by Anonymousreply 98July 14, 2020 5:16 PM

Maybe he married well, or came into family $$$.

by Anonymousreply 1July 7, 2020 9:29 PM

Ask Eric Cartman.

by Anonymousreply 2July 7, 2020 9:30 PM

Talent

by Anonymousreply 3July 7, 2020 9:34 PM

He's single.

He's on Tinder all the time.

by Anonymousreply 4July 7, 2020 9:34 PM

Can't read the article as it's paywalled, but he's been touring and selling out shows in smaller venues across the country.

And I don't understand how ad revenue works on YouTube, but certainly he makes a good living off that, his videos are viewed by millions.

by Anonymousreply 5July 7, 2020 9:35 PM

Jeffrey Self seethes.

by Anonymousreply 6July 7, 2020 9:37 PM

I agree, R3 - TALENT. Great voice, clever writer, and producer. He's worked hard and has a huge following.

Good for him!

by Anonymousreply 7July 7, 2020 9:37 PM

He's not married, but he's making good money from both his youtube and his pre-covid ticket sales.

by Anonymousreply 8July 7, 2020 9:37 PM

I think he's very talented and I'm happy for him.

by Anonymousreply 9July 7, 2020 9:38 PM

I listened to a podcast interview he did and was shocked to learn that Rainbow is his REAL last name.

I mean who the fuck's last name is RAINBOW??

by Anonymousreply 10July 7, 2020 9:41 PM

Agreed.

by Anonymousreply 11July 7, 2020 9:41 PM

How much would a place like that cost per month? Would it include heating?

And... is that laminate flooring?

by Anonymousreply 12July 7, 2020 9:43 PM

His videos get millions of views, so he is getting ad money from those. And that really ads up. I get thousands of dollars every month from ads and I don't have his numbers.

Plus, before the pandemic, he was selling out large theaters for many nights during the year. He is probably VERY comfortable right now.

by Anonymousreply 13July 7, 2020 9:44 PM

I'm happy for him. I've been sharing his videos with family and they all seem to love him. I think Bunker Boy was a turning point.

by Anonymousreply 14July 7, 2020 9:46 PM

You do realize people make money from YouTube OP, don't you? He also did a live sold out tour all over the country last year.

by Anonymousreply 15July 7, 2020 9:48 PM

Well r13 now you MUST tell us more about the videos you make

by Anonymousreply 16July 7, 2020 9:48 PM

r13 = Punchy Players

by Anonymousreply 17July 7, 2020 9:50 PM

good apt; can't get a date.

by Anonymousreply 18July 7, 2020 9:54 PM

R13 i LOVVVVVE Punchy Players!

by Anonymousreply 19July 7, 2020 9:56 PM

He explains in the article: He made the money selling shirts and mugs, “Cuomosexual” etc

by Anonymousreply 20July 7, 2020 10:00 PM

Was kind if surprised to see he is such a gushing Star Fucker. He only answers and acknowledges celebs on his Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 21July 7, 2020 10:00 PM

He is insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 22July 7, 2020 10:04 PM

Of course, renting that big place in Manhattan is a lot of wasted money.

And he doesn't know if he will have appeal after Trump leaves office.

by Anonymousreply 24July 7, 2020 10:06 PM

He’s just terrific! A rare bright light in the grim Trump years.

by Anonymousreply 25July 7, 2020 10:12 PM

Good point r24. If Trump loses (please lord baby Jesus!) whats he going to do for content?

by Anonymousreply 26July 7, 2020 10:13 PM

True r24, but there will be no end of deplorable rhetoric for him to counter.

by Anonymousreply 27July 7, 2020 10:14 PM

He's living in his dream apt, good for him he deserves it.

by Anonymousreply 28July 7, 2020 10:20 PM

Good for him!

by Anonymousreply 29July 7, 2020 10:21 PM

I've never seen one of his videos, but it's a nice apartment and fairly well-decorated.

by Anonymousreply 30July 7, 2020 10:28 PM

His last apartment was almost a shoe box. His career has really taken off thanks to the wealth of material he gets from Trump, so he can afford a larger and nicer home.

by Anonymousreply 31July 7, 2020 10:58 PM

The YouTube star Randy Rainbow was 10 when his family relocated to South Florida from Commack, N.Y. For those who are fond of identifying silver linings, the unfortunate move furnished young Randy with a keen sense of purpose: getting back to New York as soon as possible.

