Are minors useless to employers??

Can I mention my minor or is it completely useless? Let's say I minored in Philosophy or Computer Sciences, will I have a leg up on others? Or should I shut up about it since it means nothing?

by Anonymousreply 23July 13, 2020 4:32 PM

We don't call them employees in God's house but minors are always encouraged to get involved.

What skills did you acquire in your minor? Are they useful for the job you are applying to?

That's what you need to be asking yourself. Same for your major for that matter.

by Anonymousreply 2July 13, 2020 1:32 PM

Personally, I've never found minors to be helpful in any situation.

by Anonymousreply 3July 13, 2020 1:47 PM

I've always found them very, very useful.

by Anonymousreply 4July 13, 2020 2:07 PM

Yes, list it, it can help.

by Anonymousreply 5July 13, 2020 2:32 PM

That depends how useless your major is, OP.

by Anonymousreply 6July 13, 2020 2:34 PM

If your minor applies to the job you're applying for more than your major, then yes, bring it up. I have a minor in education (was considering a double-major, but discovered how much I hated teaching) which helped me get a job in tech training

Unless you're in a very specialized field, most employers don't really care about what degree you have, they just want you to have one. College, for the most part, gives you a broader understanding of the world as a whole, and teaches you to get along with the other boys and girls. I never interview based on a degree or grades, but rather experience and personality and the right fit for the work environment,

by Anonymousreply 8July 13, 2020 2:52 PM

I'm pretty sure it depends on the minor, OP, and the field, and the minor in relation to the major and the field and position within that field.

Obviously.

You have a degree?

Bring back beautiful, black coal. I love the smell!

by Anonymousreply 10July 13, 2020 3:20 PM

After your first job, no one gives a fuck about your education.

by Anonymousreply 11July 13, 2020 3:31 PM

What about my Program?

by Anonymousreply 12July 13, 2020 3:37 PM

I think it can be useful, if you have thought ahead. I know people on DL tend to scoff at Philosophy, but, depending on the program, it can give you skills in or knowledge of logic and argumentation. Also, if your minor shows balance (say, Engineering major, Art History minor or vice versatility) that can make you appealing if the job involves creative thinking.

by Anonymousreply 13July 13, 2020 3:41 PM

They are quite useful until you get caught.

by Anonymousreply 14July 13, 2020 3:46 PM

If applying for your first job right out of college, yes, mention your minor in your resume and application. The prospective employer knows you won't have much if any work experience and this will help convey your overall educational experience. Also note any extracurricular activities (staff writer, project leader, volunteer, etc.).

by Anonymousreply 15July 13, 2020 3:51 PM

Unless you’re applying for a job at GOOP or a recreational marijuana dispensary, I can’t imagine a minor in philosophy is going to help you much.

by Anonymousreply 16July 13, 2020 3:55 PM

In the modern economy there are lots of jobs that rely on skills that you should have learned or at least became familiar with during your education r8. Not all of course, but it isn't that rare.

by Anonymousreply 17July 13, 2020 3:58 PM

But for god's sake, never mention your shady dealings in the used book trade.

[quoteE] Are minors useless to employers??

I hate to tell you pal, but most majors are useless to employers. The number of people working in professions their degrees trained them for is alarmingly small. Outside of scientific and highly technical professions most employers are more interested that a prospective employee had the intelligence and maturity to get a degree. What their field of study was is many times inconsequential.

[quote]Are minors useless to employers?

Not the cute ones.

by Anonymousreply 20July 13, 2020 4:09 PM

Not if they want to set a melancholy mood.

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2020 4:26 PM

Whenever I see a minor listed on an application, I do take a second look. I think this applicant obviously worked extra hard in school.

Def list it, particularly if it could be something that helps the business--computer science, business. Even philosophy

by Anonymousreply 22July 13, 2020 4:31 PM

Then again, commercial acting seems quite lucrative. I ran look at the insurance dud with the emu.
