Queerty: "White gay bear privilege is a thing and it needs to end"

A new article posted to the bear blog Bearworldmag.com is calling out racism within the gay bear community.

In a wake up call titled “White Bears, it’s time for you to be uncomfortable,” writer Kyle Jackson says white gay bears, feeling like outsiders in a community that often prizes six packs above everything else, have successfully cultivated spaces for themselves where they feel welcome, sexy, and celebrated. It can be seen in bear circuit parties, bear weekends, and bear Facebook groups.

But there’s a sad irony happening not too far below the surface. Because while they are proudly taking ownership of their own “outsider” status within the larger gay community, white gay bears often tend to shut out anyone who doesn’t look like them–i.e. bears of color.

[quote] . No one is trying to destroy your fun, but you literally have people telling you that they feel excluded from your events. People are literally telling you that they feel mistreated and underrepresented.

One more extraneous “literally” and fun time is over!

by Anonymousreply 1July 2, 2020 4:31 PM

[quote] bear weekends

Are those also known as orgies?

by Anonymousreply 2July 2, 2020 4:34 PM

In fairness you never see black, brown and polar bears mixing in the wild either.

by Anonymousreply 3July 2, 2020 4:40 PM

Girls, GIRLS! Stop fighting! You're all Fat, ok?

by Anonymousreply 4July 2, 2020 4:41 PM

[quote] White Bears wonder why it’s hard to get People of Color to show up at your events, or be models on your event posters. It seems like you want People of Color to represent your events without actually making an attempt to include them.

The white bears make efforts to get POC to come to events (labeled “your” events) and try to put POC on posters for the events, but “actually” make no attempt to include POC?

Literally?

by Anonymousreply 5July 2, 2020 4:41 PM

Queerty is a thing?

by Anonymousreply 6July 2, 2020 4:43 PM

I’m looking forward to the future articles...

Next Month:

‘White Twunk Insatiable BDSM Pass-Around parTy Fisting Bottom privilege is a thing and it needs to end!’

by Anonymousreply 7July 2, 2020 4:50 PM

Oh, good grief.

Another person whining about not being able to get laid by those he's attracted to......next it will be all the fatties demanding that muscle mary privilege is LITERAL VIOLENCE!!!

by Anonymousreply 8July 2, 2020 4:55 PM

R8 exactly it’s like Ts or Blks who scream about how straights or whitey won’t fuck them but they won’t fuck others like themselves...

by Anonymousreply 9July 2, 2020 5:01 PM

I'm crying as I type this...

...because I'm laughing so hard.

by Anonymousreply 10July 2, 2020 5:03 PM

Where does this jabroni live? In NYC POC are well represented at bear events. Maybe GYM bar or Ty's skew whiter but Rockbar is very diverse.

by Anonymousreply 11July 2, 2020 5:05 PM

Just look at all this privilege! ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR PRIVILEGE!!!

It’s not the same. Discrimination on the basis of race is part of a pattern that is a legitimate issue. Discrimination on the basis of body type is not. However, sexual attraction and social comfort are not things that can be legislated. I believe that these barriers will come down naturally when other, more pressing problems (economic and political discrimination) are addressed.

by Anonymousreply 13July 2, 2020 5:07 PM

r12 I apologise for nothing.

Where do they tend? The ice cream sundae bar?

by Anonymousreply 16July 2, 2020 5:24 PM

White bears think they're the shit until a hot blatino bear walks in the room. Everyone wants a sexy blatino husbear!

by Anonymousreply 17July 2, 2020 6:56 PM

Queerty= Scolds.

by Anonymousreply 18July 2, 2020 7:00 PM

R17 We need to have a conversation about the privilege of the sexy blatino husbear.

by Anonymousreply 19July 2, 2020 7:05 PM

It's like there are no problems out there for them to report on. Remember when journalism was an actual thing?

by Anonymousreply 20July 2, 2020 7:07 PM

Funny, most of the bears I first met were black.

by Anonymousreply 21July 2, 2020 7:09 PM

When I was a bear I tricked with anyone. Did not then nor now do I care about skin color in fact I find the range of skin color to be awesome. It's funny we know dogs are descended from wolves and yet look at the variety. Humans too - we get the same body plan but coloration changes. All based upon ancestry.

by Anonymousreply 22July 2, 2020 7:12 PM

[quote]Discrimination on the basis of race is part of a pattern that is a legitimate issue. Discrimination on the basis of body type is not.

