Claire Danes "Didn't Quite Know What the Consequences Would Be" of Dating Billy Crudup

In late 2003, Crudup and his girlfriend of 8 years, Mary-Louise Parker (who, at the time, was about 7 months pregnant with his son), broke up. The New York Post reported that Crudup had moved on to his Stage Beauty co-star Danes, a claim which Danes’s rep denied. “Claire has been friends with Billy for 10 years,” the My So-Called Life star’s publicist told People. It’s unclear then exactly when and where Crudup and Danes met, though they did both serve as voice talent in 1997 anime film Princess Mononoke.

Regardless of the timeline, Crudup and Danes’s friendship certainly evolved into something more. By the summer of 2004, the former co-stars had been “spotted nuzzling all over New York City.”

Despite the obvious sensationalism surrounding the relationship (and the “nuzzling”), both parties worked hard to keep the details of their romance private. There was no couch-jumping and love-proclaiming on the Stage Beauty press tour.

In October of 2004, Crudup was pressed to address the delicate situation in a New York Times interview. In an email sent to the reporter, Crudup asked for “anything about the Mary-Louise Parker situation” to be excised from the piece. “First and foremost it is personal, painful and involves an infant, and does not deserve to be exploited to sate the appetites of circulation counters and bored readers,” Crudup wrote. “I have never indulged our society's misguided notion that my personal life is relevant to my work, so any reporting surrounding that is necessarily hearsay, speculation or fantasy. Each published report is based only on the trade of suffering.”

It wasn’t until years after their split that Danes said anything at all about her relationship with Crudup (and the media drama that followed it). “That was a choice I made to fall in love,” she told Blackbook in 2009. “It’s unpleasant to be cast in such an unflattering role [in the tabloids], but I just had to remain steadfast. I was living with the same kind of integrity that I had always lived with. It’s not nice to be ridiculed — nobody wants that — but it’s also unavoidable.”

She referenced Crudup again in 2013, telling Vogue that “dating Billy” was transitional in her adulthood. “I was segueing into: ‘I’m a grown-up now,’” she said.

Two years later, Howard Stern (naturally) coaxed even more from Danes regarding that tabloid-heavy time in her life. “That was a scary thing. It was really hard,” she said of the public backlash. “I didn’t know how to not do that. I was just in love with him, and needed to explore that, and I was 24 ... I didn’t quite know what those consequences would be. But it’s OK. I went through it.”

About two years and one shared SoHo loft later, Crudup and Danes parted ways. Naturally, the ultra-private couple didn’t discuss the reason behind their breakup, but the tabloids were happy to do so for them. Gossip rags claimed that Danes had left Crudup for her Evening co-star (and current husband) Hugh Dancy. The truth? Well, we’ll probably never really know it.

Danes wed Dancy in 2009. They welcomed their first son, Cyrus, in 2012, and their second son, Rowan, in 2018.

Crudup has been romantically linked to his Gypsy co-star Naomi Watts since 2017.

WTF did she think was going to happen? Nobody likes a homewrecker, especially when it comes at the expense of a 7 month pregnant woman

by Anonymousreply 1July 24, 2020 12:16 AM

Straight guys really are shitty.

How do you leave your wife who is seven months pregnant with your kid?

That is so fucked up.

Still, at least Claire wasn't cancelled.

She won an Emmy after that, and she's working steadily.

Hollywood can forgive a homewrecker.

by Anonymousreply 2July 24, 2020 12:21 AM

At the time, someone told me that they thought Crudup left Parker because the kid was not his but did not say anything because he was a gentleman.

They had no basis to say this, but it is a good reminder that we do not really know what goes on privately.

by Anonymousreply 3July 24, 2020 12:23 AM

I thought Claire Danes was sort of gross during that whole thing with Billy Crudup. I’m a huge Mary-Louise Parker fan (I was somewhat obsessed with the movie Fried Green Tomatoes in high school) and naturally took her side in the whole thing.

I always thought it was funny how the movie Crudup and Danes did together flopped. I didn’t really like Danes again until Homeland.

by Anonymousreply 4July 24, 2020 12:23 AM

What about Temple Grandin, R4?

by Anonymousreply 5July 24, 2020 12:27 AM

You can't really blame Claire.

