A Place to Call Home

So much better than Downtown Abbey

by Anonymousreply 59January 12, 2021 1:34 PM

I am in year 4 of it. I actually am too embarrassed to tell people I watch it.

by Anonymousreply 1July 4, 2020 2:12 AM

Watched some, but not all of it. What struck me as weird was Sarah's wanting to raise her son with George Bligh as a Jew, even though she herself only converted to Judaism for her first husband. Also Carolyn's casual interaction with Anna, before it's revealed that she is Anna's real mother. Maybe the writers hadn't thought of that development early on.

It's definitely no Downton Abbey.

by Anonymousreply 2July 4, 2020 11:34 PM

I assumed all along that James Bligh would grow and change from the weakling who was his grandmother's little bitch to a man strong enough to give love to the simple loyal prole Harry. Smarmy but sigh-worthy. Then I snuck a look to the end to see who ended up with whom and I realized, no this whole thing was some kind of revenge porn on people like James Bligh.

by Anonymousreply 3July 8, 2020 5:07 AM

Anyone watching the new soap Between Two Worlds from the same creators?

Caroline is in it, as is the gorgeous hunky sexy perfect stud Harry, though i suspect he plays straight in thus one....

by Anonymousreply 4July 8, 2020 5:13 AM

I love A Place to Call Home. I can't wait for the next season.

by Anonymousreply 5July 8, 2020 5:36 AM

I was so glad that Dr Fox ended up with Harry

by Anonymousreply 6July 8, 2020 5:39 AM

Interesting that the Ozzies all called him Mr. Fox instead of Dr. Fox. Why is that, I wonder.

by Anonymousreply 7July 8, 2020 6:25 AM

Harry had the best line though: "Our sort have enough enemies without turning on each other." I wish sometimes more dataloungers understood that.

by Anonymousreply 8July 8, 2020 6:25 AM

I wasn't that surprised James ended up dying of AIDs

by Anonymousreply 9July 8, 2020 11:51 AM

I usually refer to him as Dr Foxxy

by Anonymousreply 10July 8, 2020 12:09 PM

While James was very pretty, he was out f his league with Henry (or Harry). I would have drank Henry’s bath water.

by Anonymousreply 11July 16, 2020 11:43 AM

I personally always found James the most attractive then Harry. Harry had a better body but I found James's face way more attractive

by Anonymousreply 12July 16, 2020 2:03 PM

I had to scroll past the above (and possible spoilers) to share that I am binge-watching this newly discovered series.

"A Place To Call Home" is a great diversion from the horrors of summer 2020, and serves up good old fashioned soap shenanigans with a heaping helping of something for everyone! I love it!

by Anonymousreply 13August 10, 2020 11:14 PM

Mary Christmas was my favorite character.

by Anonymousreply 14August 10, 2020 11:22 PM

Just finished the series. Loved it.. Henry got the better man in Harry, and I’m sure their lives together were/are happy. There is a story to be told (Henry and Harry are together for 58 years - and hopefully counting), and I hope there is a movie or a sequel... the series spent over 2 years on the story of James and Henry,,,, and just a few weeks on Henry and Harry...

by Anonymousreply 15August 18, 2020 12:42 AM

r15, that's because James was a main character, Harry was not.

Am I the only one who totally HATES that Nazi bitch Regina, and not in a love to hate way either.

I want Sarah to punch her right in the throat every time she insults her.

by Anonymousreply 16August 18, 2020 12:48 AM

R16. R15 here.

Regina was about the best villain I’ve ever seen portrayed. I fucking hated her.. but in the end.. she made amends as best she could. And I understand your point about James.. It would have been nice however to know when Henry and Harry first slept together (I suspect it was after the party). I wrote off James when he sent a fucking letter with Olivia to end it with James... he didn’t have the guts to call Henry after telling him they were together forever when Henry disclosed being blackmailed. And William.. we got a good look at him as James was stroking his hair. James traded down... idiot

by Anonymousreply 17August 18, 2020 1:45 AM

Much better than DOWNTON. Half the characters on that show are majorly annoying.

