What type or design is this lamp? I've never seen anything like it?

I assume it's old, right? It reminds me of something hippie/granola people would make.

That is what is known as an ugly lamp.

by Anonymousreply 1July 7, 2020 6:15 AM

I like it.

by Anonymousreply 2July 7, 2020 6:16 AM

R2, you would.

by Anonymousreply 3July 7, 2020 6:18 AM

Just one look at that lamp makes children die and men's balls fall off!

by Anonymousreply 4July 7, 2020 6:19 AM

Spaghetti Factory Barbary Coast Bordello.

by Anonymousreply 5July 7, 2020 6:22 AM

With pie on top

by Anonymousreply 6July 7, 2020 6:23 AM

R5 lives in the SGV.

by Anonymousreply 7July 7, 2020 6:23 AM

That lamp is so ugly, it makes your grandfather's ballsac shrink.

by Anonymousreply 8July 7, 2020 6:24 AM

That lamp is so ugly, it makes Martha Stewart cry.

by Anonymousreply 9July 7, 2020 6:24 AM

That lamp is so ugly, it was rejected from Trumps' cabinet

by Anonymousreply 10July 7, 2020 6:25 AM

Technically, isn't it a lampshade?

by Anonymousreply 11July 7, 2020 6:25 AM

Boys boys boys!

let's not all get carried away!

by Anonymousreply 12July 7, 2020 6:26 AM

[quote] Spaghetti Factory Barbary Coast Bordello

There are spaghetti factories on the Barbary Coast? Bordellos I’m certain there are.

by Anonymousreply 13July 7, 2020 6:26 AM

It is a 1930s crescent moon lamp.

Art Noveau in the Eastern style. I like it.

by Anonymousreply 15July 7, 2020 6:28 AM

How much did you pay for that?

by Anonymousreply 16July 7, 2020 6:29 AM

It looks like a Ukrainian headdress.

by Anonymousreply 17July 7, 2020 6:29 AM

If you paid over 2 cents ...

by Anonymousreply 18July 7, 2020 6:30 AM

That looks like the hat I wore today.

by Anonymousreply 19July 7, 2020 6:30 AM

Call me crazy, but I think this one would make a nice accent piece on a simple sidebar or sofa table.

by Anonymousreply 20July 7, 2020 6:35 AM

Or perhaps a place to put the skulls of your dead enemies?

by Anonymousreply 21July 7, 2020 6:36 AM

R20 clearly has a telephone-dialing pencil and cigarette holder in matching colors.

by Anonymousreply 22July 7, 2020 6:38 AM

[quote] It is a 1930s crescent moon lamp.

The one at R14 looks like a Byzantine empress’ crown.

by Anonymousreply 23July 7, 2020 6:45 AM

OP’s and R20’s are rapturous.

by Anonymousreply 24July 7, 2020 6:56 AM

It’s a kokoshnik.

by Anonymousreply 25July 7, 2020 7:44 AM

Call me crazy, but I don't think it's ugly. Sure, it's quite outdated from an interior designer trend point of view, but it has a bit of whimsy I like. It would be great in some fortune teller's parlour.

by Anonymousreply 26July 7, 2020 8:12 AM

Sorry, parlor.

by Anonymousreply 27July 7, 2020 8:13 AM

It's a style called Bordello Baroque.

by Anonymousreply 28July 7, 2020 8:14 AM

Who cares what the trend is in home decor right now. It's your home. If you like it, ENJOY!

by Anonymousreply 29July 7, 2020 11:43 AM

I love it and plan on finding a similar one later today for my bedroom

by Anonymousreply 30July 7, 2020 12:03 PM

It's something a flapper would wear.

by Anonymousreply 31July 7, 2020 12:30 PM

Does flapper refer to vagina lips?

Weren’t flappers supposed to be slutty, rouging their knees and all.

by Anonymousreply 32July 7, 2020 12:46 PM

Gorgeous 1920s shade, and a very rare survival. If a lamp with this shade were kept in a bright room, the silk would fade and shred, Plus they would have to be dusted very carefully. And god forbid you had cats fascinated by the hanging bead tassels......

by Anonymousreply 33July 7, 2020 12:51 PM

That’s a classic, old school Tiffany Lamp, Rose.

by Anonymousreply 35July 7, 2020 1:09 PM

OP, here are some representations of what Tiffany Lamps looked like, BEFORE the Tiffany Lamp was redesigned to a stained glass lampshade.