She was only 24 years old FFS. You're going to make those kinds of mistakes.

by Anonymousreply 6July 24, 2020 12:28 AM

All actors are whores.

by Anonymousreply 7July 24, 2020 12:29 AM

Well, his name is CRUDUP ffs; what did she expect?!?

by Anonymousreply 8July 24, 2020 12:30 AM

R6 that isn’t a mistake. And at 24 I wasn’t stealing a pregnant persons man. I would have never.

by Anonymousreply 9July 24, 2020 12:33 AM

Mary Louise Parker’s son is named William Atticus Parker so it’s got to be Crudup’s kid.

by Anonymousreply 10July 24, 2020 12:34 AM

It*s quite tragic and wholly unusual - at least among actresses - how Danes only looked good as a teenager. Maybe she only looks good with red hair, but why wouldn't she wear it then? Adult Danes seems very unlikable as well. Not a fan, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 11July 24, 2020 12:34 AM

I don’t care for this woman for what she did then. And I like her even less after hearing what she says now. She’s as dumb and selfish now as she was then.

by Anonymousreply 12July 24, 2020 12:36 AM

Truth be told, Hollywood loves female homewreckers.

by Anonymousreply 13July 24, 2020 12:37 AM

If you're going to be a famous actor and you still want a private life (which in itself is pretty counter-intuitive), then dating other famous actors in the United States is ridiculous. He's a hypocrite and so is she.

by Anonymousreply 14July 24, 2020 12:40 AM

The child's name doesn't really tell us whose kids he is. I'd think if he was Crudup's he might have his name as Baby Crudup or Crudup-Parker. Maybe it's not his. Parker would not want that known cause it makes her the bad guy.

by Anonymousreply 15July 24, 2020 12:40 AM

I don't see why Claire Danes got the blame for this, other than because of the usual cultural misogyny that always wants to blame the Other Woman. She didn't owe Mary Louise Parker anything. He's the one who cheated on his baby mama.

by Anonymousreply 16July 24, 2020 12:42 AM

LOL r15 Parker would have to be completely pathetic to give the baby Crudup's name instead of her own in that circumstance. Or a double name?? Jesus, that's a cheesy sign of love. pretty much.

by Anonymousreply 17July 24, 2020 12:44 AM

“I was living with the same kind of integrity that I had always lived with. It’s not nice to be ridiculed — nobody wants that — but it’s also unavoidable.”

Wow, who knew that selfishness was integrity? I guess she was being true to her asshole self

by Anonymousreply 18July 24, 2020 12:47 AM

PS; Groupies often do that, to give their love child the celebrity father's last name. It's always a bit pathetic, but at least they might do it to give their kid an advantage through stronger connection to money and fame. Parker really would have had no reason in hell.

by Anonymousreply 19July 24, 2020 12:47 AM

R3, I used to think William looked like a Parker clone, but now that he's older you can see the resemblance to Billy.

by Anonymousreply 21July 24, 2020 12:51 AM

Some people honestly believe cheating and especially homewrecking is integrety. "You have to do what your heart tells you, don't you?!"

by Anonymousreply 22July 24, 2020 12:57 AM

We've been through this before.

Mary Louise Parker = Debbie Reynolds

Claire Danes = Elizabeth Taylor

by Anonymousreply 23July 24, 2020 1:01 AM

I always got super creepy vibes from Billy Crudup. He has a punchable face as well.

by Anonymousreply 24July 24, 2020 1:13 AM

Who? And Who??

No one cares about these sloppy nobodies.

by Anonymousreply 25July 24, 2020 1:14 AM

“I didn’t know how to not do that. I was just in love with him, and needed to explore that, and I was 24 ... I didn’t quite know what those consequences would be. But it’s OK. I went through it.”

I can't get over this quote. "I needed to explore that." Forget his wife and baby, Claire needed to "explore."

by Anonymousreply 26July 24, 2020 1:25 AM

I hate when people try to excuse the other man/woman by saying they owe nothing to the cheated-on spouse. What about basic human decency and treating others the way you want to be treated. Both cheaters are assholes.

by Anonymousreply 27July 24, 2020 1:31 AM

On a previous thread about this, I could've sworn that somebody in the know said Crudup, while cheating with Danes, had no intention of actually leaving MLP. That she found out and SHE ended it. That always made more sense. Given how briefly he and Danes were actually together, it seemed like he was going through the motions. He must have figured that he might as well make a go of it with Danes since it would look slightly less awful if people thought they were "in love", rather than just a fuck on the side while your partner is pregnant.

by Anonymousreply 28July 24, 2020 1:33 AM

Billy Crudup has gotten exactly the career he deserves--if you can call it that.

People forget, but he was a critic's darling after JESUS' SON and ALMOST FAMOUS just over 20 years ago. He was dynamic, photogenic, old Hollywood-handsome (despite being quite short) and one to watch for. Apparently, he was resistant to "going Hollywood," making nice with the press, raising his public profile, etc., right from the start.

