Is Joe Kennedy primarying Ed Markey for Senate the most pointless primary ever?

Where do they even differ in their views? Markey is quite progressive. The big difference I see is age and of course name recognition though I'm not sure younger voters care about the Kennedys these days

I don't see the need for this primary

by Anonymousreply 252September 5, 2020 6:54 AM
I don't see the need for this primary

Oh, well. Consider it cancelled then.

by Anonymousreply 1July 15, 2020 11:16 PM

The question is whether or not the people of MA will ever be embarrassed by continuing to elect men from that family.

I hope he loses. He’s only doing it because he wants to be president in a few cycles.

by Anonymousreply 2July 15, 2020 11:20 PM

I like to stick with good incumbent, rather than switch to his clone. So, I’ll vote for Markey.

Joe should have waited to run for Warren’s seat when she is tapped for an administration job.

by Anonymousreply 3July 15, 2020 11:21 PM

I was a big fan of Teddy. He was compassionate. He understood people of all economic states, despite his wealth. He blended old time Democrat policy like being pro-union, with new positions, like Gay rights. People liked him, and he was effective, partly for that reason. He got a ton of money for Boston’s big dig and harbor cleanup projects. Those were literally necessary to drag Boston into the 21st century. I also felt he was contrite of his drunken past.

by Anonymousreply 4July 15, 2020 11:28 PM

How likely is it (assuming Biden wins and she is not VP, which she won't be) that Warren gets offered the kind of job worth giving up her Senate seat for? Which would be Treasury Sec. or Sec. of State, but she ain't getting the latter.

by Anonymousreply 5July 15, 2020 11:28 PM

Markey is an old school liberal lion while Kennedy wants to join the progressive wing and be the first boy squad member.

I support Markey for Secretary of Education (has the quals) under a Biden Admin after Kennedy wins the MA Senate seat in an epic upset of the young progressives over the old school liberals.

It’s a Win/Win for me either/or. Nice to live in a lib state when even your GOP gov is basically a lib anywhere else in Murica.

by Anonymousreply 6July 15, 2020 11:53 PM

do they disagree on anything? I don't remember Markey even having any scandals

by Anonymousreply 7July 16, 2020 1:13 AM

I'm voting for the cute redhead Kennedy boy! Go Joe, go!

by Anonymousreply 8July 16, 2020 1:22 AM

R5, nobody knows. It’s a crap shoot. But as it is, Kennedy isn’t replacing a DINO. He’s going after a good guy out of ambition only. “We’re eating outer own.” Maybe he could have held out for an appointment in the administration?

by Anonymousreply 9July 16, 2020 5:41 AM

It's a shame they did not think to check with you first, OP.

by Anonymousreply 10July 16, 2020 5:52 AM

they're having a debate on Sunday

by Anonymousreply 11July 24, 2020 3:37 AM

I agree.young people don't really care about Kennedys anymore. And older people are really just over them.

The point is Kennedy's ego. He wants to be in the Senate, not the House. That's a much better launching pad for his inevitable Presidential run.

by Anonymousreply 15July 27, 2020 2:30 AM

Joe K has some bad habits. He's not that different from his cousin Patrick, just better managed.

It will all come out. It always does.

The days of the Kennedys being bulletproof are long gone.

by Anonymousreply 16July 27, 2020 2:35 AM

Markey is far more progressive than Kennedy. For Kennedy I'm sure its' nothing more than ego (the House is faaar beneath a Kennedy) but the people supporting him are probably the same idiots that wasted millions primarying AOC.

You know, I hope Kennedy loses. Because this is what Kennedys do. Teddy primaried Jimmy Carter and helped lay the groundwork for Reagan. Old Joe Kennedy sabotaged Roosevelt!! JFK himself went after a McCormack in MAssachusetts, dividing the state party, and John McCormack was Speaker of the House at the time! So the Kennedys have no party loyalty. None. And maybe party loyalty isn't necessarily a thing in this situation., but they really are out for themselves and really believe they know best.

by Anonymousreply 19July 27, 2020 3:01 AM

I agree with OP and would vote for Markey if I lived in MA.

by Anonymousreply 20July 27, 2020 3:07 AM

I've heard that Joe Kennedy has some weird stances on certain policies, but can't remember what they are now. Does anybody know? He's awfully cute. But that's no reason to vote for him.

by Anonymousreply 21July 27, 2020 5:32 AM

Dumb primary challenge.

by Anonymousreply 22July 27, 2020 6:03 AM

oh boy I think whatever friendship they had prior to this (and they were friendly) is toast!

