Most Overrated Gay Icon
Sometime gays latch onto somebody early in their career, and then, even though the celeb disappoints, they won't let go. It's not like gays as a group are known for having any unhealthy emotional issues vis-à-vis female celebrities, or anything.
Anyway, which of these is the most overrated. Justify your answers in the comments.

Lady Gaga owns this thread. The most patronizing and desperate of all the women listed. That whole "be yourself" BS was ultimately patronizing.

Lady Gag is the Trump of Pop.
And quite reductive. Look it up!

Taylor Swift is NOT a gay icon.
Bey is the most overrated. She’s had like, 3 memorable singles: Single Ladies, Crazy in Love, and Sweet Dreams. Telephone is with Gaga but I guess I’ll be charitable and include it.
People voting for Madonna are insane.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 29, 2020 11:06 PM

Madonna can’t sing or act. She can dance a little. She should have been a pole dancer.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 29, 2020 11:08 PM

Madonna actually did speak out for gays at a time when people thought it was disgusting to associate with them and she was very outspoken on AIDS. Lady Gaga patronized to gays at a time when it was way easier to jump on a trend and act like you supported it all along.

Gaga by far. Goodness, she is a trainwreck.

I understand why people find her annoying, but I think Lady Gaga is the only person on this list whose talents are more underrated than they are overrated. She can legitimately sing beautifully and often makes interesting artistic choices not to do so, and although I thought A Star Is Born was a sappy, Lifetime-caliber movie, her performance was the best part of it. There’s a ton of artifice in her art but she is a talented woman. She also was in my opinion brilliant to respond to a music industry that told her she is too ugly to be a star by taking off her pants and hot gluing muppets to her head so that people couldn’t look away, and then waiting a couple of years before showing off her real performative talents after she was a household name.
Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry started dressing like anime characters after Gaga made it normal, and then Gaga stopped doing it and instead just sang and acted impressively.

I agree with R5. I think Beyonce is the most overrated but Swift doesn't even belong the list. Gaga ushered in a new era of Euro style dance pop and made 70s fashion popular again so she's deserving.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 29, 2020 11:11 PM

This is about being overrated as a gay icon, not their talent. I don't deny her talent--she's just the biggest tryhard and phony of all the women listed. The other women, even Taylor, all come off as more authentic than her. Gaga stopped the whole weird-schtick long after the public gave up on it. Hence ArtPop being a flop.

You left off Britney Spears. Every gay guy I know loves her and I've never understood why.

Britney Spears is vacant enough that any group, whether it be gays, robots, trans, etc. can claim her as a champion of theirs. It's not like she'll object. She's too drugged up to do that.

Gaga had some great jams and brought us all a party joy and aesthetic that was sorely needed during and after the Bush years.
Yes, she was bandwagony with our rights and came off as very trite. But transparent or no, she DID stand up. When has Britney, Christina, Gwen Stefani, etc EVER?
Most importantly, she brought us SHANNON Gaga, one of my favorite personalities from the aughts.

OP, Nancy Kulp and Michelle Obama don’t belong in the poll. Nancy Kulp was a wonderful character actress and she’s a lesbian icon, as well.
Michelle Obama is not an entertainer; she’s universally loved, admired and respected for her humanitarianism. (Aside from being a former excellent First Lady.)

Not one is gay. That’s so interesting...Rosie O’Donnell, Ellen (even with her baggage), K.D. Lang, Oscar Wilde, James Dean, Gore Vidal, Elton John, RuPaul...I’d consider all of them gay idols. I’d throw in Cary Grant as well and Brando since he was openly bi.

Icons don't actually have to be the best. That's what's so weird, and what people don't seem to get anymore. They strike a chord, so to speak, at the right time and place. Joan Crawford was not the best actress, but she was an iconic movie star, and an iconic gay icon. Just happens. Analysis of whether they were "the best" is always completely beside the point. And Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Michelle Obama may all be great at what they do, but it doesn't make them iconic in any way, shape, or form.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | July 1, 2020 12:46 AM

Cher, on the other hand, came along at the right time with the right look and the right story and now, iconic. There's absolutely no logic to it. It happens or not.

Jackie Kennedy, iconic. Pretty much every other First Lady of the 20th century, good, bad, indifferent, but not iconic. Maybe Eleanor Roosevelt, but she's in a different category, actual heroine.
