Most Overrated Gay Icon

Sometime gays latch onto somebody early in their career, and then, even though the celeb disappoints, they won't let go. It's not like gays as a group are known for having any unhealthy emotional issues vis-à-vis female celebrities, or anything.

Anyway, which of these is the most overrated. Justify your answers in the comments.

by Anonymousreply 91July 1, 2020 11:08 AM

Nancy Culp?! One of these things is not like the others...

by Anonymousreply 1June 29, 2020 11:00 PM

R1, I put that in for our lesbian friends.

by Anonymousreply 2June 29, 2020 11:00 PM

Lady Gaga owns this thread. The most patronizing and desperate of all the women listed. That whole "be yourself" BS was ultimately patronizing.

by Anonymousreply 3June 29, 2020 11:05 PM

Lady Gag is the Trump of Pop.

And quite reductive. Look it up!

Taylor Swift is NOT a gay icon.

Bey is the most overrated. She’s had like, 3 memorable singles: Single Ladies, Crazy in Love, and Sweet Dreams. Telephone is with Gaga but I guess I’ll be charitable and include it.

People voting for Madonna are insane.

by Anonymousreply 5June 29, 2020 11:06 PM

Madonna can’t sing or act. She can dance a little. She should have been a pole dancer.

by Anonymousreply 6June 29, 2020 11:08 PM

Madonna actually did speak out for gays at a time when people thought it was disgusting to associate with them and she was very outspoken on AIDS. Lady Gaga patronized to gays at a time when it was way easier to jump on a trend and act like you supported it all along.

by Anonymousreply 7June 29, 2020 11:08 PM

Gaga by far. Goodness, she is a trainwreck.

by Anonymousreply 8June 29, 2020 11:08 PM

My elder gay children I am so touched by this !!!! My word tour resumes in 2021 !!! I am working on my entrance montage as we speak !!! Remember when you are looking at me I am looking at you !!! Much love !!!

by Anonymousreply 9June 29, 2020 11:09 PM

I understand why people find her annoying, but I think Lady Gaga is the only person on this list whose talents are more underrated than they are overrated. She can legitimately sing beautifully and often makes interesting artistic choices not to do so, and although I thought A Star Is Born was a sappy, Lifetime-caliber movie, her performance was the best part of it. There’s a ton of artifice in her art but she is a talented woman. She also was in my opinion brilliant to respond to a music industry that told her she is too ugly to be a star by taking off her pants and hot gluing muppets to her head so that people couldn’t look away, and then waiting a couple of years before showing off her real performative talents after she was a household name.

Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry started dressing like anime characters after Gaga made it normal, and then Gaga stopped doing it and instead just sang and acted impressively.

I agree with R5. I think Beyonce is the most overrated but Swift doesn't even belong the list. Gaga ushered in a new era of Euro style dance pop and made 70s fashion popular again so she's deserving.

by Anonymousreply 11June 29, 2020 11:11 PM

This is about being overrated as a gay icon, not their talent. I don't deny her talent--she's just the biggest tryhard and phony of all the women listed. The other women, even Taylor, all come off as more authentic than her. Gaga stopped the whole weird-schtick long after the public gave up on it. Hence ArtPop being a flop.

by Anonymousreply 12June 29, 2020 11:11 PM

You left off Britney Spears. Every gay guy I know loves her and I've never understood why.

by Anonymousreply 13June 29, 2020 11:12 PM

Overrated: Britney/Gaga Underrated: Bjork

by Anonymousreply 14June 29, 2020 11:12 PM

the worst thing about Beyonce are her fans.

by Anonymousreply 15June 29, 2020 11:12 PM

Britney Spears is vacant enough that any group, whether it be gays, robots, trans, etc. can claim her as a champion of theirs. It's not like she'll object. She's too drugged up to do that.

by Anonymousreply 16June 29, 2020 11:13 PM

What are we, chopped liver? There are more drag queen impersonations of us than all the other people on the list combined.

by Anonymousreply 17June 29, 2020 11:13 PM

You bitches need to start including Tori Amos on these lists.

by Anonymousreply 18June 29, 2020 11:13 PM

Wait, how is Michelle Obama a “gay icon”?!

by Anonymousreply 19June 29, 2020 11:13 PM

Most Deserving: STEVIE NICKS.

R19 She wore a dress designed by a gay guy once. Duh.

by Anonymousreply 21June 29, 2020 11:14 PM

R19, I put Michelle Obama there so Beyonce wouldn't be the only black person.

by Anonymousreply 22June 29, 2020 11:15 PM

R20, Stevie Nicks is NOT overrated!

by Anonymousreply 23June 29, 2020 11:16 PM

Beyoncé is NOT overrated as a gay icon. People aren’t reading the thread right. She has not used us for her career like that rancid Gaga and has actually shown sincerity as an ally.

by Anonymousreply 24June 29, 2020 11:16 PM

R23 Stevie Nicks has the voice of a thousand angels!

by Anonymousreply 25June 29, 2020 11:17 PM

R23, I meant Stevie was MOST DESERVING of being a Gay Icon, sorry!

by Anonymousreply 31June 29, 2020 11:22 PM

Gaga had some great jams and brought us all a party joy and aesthetic that was sorely needed during and after the Bush years.

