Eldergays tell me about the 1979 Caligula and 1973 The Holy Mountain movies

were they seen as widely controversial back then? Or did they get little press? I've seen trailers of both

by Anonymousreply 31July 22, 2020 2:10 AM

Caligula was hugely controversial, yes. I went to see it with a friend when I was 18. It was bloody and violent and hard to watch, but I did love all the huge uncut cocks that were prominently featured.

by Anonymousreply 1July 20, 2020 1:21 AM

R1 Was Caligula an enthusiastic bottom in that film like he was in real life? It is said he would tire groups of young tops with his stamina.

by Anonymousreply 2July 20, 2020 1:25 AM

R1 what was the most shocking?

by Anonymousreply 3July 20, 2020 1:25 AM

R3 I'm not familiar with The Holy Mountain, so I can't compare the two.

by Anonymousreply 4July 20, 2020 1:26 AM

Caligula was controversial because A listers signed up for it and were hoodwinked into starring in a porn movie...

by Anonymousreply 5July 20, 2020 1:29 AM

R4 how about in Caligula? most shocking scene?

by Anonymousreply 6July 20, 2020 1:33 AM

As a kid, I remember the advertisements for Caligula deliberately playing it up as controversial, violent and erotic. They really emphasized the stars: Malcolm McDowell, Peter O'Toole, and Helen Mirren. Helen wasn't as famous then as she is now.

Even though I was a kid, I had to see it. I probably ended up seeing it on HBO or The Playboy Channel, then I moved on with my life.

R6 There were quite a few. The ones that stand out for me are the scene where they tie a guy's penis up with a rope, then force gallons of wine down his throat, then rip his stomach open, and his intestines and all the wine come pouring out. Then after he's dead, they cut his penis off and feed it to a dog.

Then there's another scene in a coliseum where all these guys are buried in the ground up to their heads, and this giant bladed thrashing machine is coming through and chopping all their heads off.

Caligula is not just porn but also torture porn. It's a terrible film. Holy Mountain is fantastic! I am a fan of most of Jodorowsky's work. Santa Sangre is my favorite but Holy Mountain has some wonderful imagery.

by Anonymousreply 9July 20, 2020 1:40 AM

Unfortunately, it damaged McDowells’s career. O’Toole was a wreck already, he could not care less. It’s not totally unwatchable btw., some of the non-porn scenes are good.

by Anonymousreply 10July 20, 2020 1:40 AM

R2 There's only one scene that hints at Caligula's homosexuality. He crashes a wedding and rapes the bride, then forces the groom to get on all fours. Caligula then throws a pile of grease on the guy's asshole, then sticks his fist in there.

by Anonymousreply 11July 20, 2020 1:41 AM

R6, all of this is in Suetonius.

by Anonymousreply 12July 20, 2020 1:42 AM

Bob Guccione showed what a complete lowlife piece of trash he was when he hoodwinked stars like Gielgud to be in that trashy movie. Did the mainstream stars ever sue him over his deception? They should have.

by Anonymousreply 13July 20, 2020 1:43 AM

R11 Apparently, the original scene called for Caligula to actually fuck the groom, but Malcom McDowell drew the line and said "no." So they settled on fist fucking, although I don't know if filming that made McDowell look any more favorable.

by Anonymousreply 14July 20, 2020 1:43 AM

And McDowell is pretty good in this scene, R11.

by Anonymousreply 15July 20, 2020 1:44 AM

Where can one watch Caligula? I lost my DVD. I don’t want no cleaned up version.

by Anonymousreply 16July 20, 2020 1:58 AM

R16 You can easily find the uncensored versions on PornHub and XTube.

by Anonymousreply 17July 20, 2020 2:08 AM

Tho whole movie, R17? Wow, thanks.

by Anonymousreply 18July 20, 2020 2:10 AM

Gre Vidal disowned his screenplay for Caligula, but while it was being filmed he “auditioned” many a young male extra. Or so it was rumored.

by Anonymousreply 19July 20, 2020 3:43 AM

What freaks me out about Caligula, is the thought that if Trump were alive back then when he could get away with shit like that, he'd do the same thing!

by Anonymousreply 20July 20, 2020 4:48 AM

Saw Holy Mountain on acid at a 24 hour movie marathon. It was an amazing experience and the film is incredible. The frogs and lizard invasion is mesmerizing.

R11 The fact they didn’t portray Caligula as the bottom slut he really was(with men) is disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 23July 20, 2020 5:04 AM

The design of Caligula is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 24July 20, 2020 5:09 AM

Is this for attention?

by Anonymousreply 25July 20, 2020 8:27 AM

R22 thanks!

by Anonymousreply 26July 20, 2020 6:41 PM

Having rewatched it I have to say it is a pretty dreadful movie. The camerawork is abysmal. None of the legitimate actors (with the possible exception of Peter O'Toole) seem to enjoy it. The script and dialog is often terrible. What a mess.

by Anonymousreply 27July 20, 2020 8:23 PM

R27 I could only watch halfway. Besides the completely unnecessary and disgusting vag closeups, the “little boots” dance was such a let down.

by Anonymousreply 28July 21, 2020 2:14 PM

hilarious that Helen Mirren is in this

by Anonymousreply 29July 22, 2020 12:57 AM

The most grotesque scene in Caligula is when a pair of female courtiers rape a male dwarf - and no, nothing at all is left to the imagination. Second place - well, the whole thing, really.

It's the combination of graphic violence with graphic sex and both with jaw-droppingly shitty overacting and pretentious dialogue crow-barred into the worlds's least sexy ultra-revealing wardrobe that really ignites the gag reflex. Let me put it this way, if you ever wanted to see a semi-nude John Gielgud fake an orgasm during a death scene, this is your kind of movie.

by Anonymousreply 30July 22, 2020 1:12 AM

O’Toole must have been on Meth. He has that look.