Tonight's debate got very personal and heated

by Anonymousreply 23August 12, 2020 6:44 AM

Once ahead in the polls, Kennedy is now neck and neck with Markey.

In his relentless television commercials, Kennedy acts like a pearl clutching drama queen, way over the top.

His campaign signs are everywhere throughout Boston and the suburbs.

They just have KENNEDY on them, no first name, no photo. He's strictly running on his last name, which is not as magical in Massachusetts as it used to be.

by Anonymousreply 24August 12, 2020 6:59 AM

Joe takes a lot of Adderall.

Yeah, that's it. Adderall .......

He has a smart mother but his father is an idiot.

If he loses, wait for the long "rest" due to exhaustion.

by Anonymousreply 25August 12, 2020 12:18 PM

One of the candidates seeking Joe III's seat in Congress is cutie Jake Auchincloss, whose grandfather was the brother of Jackie O's stepfather, Hugh Auchincloss.

by Anonymousreply 27August 12, 2020 3:57 PM

best moment of last night's debate was when Markey called out Kennedy's father and brother paying for a super PAC to air attack ads against him. Kennedy claimed to know nothing about it lol

by Anonymousreply 28August 12, 2020 5:46 PM

I went to Brown w Markey’s son, Rob. Handsome dude.

by Anonymousreply 29August 12, 2020 5:54 PM

In DC they call Markey "the third senator from Maryland." The idea being he only tunes into Massachusetts concerns once every six years or so.

by Anonymousreply 30August 12, 2020 6:04 PM

R29, Ed Markey does not have any children.

by Anonymousreply 31August 12, 2020 8:19 PM

R28, For me, the best moment was when Joe III lashed out at Markey because some Markey supporter posted on Twitter that "Lee Harvey Oswald shot the wrong Kennedy".

by Anonymousreply 32August 12, 2020 8:22 PM

We all claim we want the party to get younger but we still hold on to the Markeys of the party, the guys been in Washington since 1976

by Anonymousreply 33August 12, 2020 8:23 PM

Markey needs to retire. How is the party supposed to groom the next batch of leaders if the old ones refuse to give up the power.

GO Joe Kennedy 3rd. !

by Anonymousreply 34August 12, 2020 8:33 PM

Joe looks like he has a sweaty rosebud

by Anonymousreply 35August 12, 2020 8:39 PM

There's been a big turnaround in the polls. Markey was trailing Kennedy for most of the year, but he's now moving ahead.

New poll from UMass:

Senator Markey (51%)

Rep. Kennedy (36%)

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 36August 13, 2020 12:33 AM

Come September 1st, Joe III(or as some in MA call him Joe, Joe, Joe) could become the second Kennedy to lose an election, his aunt Kathleen being the first.

by Anonymousreply 37August 13, 2020 12:41 AM

We chose to go boomer not because it is easy but because it is haard!

by Anonymousreply 38August 13, 2020 12:54 AM

r16, when were the Kennedys EVER bulletproof?

by Anonymousreply 39August 13, 2020 12:54 AM

R33 and R34 I do want younger people but I'm sick of the Kennedy family. This one isn't the most progressive anyway and is running on his name

by Anonymousreply 40August 13, 2020 1:16 AM

Have these people never heard of seniority and its benefit to one's constituents?

Now get off my lawn.

by Anonymousreply 41August 13, 2020 1:25 AM

I’ll be voting for Markey.

by Anonymousreply 42August 13, 2020 1:26 AM

When Kennedy decided to run, Markey should have announced his retirement. Massachusetts needs another great Kennedy senator!

by Anonymousreply 43August 13, 2020 1:33 AM

The debate was very one note from Kennedy, all I heard was his carefully scripted talking points attacking Markey. I didn't hear much about what Kennedy would DO. As a Mass resident Markey has my vote. Try again next time Joe.

by Anonymousreply 44August 13, 2020 1:39 AM

People are realising that Kennedy is a show pony who’s only running for senate so he can run for president in 8/12 years. He has no argument for why he is better than Markey and he comes off as a creepy computer generated version of a generic “Kennedy”. Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 45August 13, 2020 2:00 AM

Joe Kennedy will be a great Senator and if he decides to run for President, more power to him! We desperately need another Kennedy Presidency! Time to put Markey out to pasture.

by Anonymousreply 46August 13, 2020 2:09 AM

To the above poster, Ed Markey has no children, so I doubt you went to college with his son...

