A lot of actors smoke. I don't know why people are continually surprised by this.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||06/29/2020|
I've never known an actor who didn't. Keeps you thin, gives you an opportunity to socialize, makes you look bohemian.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||06/29/2020|
same here, all actors smoke
|by Anonymous||reply 8||06/29/2020|
Oh god is the fucking Smoking troll back? I thought Muriel finally exterminated that shithead.
This explains the vaping thread too. Ugh.

Jackie O smoked when she was a Kennedy in the White House. Don't know if she smoked in her latter years.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||06/29/2020|
I've heard 1 or 2 packs of smokes, a shot of vodka, a glass of water, and a slice of bread are enough to get people thru the day.
But I've never tried it.

|by Anonymous||reply 24||06/29/2020|
R6/r7/r8 it’s seriously almost all of them, especially below a certain age. I’m not sure why this is surprising either.
I’ve mentioned this before but I’m in the PR/event business and you see it all there (either a fashion event, a screening after party etc) either outside or in some corner somewhere. Only difference between now and the “old days” is they 99% of the time make sure never to get caught on camera.
And ugh Kate Moss is so fucking gross. Why is she still any kind of an icon?
|by Anonymous||reply 25||06/29/2020|
Actors and actresses have always been known to be smokers. They just try to hide it in this day and age because smoking has such a stigma. now.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||06/29/2020|
[quote]Jackie O smoked when she was a Kennedy in the White House. Don't know if she smoked in her latter years.
Jackie was a very heavy smoker right up until she got diagnosed with cancer, and even then she only quit reluctantly.
I love this photo of Jackie clamping a cig in her mouth like a longshoreman, at some fancy event.

|by Anonymous||reply 44||06/29/2020|
I agree with R42 that there is no stigma associated with smoking in many of the European cities I've been to. One just does or one does not. We are a bit hysterical about it here, that's true. Especially since Americans are hardly avatars of health on so many other fronts.
I also wonder if many celebrities -- the really big ones -- continue to smoke because they are just used to getting their own way. One of the reasons I quit was because it was a hassle to smoke wherever you went. But if you owned a restaurant and someone complained that George Clooney was smoking, which one do you think the owner is going to accommodate? If you're some small time actor trying to make it and you got a bit part in one of the Marvel movies, do you think you'll be there tomorrow if you complain about Chris Evans' second-hand smoke?
|by Anonymous||reply 45||06/29/2020|
r45 reminded me that Bette Davis continued to smoke wherever and whenever she felt like it, into the 1980s when lots of regulations banning smoking began to be passed. Bette didn't give a shit, she still smoked in restaurants in Beverly Hills and other places where smoking had been banned and nobody had the nerve to stop her.

|by Anonymous||reply 47||06/29/2020|
I quit smoking about 5 years ago. Getting close to retirement these days. I can tell you that the best career advise always came from going outside to smoke and chatting up fellow smokers. There is a camaraderie between smokers. I had direct access to the Vice President of the company if I provided the Marlboro’s so his wife didn’t know.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||06/29/2020|
Smokers, how is it for you during COVID-19? Is there a lot of shaming when you yank the mask down and light one up?
|by Anonymous||reply 49||06/29/2020|
When I was in my early 20s I smoked, and so did several of the VPs.
I was promoted over other candidates because those VPs had spent time talking to me over a cigarette break, and knew my strengths and weaknesses.
HATED the company, but it helped me move up the ladder, and gave me the confidence and capital to start my own company.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||06/29/2020|
If you work in a professional capacity these days, smoking is a huge liability. It's best not to smoke at all during working hours.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||06/29/2020|
Smokers are only half as likely to test positive for COVID-19, so it’s working out well for them. I bought nicotine patches a couple of months ago after seeing the research on nicotine and coronavirus susceptibility.
It was a fucking bitch not to just buy a pack of cigarettes!!!
|by Anonymous||reply 52||06/29/2020|
To an extent...but smokers know, and will congregate.
If a couple of people in management smoke, and you can persuade them to “clue you in”, then you have a big advantage over the rest of your group. The only time I’ve ever golfed is with upper management, and only because we had developed a rapport while “sneaking a ciggie”. My lack of golf skills was not only endearing, but gave me a chance to “come out” in a nonchalant manner.
I was dying as I said the words, but they already knew I was gay, so their response was “And...?” They didn’t care, so it was much ado. My immediate supervisor was SO hot in those shorts and polo.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||06/29/2020|
R51 the liability piece has driven the smokers into the closet, but the muckity mucks still smoke, as do the peons. There are a ton of closet smokers.