HOME just has a few duds (the youngest daughter and her Italian husband.)

by Anonymousreply 18August 18, 2020 3:17 AM

[quote]R17 Regina was about the best villain I’ve ever seen portrayed. I fucking hated her.. but in the end.. she made amends as best she could.

Regina is gorgeous (always a plus) and she’s the best dressed member of the cast. And her motivation is believable - she’s not just wrecking havoc for kicks.

The one I want to see stomped is that fusty, uptight matriarch. I’d like to see her come to from a blackout in a cheap Havana motel room!

Anybody watching the latest new soap from the creators of APTCH? I think it's called Between Two Worlds?

Both Harry and Caroline are in this soap. But all i care about are more shirtless scenes from Harry's actor.

by Anonymousreply 20August 18, 2020 8:00 AM

Both A Place To Call Home and Between Two Worlds are great. I was wondering why Hermione Norris on BTW looked so familiar, so I checked her on IMDB and she was in a rather splendid British show which was recommended to me at DL, Kingdom starring Stephen Fry.

Didn't David Berry, James, leave the show in later seasons of APTCH to star in Starz' Outlander playing another gay character?

by Anonymousreply 21August 18, 2020 10:11 AM

Regarding Between Two Worlds. That set of the drive-in entrance of the luxury penthouse is out of this world.

by Anonymousreply 22August 18, 2020 10:15 AM

[quote]Interesting that the Ozzies all called him Mr. Fox instead of Dr. Fox. Why is that, I wonder.

See this explanation, R7

IMO, Regina could have been fun if they had just kept her as the bitchy villainess who hated Sarah for her own reasons, but they had to go and make her a Nazi sympathizer and a serious anti-Semite, always calling Regina "the jew" and trying to make her life miserable, that she lost all rooting power for me.

I draw the line at rooting for Nazis and Nazi sympathizers.

by Anonymousreply 24August 19, 2020 12:41 AM

that is "always calling Sarah "the jew" and trying to make her life miserable"

this place really needs an edit button.

by Anonymousreply 25August 19, 2020 12:42 AM

I haven't seen this yet, but keep meaning to because Benjamin Winspear (husband of the leading lady) is in a bit part. He played the sexiest Faust I have ever seen onstage.

by Anonymousreply 26August 19, 2020 6:10 PM

R7, it was (and still is, to hear my cousins talk) usual to call medical professionals "Mr." instead of the American "Dr."

by Anonymousreply 27August 19, 2020 6:36 PM

R26, Winspear plays a lot more than a bit part. He appears in a number of episodes in the second and third season, and to say more will be a spoiler.

by Anonymousreply 28August 31, 2020 3:21 PM

I loved this soap, with the exception of the insufferable and self righteous Marta Dusseldorf (Sarah). Hated the fuck out of the character and the actress. In the end, Elizabeth Bligh was my favorite, she really comes around.

by Anonymousreply 29August 31, 2020 4:17 PM

R15: Here's hoping we're granted our wishes for an "A Place To Call Home" feature film sequel.

by Anonymousreply 30August 31, 2020 4:19 PM

I want to see Harry bed Henry... a bunch!!!!..

by Anonymousreply 31September 1, 2020 12:51 AM

I love that there's a thread on this series.

I'm totally addicted to it and have been the the beginning when pretty boy James attempted to jump overboard, and I immediately thought "tortured '50s closet case."

The show has been airing on one of the local PBS stations, where it's early in season 3.

What I especially like about it is how so many of the story lines revolve around the idea of secrets and hiding - who they are, what they've done, how they feel and what they want.

Wasn’t “Downtown Abbey” like PBS’ version of what “Mamma Mia” was to theatre?

by Anonymousreply 33September 1, 2020 1:51 AM

Loving this series. Perfect escape. I’m averaging three eps a night. Mid-season 3 now.

by Anonymousreply 34September 3, 2020 9:05 PM

This show had some of the worst acting ever. George was terrible.

by Anonymousreply 35September 3, 2020 9:21 PM

One of my favorite series.

by Anonymousreply 36September 3, 2020 9:53 PM

Loved the first season.

Watched the second season.