A friend grew up with Kennedy. Says he's a good guy. I like his ideas. But he and Markey just don't differ enough and there's no reason to vote out Markey, so Markey gets my vote in September.

That said, it's refreshing to live somewhere with two progressive candidates debating...

by Anonymousreply 47August 13, 2020 2:20 AM

last night got quite ugly between the 2

by Anonymousreply 48August 13, 2020 2:28 AM

In normal circumstances, I would vote to re-elect Markey, but not when his opponent is a Kennedy, go Joe!

by Anonymousreply 49August 13, 2020 2:34 AM

R48, Markey could have avoided all the "ugliness" by stepping aside once Kennedy announced he was running.

by Anonymousreply 50August 13, 2020 2:41 AM

R50, Why should he have stepped aside for that entitled opportunist?

by Anonymousreply 51August 13, 2020 2:48 AM

He's running for Markey's seat because Ayanna Pressley will move into Warren's seat when Warren goes to the Cabinet.

by Anonymousreply 52August 13, 2020 2:49 AM

This is so fucking predictable. The idiot voters are going to elect someone nearing 80 years over an intelligent Progressive up and comer.

by Anonymousreply 53August 13, 2020 2:55 AM

Warren ain’t going anywhere. Joe’s Wall St. Donors would never allow him to put her in charge of the treasury.

I don’t think any of the squad will try and move up just yet. Kennedy is only doing this because he can run on his name and the people in Mass are suckers that fall for it every time.

by Anonymousreply 54August 13, 2020 2:56 AM

America was robbed when JFK, RFK and JFK Jr were killed and Ted lost his chance at the Presidency over a decade old incident, at the time that some chose to hold against him. Joe deserves to be elected Senator this year and President whenever he chooses to run!

by Anonymousreply 55August 13, 2020 3:11 AM

R55, Murder has no statute of limitations.

by Anonymousreply 56August 13, 2020 3:13 AM

R50, yea. I mean your nose wouldn't have gotten broken if you had just stepped aside when that fist came at you. The nerve of some people.

by Anonymousreply 61August 13, 2020 6:44 PM

Markey is obviously just thinking about himself. If he cared about Massachusetts, he would have in fact called it a day, once Kennedy announced he was running for the seat.

by Anonymousreply 62August 14, 2020 1:32 AM

It’s so fucking disgusting to see Ed deny Joe Kennedy a chance to become a leader.

by Anonymousreply 63August 14, 2020 2:33 AM

Primarying an incumbent is good. Some of these politicians become complacent because they know in their district they can't lose. I'm one of these "elder" gays you talk about and I believe we need to get rid of these old politicians and get new and young blood into these politicians. I also happen to be an AOC fan.

by Anonymousreply 64August 14, 2020 2:38 AM

R63 is the ghost of Rose Kennedy. How UNCOUTH of the lessers not to just GIVE my grandson the Senate seat that is rightfully his.

by Anonymousreply 65August 14, 2020 2:44 AM

If you are progressive, Markey is one of the most liberal members in the Senate. Why do you think AOC and co are rooting for Markey over Kennedy r53.

by Anonymousreply 66August 14, 2020 2:45 AM

AOC even filmed an ad for Markey's campaign

I wonder how much that matters in Massachusetts though

by Anonymousreply 67August 14, 2020 2:54 AM

There may not be one, R3. Hopefully, she'll stay in the Senate

by Anonymousreply 68August 14, 2020 3:04 AM

I am hoping that all the Kennedy ass-kissers on this thread are joking.

Because - really??

by Anonymousreply 69August 14, 2020 3:37 AM

Markey is one of the most progressive senators in the US. Yeah, he can come across as kind of dull, but I don't care as long as I agree with his positions, he's fine with me. I'll vote for Kennedy (or Seth Moulton) when Ed or Elizabeth decide to take a Cabinet post in either the Biden or Harris administration.

by Anonymousreply 70August 14, 2020 3:44 AM

Kind of dull r70?

by Anonymousreply 71August 14, 2020 4:03 AM

R65, Rose, you confused old cunt, Joe III is your great-grandson.

by Anonymousreply 72August 14, 2020 4:40 AM

R70, Seth Moulton is an absolute asshole and an incompetent fraud.

by Anonymousreply 73August 14, 2020 4:43 AM

It's funny seeing all the far-left wing support Markey. The senator who voted in favor for the Iraq war and the crime bill.

