Tony Shalhoub --- nice guy or cunt?

Have been binge-watching Monk during quarantine and heat. Amazon is going to drop it from Prime in a couple of weeks. So I have been enjoying Tony Shalhoub and have seen him at award acceptance things on youtube, and he seems like he might be a really good actor. As in, whenever the camera's on. But then I saw this tribute thing on youtube, and watch him on the red carpet with the rest of the principals from Monk (beginning at 1:10), including Bitty Schram and he completely freezes them out. The rest of the cast are chatty with each other, but he is off totally on his own. With his wife, Brooke Adams, whom he fawns over in every public reference.

On a previous datalounge thread, TS was impugned as being a cunt and someone had stories from the set of Monk, but never revealed any of them. What is up with this guy?

And yes, by the way, Ted Levine was hot.

So what is the story here? Why did Bitty Schram get frozen out after only 2.5 seasons? I thought he was great on that show.

I work in the service industry and have encountered Shalhoub and his wife , both raging cunts but the wife is the worst.

by Anonymousreply 1July 11, 2020 8:42 PM

I just remember how hot he looked in his tight jeans on WINGS.

by Anonymousreply 2July 11, 2020 8:42 PM

His wife is a doll. I worked with her in NY and loved her. Only met him once, shy I think

by Anonymousreply 3July 11, 2020 8:44 PM

I liked the the first seasons with Bitty Schram. Then after that other blonde took over I lost interest in the show, she wasn’t as good.

by Anonymousreply 4July 11, 2020 8:44 PM

He and Brooke Adams had COVID.

by Anonymousreply 5July 11, 2020 8:50 PM

The second woman was nowhere near as good as Bitty Schram.

by Anonymousreply 6July 11, 2020 8:51 PM

R2, I seem to recall his wearing Mom-jeans on WINGS, No?

by Anonymousreply 7July 11, 2020 8:51 PM

[6] Wonder what the story behind her leaving.

by Anonymousreply 8July 11, 2020 8:58 PM

Schrams replacement stunk and ruined the show. Shalhoub and his wife both seem like rancid assholes.

by Anonymousreply 9July 11, 2020 8:58 PM

Well he is good friends with Patricia Heaton's husband and was best man at their wedding...

by Anonymousreply 10July 11, 2020 9:00 PM

[quote] [R2], I seem to recall his wearing Mom-jeans on WINGS, No?

Well I guess compared to the trashy skinny jeans so many are wearing today they were more for a mature man. So I'll concede to snug rather than tight.

by Anonymousreply 11July 11, 2020 9:05 PM

r9 Yes! The show turned overly corny after Schram's departure, Monk and Sharona had a tragedy to them, they felt like real people, the show had just the right amount of grit

by Anonymousreply 12July 11, 2020 9:06 PM

So where's that industry insider who claimed Shalhoub and his wife are both assholes? He implied he had stories. Cuz so far I've heard insiders claim they're great and others claim they're assholes.

by Anonymousreply 13July 11, 2020 9:13 PM

R13 My guess is they're fantastic to the people who can do something to them or for them while everyone else gets treated like shit.

by Anonymousreply 14July 11, 2020 9:15 PM

Or money changed them.

by Anonymousreply 15July 11, 2020 9:16 PM

well R14, that might explain the conflicting reports. But what about freezing Bitty Schram out on the red carpet? And maybe more tellingly, the rest of the cast supporting her. Watch that clip on the red carpet. It was practically lunch room in junior high.

by Anonymousreply 16July 11, 2020 9:23 PM

R16 I've always suspected that there was a nasty story behind Schrams departure. For all we know Shalhoub played a part in it.

by Anonymousreply 17July 11, 2020 9:26 PM

Bitty Schram demanded more money before her contract was up. The producers told her no. She thought she had them over a barrel but when she stopped showing up for work, they fired her and recast.

by Anonymousreply 18July 11, 2020 9:29 PM

^ Forgot to add that they did bring her back as a guest star twice in the last season.

by Anonymousreply 19July 11, 2020 9:31 PM

Look how trim he was back during his Wings days.

Suzanne Somers syndrome.

by Anonymousreply 21July 11, 2020 9:36 PM

I don't think she stopped showing up. No one said that, not even the producers. There was no halt or slowdown in production either.

