I have a friend in another state who was arrested for possession of this substance. He called me because I'm an attorney but I've never heard of this stuff.
I've done some basic research but wondered if anyone here had any input.

It's a plant-based opiate native to Vietnam. A lot people use it to either get off heroin/pills or in place of pharmaceutical painkillers. It should be legal everywhere, but the government and traffickers can't make money on it. And it is legal in many states and not federally banned. It's primarily ingested either in tea, in capsules or as spoonfuls of dry powder. Some sellers offer liquid concentrates. There's a lot of variation between the strains: reds are more for pain management, white veins make people alert, greens and golds are a mix of the two. There's a Kratom Association that might be able to help your friend find a lawyer.

Good strategy, OP - this is definitely the place for a lawyer to do research! We can definitely advise you.

Of course I've Googled it. I was just curious if there were any users on the board. It's not illegal in most states.

My buddy is a bit of a fuck up and has been addicted to opiates for as long as I can remember. He said he was using the Kratom to try to withdraw from the opiates more comfortably.

I have been using it for about three years now. I had pain meds after a procedure and, honestly, I was hooked psychologically if not physically after two weeks. Not wanting to become an addict, I researched and found kratom. It has given me energy, helped my anxiety, and boosted my mood. It's really high fiber (sometimes too high) which is a nice bonus. It's legal here in Ohio, though they seem to always be talking about banning it. It is legal in most states, so I can't imagine the penalty will be too high?

Is this another psuedo drug like CBD?
Worthless.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 10, 2020 8:35 PM |
Also, there are a lot of people involved in trying to keep it legal/ get it legalized, the "AKA", you might have him talk to someone associated with them. They seem really knowledgeable and helpful.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 10, 2020 8:36 PM |
I've been taking it for a 4 months. It helped me quit drinking and smoking. You also get a buzz sometimes, and it's cheap.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 10, 2020 8:36 PM |
Everyone's different, but it's definitely not worthless.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 10, 2020 8:37 PM |
Be careful. This is the stuff that rends Superman powerless.

That's what I thought too, R6, but after a little research I'm not so sure. It appears to be a partial opiate agonist, meaning it binds to the receptors. It's legal where I am. My moto is anything in moderation so I think I might try it just to see what all the commotion is about.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 10, 2020 8:43 PM |
I was referring to CBD being worthless.
Let me clairify that anything is better than big pharma.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 10, 2020 8:45 PM |
Your "moto"?

Apologies for offending your delicate sensibilities, R13. I omitted a "T." Actually, Siri omitted a "T" because I tend to dictate almost everything.
In any event, because it's legal in my state, I tried this stuff over the weekend. They sell it in loose powder form in smoke shops here so upon recommendation from a very good looking college kid I consumed two grams of Red Maeng Da. The kid was in the shop stocking up and bought a damn kilo of the stuff! He claimed it was the exact same thing as "Oxycontin Light." Unfortunately for me it was nothing like that at all. I honestly felt drunk and not in a good way. I was genuinely worried driving the fifteen minutes it took me to get home. The effects weren't the warm, fuzzy relaxed feeling of alcohol or opiates. Once I got home I felt as if I'd taken a sleeping pill and didn't have good motor control function. I even felt a little off the next day.
I can't believe people like this stuff.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 13, 2020 3:52 PM |
for people in constant pain, feeling drunk is probably an improvement.
i have long considered trying it, because i have a borked tailbone which causes me constant, daily, low level pain whining away in the background of my life, setting my teeth on edge.
but my reluctance is due to having way too many addicts in my direct family line and immediate family, whom i honestly believe were medicating their mental health issues in the cheap, poor people way with alcohol, tobacco, pot, meth, cocaine and whatever else was handy.

I've tried it a few times, not sure how good the quality was but it made me speedy and nauseous. I put it in a "tea."
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 13, 2020 4:24 PM |
They say if you take too much of it it will definitely make you nauseated, R16.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 13, 2020 5:14 PM |
I take some now and again, the white vain. Gives me a ton of energy in the morning--I mix it into my smoothies. I try not to take it more than 2/3 times a week because I don't want to become dependent. I've only had very positive results from it.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 13, 2020 11:38 PM |
R3 If I were you, I'd avoid using Google to look up any sort of drug. Use Duck Duck Go -- it never traces searches.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 13, 2020 11:59 PM |
Where do you get it, R18?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 14, 2020 12:09 AM |
OP why did you feel the need to come here and shill this crap?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 14, 2020 12:22 AM |
I tried finding a place online to buy some but came up with nothing. What's the deal with that?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 14, 2020 12:49 AM |
I bought some awhile ago - the powder- Valkyrie red Bali - but it was too gross to consume. I tried putting it in juice, shakes, yogurt. I still have it sitting on a shelf nearly two years later.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 14, 2020 12:51 AM |
I wonder if the unopened jar is still good? (I had two) I bought it from here. I’d have to buy pill packets.

R22 there are online vendors everywhere. This one independently tests every shipment of Kratom that they get and they even offer a money back guarantee.

20, I'min WA State where you can find it nearly anywhere from head shops to supplement megastores to health boutiques. Comes in powder form. I'd imagine you could order some by mail?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 18, 2020 9:10 PM |
My husband is addicted to it. He drinks it 2x a day. He gets it in the mail.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 18, 2020 9:17 PM |
It's harmless. Yes, it's technically an opiate, but nothing like you'd think. You'll feel nauseous taking too much before you'd ever really get a "high", and calling the effects a "high" is going way too far. As others said, it's good for withdrawal, but it's not like it's anywhere close to other opiates. As far as I know, no one has died/ overdosed because it only does so much, then it plateaus. You'd puke before you could OD.
It's a joke to even treat it as a drug. Most countries allow codeine over the counter, which is stronger than kratom. The comparison to CBD was a fair one.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 18, 2020 9:24 PM |
R28 probably no different than drinking caffeine a couple times a day. There's people that claim they have an "addiction", but it's more like a dependency, similar to coffee. I've yet to hear of or see withdrawals like you can get from alcohol, opiates, cigarettes, or whatever.