by Anonymousreply 74August 14, 2020 4:46 AM

R74, what crime bill?

by Anonymousreply 75August 14, 2020 5:18 AM

R72: Oh dear. Well, I am on with my fifth martini this morning with the ghosts of Jackie and Eunice. One does drink a lot when one's husbands were never faithful.

by Anonymousreply 76August 14, 2020 1:33 PM

Kennedy is endorsed by Pelosi, the late John Lewis and Joaquin Castro

Markey has Schumer, Warren, AOC and Boston mayor Marty Walsh

other Mass House members Pressley and Moulton are staying out of it

by Anonymousreply 79August 25, 2020 1:29 AM

R79, Markey also has the endorsement of The Boston Globe, which still carries weight in ultra liberal Massachusetts.

by Anonymousreply 80August 25, 2020 1:47 AM

Joe Joe Joe must be pissed that Warren endorsed Markey, since he endorsed her for POTUS early on in the primaries.

by Anonymousreply 81August 25, 2020 1:51 AM

So Ted was in Washington for 47 years before dying in office, but Markey is should give up his Senate seat because a Kennedy wants it and it's time for new blood?

by Anonymousreply 82August 25, 2020 2:12 AM

this is high stakes for both. 1 of them will be out of Congress after the primary. Kennedy is obviously vacating his House seat and there are like a million candidates in that primary. If he loses this what's next? That would be a huge roadblock in his career

by Anonymousreply 83August 25, 2020 6:02 AM

My husband & I just voted today. For Ed Markey. One of the most progressive members of the Senate. He's not so old that he needs to be put out to pasture. I'd be happy to vote for Joe Kennedy, but not just yet.

by Anonymousreply 84August 25, 2020 6:10 AM

R83, If Joe III loses next week to Markey, I see him running for Governor of Massachusetts in 2022.

His father, Joe II, was set to run for Governor, but then that scandal involving his brother Michael and the teenage babysitter went public and Joe II backed off.

Joe III turns 40 this year, there's plenty of time for him in politics.

by Anonymousreply 85August 25, 2020 6:42 AM

If 92-year-old Ethel were to die between now and September 1st, it might earn her grandson some much needed sympathy votes.

by Anonymousreply 86August 25, 2020 6:45 AM

It's not Markeys senate seat, it's up to the voters. It's weird how some of ya'll think these politicians own these positions

by Anonymousreply 92August 29, 2020 6:25 AM
I was a big fan of Teddy. He was compassionate

Leaving aside Mary Jo, "compassionate" Teddy held back universal health care in America by generations. Nixon tried to push this through but Kennedy pulled his support and it died with Watergate.

Then Ted did it AGAIN when Jimmy Carter tried to push through a similar plan.

Before Ted's death he admitted he was wrong to block the Nixon plan. He never made a similar admission about stopping Carter.

"The fact is that we would have had comprehensive healthcare now had it not been for Ted Kennedy’s deliberately blocking the legislation that I proposed,” Carter said in an interview to air Sunday on "60 Minutes" on CBS. “It was his fault. Ted Kennedy killed the bill."

by Anonymousreply 93August 29, 2020 7:05 AM

Jimmy Carter, upon learning that Ted would be running for POTUS in 1980, "I'll kick his ass".

by Anonymousreply 94August 29, 2020 11:02 AM

As Pacino's Jimmy Hoffa says about Jack Kennedy in The Irishman, "Never trust a millionaire's kid."

by Anonymousreply 95August 29, 2020 11:06 AM

"I've said it a thousand times, i dont care if they are Irish, I dont care if they are catholics. If there's one person you can't trust in this life, it's millionaires' kids".

by Anonymousreply 96August 29, 2020 11:09 AM

With an almost guaranteed loss next Tuesday, I wouldn't be surprised if Joe trots out some Kennedys in the final days of the campaign.

92-year-old Ethel seemed frail at her last public appearance, but I'm sure she'd want to help her grandson win.

Who can forget Barbara Bush campaigning for Jeb in snowy NH in 2016, even though she required a walker and an oxygen tank?

by Anonymousreply 97August 29, 2020 11:25 AM

Kennedy men probably feel entitled to that Senate seat at a certain age.

by Anonymousreply 98August 29, 2020 11:34 AM

Joe probably thought that Elizabeth Warren would be on the ticket as President or VP, or thinks she might serve in Biden's cabinet, and that, even if he loses against Markey, running in this primary will position him to take Warren's seat. He's an entitled cunt.

by Anonymousreply 99August 29, 2020 11:42 AM

Joe is very close friends with Beto, who has done some virtual campaigning for Joe, but has yet to come to Massachusetts.

by Anonymousreply 100August 29, 2020 11:50 AM

One thing hurting Joe is that he looks younger than his age, which adds credence to the "entitled brat" criticism.