[quote]"I don't think actors should have to do anything but come in and act. I feel the film companies should pay for proper advertising to see that the movie will sell, instead of putting it on our backs. I've tried to narrow the contractual language, which requires a 'fair and reasonable' amount of publicity. I've said in negotiations; 'How much will you pay me not to have to promote?'

What business does Crudup think he's in, exactly? He's lucky he still works at all.

by Anonymousreply 29July 24, 2020 1:34 AM

His career was genuinely hurt by this, which is quite rare in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 30July 24, 2020 1:37 AM

I love Claire. I don’t care if she’s a home wrecker.

by Anonymousreply 31July 24, 2020 1:42 AM

Claire Danes is stunning and brave.

by Anonymousreply 32July 24, 2020 1:47 AM

Crudup got roles he didn't deserve. He never should have been cast as John Merrick in the revival of The Elephant Man.

by Anonymousreply 33July 24, 2020 2:07 AM

[quote] Billy Crudup has gotten exactly the career he deserves--if you can call it that.

And did Claire get the career she deserves?

Because she's doing quite well for herself.

by Anonymousreply 34July 24, 2020 2:10 AM

[quote]Straight guys really are shitty. How do you leave your wife who is seven months pregnant with your kid?

I’m so sick of this shit - like straight women are any better.🙄 I know plenty of married women who have affairs on their husband and the husband has no clue. I even know one woman who had an affair while her husband had cancer. So spare me the women are so sweet and innocent bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 35July 24, 2020 2:13 AM

And Hugh Dancy pings my gaydar.

Agree. He was on a Hollywood star trajectory and then this thing happened and he was derailed. It is rare that a man should suffer for this type of behavior.

by Anonymousreply 41July 24, 2020 3:16 AM

Hugh Dancy was well known in the theater circle for whoring around with lots of men. I'm sure he has an open marriage with Claire.

by Anonymousreply 48July 24, 2020 6:01 AM

Crudup = crappy, shitty person and actor

Parker = Godess

by Anonymousreply 49July 24, 2020 6:10 AM

I still can't believe some of you believe there is such a thing as "homewrecking," as if this were the silent movie era.

by Anonymousreply 50July 24, 2020 6:13 AM

Actors all fuck each other. If it was just a fuck no one would have done a thing about it. Something more went on here.

by Anonymousreply 51July 24, 2020 2:05 PM

Crudup works constantly in the NY theater, pre COVID of course. He’s won a Tony and been nominated for a few more. He was great in a one man show called Harry Clarke a few years ago. He also got lots of attention and a GG nomination for The Morning Show with Jen A and Reese.

I once worked out next to Claire at the Equinox on Greenwich Ave. She’s really short and shaped exactly like a pear. If you don’t hate her already, listen to her Dax Shepard podcast from earlier this year. You’ll hate her after that, I promise. She takes herself VERY SERIOUSLY.

by Anonymousreply 52July 25, 2020 12:25 PM

R52 I’ve met her, she is not shaped like a pear at all. Rather thin. Nice try.

by Anonymousreply 53July 25, 2020 3:34 PM

How long were Danes and Crudup together? Sources vary from 1-3 years.

by Anonymousreply 54July 25, 2020 3:43 PM

Hollywood loves the big chinned ladies.

by Anonymousreply 55July 25, 2020 3:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 56July 25, 2020 3:46 PM

R53 I've never seen her in person, but I was surprised by how she bottom-heavy she was in a bikini in To Gillian, on Her 37th Birthday; she was both thin and pear-shaped. The only pics of her I can find from that scene are from her side or her hack. She's the shorter one in the plaid bikini.

Danes is soooo ugly. And that's hilarious to say she was "only 24". 18-20, I'll give it to you, you're dumb. But you're absolutely an adult 2-3 years out of college.

by Anonymousreply 60July 25, 2020 3:56 PM

MLP is a nutty woman. I have a friend who has worked with her (he is not an actor) and has many stories about her that are very unflattering. A truly selfish person.

by Anonymousreply 61July 25, 2020 4:01 PM

I’ve heard MLP is nuts, years ago while she was still on WEEDS.

Didn’t some of the WEEDS actors have some not great things to say about her after?

by Anonymousreply 62July 25, 2020 4:04 PM

Crudup has always struck me as a smug, arrogant douche.

by Anonymousreply 63July 25, 2020 4:15 PM

[quote]Crudup has always struck me as a smug, arrogant douche.