“All the movies and TV shows I love take place in New York, and being a musical-theater fan, I was obsessed with Broadway,” said Mr. Rainbow, 39, who has harnessed that passion to concoct sublimely impish parodies about Donald Trump and Mr. Trump’s coterie with melodies borrowed from theater and film scores, as well as pop hits. The ubiquitous pink cat’s-eye glasses add a certain je ne sais quoi to the proceedings.

A sampling of Mr. Rainbow’s oeuvre, the basis for his 2019 prime-time Emmy nomination for outstanding short form variety series, includes “Omarosa!,” a jaundiced look at the “Apprentice” contender turned White House staffer, sung to the title song from “Oklahoma!,” and “Kavanaugh,” an account of the messy confirmation of the newest member of the U.S. Supreme Court, sung to the title song from “Camelot.”

“Cover Your Freakin’ Face!,” a number composed for a recent Nancy Pelosi fund-raiser, may be more familiar to you as “Put on a Happy Face” from “Bye Bye Birdie.” There’s also a tender paean to Andrew and Chris, the brothers Cuomo, set to “Sandy” from the film version of “Grease.”

The viral videos, the concert tours and a brisk business in merchandise (those signature pink glasses and the “From now on I identify as Cuomosexual” line of caps, mugs and tote bags) enabled Mr. Rainbow to move, last summer, from Astoria, Queens, his home base since returning north 18 years ago, to a corner two-bedroom rental on the Upper West Side.

Randy Rainbow, 39 Occupation: Writer and performer

My fair laundry: “Almost the first thing I noticed about the apartment was that it had a washer and dryer. It changes everything. Every time I wash my underwear, it’s like, ‘Thank you, Lord.’”

“You’ve caught me at a good time, because I’m now living in the apartment I’ve always dreamed of,” said Mr. Rainbow — yes, that’s his real name — who enumerated the view; the floor-to-ceiling windows; the two columns in the living room; the washer and dryer; and a separate room complete with green screen and prop closet to serve as his production studio.

“I really saved up,” he continued. “I didn’t want to make a lateral move to Manhattan. So I kept saying to myself, ‘One day, when I can do it right and live in a cute-doorman building, that’s when I’ll do it.’”

Mr. Rainbow travels light, which is to say that when Mr. Rainbow moves — he lived in four different, unprepossessing apartments in Queens — he doesn’t really need a moving truck.

“I find that when I go to a new place, I throw everything away,” he said. “And this apartment was so much nicer than the other places I’ve lived in in New York that I wanted to start from scratch.”

Randy Rainbow is awesome. He is G-A-Y through and through. He's not an Instaho. He's not young. He is flamboyant and his whole 'thing' is showtunes. And the public loves his often brilliant and usually hilarious skewers of the POS POTUS.

He's talented, fun and extremely astute and clever in his parodies on multiple levels. I don't see anything not to like about him, and I mean that especially as a representative for gay men.

Everything relating to gay men that I see emanating from most gay men is just worship of the male body.

Randy Rainbow represents everything about the notion I had when I was younger about gay identity--creativity, talent, intellect, wit, flair--that doesn't seem to be part of the collective gay identity any longer. Now it's just about trying to get an Aaron Schock body and show it off.

by Anonymousreply 39July 9, 2020 4:07 PM

[Quote] I mean that especially as a representative for gay men.