He turns 40 later this year. JFK was 35 when he became a Massachusetts Senator in 1952.

by Anonymousreply 101August 29, 2020 11:56 AM

MAAHKY got my vote. The Kennedy supporters on this thread sound like Berniebros/Boris.

by Anonymousreply 102August 29, 2020 12:15 PM

Primarying another Democrat was dumb on Joe’s part.

by Anonymousreply 103August 29, 2020 5:18 PM

Markey should have announced his retirement as soon as Kennedy announced he was running for the seat. Markey just thinks about himself. For the first time in my life, I will be voting the the Republican senate nominee here in Mass.

by Anonymousreply 104August 29, 2020 7:39 PM

R99, if that was his expectation, why would he tear up the party running against Marley?!

by Anonymousreply 105August 29, 2020 7:51 PM

R104, There are two Republican candidates running for the Senate in Massachusetts.

One is Kevin O'Connor and the other is Dr. Shiva, that nut who was married to Fran Drescher.

by Anonymousreply 106August 29, 2020 7:57 PM

I just hope the losing candidate endorses the winner but there's so much bad blood now. Kennedy's selfishness might cause friction in the general election. The Markey and Kennedy stans on twitter are really going at each other. The Democrats need unity in 2020 not division

by Anonymousreply 107August 29, 2020 8:00 PM

R105, because neither MA senate seat is likely to go Republican (unless the Governor runs for Warren's seat against Kennedy), and because Kennedy is an opportunist who doesn't care about the party so long as he inherits his rightful throne in the senate

by Anonymousreply 108August 29, 2020 8:17 PM

R108, As mentioned above, Gov. Charlie Baker can legally name himself to Warren's Senate seat if Biden is elected and she's named to his Cabinet.

by Anonymousreply 109August 29, 2020 8:22 PM

I'm surprised Caroline made no campaign appearances in Massachusetts for Joe.

by Anonymousreply 110August 29, 2020 8:26 PM

R109, no he can't. Massachusetts law requires a special election. Remember when Scott Brown won the special election in 2010? The Democratic governor would have appointed a Democrat to the seat if he could have. Instead, Brown beat Coakley and destroyed the Dems' 60-vote filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

by Anonymousreply 111August 29, 2020 8:29 PM

R105, yes, most likely Markey will be reelected, but it will NOT be with my vote and I hope Kennedy DOES NOT endorse him!

by Anonymousreply 112August 29, 2020 8:53 PM

R112, Hi, Ethel!

r127 No there's no way to delete it, wish there was

A Suffolk poll out has Markey up 51 to 41

so Kennedy is trailing in all recent polls

by Anonymousreply 131August 31, 2020 1:46 AM
Markey just thinks about himself. He should have retired once Joe announced he was running for the seat.

WHY, troll??? If his constituents prefer Kennedy, they're welcome to vote for him. If they'd rather Markey continue to hold the seat, they should have the option of voting for Markey. Not sure what's so selfish about failing to consider what a Kennedy wants above all else.

by Anonymousreply 132August 31, 2020 5:58 AM

Tuesday's the big day!

by Anonymousreply 133August 31, 2020 7:21 AM

On Sunday, the best Joe could drum up to do some campaigning with him was Vicki Kennedy, Ted's widow.

by Anonymousreply 134August 31, 2020 11:39 AM

At the Gay Pride Parade last year, my overly enthusiastic dear friend made an innocent faux pas by abruptly approaching Joe Kennedy and putting his arm around him for a photo without first asking. The wife was ignored.

JK looked bothered, worried, and maybe a little scared. He had no security. I reassured JK that it was just for a photo and it was over quickly. He did look gorgeous, in any case. His hair color really works well for him. I don’t blame JK for his reaction in any case, and especially with his family history.

I’m still voting for Markey, though. I believe incumbents who have served us well deserve reelection.

by Anonymousreply 135August 31, 2020 4:14 PM

Dateline: Boston

I got my mail-in ballot on Saturday at 4 pm. It’s due on Tuesday. That’s one-to-two mail days. It would never get there on time. I’ll vote in person with gloves and a mask and a prayer.

