Why is “He Wasn’t Man Enough For Me” Toni Braxton’s last hit?

She hasn’t been able to produce a single hit since that single, and that album was her last successful album.

I don’t get it. She’s very talented and has a few classic songs, and does have access to good writers and producers. I don’t know why they can’t get another hit for her. It’s not like she still doesn’t have her unique voice.

PS I always loved this song. I still listen to it sometimes. It’s so good!!!

Also, she looked beautiful during this period.

I remember when she won her Grammy for this song and wore that whore dress.

Going bankrupt many times probably derailed her career. It's a shame because that album she did a few years ago with Babyface actually had many good songs on it.

by Anonymousreply 1July 13, 2020 12:05 AM

R1 she won a Grammy for that album. Her last Grammy to date, and first one since 2001

by Anonymousreply 2July 13, 2020 12:07 AM

I mean, time marches on, OP. Pop music and poppy r&b are pretty cruel to the longterm players. There aren't that many pop artists who were successful in the 90s and early 2000s who can still sell, so it's hardly unique to Toni.

by Anonymousreply 3July 13, 2020 12:08 AM

I love Toni Braxton. Saw her in concert at her peak and she was terrific.

by Anonymousreply 4July 13, 2020 12:09 AM

Between the bankruptcies, she developed lupus (allegedly because of her breast implants, one of which burst while she was on a plane), dealing with an autistic son...she had a lot on her plate. I absolutely adored her in the beginning; she swore that she'd never get a weave and it's one of the first things she did when she got more popular. And a nose job, which she didn't need. She found out the hard way that L.A.FACE was not to be trusted when it came to money and paying their peeps - ask TLC and Pebbles about that.

My 23 year old sister is a huge music fan, and loves 80s rock and pop the most. She is funny with most female artists, and usually isn’t into super pop type female artists (she doesn’t care for Britney minus a few songs, hates Madonna etc.) and if she does like them is because they have a larger voice (she loves Xtina). The other day I mentioned Janet to her and she goes “I don’t like any of her songs. But I like Toni Braxton”. I rolled my eyes that she had to let me know she likes a different black artist from the 90s to make up for not liking Janet lol

by Anonymousreply 6July 13, 2020 12:14 AM

R5, she DOES seem like a good mother. And you're right, she didn't need a nose job. And she didn't need implants either.

by Anonymousreply 7July 13, 2020 12:16 AM

She’s had some great albums since but the country’s tastes moved on

by Anonymousreply 8July 13, 2020 12:17 AM

It is a shame, OP. The Heat was a great album - while I like Just Be A Man About It, The Heat, Gimme Some, Fairy Tale and Never Just For A Ring could've all been singles. More Than A Woman was another great album that didn't promoted since she was knocked up. Hit The Freeway was a decent song but Let Me Show You The Way Out, A Better Man, Selfish and Tell Me all could've been hits IMO.

by Anonymousreply 9July 13, 2020 12:29 AM

Tastes change. Ask Sheena Easton and Teena Marie.

by Anonymousreply 10July 13, 2020 12:36 AM

I love the remix of Hit The Freeway. The DJ would play it for me because he knew I'd burn a hole in the dance floor.

by Anonymousreply 11July 13, 2020 12:37 AM

Arent they both dead.

by Anonymousreply 12July 13, 2020 12:37 AM

Didn't she lose "Crazy In Love" to Beyonce?

by Anonymousreply 13July 13, 2020 12:49 AM

R13 I’m pretty sure it was written for Beyoncé

by Anonymousreply 14July 13, 2020 12:50 AM

I think she waiting too long between albums (4 years between Secrets and The Heat).

by Anonymousreply 15July 13, 2020 12:57 AM

Thanks R11. Considering there were several remixes of Hit the Freeway, Ill never know which one caused you to burn a hole in the dancefloor. Snicker.

by Anonymousreply 16July 13, 2020 1:34 AM

Isn't her sister the popular one these days??

by Anonymousreply 17July 13, 2020 2:31 AM

Toni Tenille?

by Anonymousreply 18July 13, 2020 2:34 AM

The aughts were all about clapping your buttcheeks together while hanging upside down on a stripper pole.

by Anonymousreply 19July 13, 2020 3:03 AM

Versace dinner plates?!?!?