Were you elected or?

by Anonymousreply 40July 9, 2020 4:14 PM

Who's Aaron Schock? Seriously never heard of him. I agree with you about Randy though. He's a great talent, very intelligent and creative and an attractive man. He does lap up the love of the theatre lady stars and Kathy Griffin, but that's kind of inevitable, given what he does. He's nerdy and when nerdy guys get successful they chase their fantasy men/dick. Randy has a t y p e.

by Anonymousreply 41July 9, 2020 4:15 PM

Tasteful

by Anonymousreply 42July 9, 2020 4:18 PM

I like his work. He could do some Broadway theatre stuff. His queen manner is a plus in an enduring way.

by Anonymousreply 43July 9, 2020 4:30 PM

Has he done Torch Song Trilogy?

by Anonymousreply 44July 9, 2020 4:38 PM

I knew Randy socially (not that well though) when I lived in NYC, he's nothing like his persona. He's far more reserved, shy, and low key.

by Anonymousreply 45July 9, 2020 4:39 PM

Does he take skin care seriously?

by Anonymousreply 46July 9, 2020 4:44 PM

What kind of a question is that? You need a zip popped, Hon?

by Anonymousreply 47July 9, 2020 4:48 PM

His skin is one of the first things I noticed about him. He and Richard Madden must trade tips.

by Anonymousreply 53July 13, 2020 2:27 AM

I love Randy. Such a funny and talented bloke. I'm glad to learn he's made a financial success of it.

by Anonymousreply 54July 13, 2020 2:56 AM

YouTube ad revenue is only one income source. Looking at his website shows that he had about 100 tour dates before the pandemic, and tickets sold for $44-109. He’s probably made a good amount of money using his videos for earned media publicity and as his calling card.

by Anonymousreply 55July 13, 2020 11:24 AM

Love the apartment! Congratulations, Randy!

by Anonymousreply 56July 13, 2020 11:45 AM

His YouTube earnings monthly breakdown at R51 are $1.2K to $2K average a month. That's rather paltry. And he's obviously not "touring" now.

by Anonymousreply 57July 13, 2020 12:00 PM

R35 I havent but I would LOVE to, he is just my type, very hot indeed. Watched one of his vids, he is talented and he turned me on as well

R49 he is beautiful, if he thinks he is pretty its cos he is

R58=Randy R

by Anonymousreply 59July 13, 2020 3:53 PM

R55 is right - he has started doing a lot of shows (pre-pandemic). I can't imagine there are a lot of associated costs with that - one man show and all.

I don't watch him, but my partner does religiously. He loves him.

And, since he does parody, he's got a steady stream of new material. YouTube ads, merch, shows - he's probably pulling in $250K-$500K.

Also - I wonder how much he can write off the apartment rent if he also uses it as his recording studio?

by Anonymousreply 60July 13, 2020 4:02 PM

"YouTube ads, merch, shows - he's probably pulling in $250K-$500K."

That is a ludicrous figure, R60. There is no way this queen is pulling in that. The YouTube ads bring in at most an average of $2k a month as is documented above--sometimes as little as under $1k a month. His junk merch of T-shirts and mugs don't bring in that kind of revenue, either. And he hasn't done any shows in months.

by Anonymousreply 61July 13, 2020 4:07 PM

R59 I wish

by Anonymousreply 62July 13, 2020 4:17 PM

he's such a MARY!

by Anonymousreply 63July 13, 2020 4:21 PM

R61 - I'm not saying recently. First, that YouTube estimate page is off.

This single video had 6.4 million views. You can make roughly $2-$3 per CPM after YouTube's cut. That's a very low estimate.

So this single YouTube video has made him at least $19,000 at $3 CPM. Granted, that video is on the high side of views. But if he puts out 4 videos a month and each average around 1 million views, that's around $12K per month on videos alone.

Merch is bigger than you think for YouTubers. There are several that I follow where the merch sells out.

Of course he's hurting right now without being able to do shows - but he did start the 'gay show' circuit the last couple of years and has played a lot of dates. He did 29 shows in Sept-Nov of last year.