And she was working for about $10K/episode. Tony Shalhoub for at least 10X that. I think it was reasonable after 2.5 years to renegotiate that contract.

by Anonymousreply 22July 11, 2020 9:43 PM

Agree about Bitty. I still watched, but the show lost part of its edge when she left. I like Tony, would prefer he not be an ass.

by Anonymousreply 23July 11, 2020 9:47 PM

R23 I agree. But if he IS an ass, I wouldn't watch the non-Bitty episodes.

by Anonymousreply 24July 11, 2020 9:51 PM

I like Natalie much better than Sharona. Monk is freak enough, having two freak leads is disconcerting and annoying. Natalie made a good straight man to the freak.

by Anonymousreply 25July 11, 2020 9:52 PM

no. Natalie was boring. Sharona was not a freak. She was working class. Sort of uber-normal. Highlighted Monk's weirdness.

by Anonymousreply 26July 11, 2020 9:54 PM

Who'd have ever imagined he win a Tony for Best Lead Actor -- in a MUSICAL?

by Anonymousreply 27July 11, 2020 9:56 PM

Natalie was supposed to be rich (of the davenport toothpaste fortune), but was nevertheless a struggling working mom who was always broke, because her snooty family disapproved of her dead husband, the Air force fighter pilot hero, who was inexplicably, a fuck up.

If they had just stuck with Bitty Schram, they'd have been so much better off.

by Anonymousreply 28July 11, 2020 9:59 PM

Brooke is Legend as far as DL is concerned for being on the receiving end of one of the greatest lines in cinema history...

I like him as the dad on Mrs Mazel. And he reminds me of my dentist who is a great guy. So he’s good in my book.

by Anonymousreply 30July 11, 2020 10:05 PM

Bitty could be hard to look at in some shots. Shalhoub, who I admire as an actor, is no oil painting himself. Natalie (Traylor Howard) was pleasing to the eye from all angles. I enjoyed the change.

by Anonymousreply 31July 11, 2020 10:09 PM

I thought Jason Gray Stanford (Randy) was kinda hot, but I’ve had a thing for guys with a five head.

Sharona had appeal, she was interesting and fun to look - I found Natalie to be totally inoffensive and totally dull

by Anonymousreply 33July 11, 2020 10:16 PM

fun to look *at

by Anonymousreply 34July 11, 2020 10:16 PM

[quote]So where's that industry insider who claimed Shalhoub and his wife are both assholes? He implied he had stories. Cuz so far I've heard insiders claim they're great and others claim they're assholes.

I never met his wife except in passing (and she was pleasant) but I worked with him 6 days a week for months on The Band's Visit on Broadway. An absolute sweetheart.: kind, humble - and yes, a little Very professional and reserved, but maybe a touch socially awkward. A fine stage performer, and one of the rare ones who draw attention to fellow performers by the attention they receive and reflect that focus back to their colleagues.

Just watch him in the Tony performance of Omar Shariff. He never takes his eyes off Lenk.

In that clip OP posted it looks like the people who are supporting players on his show are socializing while Shaloub, who is the star of their show he's responding to photographer's request that he stopped and posed for them.

I don't watch red carpet footage much. Do red carpet photographers usually ask everyone in the show to separately pose? Do they ask for a group shot of the whole cast? I don't know but it certainly didn't look like he was shunning of the rest of the cast.

Maybe he's a jerk. I don't really know, but that video isn't proof either way.

by Anonymousreply 36July 11, 2020 10:18 PM

agreed re original video on red carpet. But still weird.

by Anonymousreply 37July 11, 2020 10:25 PM

Thanks R35 for that post. I loved it.

by Anonymousreply 38July 11, 2020 10:31 PM

R35, thanks. I saw the show twice, once with Shalhoub and once without. That was an astonishingly heartfelt performance.

by Anonymousreply 39July 11, 2020 10:38 PM

He’s hot.

by Anonymousreply 40July 11, 2020 10:51 PM

Shalhoub has been nominated for a Tony several times and he himself said he was astonished to win for Best Lead Actor in a Musical. It should be noted that although the character is the male lead he has almost no singing.

by Anonymousreply 41July 11, 2020 10:54 PM

I was too busy jacking off to Tim Daly to notice what Tony was wearing.

by Anonymousreply 42July 11, 2020 11:12 PM

a starstruck colleague misplaced their order at the counter. Wifey is older and frailer in person I did not recognize her. I asked what name the order was placed under and she told me 'TONY'! I couldn't find their order or my colleague to figure out wtf went wrong and wifey bellowed WERE LEAVING ! Tony followed her out like a dog with a simple ass look on his face. It was busier than usual, other clients were waiting for assistance but a solution could have been offered, wifey wanted to fight. I saw them a few times after that incident and took care to stay out of their way.

by Anonymousreply 43July 11, 2020 11:26 PM

during the moments I looked for their order, wifey talked under her breath and drummed her fingers on the counter. She made a scene in front of other customers waiting for service .

by Anonymousreply 44July 11, 2020 11:38 PM

I worked with him several years on Wings. Sweet, kind, professional and seemed to get along with everyone. Always great to me and I was not one of the higher ups. Just a good guy.

by Anonymousreply 45July 12, 2020 12:14 AM

[quote] during the moments I looked for their order, wifey talked under her breath and drummed her fingers on the counter. She made a scene in front of other customers waiting for service .