Yes, she was bandwagony with our rights and came off as very trite. But transparent or no, she DID stand up. When has Britney, Christina, Gwen Stefani, etc EVER?

Most importantly, she brought us SHANNON Gaga, one of my favorite personalities from the aughts.

R23, too late. I have already reported you to the gay police. They will be over to your house soon to confiscate your tasteful throw pillows, all-male porn, miniature spoon collection, and caftans.

by Anonymousreply 33June 29, 2020 11:24 PM

Finally! An award Beyonce deserves.

by Anonymousreply 34June 29, 2020 11:24 PM

Why are they all females ?

by Anonymousreply 35June 29, 2020 11:25 PM

R35, we'll do Roddy McDowell and Freddy Mercury for you, tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 36June 29, 2020 11:27 PM

OP, Nancy Kulp and Michelle Obama don’t belong in the poll. Nancy Kulp was a wonderful character actress and she’s a lesbian icon, as well.

Michelle Obama is not an entertainer; she’s universally loved, admired and respected for her humanitarianism. (Aside from being a former excellent First Lady.)

by Anonymousreply 37June 29, 2020 11:28 PM

R37, don't you find it ironic as you drool and emote over Michelle Obama in the same reply as you claim she is not a gay icon?

by Anonymousreply 38June 29, 2020 11:30 PM

No Liza Minnelli? Please report to the courtesy desk and turn in your gay card.

by Anonymousreply 39June 29, 2020 11:32 PM

Not one is gay. That’s so interesting...Rosie O’Donnell, Ellen (even with her baggage), K.D. Lang, Oscar Wilde, James Dean, Gore Vidal, Elton John, RuPaul...I’d consider all of them gay idols. I’d throw in Cary Grant as well and Brando since he was openly bi.

by Anonymousreply 40June 29, 2020 11:32 PM

The pandering straight white guys like Nick Jonas (but oh god do I want him in my bed!)

by Anonymousreply 41June 29, 2020 11:35 PM

Barbra should be voted as most overrated; however, she should be on the list.

by Anonymousreply 42June 29, 2020 11:47 PM

^^should NOT be!! Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 43June 29, 2020 11:47 PM

Lady Trump is the worst.

by Anonymousreply 44June 30, 2020 12:08 AM

R37, I'm not sure either one of those two are actually women.

by Anonymousreply 45June 30, 2020 5:24 PM

Not overrated by a long shot, but Annie Lennox should be included as a gay icon.

by Anonymousreply 46June 30, 2020 6:05 PM

R20=Thorgy Thor

by Anonymousreply 47June 30, 2020 6:10 PM

Where’s Angela Lansbury ?

by Anonymousreply 48June 30, 2020 10:38 PM

R48, she is solving murders whilst on vacation. What are you doing with your summer?

by Anonymousreply 49July 1, 2020 12:16 AM

Beyonce couldn't give a flying fuck if all gay men were executed. Shes one of those archetypical overzealous Christians.

by Anonymousreply 50July 1, 2020 12:22 AM

R50, I'm guessing Beyonce didn't answer your fan letter.

by Anonymousreply 51July 1, 2020 12:25 AM

Madonna. She was all media hype and her work simply doesnt hold up in 2020. She has no influence.

by Anonymousreply 52July 1, 2020 12:26 AM

I don't really give a shit about her. I just know she's super Christian and probably has to pay handlers to remove her head from her own ass before she shoots a video.

by Anonymousreply 53July 1, 2020 12:27 AM

[quote]I put Michelle Obama there so Beyonce wouldn't be the only black person.

Diana Ross (ALSO ON YOUR LIST) throws side-eye your way.

by Anonymousreply 54July 1, 2020 12:35 AM

[quote]She has no influence.

GaGa's ouvre would like a word.