And he did some big theaters - he was at a 2400 seat theater in Chicago area last fall.

[quote]“I find that when I go to a new place, I throw everything away,” he said. “And this apartment was so much nicer than the other places I’ve lived in in New York that I wanted to start from scratch.”

I can relate. I'm moving into a newer, nicer place next month and I'm not taking any of my garbage with me. I haven't had nice, new stuff in 10+ years. It's time.

I've seen him perform live twice. A year ago (medium sized venue) and a few months before the pandemic broke out (huge venue). He has a great voice live and is just as funny and witty. LOVE him.

by Anonymousreply 67July 13, 2020 4:38 PM

R67 - how big of a venue and approximately how much were tickets?

by Anonymousreply 68July 13, 2020 4:39 PM

I appreciate his lyrical content, but haven't ever liked his voice. It's just far too nasal for me. But we've all really needed his material during this nightmare, and for that I'm thankful. So if he pulls in some YouTube money, good for him.

I would like to see him respond to non-celebrity followers on Twitter, though. Once in a while, anyway. I'm sure it must be amazing to have Betty Buckley & Bernadette Peters singing one's praises...but why not be kind to others with a sentence or two?

by Anonymousreply 69July 13, 2020 4:58 PM

So he’s filling the void left by Mark Russell. A PBS special must be in the works.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 70July 13, 2020 5:18 PM

Yeah, R70, I would say Randy R is the gay Mark Russell. And about as entertaining.

R64, the YouTube revenue list must be WAY off then. Why would it be so off?

July 2020 $ 1.29K February 2020 $ 1.4K January 2020 $ 1.52K December 2019 $ 896 November 2019 $ 2.01K October 2019 $ 2.62K September 2019 $ 2.47K August 2019 $ 2.83K July 2019 $ 2.51K June 2019 $ 1.06K May 2019 $ 1.53K April 2019 $ 1.15K March 2019 $ 2K February 2019 $ 2.16K January 2019 $ 2.92K December 2018 $ 2.01K November 2018 $ 1.35K October 2018 $ 1.82K September 2018 $ 2.29K August 2018 $ 2.93K July 2018 $ 2.62K June 2018 $ 884 May 2018 $ 743 April 2018 $ 647 March 2018 $ 906 February 2018 $ 909 January 2018 $ 1.03K December 2017 $ 889 November 2017 $ 1.36K October 2017 $ 1.69K August 2017 $ 484 May 2017 $ 761 April 2017 $ 158 March 2017 $ 781 February 2017 $ 336 January 2017 $ 1.06K November 2016 $ 726 October 2016 $ 690

by Anonymousreply 71July 13, 2020 5:24 PM

R64 - first, there's no listing for his April video that received over 6 million views.

In fact, it lists NOTHING from March through June videos - and he did quite a few during this time.

Second, his videos could have specific paid sponsors with a higher CPM instead of run of the mill placement. The estimates can't take that into consideration.

Lastly, he filled some big theaters last year - I did some checking. Apparently one theater of 1300 was sold out. If avg ticket was $50, that's $65K revenue and let's say he pulled in $20K of that himself after expenses, supporting staff, etc.

So yeah - if he did 29 shows in Sept-Nov and let's say he averaged $10K on the low end average from each show, that puts $290K in those 3 months alone.

by Anonymousreply 72July 13, 2020 5:31 PM

If he made $290k in 3 months then that would average $1.1 million a year. I doubt he pulled in $20K from a $65K revenue. That would be a third of all profits going to him. I think this is all inflated.

Regardless, I think he's about as funny as Garrison Keillor.

by Anonymousreply 73July 13, 2020 5:40 PM

R53 & R58 I find him cute as well. He's rather handsome in R51's link.

by Anonymousreply 74July 13, 2020 5:46 PM

R73 - most artists get 75-90% of the ticket price. I put him down getting less than a 1/3 of that. Why would you think he wouldn't get at least that much after expenses?