Would you please explain this? How is racial discrimination any different from body type discrimination nation? Discrimination is discrimination.

by Anonymousreply 23July 2, 2020 7:18 PM

Well, r23, one type of discrimination impacts r13, and therefore is bad; the other doesn't, so it doesn't have to ever be addressed.

by Anonymousreply 24July 2, 2020 7:21 PM

The privilege of getting free social service and Welfare checks from the day you were born is a thing. Can we have a conversation about that? No?

by Anonymousreply 25July 2, 2020 7:21 PM

Such a privilege to be born poor!

by Anonymousreply 26July 2, 2020 7:24 PM

Actually, r24, I’m an overweight white guy. I understand the difference between being my being considered undesirable because I haven’t stayed in shape, and someone else’s being denied equal justice because of their skin color.

by Anonymousreply 27July 2, 2020 7:29 PM

That Aaron guy in the comments reminds me of a few Dataloungers.

He's probably a skinny white twink who 'identifies as queer'.

by Anonymousreply 28July 2, 2020 7:31 PM

Oh. Okay.

by Anonymousreply 29July 2, 2020 7:39 PM

Imagine being paid by Queerty to "write" an article that is 95% Instagram posts and quotes from an article someone else wrote.

by Anonymousreply 30July 2, 2020 7:46 PM

That'd actually be a nice side gig, r30 lol.

by Anonymousreply 31July 2, 2020 7:49 PM

R30 I suspect they are being "paid" with exposure and maybe a spare advance copy or two of some Alok Vaid-Menon.

by Anonymousreply 32July 2, 2020 7:53 PM

r24: LOL!

by Anonymousreply 33July 2, 2020 7:54 PM

R32 next they'll be working at them magazine, writing articles on how oppressed nonbinaries are!

by Anonymousreply 34July 2, 2020 8:07 PM

Wow, they must be running low on issues to be angry about over at Queerty.

by Anonymousreply 35July 2, 2020 8:48 PM

They get clicks for these bait jobs but they do not earn longtime reader support for them. In fact, I am less likely to subscribe or return to a journal that uses such obvious clickbait.

by Anonymousreply 36July 2, 2020 8:51 PM

[post redacted because linking to dailymail.co.uk clearly indicates that the poster is either a troll or an idiot (probably both, honestly.) Our advice is that you just ignore this poster but whatever you do, don't click on any link to this putrid rag.]

The JK Rowling thing was about trans, not race, issues. White guilt has nothing to do withit.

by Anonymousreply 39July 2, 2020 9:59 PM

Quite big tits.

by Anonymousreply 40July 2, 2020 10:03 PM

Someone started a thread to understand what Virtue Signaling means. I really hope he sees r37.

by Anonymousreply 41July 2, 2020 10:10 PM

I have a legitimate question here. Are you supposed to have sex with people you don't find attractive? I understand not going out of your way to be cruel to someone who hits on you, but should people be shamed into having sex with someone they feel no sexual spark with because, if you turn them down, you'll be considered a bigot or less open minded? Isn't someone demanding that you find them attractive and sex sex with them sort of like rape?

I've been attracted to all sorts of types in my life regardless of body type, race, etc. but not everyone is going to do it for me just like I know I'm not going to do it for everyone either. I see nothing wrong with this.

by Anonymousreply 42July 2, 2020 10:25 PM

According to some people, if you are a white man who prefers to have sex with other white men then you are racist.

by Anonymousreply 43July 2, 2020 10:27 PM

Black gay men have far higher rates of HIV than gay men of other races. Things will get better in the future - data from the UK shows a sharp drop of HIV infections among gay men in the few years since PrEP has been in circulation. But until then, I think it's for the good of everyone to keep communities separated for the moment being.

by Anonymousreply 44July 2, 2020 10:28 PM

[quote] I have a legitimate question here. Are you supposed to have sex with people you don't find attractive?

No. You’re supposed to recognize that something inside of you makes you categorically uninterested in certain kinds of men and rather than simply dismissing that something as “taste” or “affinity for a type,” at least think about the possibility that you are experiencing some form of racism.