From the list, OP, the only ones I like are Madonna (up to Like a Prayer) and Cher (hair metal era only) (and Obama but don't think she belongs here).

by Anonymousreply 55July 1, 2020 12:39 AM

Barbra Streisand would get my vote.

by Anonymousreply 56July 1, 2020 12:44 AM

Icons don't actually have to be the best. That's what's so weird, and what people don't seem to get anymore. They strike a chord, so to speak, at the right time and place. Joan Crawford was not the best actress, but she was an iconic movie star, and an iconic gay icon. Just happens. Analysis of whether they were "the best" is always completely beside the point. And Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Michelle Obama may all be great at what they do, but it doesn't make them iconic in any way, shape, or form.

by Anonymousreply 57July 1, 2020 12:46 AM

Cher, on the other hand, came along at the right time with the right look and the right story and now, iconic. There's absolutely no logic to it. It happens or not.

by Anonymousreply 58July 1, 2020 12:47 AM

Jackie Kennedy, iconic. Pretty much every other First Lady of the 20th century, good, bad, indifferent, but not iconic. Maybe Eleanor Roosevelt, but she's in a different category, actual heroine.

by Anonymousreply 59July 1, 2020 12:49 AM

R59, you are right, but she still had a face like an old mop.

by Anonymousreply 60July 1, 2020 12:51 AM

Vance?

by Anonymousreply 61July 1, 2020 12:54 AM

R40 But James Dean wasn't gay either. And wasn't Nancy Culp supposedly gay?

by Anonymousreply 62July 1, 2020 12:54 AM

R61, Viv is NOT overrated! Why, she was Lucy's best friend, for heaven's sake!

by Anonymousreply 63July 1, 2020 12:55 AM

I was BORN THIS WAY

by Anonymousreply 64July 1, 2020 12:57 AM

What way R64? Fraudulent?

by Anonymousreply 65July 1, 2020 1:00 AM

Joe Camel's wife is a gay icon?

by Anonymousreply 66July 1, 2020 1:01 AM

R7, so if someone you like supports gay rights it's cool....but if someone you dislikes supports gay rights it's patronizing?

BTW, some of these people aren't even gay icons. I mean....Taylor Swift?

by Anonymousreply 67July 1, 2020 1:03 AM

Madonna owned a damn decade. You may hate her now, but in the 80s, no, that was not allowed. Yeah, gay icon.

by Anonymousreply 68July 1, 2020 1:07 AM

R50

That is a fucking lie. She loved her gay uncle who died from AIDS and took care of him.

She was the biggest ally to gay marriage and has been promoting pro-gay Democrats.

Beyoncé is a sincere ally. Fuck you.

by Anonymousreply 69July 1, 2020 1:11 AM

super. great, happy for her. not an icon. thanks for sharing.

by Anonymousreply 70July 1, 2020 1:12 AM

We need something like the French Academy which decided which words were actually allowed in, and which weren't. We need the Gay Icon Academy. Many will crowd into the lobby, few will be allowed into the Inner Sanctum!

by Anonymousreply 71July 1, 2020 1:14 AM

R68, Madonna is trash.

by Anonymousreply 72July 1, 2020 1:18 AM

maybe what you think today r72, but sorry, she clawed her way in in the 1980s. Too late now. Bitch was iconic and that is what happened. Ask RuPaul.

by Anonymousreply 73July 1, 2020 1:19 AM

R71, Mon Dieu!

by Anonymousreply 74July 1, 2020 1:21 AM

And Barbara Streisand of course!!! Why? Who knows? who cares?

by Anonymousreply 75July 1, 2020 1:25 AM

"She was the biggest ally to gay marriage and has been promoting pro-gay Democrats."

The biggest allies to gay rights and marriage are gay people. Stop worshipping breeders who just want your money and do nothing for us.

by Anonymousreply 76July 1, 2020 1:30 AM

Me me me

by Anonymousreply 77July 1, 2020 1:37 AM

you were on the cusp Miss Warwick. You get a front row in the lobby, but honestly ...

by Anonymousreply 78July 1, 2020 1:41 AM

R76, you could say the same for all "gay friendly" straight celebs

by Anonymousreply 79July 1, 2020 1:42 AM

by Anonymousreply 80July 1, 2020 2:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 82July 1, 2020 4:44 AM

Princess Diana. Yes, she did charity work including AIDS related work in tbe early days but she was not the saint that people make her out to be.

by Anonymousreply 83July 1, 2020 5:05 AM

R82, are Cass Elliot and Peggy Cass the same person?

by Anonymousreply 84July 1, 2020 6:21 AM

Nancy Kulp OP? FUCK YOU!!!

by Anonymousreply 85July 1, 2020 6:35 AM

R54, I have some news for you about Diana Ross's race.

by Anonymousreply 86July 1, 2020 6:40 AM

The goddam, cocksucking Golden Girls, Rose!

by Anonymousreply 87July 1, 2020 6:49 AM

Kylie!

by Anonymousreply 88July 1, 2020 7:21 AM

What do you suppose James Brolin saw in her?

he seems like a normal actor.. Why did he fall for that shit?

by Anonymousreply 89July 1, 2020 7:26 AM

Taylor Swift and Michelle Obama are not gay icons. Invalid poll by an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 90July 1, 2020 11:05 AM

Bette Midler probably. Given her comments on Larry King.