Girl, even I don't eat off those!

by Anonymousreply 20July 13, 2020 3:08 AM

Good insight, R19. It was a trashy time.

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2020 3:16 AM

Was it this one R11?

Did Thiefonyce and Jay-Z’s steal Toni's idea to sample Tupac Shakur’s ”Me and My Girlfriend” for ”’03 Bonnie & Clyde,”.

by Anonymousreply 23July 13, 2020 7:43 AM

For some reason, even with working with various producers, her post-2000 music has just been really plain.

by Anonymousreply 24July 13, 2020 8:02 AM

She was bouncing too many checks.

Bit seriously, I love Breathe Again, Spanish Guitar, and Unbreak My Heart, which the music video was based on Babs version of ASIB. They even got it down to her Jewfro.

by Anonymousreply 26July 13, 2020 8:18 AM

The Art of Love from THE HEAT is Janet Jackson-level freak nasty sexy hot.

by Anonymousreply 28July 13, 2020 10:53 AM

She isn’t the only pop/R&B diva who hasn’t had a hit since 2001.

by Anonymousreply 29July 13, 2020 11:02 AM

R29 Tell me about it! My last number one was 20 years ago this year!

by Anonymousreply 30July 13, 2020 11:30 AM

Janet’s career was ruined by Timberlake

by Anonymousreply 31July 13, 2020 1:03 PM

Didn't many of the artists who signed with LaFace Records declare bankruptcy or was it just Toni and TLC?

by Anonymousreply 32July 13, 2020 1:09 PM

I wonder If this song released today will it be cancelled for being "transphobic" ?

by Anonymousreply 33July 13, 2020 2:03 PM

COAD was big. Madonna had a few years on Janet and Toni.

by Anonymousreply 34July 13, 2020 2:42 PM

Madonna was huge but never received the accolades of most of her peers

by Anonymousreply 35July 13, 2020 3:29 PM

Her Vegas residency lasted longer than Janet’s, right?

by Anonymousreply 36July 14, 2020 6:30 AM

Janet only did a limited engagement and was very successful with reviews and box office.

by Anonymousreply 37July 14, 2020 10:17 AM

I've heard she was playing at 80% capacity...

by Anonymousreply 38July 14, 2020 10:40 AM

I was at her last show and it was packed.

As for Toni, she's still putting out quality music. Not everything is about Hot 100 chart placement. When you reach the respected plateau that Toni achieved as being a 30 year veteran in R&B, and can still earn a lucrative career performing your hits in concert, then having a "hit" isn't really all that important.

by Anonymousreply 39July 14, 2020 10:56 AM

As someone who used to love Toni in the 90’s/early 00’s, the truth is that her music for the last 15 years is plain. None of it stands out. Also her husky voice has limited range.

by Anonymousreply 40July 14, 2020 6:38 PM

Who cares about range? I’m tired of people using that to hate on people.

Her husky voice is UNIQUE. I’d rather hear that than yet another belter (which are usually screamers)

by Anonymousreply 41July 14, 2020 6:56 PM

[quote]Who cares about range? I’m tired of people using that to hate on people.

Some of us do get bored with singers that have no range and just because people point that out doesn’t mean they’re “hating” on anyone Toni Stan.🙄

by Anonymousreply 42July 14, 2020 8:11 PM

OP, I think the bigger question is how long is Tamar Braxton going to try and get one hit?

by Anonymousreply 43July 15, 2020 12:28 AM

R22 they played this at my favorite watering hole in Philadelphia - The Post. Total trash bar with the best videos.