Nobody thought to utter “So...which one of you bitches is my mother?” to diffuse the tension?

by Anonymousreply 46July 12, 2020 12:52 AM

didn't recognize her, she is much older and has an old woman's voice. he looks the same in person, and she looks like his mom.

by Anonymousreply 47July 12, 2020 1:14 AM

R43 What a couple of smelly turds. Adams is washed up bitch anyway. One thing I hated when I did restaurant work were douchebag couples. There was always one half of the couple who passively sat by while their wife /husband /fuck buddy acted like a raging cunt. Adams and Shalhoub sound like the A Hole couple played by Sudeikis and Wiig in SNL.

by Anonymousreply 48July 12, 2020 1:47 AM

^ Or Harry and Megs.

by Anonymousreply 49July 12, 2020 1:51 AM

Brooke Adams is a descendant of John Quincy, I believe. They have a home on Martha's Vineyard, that Brooke Adams sewed curtains, bedspreads and tablecloths for.

I am frankly happy to hear he might be whipped by her, but also that she has her better angels as well.

She is 6 years older than he is.

by Anonymousreply 50July 12, 2020 2:25 AM

Some guys can't take care of themselves. Can't do laundry or cook or clean a house. Without Mommy they can't survive. So they need a housekeeper. As Thornton Wilder said, "Marriage is a bribe to make a housekeeper thing she's a householder."

I don't know if that's what going on here, but check out Prince Harry and Patton Oswald.

by Anonymousreply 51July 12, 2020 9:45 AM

The Monk cast did an in-character PSA/skit about staying safe during the Coronavirus pandemic, so I'll give him a plus for that.

by Anonymousreply 52July 12, 2020 11:20 AM

He was the 2nd youngest in like 10 or 12 kids, so R51's theory might be en point. He was the baby.

by Anonymousreply 53July 12, 2020 2:00 PM

He always seemed like a poor man’s Stanley Tucci to me.

by Anonymousreply 61July 14, 2020 4:00 AM

I want to like Tony Shalhoub more, but his acting schtick is so limited.

I've never seen a less comic actor become known for playing comedy when in my opinion he can't....at all.

He really stinks up "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" even though he wins awards for it!

by Anonymousreply 62July 14, 2020 4:48 AM

Thank you [R56] for posting that.

I'm a little surprised that it takes 6 writers to produce a six minute video, but it did make me laugh. I needed a break from pandemic anxiety.

by Anonymousreply 63July 14, 2020 5:36 AM

It's verificatia.

by Anonymousreply 65July 14, 2020 1:25 PM

Thank you, R56.

I love Monk.

I have a bit of OCD myself and that show makes me laugh.

I loved the episode where the man called him to his house, at night, and admitted he had the plague.

I fell off the sofa laughing.

by Anonymousreply 66July 14, 2020 8:20 PM

The Plague? i don't remember that one but i remember the one where the client calls him to a late night meeting and reveals he is a leper and hilarity did indeed ensure.

by Anonymousreply 67July 15, 2020 3:17 AM

So funny this thread is here. I just finished a binge watch of the series and was wondering if the cast might come together for a mini-series about Monk dealing with pandemic and solving a few crimes in between. Good thing I searched. It would be a good idea once studios start production once things settle.

Yeah. I can see Adams being a shrew or bordering. That was her persona on her guest appearances (flight attendant, crazy cat lady, tough sheriff).

by Anonymousreply 68August 15, 2020 10:29 PM

I love Brooke Adams from Gas Food Lodging- great actress. She should have got more opportunity. So she got pissy about an order. No one is perfect. She might have had a bad day.. I have been a cunt on occasion. Haven’t we all?

by Anonymousreply 69August 15, 2020 10:48 PM

Shalhoub is one of these sad cases where you have a actor who does widely varied roles and genres--so much so that seeing him is always exciting because you do not know what you are going to get.

Then they get well-paying TV and film roles. One role breaks out and that is all they do for the rest of their lives. They begin as great artists then become one-note schtich meisters.

by Anonymousreply 70August 15, 2020 11:03 PM

r70: I don't think Antonio, Monk, and Mrs. Maisel's father are similar roles at all.

by Anonymousreply 71August 16, 2020 2:04 AM

I do not know who Antonio is, but Monk and Mr. Maisel are both high-strung, obsessive eccentrics who cannot met the world on the world's terms.

His work with pre-Monk included Angelo in Measure for Measure, Solyoni, Figaro, Pozzo, Poins, Scoop in the Heidi Chronicles, etc.

This is a much wider range than we see him playing in film and television today.

by Anonymousreply 72August 16, 2020 4:16 AM

Both, OP.

Beloved cunt.

by Anonymousreply 73August 16, 2020 4:18 AM

You don't know who Antonio was, but you feel entitled to have an opinion on Shalhoub?
