesbian (as was suggested about Della Reese).
Which he also retracted.
Datalounge likes to pretend that bisexuality does not exist.

Della was not a lesbian. However many black women in showbusiness in her era were fluid, particularly the ones who came up as gospel singers.

There are gay rumors about everyone who ever worked in “show business.” Im not sure that = an abundance of fluidity.

R47, in particular many well-known black female gospel singers of the 50s and 60s were known to engage in same-sex sexual activity. It was something more real than the "showbusiness" generalization.

Richard Dawson (Hogan's Heroes, Family Feud) guest hosted on The Tonight Show in 1979-1980. Della was a guest and, during the taping of the show, had a NEAR-FATAL aneurysm. Of course that episode/interview never aired.

Her peak was back in the 50s/60s. She probably had a Nancy Wilson-level of fame---Wilson was largely forgotten when she died fairly recently.
Reese never had the level of fame or range of respect that Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughn achieved. She also didn't have the range, esp. of Fitzgerald., who will be remembered for a long time to come.

”You came a long way from St. Louis”! I used to pantomime this one from my Mom’s records. Love Della!!

Utter nonsense. Nancy Wilson was a jazz icon. She had a long prolific and incredibly successful career. Which included music, television and a radio show on public radio. She didn’t retire until a few yrs before she died. She was far from forgotten.

Nancy Wilson died?!!

I only heard her sing later in life and it was...not good. I always wondered why she wanted to sing so much - she never gave good performances when she was older.
Had no idea she once had a good voice and was known as a singer.

Ridiculous. In the 60s, Nancy Wilson was the second-biggest album seller at Capitol Records, second only to The Beatles. She was a major recording artist and live performer. She recorded for Capitol for nearly 20 years. As a recording artist, Della Reese was not on the same level as Nancy Wilson.