I’ve recently been getting only 2 mail deliveries over each of 2+ weeks. I know I’m not getting all the first class mail that has been sent to me, because I’ve signed-up for email notification reporting the mail to expect, and it’s not coming.

I called the PO today to ask the excellent, efficient, boss about it. I said I did’t want to get anyone in trouble, but just wanted my mail. I was told it’s a nation-wide problem, out of their hands, but she would do what she could. She advised me to vote.
R124: Thomas is a disgrace. We need a LIBERAL African American justice to try to erase his stink.

We’ll take the Senate. Then put constitutional scholar and former President Obama on the SCOTUS.

by Anonymousreply 137August 31, 2020 4:56 PM

My wish is that the next Congress increases the number of Supreme Court Justices from 9 to 15. The Constitution allows this, and it’s been done before. Because the 9 are overworked, of course. Appoint 6 progressives, preferably young and healthy. In the same legislation, reduce the number back to 9 by attrition.

Not that this is payback for McConnell’s refusal to address Obama’s last [italic] moderate [/italic] SCOTUS nominee, oh no.

Imagine on the court:

Pres. Obama (IL)

Sen. Warren (MA)

Rep. Schiff (CA)

Rep. Demings (FL)

Rep. Kennedy (MA)

Sec. of State Hillary Clinton (NY)

Alternate 1: Rachel Maddow, PhD (NY)

Alternate 2: Sen. Tammy Duckworth (IL)

by Anonymousreply 138August 31, 2020 5:36 PM

If Markey "wins" tomorrow, Kennedy should demand a recount to make sure the election wasn't stolen.

by Anonymousreply 139August 31, 2020 9:30 PM

we might not know who wins for a few days as many have applied for mail-in voting

by Anonymousreply 140August 31, 2020 10:50 PM

I got my mail-in primary ballot on Saturday. There’s no way it would get across town in two days when it is due. Not when I’m getting my own mail delivered only twice a week. I’m voting in person. How could Trump fuck up the post office so effortlessly?

by Anonymousreply 141August 31, 2020 11:03 PM

I don't get the Kennedy troll. Markey should retire? So Joe (pay no mind to my substance abuse) Kennedy can win?

Obviously that's not how it works and was never going to happen.

Under scrutiny, the Kennedy crap doesn't hold water. You can have good hair and still be a dud.

by Anonymousreply 149September 1, 2020 10:43 AM

Markey could have avoided all this "sadness" if he had just retired!

by Anonymousreply 150September 1, 2020 2:33 PM

today's the day!

and really interesting to see who wins Kennedy's House seat. None of the contenders are known quantities to the public at large

by Anonymousreply 151September 1, 2020 5:13 PM

Go Markey. I hate the Kennedys. Over privileged wankers.

by Anonymousreply 152September 1, 2020 5:22 PM

We need an experienced dem like Markey. Not more Kennedy narcissism. As another comment pointed out, if Kennedy really wanted to be helpful he would've contributed time and resources to a battleground state. It's not nice to admit to being prejudiced against an entire family but after the behavior shown by various Kennedy family members over the last 40 years, I would actively avoid ever voting for anyone related to them.

by Anonymousreply 153September 1, 2020 5:33 PM

I will vote for the Republican in the general, definitely NOT Markey!

by Anonymousreply 154September 1, 2020 8:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 163September 2, 2020 1:13 AM

R160 The Kennedys need to diversify cos their tricks aren't working in MA any more. Perhaps they should start a few Kennedy lodges / chapters in some other states and try their black magic there; leave us alone in MA.

by Anonymousreply 164September 2, 2020 1:17 AM

This is what happens when you let arrogance cloud your judgement. There was no reason to primary Markey. He’s a very effective senator and this will probably be his last term anyway. Kennedy did very little to talk about what he’d bring to the table that Markey lacked. Mass is one of those “wait your turn” states. Kennedy blew it.

by Anonymousreply 165September 2, 2020 1:20 AM
Kennedy did very little to talk about what he’d bring to the table that Markey lacked.

Born to run, hun.

by Anonymousreply 166September 2, 2020 1:22 AM

Very true, r165. Kennedy is (was?) a rising star in the party. He’s effective and eloquent. And he blew it running against Markey. He should have waited.

by Anonymousreply 167September 2, 2020 1:22 AM

Kennedy is a nice guy, too. (Good friend grew up with him and knows him well. I trust her opinion.) It's too bad. He should have held off.

by Anonymousreply 168September 2, 2020 1:24 AM

He brought to the table the Kennedy name, which Markey lacks. Kennedy is dumb, fed since birth on his entitlement; they think they are royalty these people and are surrounded by sycophants and courtiers. It's ovah, at last.

by Anonymousreply 174September 2, 2020 1:28 AM

I don't hate Kennedy but I'm glad he lost.