The design is classic Victorian, and Tiffany’s original design was created via various fabrics, rather than stained glass, which is what most of us recognize as a classic, antique, Tiffany Lamp. .

While stained glass did eventually become the hallmark of Tiffany Lamps, it was not the only or even original concept of the lamp.

I don’t know if that’s a Tiffany, but it’s a Victorian design, for sure.

Gorgeous and a keeper!

R14 is right, thanks now I know what to search for online

Put r21 on "ignore " and half the thread disappears. JFC, r21. OCD much? Take your meds. Sheeeeesh!

Norma Desmond LOVED these lamps!

My grandmother wore one of those! She was Ukrainian.

by Anonymousreply 42July 7, 2020 4:52 PM

Maybe I feel sorry for this lamp. That is because I am stupid.

by Anonymousreply 43July 7, 2020 4:53 PM

My grandmother had one just like it, but it was red. She always kept it in the window. We were concerned because she always seemed to have friends over in the evening, and sometimes she would be so tired in the morning when we'd stop by on our way to school. She insisted she was fine and always would have little money gifts to give us. She promised my sister the lamp "when the time came."

And then she died.

But the lamp was destroyed in the fire before the found her bludgeoned body so my sister never got to enjoy the lamp.

by Anonymousreply 44July 7, 2020 4:58 PM

I'm wearing it for my next album cover: Majestic

If you're grandmother had that lamp in red in front of the living room window, she was a whore.

by Anonymousreply 46July 7, 2020 5:00 PM

That was the joke, r46. Meh.

by Anonymousreply 53August 25, 2020 7:15 PM

I think they'e beautiful and would also make great hats. Obviously, from some of the posts here I'm not alone.

Regarding The Old Spaghetti Factory, I recently (before Covid) went to an estate sale of an owner. It was in an eccentric home right on the Russian River and filled with the most crazy, wonderful, decaying vintage treasures. I went back for a second binge.

The rustic house looked like it was built for debauched parties. Large living area, wonderful outdoor area, huge deck, land that extended to the river, and tiny cabin-like bedrooms. Originally a summer cabin that had been extended over the years. Some wonderful stuff, a hand painted china cupboard painted with nautical signs and old sailing ships, bar ware, endless china and serve-ware, much of it chipped. You could sense the wild parties of the 70s - 80s that happened there. I bought a lot of piece for my space in an antique collective (yes, I'm one of those).

Old weird lamps sell well, I'm always looking for them.

I love it. It’s such an odd design. I’m not a designer but does this fall under the eclectic category?

by Anonymousreply 56August 26, 2020 1:51 AM

You have fucked up context; these lamps faded into the background until lit. The hazy warm glow bouncing off beads was forgiving to everyone.

by Anonymousreply 57August 26, 2020 2:28 AM

It's called the "Theodora, She-Bitch of Byzantium" lamp style.

by Anonymousreply 58August 26, 2020 2:49 AM

OP, I don't like it but if it's real then it could be worth a lot. I saw something like that on the Antiques Road Show - the one from the UK.

by Anonymousreply 59August 26, 2020 3:02 AM

These look like a very fancy Portuguese Man O’ War, carefully bedazzled.

by Anonymousreply 60August 26, 2020 3:02 AM

Originally known as “My Fallopiana” these lamps celebrated the can-do spirit of Nebraskan reproductive organs.

by Anonymousreply 61August 26, 2020 4:34 AM

Anna Madrigal had one in her home at 28 Barbary Lane.

by Anonymousreply 62August 26, 2020 4:47 AM

I saw Muriel wearing a hat just like that Sunday.

by Anonymousreply 63August 26, 2020 4:59 AM

Love it. As an accent piece its fabulous. Not everything has to be sleek and modern. Besides, it reminds me of an old grande dame.

lt look like something Gloria Swanson would have worn in a scandalous pre-code film that took its design hints from Alphonse Mucha posters.

by Anonymousreply 70November 17, 2020 6:53 PM

I like it, especially R20, which is apparently called Celadon Chinoiserie Moon Lamp.

by Anonymousreply 71November 17, 2020 7:08 PM

It’s a headdress from one of those North Korean million member flash mob dance numbers. The ones they routinely stage for Dear Leader just before they wheel the latest nuke through the square. And it’s FABulous!

by Anonymousreply 72November 17, 2020 7:29 PM

I think it came from Padme's wardrobe