And I didn't say he did that many shows all year long. That was a particularly busy 3 months, but it's still worth acknowledging that it is a significant amount of income.

I couldn't see his apartment in the article because of paywall, but if he's renting a 2BR apartment that's pretty nice in Manhattan, he's going to have to show a significant income to cover it.

People are asking how he can afford it - I'm just crunching some numbers here and it looks pretty easy to show he did pretty well last year.

by Anonymousreply 75July 13, 2020 5:46 PM

"most artists get 75-90% of the ticket price."

I know some well known people who perform at Joe's Pub regularly, R75. They do not get that much of the ticket price. THAT is bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 76July 13, 2020 5:51 PM

R76 - Joe's Pub is 184 seats, not 1300 or 2400 seat venues that sold out.

So - go own with your own bullshit knowledge. There's no reason to think that these venues would be taking a majority of ticket revenue for him and not for other artists.

Chime in when your 'friends' sell out 1,000 plus seat venues. You do know that some artists (with much larger venues) actually get 100% or 105% of ticket revenue because of all the other revenue they bring in with their concerts? Not putting him into that category, but for him to pull in 1/4 to 1/3 in profit from a show is not unreasonable.

by Anonymousreply 77July 13, 2020 6:19 PM

Oh my sides, Randy--sorry, R77!

Okay, since you're an expert on how much every click generates on YouTube, and how much of the ticket price "artists" get in Broadway-size theaters, why don't you give us some actual numbers instead of your hypothetical figures? Otherwise you're pulling them out of your ass. But 75-90% of ticket prices going to the performers--I repeat: BULLSHIT!

And while you're at it, why don't you wash that sand out of your vadge?

by Anonymousreply 78July 13, 2020 6:27 PM

I love him. DL gays are the only people I've seen say anything negative about him. He's damn near Dolly Parton in real life. Even the deplorables leave him alone.

by Anonymousreply 79July 13, 2020 6:33 PM

R78 - Randy's living in the nice, big apartment and paying his bills and yo'ure not.

I work in digital advertising and with some YouTube channels. I know the prices .

Look up ticket breakdowns. It all depends, but those percentages aren't far off for selling out a 1000+ seat revenue. Point is - he's making a lot more money than you think. He would be a fool to play for a set fee of $5,000 at a $65K revenue making performance.

Stop being such a bitch - people are asking how he can afford it and my estimates - BEFORE taxes - show that he can easily afford that place, even if he makes half of my estimates.

by Anonymousreply 80July 13, 2020 6:41 PM

R75 Don’t bother. The person you are arguing with just wants to hate him and you’re not going to persuade him. The more research you do, the closer you come to pushing him toward calling you Poopyhead. Just hit ignore and move on. He’s a troll.

R79 Same. I hadn’t thought about it but I have read absolutely nothing except appreciation for his talent before. Even one of my dad’s Trumpy relatives in NC shared one of RR’s videos with a note that said something like, “OK y’all know I voted for Trump but this is just too funny not to share. This guy’s got talent!”

by Anonymousreply 81July 13, 2020 6:42 PM

Renting a 2 br/ba apt on the upper west side of Manhattan in a new construction will cost you between $7-10,000 a month. If you were able to see the pictures in the article you would see he's on a high floor so his monthly rent is probably closer to $10K a month. The renting office wouldn't let him sign a lease for that space if his annual income wasn't substantial.

by Anonymousreply 82July 13, 2020 6:45 PM

"[R78] - Randy's living in the nice, big apartment and paying his bills and yo'ure not."

Oh, but I am, hunty, R80, but thanks for your concern. I live in a highrise (a one-bedroom, mind you) with a balcony and a Hell's Kitchen view from the Hudson to Times Square. And I own it. I could give a shit about this Randy person you're so enamored with.