He thought he could bulldozer anyone simply because of his last name. MA taught him a life lesson.

by Anonymousreply 175September 2, 2020 1:29 AM

Yeah Markey was supposed to stand aside because a Kennedy expressed an interest in his Senate seat. Like the complacent husband who would stand aside and offer his wife to Edward VII.

Disgusting. Joe III needs to spend more time with his hair.

by Anonymousreply 176September 2, 2020 1:32 AM

This is a bad day for Nancy Pelosi.

First, the San Francisco hair salon scandal goes public and now her endorsed candidate, Joe Kennedy, goes down in flames.

by Anonymousreply 177September 2, 2020 1:37 AM

Markey 56% - Kennedy 44%

by Anonymousreply 178September 2, 2020 1:39 AM

Kennedy seems like a nice person. I don’t think his career is over because of this. He should have known better but he saw an opportunity and he took it. I don’t think the Kennedy name means what it used to.

by Anonymousreply 179September 2, 2020 1:40 AM

R179 there was no opportunity, except that he's called Kennedy which some think is an on-going opportunity 24/7/365.

by Anonymousreply 190September 2, 2020 1:57 AM

Alex Morse was endorsed by AOC and he lost tonight r172.

The story of the night is the incumbents won.

by Anonymousreply 191September 2, 2020 2:03 AM

Why the fuck are you trying to primary Markey, you little shit?

We are suppose to be united against Trump and Fascism. I really hate all the Kennedy's spawn now. No more kennedy's, clintons, bushs and TRUMPs. No more shithole families in politics. We are a Democracy, not a family dynasty.

Is he losing? What a fucking nightmare.

by Anonymousreply 192September 2, 2020 2:05 AM
[R179] there was no opportunity,

Exactly. You don't primary someone unless he's a clear and obvious fuck-up in some way. Markey is an effective and respected senator whose constituents clearly wanted to reelect him. Kennedy doesn't et to just shove him aside because his name is Kennedy. Markey is in his 70s and likely won't run for another term; Kennedy should have stayed in the House and waited his turn. Now he's jobless and looks like a fool.

He, along with a couple of posters in this thread, needs to learn that most people, including most MA residents, really don't give much of a shit about the Kennedys any more.

by Anonymousreply 193September 2, 2020 2:11 AM

R192, the others may have learned their name doesn't work any more but the Trumps will be going on and on and on for at least the next fifty years unless they are all locked up.

by Anonymousreply 194September 2, 2020 2:12 AM

Joe just conceded to Markey.

by Anonymousreply 195September 2, 2020 2:25 AM

Joe should have shut the fuck up and been nice to Markey who may have arranged for the seat to be passed to Joe Joe Joe when Markey retired in about six years' time. Pelosia's judgment has been appalling and I call on her to make way for AOC as Speaker, now.

by Anonymousreply 196September 2, 2020 2:26 AM
He thought he could bulldozer anyone simply because of his last name. MA taught him a life lesson.

He ran for office for the same reason Markey has not step down. Markey is not guaranteed his seat, especially after being in capital hill for 4 decades, yet he acted as if it was owed to him. How dare someone primaries him. He'll be 80 years old when his seat is up again. Absolutely obscene.

by Anonymousreply 197September 2, 2020 2:31 AM

Interesting, Bernie Sanders endorsed Markey, and it was extremely helpful.

Who gave this little shit money? Was it Bloomberg's money?

by Anonymousreply 198September 2, 2020 2:31 AM

Honestly, I don't think this is a referendum on "progressives" or Ocasio-Cortez, whom I do not like. I think its is about hubris, arrogance, and entitlement. Kennedy never articulated why he should be the nominee - because he couldn't. He should have just waited six more years, now his reputation is diminished.

"Camelot" was a fable. All the Kennedy men treated their wives terribly.

by Anonymousreply 199September 2, 2020 2:32 AM

He lost for the same reason Teddy never became president. He couldn’t answer “the question”.

He could have had a senate seat for life if he just waited for Markey to retire next cycle.

by Anonymousreply 200September 2, 2020 2:34 AM
I think its is about hubris, arrogance, and entitlement.