Gave up on the third season.

by Anonymousreply 37September 3, 2020 9:55 PM

"The dago experience is en vogue."

by Anonymousreply 38September 3, 2020 11:08 PM

I had no idea there was a sequel. Where are you guys watching Between Two Worlds?

by Anonymousreply 39September 3, 2020 11:43 PM

R37. You give up in season 3 before James and Henry sleep together? Season 4 is a lot of them as a couple. Season 6 is really good.

by Anonymousreply 40September 4, 2020 12:45 AM

Streaming anywhere?

by Anonymousreply 41September 4, 2020 12:51 AM

It is available on the Acorn TV streaming service. Full disclosure, Acorn streams at 480i, not 1080i, so the quality is less than on PBS stations that are airing it. Given that there are six seasons of A Place to Call Home, it might be worth buying a used set of DVDs on Ebay to be able to better appreciate the great production design in the show. I bought a set for $25.

by Anonymousreply 42September 4, 2020 1:23 AM

I watch it on Acorn through Amazon. The production design looks good and the image is not noticably lesser than other streaming services.

by Anonymousreply 43September 4, 2020 1:34 AM

Found this on Reddit about the Acorn streaming quality.

I am surprized by that R44. A lot of stuff on Amazon Prime have poor quality transfer, but the streaming channels rarely do---and that is usually for older programs.

I watch a fair amount of Acorn through Amazon, and have not noticed any problem.

Maybe if you subscribe to Acorn on a different platform.....? Perhaps the problem is with the platform....?

by Anonymousreply 45September 4, 2020 11:44 AM

R4 - What network is airing Between Two Worlds.

Binged watch A Place to Call Home over a long five day weekend and love it.

I am a sucker for hysterical costume dramas.

by Anonymousreply 46September 4, 2020 11:48 AM

R45 - I subscribe to AcornTV through Comcast Xfinity and have not had a problem. Quality of transmission is superior to Amazon Prime or Netflix via WiFi streaming.

by Anonymousreply 47September 4, 2020 11:50 AM

A Place to Call Home is not even close to being as excellent as Downton Abbey.

by Anonymousreply 48September 4, 2020 11:55 AM

A Place To Call Home was a lot gayer, and campier (Regina as the mustache twirling villain), than Downton Abbey. Of course when it comes to production value and zingers DA beats APTCH by miles.

by Anonymousreply 49September 4, 2020 12:45 PM

Between Two Worlds is not a sequel to A Place To Call Home and one has nothing to do with the other R46.

R50 - What content provider is Between Two Worlds on?

by Anonymousreply 51September 4, 2020 5:05 PM

It's funny to see half the cast pop up on Wentworth.

by Anonymousreply 52September 4, 2020 5:29 PM

I just Googled it for you R51, all I could find in the US is that you can rent it on Amazon, but usually they wind up on Acorn (which is an add on channel you can get on Amazon Prime for like $5/month).

by Anonymousreply 53September 4, 2020 8:37 PM

In Season 6, Elizabeth decides to steal Aunt Bea's look.

Why?

by Anonymousreply 54September 6, 2020 11:27 PM

R54, Aunt Bea came after 1959,, Elizabeth got there first!

by Anonymousreply 55September 12, 2020 7:12 PM

What's Craig Hall who played Duncan story?

by Anonymousreply 56October 26, 2020 11:29 AM

Married to the actress who played his wife on the show. Both have strong Kiwi accents in real life

by Anonymousreply 57October 27, 2020 2:57 PM

Awww they were a cute couple on the show (other than the angst).

by Anonymousreply 58October 27, 2020 4:08 PM

It was soapy, fun, predictable, comfort food TV! Regina should be in the Villain Hall of Fame.

But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a larger group of pretty boys all in one TV show. interchangeable mannequins that were certainly not cast for their acting talents. (Despite them all being basically plastic, Harry’s body was really killer.)

I suspect the eye candy was part of its success. Or the point. And they sure ARE pretty, if that’s your thing.

For me, Jack was the hottest and is who I craved (check out Craig Hall shirtless or in a beard). And maybe even Daddy Roy Briggs.

But it has something and someone for everyone.