And Hollywood already had that niche filled with Sean Penn.

by Anonymousreply 64July 25, 2020 4:18 PM

R61 what are some of those unflattering stories about her?

by Anonymousreply 65July 25, 2020 4:21 PM

She really traded up marrying Hugh. I haven’t thought about Billy Crudup in years.

by Anonymousreply 66July 25, 2020 4:29 PM

I don't think Danes is ugly, but other than that I wholeheartedly agree, R60. I'm sick of people treating grown-ass adults like little kids. Even a 14-year-old should know that fucking a guy with a heavily pregnant wife is not a good idea.

by Anonymousreply 67July 25, 2020 4:35 PM

Danes was interviewed by Terry Gross on Fresh Air not so long ago. She came across as very pretentious and full of herself.

She's the type of person who says "plethora" instead of "a lot." She likes fancy words, just not to the point of learning their actual meaning sometimes.

Her dating history makes her sound like a more prestigious version of Jennifer Garner, always with an eye for the next, more useful man.

by Anonymousreply 68July 25, 2020 4:39 PM

Doesn’t anyone see the bigger problem being that a man who was already with someone (who was pregnant!) went off and screwed a younger actor? Claire Danes gets a whole thread about how terrible she is but Billy Crudup doesn’t?

by Anonymousreply 69July 25, 2020 4:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 70July 25, 2020 4:42 PM

The thread linked at R57 is quite fascinating. I doubt some of those guys are straight. Most straight guys would fuck pretty much anything, as long as it looks remotely female. And Claire's body is really not that bad.

by Anonymousreply 71July 25, 2020 4:44 PM

R70 does it matter? That is her daughter.

by Anonymousreply 72July 25, 2020 4:45 PM

How did she put up with Crudup's BO?

by Anonymousreply 73July 25, 2020 4:47 PM

[quote] “That was a scary thing. It was really hard,” she said of the public backlash. “I didn’t know how to not do that. I was just in love with him, and needed to explore that, and I was 24 ... I didn’t quite know what those consequences would be. But it’s OK. I went through it.”

Some people have this magic ability to see everything that happens in the world in only one perspective, how it affects them. Zero empathy and no self-awareness. Must be a superpower.

by Anonymousreply 74July 25, 2020 4:49 PM

R70 photo proves that is is a lie that the child wasn't Crudup's. He looks so much like him.

MLP always comes across as someone who would be very high maintenance, not that forgives cheating on her.

Crudup is quite good on The Morning Show. He has charisma.

by Anonymousreply 75July 25, 2020 4:52 PM

R71 yikes, those men are meaner about women’s bodies than on the DL, which I thought was impossible. They are ripping Danes a new one for her body shape.

by Anonymousreply 76July 25, 2020 4:53 PM

MLP is a crazy bitch. Her relationship with BC was done long before ugly CD entered the picture.

by Anonymousreply 77July 25, 2020 4:55 PM

Claire didn't know what the consequences would be (of stealing a pregnant woman's partner)... but she went through it. At age 24.

Claire SURVIVED. She is a glorious, gutsy survivor. And even more beautiful and virtuous for it.

by Anonymousreply 78July 25, 2020 4:55 PM

I love Mary-Louise Parker’s acting.

She seems legitimately insane, though, based on indirect evidence:

1. A former coworker of mine is close friends with a former Weeds producer, who says Parker is certifiably insane.

2. In this interview with Chelsea Handler, she says she stabbed a guy in the hand at a restaurant because he tried to eat off her plate while they were on a date.

3. She’s way too good at playing wickedly crazy characters.

by Anonymousreply 80July 25, 2020 4:59 PM

[quote] Claire Danes gets a whole thread about how terrible she is but Billy Crudup doesn’t?

I'd agree that BC was the much bigger asshole in this situation. He, not Danes, was the one with obligations to his wife and kid-to-be. It's obnoxious, however, that even years later, all Danes can think about is herself and how hard the situation was for her; not a word about what a shitty thing it was for MLP.

by Anonymousreply 81July 25, 2020 5:02 PM

All of these things can be true at the same time:

MLP is a hot box of crazy. Always has been.

Claire is self-obsessed and thoughtless. Not a nice person.

Crudup is a talented actor. And a complete piece of shit.

And a woman can be "thin" with a long waist, short legs, small breasts, and a rather large, full, plump ass--all at the same time.

by Anonymousreply 82July 25, 2020 5:11 PM

Tell us more about Billy Crudup's body odor please, R73.

You're the first one here to mention it.