It isn't. Otherwise the seat would have gone to the younger progressive like Joe, not the established politician that won't let go of power.

by Anonymousreply 213September 2, 2020 3:00 AM

Markey was the progressive candidate, that is why he was supported by Bernie/AOC.

by Anonymousreply 223September 2, 2020 3:23 AM

Kennedy should have run against Charlie Baker. There's no reason Massachusetts should have a do-nothing Republican governor.

But no, he thought he deserved to be in the Senate instead of Markey, just because he's a Kennedy.

Good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 224September 2, 2020 3:24 AM
Pete, the lowly mayor of a small city had no business thinking he was going to get the nomination.

by Anonymousreply 225September 2, 2020 3:28 AM

Beto was trying to flip Texas. Beto supported medicare for all and medicaid expansion under the ACA for Texas. Texans do NOT have the medicaid expansion, the republicans there are blocking it.

Mass already has the ACA expansion. The people of mass are more progressive than the republican governor and he had to implement the ACA Medicaid expansion, or he would be voted out. Both Senators would work their asses off to protect the ACA and to pass medicare for all. They already proven it. This is Markey and Warren.

by Anonymousreply 226September 2, 2020 3:33 AM

I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that Jean Kennedy just died? Maybe the last bit of that Kennedy Camelot magic died with her, and the Kennedys only have their if one of the original members from the original clan was alive.

The last bit of Kennedy power died with her.

by Anonymousreply 227September 2, 2020 3:35 AM

R224, in Nov. I hope Mass gets a Republican senator! That is what they deserve after choosing Markey over Kennedy

They primarily differed in experience, age, hairdo, and name. I stick with allied, effective incumbents, unless there are more significant reasons to change.

JK has decades to build a larger base of support and experience and can still become President while still a young man.

by Anonymousreply 235September 2, 2020 6:15 AM

Another old white man clings to power.

by Anonymousreply 236September 2, 2020 6:35 AM

Markey hasn't clung to power, he swatted JK down like a cat climbing a drape.

by Anonymousreply 237September 2, 2020 9:51 AM

Primarying an incumbent is good. Some of these politicians become complacent because they know in their district they can't lose. I'm one of these "elder" gays you talk about and I believe we need to get rid of these old politicians and get new and young blood into these politicians. I also happen to be an AOC fan.

I agree with this; the absence of real competition is how you get monsters like Lindsay Graham who primarily serve corporate (or Russian) interests rather than those of their constituents.

by Anonymousreply 238September 2, 2020 10:51 AM

Yes, spending millions of $$$ on pointless races is totally good for America and the Democratic party!!!

Also let's get rid of people just because they're old!!! It doesn't matter if they fight for people, replace the gramps with young studs!!! All of them!!!

Also Ed Markey = Lindsay Graham, totally!!!

by Anonymousreply 239September 2, 2020 11:01 AM

There is nothing whatsoever intrinsically good about 'young blood'. In this case, the mini-Kennedy offered literally nothing except his name, against Markey's principles and achievements. Hence your alleged idol AOC supporting Markey.

by Anonymousreply 240September 2, 2020 11:04 AM

Calm down R239, I'm not suggesting that Markey is the same as Lady G; the voters of MA have spoken & indicated that they feel that Markey support their interests and that's a good thing for democracy. But there is nothing wrong with offering voters a viable alternative if in fact they did *not* feel Markey effectively represented them.

by Anonymousreply 241September 2, 2020 11:43 AM

I really thought Jake Auchincloss had the race for Joe's Congressional seat in the bag, but apparently not . . .

"The seven-way Democratic primary to replace Rep. Joe Kennedy III in Congress is effectively down to two candidates. But it will take at least one extra day before anyone officially moves forward.

With roughly 80 percent of 4th District precincts reporting early Wednesday morning, former Brookline Select Board member Jesse Mermell and Newton City Councilor Jake Auchincloss were separated by just 0.1 percent, at 22.4 percent and 22.3 percent, respectively. However, expert and amateur vote-counters alike say that, based on the areas that have yet to report results, Auchincloss may be headed toward the nomination.

For now, the candidates themselves are urging patience, especially given the unprecedented number of mail-in ballots due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "

by Anonymousreply 242September 2, 2020 12:34 PM

Little Joe is a cute lil fucker!

by Anonymousreply 243September 2, 2020 12:48 PM

Auchincloss is almost as entitled as Joe Joe Joe.
