The Niecy Nash Appreciation Thread

Wherein we discuss her talent and overall fabulousness. She's earned it!

She's proven she's equally great in ridiculous comedies ("Reno 911!"), powerful dramas ("Selma," "When They See Us") and all points in between ("Getting On," "Claws" et al.). Heck, she's even terrific when she appears on "Match Game."

Do you have a favorite Niecy Nash role/performance/project?

Go!

by Anonymousreply 60September 1, 2020 1:00 PM

I love her. Great voice. Particularly liked her in Getting On... nobody did weary better than she did.

by Anonymousreply 1July 8, 2020 4:44 PM

She was interviewed the night she got booted off Dancing With the Stars; asked how she felt, Nash replied: "I'm HUNGRY!"

by Anonymousreply 2July 8, 2020 4:46 PM

I've only seen her in Reno 911 but she was hilarious in that.

by Anonymousreply 3July 8, 2020 4:48 PM

My favorite Niecy Nash story is when I worked on Scream Queens and she changed up her delivery on every take, adding her own funny improv.

The main reason I think she's so cool is that when the camera wasn't on her and shooting other actor's coverage, Niecy stayed on set (not always the case, ex. Zooey Deschanel) and still delivered the same hilarious performance, and added her own on-the-spot lines to the scene.

by Anonymousreply 4July 8, 2020 4:50 PM

I loved her on Clean House. She was really compassionate to people with hoarding tendencies.

by Anonymousreply 5July 8, 2020 4:51 PM

LOVE that, R4! And just cements my existing adoration for her.

And I agree, R1 -- "Getting On" is some of her best, most understated work, IMO.

by Anonymousreply 6July 8, 2020 4:51 PM

I watched her show she hosted years ago where they did home makeovers for hoarders. She had a wonderful, warm sense of humor and seemed to genuinely care about the wellbeing of the people whose houses they were clearing out. Don't think thwy actually helped them, but goddamn was it entertaining.

She deserves success a lot more than a lot of the lazy, slow women who are big on TV. Love her.

by Anonymousreply 7July 8, 2020 4:51 PM

She played a therapist in Never Have I Ever, a recent Netflix series, and brought a lot of warmth and empathy to the character.

by Anonymousreply 8July 8, 2020 4:58 PM

I first saw her in Getting On, where she was such a bright light. Now I search out her performances.

by Anonymousreply 9July 8, 2020 4:58 PM

I like her. She has said that she'll never again take the "sassy black friend" role like she did for Reno 911 and Getting On. It'll be interesting to see which roles she accepts.

by Anonymousreply 10July 8, 2020 5:00 PM

Yeah she has brilliant comedic timing but has only been taking on more serious roles in recent years. I think its a smart move to diversify, Tiffany Haddish is the go to comedic actress right now

by Anonymousreply 11July 8, 2020 5:13 PM

R8 I'll have to check that out, that's a role she was made for.

by Anonymousreply 12July 8, 2020 5:23 PM

Moving On...the scene when Didi asked Dr. James for the money she was owed for some driveway work her husband. The way she said, "I feel like a beggar" just really floored me.

by Anonymousreply 13July 8, 2020 5:25 PM

She's one of the best. I'm glad she's appreciated. I just loved her as the therapist in Never Have I Ever. Those were some of the best scenes in a very good show.

by Anonymousreply 14July 8, 2020 5:26 PM

LOVE Niecy! She is so talented, that I'm certain that she has Oscar in her future!

My dream is for Niecy Nash and Regina King to do a serious drama together!

by Anonymousreply 15July 8, 2020 5:28 PM

R15, how soon do you think she's got that Oscar in her future? I wish her well, of course, just thinking maybe she could put off any Oscar worthy work in the short term.

by Anonymousreply 16July 8, 2020 5:30 PM

I just saw a repeat of an episode of The Office where she had a brief appearance. She has the most expressive face. (It's the episode where Dwight is working at Staples. They're eating in the lunchroom together and Niecy is trying to be nice to 'the new guy' and Dwight is his typical asshole self.)

by Anonymousreply 17July 8, 2020 5:34 PM

She deserved an Emmy for Getting On. She played against type and was the moral heart of that show. She held it all together. All the performances are so good on that show but her performance was one that was understated And very real. Love her. So versatile.

Here’s a funny clip:

I love watching her. In anything!

Ooooooh. YES.

Universe: make it so!

by Anonymousreply 21July 8, 2020 5:47 PM

R17, that ain’t Neicy, that’s the seriously under appreciated Yvette Nicole Brown!

by Anonymousreply 22July 8, 2020 5:49 PM

^ Apparently.

by Anonymousreply 23July 8, 2020 5:50 PM

yes, that Language Barrier scene was awesome. "he says that don't no sense"

by Anonymousreply 24July 8, 2020 5:52 PM

R22 I'm laughing! You are so right!

