If you get close to these couples as part of a couple yourself, and do the double dating , play dates with the kids thing, you realize that these are usually really nice people whose marriages are just not working out, and they’re very unhappy with each other. The quick fix are more kids, or accepting the situation and this is when the husband quietly starts affairs, as a way to cope, or descends further into the booze or pot. The wives get really focused on the kids, her aging parents, yoga, Pilates, shopping, finding a new house to move into for the tiniest of reasons like that school in Santa Monica has ballet classes for little Jules every Wednesday afternoon, or the best bff couple moved to that area, and now they too, should go and the husband goes along, like a wind up toy going in whatever direction his wife points him.

This is what many Hollywood marriages are all about. It’s also what living in Hollywood for years on end, oftentimes leads to. It’s a very small community, in a very large city. The more money and family traditions and expectations thrown at you, along with the money required to work and live there, are a harsh way to live and oftentimes not worth it. People look at it and think, “What the fuck just happened? I’m 46 years old, and chained to a mortgage, a family, and a job or career that have become meaningless to me, and I cannot walk away because these kids cannot be left alone with their anorexic mom or their drunk dad”.

I am happy for these two. Maybe they can find personal happiness and live more meaningful lives apart from each other while coparenting and addressing their personal mental health issues.