One would think that if he really did have bad b.o., it would be something that is well known in Hollywood and Broadway circles.

by Anonymousreply 83July 25, 2020 5:17 PM

R69 Crudup isn't the one gives obnoxious interviews about the relationship years later. I agree that his actions were worse, but if Danes would keep her mouth shut she would stop getting so much shit.

by Anonymousreply 84July 25, 2020 5:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 90July 25, 2020 8:08 PM

It is high time we discuss Claire Danes' love life from twenty years ago! I have many things to say on the subject.

by Anonymousreply 91July 25, 2020 8:10 PM

We are reminded once again, are we not?

The life of the heterosexual is a sad and sordid affair.

by Anonymousreply 92July 25, 2020 8:44 PM

Despite it being stated above several times, Parker and Crudup were NOT married. He got tired of fucking her, and was probably sick of her obvious bitchiness, so he moved on. Too bad you DLers who are so obsessed with this can't do the same.

by Anonymousreply 93July 25, 2020 10:10 PM

“We are reminded once again, are we not?

The life of the heterosexual is a sad and sordid affair.”

Someone should really go back through DL archives and tally up all the stories of guys fucking married ‘straight’ men for the thrill of it and without any care or thought given to the wife.

Lots of stones being thrown inside this glass enclosure.

by Anonymousreply 94July 25, 2020 10:31 PM

She knew exactly what she was doing. But she was 24, and had never had a childhood - been acting since she was basically a zygote. Stealing Crudup from Parker was her teenage rebellion, basically.

Because gay movies are not only marketed toward gays, and when they are, they flop.

by Anonymousreply 110July 28, 2020 3:09 PM

Angels in America is not a gay movie

Billy just got an Emmy nomination for The Morning Show. Claire got nothing.

by Anonymousreply 112July 28, 2020 4:24 PM

R42 I'd rather hear Hugh Dancy whoring story.

by Anonymousreply 113August 9, 2020 3:45 AM

She already has 2 Emmys r112.

by Anonymousreply 114August 9, 2020 6:02 AM

R114 And no Oscars. Not even a nomination. Don't think she was ever even on the radar for a nomination. Something to may Glennie feel good about herself.

by Anonymousreply 115August 9, 2020 6:20 AM

Danes's Beth was far more deserving of a supporting nomination in the 94 Little Women than the butch Amy from last year's version. She was heartbreaking.

r115 is an impostor. I never sign with a period after my M. Why would I?

by Anonymousreply 117August 9, 2020 6:29 AM

R116 Stupid M. didn't even know about that version. When Greta Gerwig's version was released an M. was out promoting it she stated that is was so refreshing to have a version of Little Women through the eyes of a female director.

First I'd heard that Gillian Armstrong who directed the 1994 version was a man.

by Anonymousreply 118August 9, 2020 6:31 AM

BTW G, Are you a man now? It is hard to tell.

by Anonymousreply 119August 9, 2020 6:32 AM

Armstrong's version was far superior. From writing and performances to the direction. If you look at the credits of the hatchet job Greta Gerwig version Robin Swicord who wrote the 94 version is listed as a producer. That's because Gerwig stole direct lines, sequences (when Meg attends the dance and meets her suitor) and structure right from that version. And then stole lines from the June Allison version too. All she added was the hard core borderline lesbian layer to Jo. In my wildest dreams I still don't get how it was received. And I thought that little Irish lesbian girl was awful as Jo. Also, it was ridiculous not one of the four actresses playing the roles were even American at a time when we are so conscious about trying to make ethnicities more authentic.

I fell madly in love with him in Almost Famous.

by Anonymousreply 121August 9, 2020 7:42 AM

I've always found Billy Crudup sort of creepy. Liked him in Spotlight though.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about Spotlight. He does do smarmy types well

by Anonymousreply 123August 9, 2020 11:53 AM

R120 The 1994 version is a masterpiece! It should never be adapted again, because it was perfect. And, Mary Wickes was far better in it that Meryl's been in anything.

by Anonymousreply 124August 9, 2020 10:18 PM

Another reason it was great: It emphasized that Amy's childishness, which made her bratty actions more understandable.

by Anonymousreply 125August 9, 2020 10:19 PM

I honestly never understood why people like Claire Danes. She isn't THAT good of an actress, she has a boy's body and she does take herself SO seriously.

by Anonymousreply 126August 9, 2020 10:33 PM

[quote] Claire didn't know what the consequences would be (of stealing a pregnant woman's partner)... but she went through it. At age 24.

This reminds me of when Halle Berry got pissed off Howie Mandel for joking about her car crash, the one where she hit and ran. She said something like "that was a really traumatic experience for me". What a lack of self-awareness.
