Why is “He Wasn’t Man Enough For Me” Toni Braxton’s last hit?
She hasn’t been able to produce a single hit since that single, and that album was her last successful album.
I don’t get it. She’s very talented and has a few classic songs, and does have access to good writers and producers. I don’t know why they can’t get another hit for her. It’s not like she still doesn’t have her unique voice.
PS I always loved this song. I still listen to it sometimes. It’s so good!!!
Also, she looked beautiful during this period.
I remember when she won her Grammy for this song and wore that whore dress.

Going bankrupt many times probably derailed her career. It's a shame because that album she did a few years ago with Babyface actually had many good songs on it.

R1 she won a Grammy for that album. Her last Grammy to date, and first one since 2001

I mean, time marches on, OP. Pop music and poppy r&b are pretty cruel to the longterm players. There aren't that many pop artists who were successful in the 90s and early 2000s who can still sell, so it's hardly unique to Toni.

I love Toni Braxton. Saw her in concert at her peak and she was terrific.

Between the bankruptcies, she developed lupus (allegedly because of her breast implants, one of which burst while she was on a plane), dealing with an autistic son...she had a lot on her plate. I absolutely adored her in the beginning; she swore that she'd never get a weave and it's one of the first things she did when she got more popular. And a nose job, which she didn't need. She found out the hard way that L.A.FACE was not to be trusted when it came to money and paying their peeps - ask TLC and Pebbles about that.

My 23 year old sister is a huge music fan, and loves 80s rock and pop the most. She is funny with most female artists, and usually isn’t into super pop type female artists (she doesn’t care for Britney minus a few songs, hates Madonna etc.) and if she does like them is because they have a larger voice (she loves Xtina). The other day I mentioned Janet to her and she goes “I don’t like any of her songs. But I like Toni Braxton”. I rolled my eyes that she had to let me know she likes a different black artist from the 90s to make up for not liking Janet lol

R5, she DOES seem like a good mother. And you're right, she didn't need a nose job. And she didn't need implants either.

She’s had some great albums since but the country’s tastes moved on

It is a shame, OP. The Heat was a great album - while I like Just Be A Man About It, The Heat, Gimme Some, Fairy Tale and Never Just For A Ring could've all been singles. More Than A Woman was another great album that didn't promoted since she was knocked up. Hit The Freeway was a decent song but Let Me Show You The Way Out, A Better Man, Selfish and Tell Me all could've been hits IMO.

I love the remix of Hit The Freeway. The DJ would play it for me because he knew I'd burn a hole in the dance floor.

Thanks R11. Considering there were several remixes of Hit the Freeway, Ill never know which one caused you to burn a hole in the dancefloor. Snicker.

For some reason, even with working with various producers, her post-2000 music has just been really plain.

She was bouncing too many checks.
Bit seriously, I love Breathe Again, Spanish Guitar, and Unbreak My Heart, which the music video was based on Babs version of ASIB. They even got it down to her Jewfro.

I was at her last show and it was packed.
As for Toni, she's still putting out quality music. Not everything is about Hot 100 chart placement. When you reach the respected plateau that Toni achieved as being a 30 year veteran in R&B, and can still earn a lucrative career performing your hits in concert, then having a "hit" isn't really all that important.

As someone who used to love Toni in the 90’s/early 00’s, the truth is that her music for the last 15 years is plain. None of it stands out. Also her husky voice has limited range.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 14, 2020 6:38 PM

Who cares about range? I’m tired of people using that to hate on people.
Her husky voice is UNIQUE. I’d rather hear that than yet another belter (which are usually screamers)

Some of us do get bored with singers that have no range and just because people point that out doesn’t mean they’re “hating” on anyone Toni Stan.🙄