Experiencing that kind of racism doesn’t make you a bad person. It probably dates back to your childhood. But accepting that you have a little racism in you may make you more aware of how racism permeates our society.

by Anonymousreply 45July 2, 2020 10:38 PM

But what if you have had sex with many black or different bodied men in your life? What if you're just not into this particular guy? This is where it gets messy for me.

by Anonymousreply 46July 2, 2020 11:09 PM

R46 Don't get messy! Just ignore the scolds telling you how to live your life. I do.

by Anonymousreply 47July 2, 2020 11:11 PM

[quote]ou’re supposed to recognize that something inside of you makes you categorically uninterested in certain kinds of men and rather than simply dismissing that something as “taste” or “affinity for a type,” at least think about the possibility that you are experiencing some form of racism.

Jesus Fucking Christ, talk about "White guilt!"

by Anonymousreply 48July 3, 2020 12:04 AM

Its a normal question. A thoughtful person asks himself at some point why he's attracted to some, not others.

by Anonymousreply 49July 3, 2020 12:13 AM

People are just looking to be offended at this point.

by Anonymousreply 50July 3, 2020 12:15 AM

Is that an FTM at R12?

by Anonymousreply 51July 3, 2020 12:29 AM

Bears in general have always been cliquish. I'm sure it was much earlier, but I remember the bear movement starting in the early 2000's where it went from inclusion of "people of size" to exclusion of others. I went to a bear pool party as a twink and thought I was going to be the belle of the ball. While there bears that did want to fuck, I felt like there was a lot of attitude. There is kind homogeny in their dress, style, etc. The BOC's (bears of color) always seemed a little out of place, especially the Asian bears.

by Anonymousreply 52July 3, 2020 5:56 AM

R45 Sexual preference has nothing to do with racism. As a very young child I can remember finding certain men good looking and having crushes. This was not influenced by my parents or any racism.

Your comments guilting people here are really no different than people who argue that being gay is a choice or that we should be ok with accepting genitalia that we are not attracted to because if not you’re transphobic. My attraction is no ones business and not subject to criticism.

It’s a slippery slope. Sex is deeply personal and nobody should feel coerced into sex they don’t want.

Religious conservatives also espouse similar views based on scripture , they coerce women to submit to their husbands even when they don’t want to have sex because it’s the husbands right.

by Anonymousreply 53July 3, 2020 1:22 PM

Endtimes!!! The Golden Corral Buffets are closed!!! DXL Big and Tall Stores are closed! My life is meaningless!

by Anonymousreply 54July 3, 2020 1:41 PM

If I'm attracted to you and you aren't to me, denying me sex is as bad as racism! We need to make this a thing. Shame others who don't think you are attractive. Let's ride this guilt for some good cock.

by Anonymousreply 55July 3, 2020 3:38 PM

R52, why did you think you would be the belle of the ball? Bears are at Bear events to meet other bears, not twinks with the attitude that bears should feel lucky to have them. That attitude is a major turn off.

by Anonymousreply 56July 3, 2020 7:39 PM

R56 - Fair enough. I think that was my attitude as you described, but I guess my logic are there are some types that are just universally appealing to everyone. I also thought at the time that bears were for inclusivity. There is a pack need I think in the gay community where we can't just be gay, but we need to subscribe to the subreddit of gay life.

by Anonymousreply 57July 3, 2020 7:48 PM

I didn't know that being a white gay bear meant that you have more employment opportunities.

by Anonymousreply 58July 3, 2020 8:02 PM

[quote] I went to a bear pool party as a twink and thought I was going to be the belle of the ball.

Unfortunately, it was immediately apparent to everyone there you were not just a twink but also a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 59July 4, 2020 12:42 AM

A gorgeous hot white twink or twunk with a big cock trumps a hot white bear 90% of the time if you were to conduct a taste test.

by Anonymousreply 60July 4, 2020 6:46 AM

Having an opinion about whom other people have sex or associate with is fucking juvenile, and should not be tolerated.

Back in my youth we had a popular phrase, "Mind your own fucking business!"

by Anonymousreply 61July 4, 2020 6:54 AM

Bears are gross fatties.