I need to stop drinking in the morning...

by Anonymousreply 25July 8, 2020 5:54 PM

Getting On was beyond brilliant. All 3 leads knocked it out of the park. And Jean Smart was amazing when she made her guest appearances.

by Anonymousreply 26July 8, 2020 5:57 PM

That scene would never be written now, R19. It’s both so funny and so sad, and smart. The joke is not making fun not a “Chinese-y” language but it would be canceled for that reason these days. Omg niecy is so funny. I don’t see her role in “Getting On” as the “sassy black friend.” I found her very multi-dimensional and as someone said above the moral heart of the show. That being said, I do want to keep seeing her do a variety of roles, not be stuck in that archetype.

by Anonymousreply 27July 8, 2020 6:09 PM

I didn't see her as sassy black friend either... I saw hard working, damned sensible, worn out everywoman. I loved her because she had such strength and heart and dignity and was just fucking worn out almost every moment of every day.

by Anonymousreply 28July 8, 2020 6:20 PM

She has a great (if secondary) role on Hulu’s Mrs. America, so you should check that out too!

by Anonymousreply 29July 8, 2020 6:23 PM

She's a terrible match maker.

by Anonymousreply 30July 8, 2020 6:24 PM

I loved the episode with June Squib. When her character puked up on her, she didn't say anything, but turned away with this look of desperation. Thanks to HBO letting them have 3 seasons.

by Anonymousreply 31July 8, 2020 6:56 PM

She's freaking hilarious

by Anonymousreply 32July 8, 2020 6:58 PM

Foolishness!

by Anonymousreply 33July 8, 2020 7:02 PM

Alex Newell wants her to play his mother on next season of Zooey’s Extraordinary Playlist. But my question is does she sing well? That show has a lot of bad singers.

I need to marinate on this a little bit and I'll; get back to ya'

by Anonymousreply 35July 8, 2020 7:13 PM

She's one of the funniest people working today. This was one of my favorites from Getting On. You can see Borstein doing her best not to crack.

It just occurs to me that "Getting On, 2020" would just be about dead people. And the dying people caring for them.

by Anonymousreply 37July 8, 2020 7:39 PM

I love all the Niecy love in this thread! Glad to see I'm not alone in my appreciation for her talents. Carry on. :-)

by Anonymousreply 38July 9, 2020 12:41 PM

I read an interview with Niecy or Laurie Metcalf (I think it was Niecy) where she said that Getting On was her favorite show to work on because she didn't have to wear makeup.

I'm also grateful to HBO for giving us three seasons of the show. Every time I tried to convince a friend to watch it they said it sounded too depressing. Their loss.

by Anonymousreply 39July 9, 2020 3:06 PM

I must have read a different interview. Nash said when they approached her, they told her no makeup which she was pretty hesitant about. i think it was Wendy Williams(yes, I am scum)./

by Anonymousreply 40July 9, 2020 3:45 PM

Bumpin' for some Niecy love!

by Anonymousreply 41August 12, 2020 8:48 PM

I adore Claws. Everything about it. But Niecy is in a class by herself- she's what drag queens want to be.

by Anonymousreply 42August 12, 2020 9:28 PM

Without "Getting On," we'd never have been treated to the spectacle of Millie Helper giving Harry Dean Stanton a blowjob.

by Anonymousreply 43August 12, 2020 10:27 PM

Niecy's a doll. That's why she works so much. Everyone loves working with her, a true pro and a complete sweetheart. She just divorced husband #2. At her wedding, Miss J from ANTM caught the bouquet.

by Anonymousreply 44August 13, 2020 1:51 AM

Love her. Wish her the world. Liked her in everything - including the cleaning show which was so weird because it’s so not a “character”.

Getting On was one of my favorite shows ever. Genius writing, excellent actors. Should have gotten more hype.

by Anonymousreply 45August 13, 2020 3:19 AM

Totally agree. Best work Laurie Metcalf has done. The concept of the show was a tough sell, though: “It’s a comedy set in an elder-care hospital.”

by Anonymousreply 46August 13, 2020 9:24 AM

Ms. Nash is married again. This time to a woman.

Well that came out of left field.

by Anonymousreply 48August 31, 2020 8:34 PM

I like when she talks about her cousin Skillet.

by Anonymousreply 49August 31, 2020 8:37 PM

When Niecy cleans house, she really renovates!

Congrats on your late-in-life lesbianism, Niecy!

Gonna be some kitchen cleaning on that honeymoon.

by Anonymousreply 51August 31, 2020 8:44 PM

Did starring in the feminism extravaganza Mrs. America convert her?

If so, good for Hulu!

Congrats to the newlyweds!

by Anonymousreply 53August 31, 2020 8:50 PM

Married.

Where did they get married? Will they be canceled when Trump wins again?

by Anonymousreply 54August 31, 2020 11:34 PM

Well, I didn't see that coming. At all.

Hope they're happy. Niecy is a lot of fun and I've loved her since her "Reno 911" days, where her character's reaction to anything physical was "I could do that if I wasn't on my period."

by Anonymousreply 55September 1, 2020 1:27 AM

She is so fucking funny. Her comedic chemistry with weigl was everything on Reno 911

Why do lesbians who marry think the butch one has to dress like a groom? Can you imagine two guys marrying with the bottom always dressed as a bride ? Weird.

by Anonymousreply 57September 1, 2020 2:46 AM

It's not weird at all, R57. Why would they want to be dolled up like a princess for their wedding when they probably have never worn a dress since their moms forced them for Easter pictures? Would you rather have butch women be totally uncomfortable on their wedding day?

by Anonymousreply 58September 1, 2020 3:00 AM

Yay for Niecy! Like others, this one seems to have come out (pun intended) of left field, but good for her!

by Anonymousreply 59September 1, 2020 12:56 PM

Everyone seems very happy for her and that makes me happy. 🤗

I have black women friends who love her from Claws, straight male friends who love her from Reno 911, frau friends who love her from Clean House, and everyone I’ve told or discussed this news with has reacted the same way: “Wow...did not see that coming. Good for her! She’s so talented!”

Yay for Niecy Nash, the kind of under-the-radar celebrity who everyone appreciates but no one really ever stops to think much about.