"The more research you do, the closer you come to pushing him toward calling you Poopyhead." And how old are YOU, R81? Ten?

by Anonymousreply 83July 13, 2020 6:46 PM

R81 - you're right - here he comes back again. But let me add - he also does Cameos for $150 a pop. He's made about $15,000 on that alone, if every one of them left a review (122 reviews).

He's pressed because with all his bitchiness he's been proven wrong. Move along R83 - and really, "hunty"? You're typing from your 8x10 bedroom in a walk-up that you share with 2 other roommates.

Randy's making a good deal of money. Deal with it. And learn to accept when you're wrong without wildly striking out against the world. You act like you're 12.

by Anonymousreply 84July 13, 2020 6:51 PM

More like between $5-7K/month, R82.

R84, I'm happy to be proven wrong--if ANYONE could come up with actual figures.

How far up on the West Side is this apartment? The view looks like Midtown.

by Anonymousreply 86July 13, 2020 6:54 PM

R83 is an angry person with a vendetta against Randy Rainbow for some reason. Some people are really kooky.

Right now, we're all holed up inside because of a pandemic that will stay in human history books forever. There's a second 1960s-level racial justice movement changing the country fundamentally. We're at real risk of losing our democratic republic to a demagogue who is doing the bidding of a foreign adversary and who looks like a Muppet pulled out of a dumpster.

And R83 is in a manic panic over how much money a showtunes-singing YouTuber makes because he wants HIS NYC apartment to be fancier than Randy Rainbow's!!!! ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!

It's an Oh, Dear of a whole new level.

by Anonymousreply 87July 13, 2020 6:55 PM

Or, R87, there are queens on this thread (and he's probably one of them) who are fangirls and adore him. I do not. I don't think he's funny. I do think he makes more money than is warranted, but so many people do. I merely find this ridiculous fawning over this mediocrity to be funnier than he is.

As for all those things you talk about--no shit. Please don't attempt to educate me on the world we'er living in because I live in it, too. So get off your high horse.

by Anonymousreply 88July 13, 2020 7:01 PM

R87 I'm not on a high horse. Just sittin' on the sidelines, munchin' my popcorn and watching your eyeballs bug out and smoke come out of your ears every time someone dares to say that the guy has talent and deserves his success.

by Anonymousreply 89July 13, 2020 7:08 PM

You're eating popcorn during all this, R89? Me, too!

It seems to me, the outraged rush to defend RR and testify to his fabulous wealth is the true source of hysteria.

LOL.

by Anonymousreply 90July 13, 2020 7:10 PM

It looks like a 'first time I got money' apartment.

I did the same 25 years ago, and some of those out-of-a-chain pieces stick around, until you get more money and bought better or get it made.

Now I'm on the way down, so the apartment is way cheap (and in a c-list city now) while the furniture is way overpriced for it. He'll get there too.

His furniture and lighting look to be bought from CB2. And those theatre posters--now THAT is something a 22-year-old gayling would have. Not a person of his age.

He better making the money if literally $84,000 to $120,000 a year is actually going to rent.

Why, especially in this depressed real estate post-pandemic market, would you waste all that money by renting and not buy?

R92 His obsession with theatre appears to be the thing that brought him the apartment and everything in it, and so the posters are probably perfectly appropriate, whether or not they're regarded as sophisticated.

Was his mother a fan of the group who sang "Denise" in 1963, Randy and the Rainbows?

R93 he may not have the money for a downpayment, or just wants the flexibility to ,move on a whim.

I don't understand the notion of trashing everything everytime you move. At all. I guess I've been way too poor all my life (I'm comfortably middle class, though.) ever to consider that an option. Besides being financially wasteful, it just seems so...wasteful. Very American to just leave all your shit so that you can buy all new shit every time you move a few blocks. I don't get that. It makes me like Randy a little bit less, to be honest. But I still like him overall and I think he's very talented.

Once you've made some real money, why waste time, money and energy moving your cheap shit? You don't have to drag your fucking Ikea garbage all over the place. People deserve to upgrade, it's really not a big deal.
