Those who walk dogs without a leash should be destroyed
For clarity - the owner, not the dog. Now this is the second time I've known someone who took their dog off leash "just for a minute to let her run." Surprise, this fantastically perfect dog, "she 100% always returns on command without fail" was hit by a car this morning. I'm so furious because I've argued with my friend about this before. I seriously don't get it. I really do not even want to be her friend anymore because this was completely preventable.
What are your thoughts? Worth the risk just to let a dog have some freedom? On a leash outside no matter what?

No dog parks in your area?

Any asshole who takes their dog out for a walk in public and doesn't use a leash should be harshly fined at the very least - it's one thing if your fenced-in yard, it's another out in public.

Don't move to rural America. You would think leashes had not been invented.

R1 - yes, believe it or not, numerous dog parks! This was just on a side road, where hardly any cars drive. The problem is - it's out in public. Cars DO drive by. Her stupid excuse was the dog never runs after squirrels, cats, other dogs, etc. but this time it was a large rabbit, which the dog had never encountered. She's never once seen her dog not listen to her commands - well, until now. I'm furious. I seriously hope she feels horrible for the rest of her life. The dog will likely have to be put to sleep. There is a fucking huge dog park less than a mile from our neighborhood.

I hate people who don’t leash their yappy little dogs. They must not care about their safety much.
I walk my dog on a leash and on multiple occasions I have encountered a little yapper that comes running out to the street barking and growling to get in my dogs face.
All it would take is one good nip from my German Shepard to end its life. I have come close to getting bit just to avoid having a tragedy since it’s not really the dogs fault. But the scratches do suck.

My favorite are those parents who allow Kaden to handle the leash of a dog twice his size and capable of mauling an old lady and there is nothing that child can do to intervene. But he likes to walk the dog. Isn't it adorbs!

R6 I wish Kaden's hand would get tangled in the leash, and his dog would drag him in front of a steamroller, with dog escaping unharmed. Adorbs!

As someone who owns a terrier, I would never dare to even ATTEMPT to walk my dog without a leash unless I was in my family's backyard where we have a fence. My dog is always on a leash if we are outside. I mean, I feel bad for your friend but someone really should tell her "we told you to put your dog on a leash".

heck, i take my dog for 1 hour drives a couple of times a week and he's on a leash and i hold on to it AND i only roll down his window half way, and we only drive around neighborhoods and to a nearby park..
freaks me out when i see people driving fast, the window completely rolled down and the dog is half way sticking out as it goes down the highway!
guess it's me and i'm just over protective...

or in dog parks, with people who let their dog run wild off a leash as they sit on their fat asses on of course their damn cellphone while their dog runs free, aggressively approaching and getting physical with other dogs and they could care less!

In Seattle right now, there's hardly any traffic in my neighborhood. I let her walk next to me on the sidewalk with her leash dragging behind her on our evening walks when maybe one or two cars slowly roll by at 15 mph.
But no, she's always on leash unless we're at the park.

I fucking hate the people who walk their dogs off leash on sidewalks when they let the dog get half a block ahead of them. you see an unleashed dog stroll by and have a heart attack running out thinking a dog got lose. tyen the owners laugh like you're the asshole.
my dog is heavily aggressive and would kill immediately any off leash dog that came bounding up.

My partner took our wonderful rescue dog out for runs in the morning at 5;30 in our suburban community. At one point, I realized it was without a leash and asked that a leash be used. Two days later I got the call to come pick them up, as our dog had been hit by a truck. Sans leash, of course. Whenever I think of that partner, now my ex, it's always, "YOU FUCKING KILLED MY DOG!"

Your dog is basically off leash if it's just dragging behind her.

The loose leashes are handy tools to dispatch the owner after stomping the loose dog.
Is that what you're trying to say, OP?
We don't do things like that here at the DL.
We respect animals.

OP: Sorry for this horrible time your little canine friend is experiencing; please keep us posted on his/her recovery.
As for the dog's owner, as we used to say on DL back in the day: "punch and delete."

This is not just a city and suburb thing. Every year people walk dogs in state parks and let them off the leash because they're in the woods and no one is around. The dog sees a squirrel or rabbit, goes crashing through the brush and gets lost. It's in unfamiliar surroundings and can't find its humans or anything for that matter, and as a house pet, it's has no idea how to hunt.

Your dog should be safely restrained with a safety harness in the back seat, not "on a leash" while you drive around.
See? There is always someone HOLIER and more correct than THOU.

I hate to be that person but, absolutely harness your dog properly in the car. I have 2, no, 3 incidents to tell you about.
1- not my dog, just someone I know - dog riding in car with windows down. dog hangs head out window, steps on electronic window controls. almost a dead dog.
2- honestly, the number of dogs fallen out windows, thrown out during a tiny bumper accident, jumped out when they see another dog is astonishing.
3- one day at work someone came running into the meeting i was in to pull me out. in the parking lot someone had left their dog in the car while they went to...? it was a pleasant day, 60 degrees, the dog was left in tye car with his leash on, tied (?) in the car with the windows open about 6 inches. 45 pound lab mix. either the leash got tangled when he jumped out the window or he was secured in the car and fell out the window.
I don't know, but, fuck, it was AWFUL. the dog wasn't touching anything, just HANGING there choking and drooling, back paws scratching helplessly against the car door trying to get purchase.
I cut the dog down (I had a martingale leash in my purse) and he lived but I have nightmares about that still.
harness your dog.

for those who want me to "harness my dog" i'm NOT driving on highways or freeways going 70 miles a hour! i'm talking driving around little quiet neighborhoods around my house, literally driving 10 miles a hour in them, i hold him on a l leash, the window is cracked wide enough just for him to stick his head out, so the chance of him falling out are zero, and other times he sits quietly right up against me as i drive....
so thanks for your ideas and concerns... but i'm been driving him around for nearly 13 years like this , a couple of times a week and so far so good..