There's nothing remotely surprising about Evans or Affleck smoking--at least to me. They look like smokers.

|by Anonymous||reply 74||06/30/2020|
Julie Andrews was surprisingly a heavy smoker. I saw an interview clip with the little girl from Mary Poppins, she commented that it seems odd that in the movie Mary Poppins is never holding a cigarette like she remembers.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||06/30/2020|
r51 my workplace (academia) has sprinklings of "secret smokers," many in positions of power. Obama was a 2 packs of Marlboro reds a day guy through his presidency, claims Michelle made him quit after he left office, I don't believe it for a second. Look at him in that split-screen thing he did with Biden the other week, when he wore all black. Marlboro reds. Both W and Laura smoke(d).

|by Anonymous||reply 79||06/30/2020|
Stevie Nicks was a heavy smoker, I guess we can surmise that’s why her voice lowered so much and lost her vibrato. That, and misuse, and possibly cocaine.

R72 - she probably smokes like some women I saw here in Romania. With an espresso and slims. The pretty ones make it a sexy ritual at the cafes.
Kate Middleton's face and voice are the archetypal smoker look. Meghan is too shrewd and self-preserving to smoke.
|by Anonymous||reply 88||Last Wednesday at 5:24 PM|
I don't buy Kate Middleton smoking. If she is I know a photo would never get out. The only thing that could convince me is her voice. If she sounds like Lucille Ball once she gets to about 45, I'll believe it.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||Last Wednesday at 5:45 PM|
It was pointed out on a similar thread that almost all former child actors smoke. they were all in a big hurry to be treated like grown-ups and thought this would be a short cut.

Kate Middleton socially smoked when she was an undergraduate, but she absolutely does not now. Neither the Queen nor Prince Charles will tolerate smokers--they both made their current spouses give up smoking as a condition of marrying them. And William would do as they did--he is such a good little boy.

[quote]My doctor growing up smoked. It totally confused me.
My parents were friends with a doctor who smoked and quit when he was his mid 40s. A friend's mother was a nurse and a heavy smoker for a long time. He mentioned that some of his mom's nurse friends were smokers. When I was in college, I worked as a receptionist at a nursing home for awhile and the head nurse and the doctor on staff were smokers. They used to walk down the street to cafe parking lot to smoke.
A few years back, I was watching old episodes of Trauma:Life in the ER and there was one episode where the crew filmed a trauma surgeon smoking outside the hospital. He said he wasn't a heavy smoker and sometimes smoked before he started his workday and would smoke sometimes after performing long surgeries.
|by Anonymous||reply 96||Last Friday at 8:14 PM|
My mother began her nursing career in the 1970s and she told me that smoking was allowed in the lounges on each hospital floor. Patients and their families would go into the lounge for a cigarette, and nobody thought anything of it. My mom told me that the hallways always reeked of smoke. In a hospital, of all places! What a different world it was back then.

When I was in high school the students were allowed to smoke. It was outside on a concrete pad about 20‘ x 30‘ and was less than 15 feet from three huge propane gas tanks!

As someone who lives in Europe we do not laugh at you for anti smoking, we laugh at you for a lot of other reasons.
yes, people smoke openly but here is is a very divisive subject. Some countries have finally admitted that nicotine is a drug and they make drug rehab available for those who want to stop smoking.
We ban it in our restaurants as well and many countries here have strong bans on this addiction.

I know everybody here gets a kick out of whatever her age is but my cousin said she's physically striking and that she was very friendly and down to Earth.

Massachusetts recently banned menthol cigarettes because "that's what young people smoke." It was done as a way to curb youth smoking, which surprised me. Times must've changed because when I was a teenager in the 90s nobody smoked menthols. At my high school it was almost 100% Marlboro with a few Camel smokers and that was it. Menthol smokers were kind of looked down on i.e. "why the fuck are you smoking those shit sticks?"

As others have said, most actors smoke. It calms them down AND helps them concentrate, so they can learn their lines and come off calm and cool when they're in front of a camera (or an audience).

R111, Short has smoked for the last 50 years, that's why he looks 15 years older than his age. Even with good lighting.

The people who genuinely surprised me are the great dancers from the Golden Age, like Fred Astaire, Donald O'Connor, Ann Miller, Eleanor Powell, etc..

In the 60s everyone smoked, even while they were eating. Gross.

Disappointed, but not surprised to learn that Dermot Mulroney has smoked for 30+ years.
He was so beautiful...now all lined and baggy-eyed...and only 56.

I nipped outside a memorial service once for a smoke, and Carrie Fisher was doing the same thing.
She was short.
We didn’t talk much, because a lot of professional autograph seekers lined up, with stuff for her to sign.

I quit smoking 10 years ago. I really miss it. I also feel like I was a lot more fun & relaxed when I was a smoker. I also miss those spontaneous conversations you would have with other smokers.
One of the worst things was when I would get drunk and bum a cigarette and it would be a menthol. It tasted so disgusting!

I'm surprised when I see younger and seemingly health conscious celebrities are smokers. It shows the the power that nicotine addiction has on some people.
I was fortunate enough to decide to quit cold turkey one day on impulse when I was 23. I haven't put a cigarette to my lips since, and that's over 30 years now. Best decision I ever made. Two friends of mine who said they were going to quit back when I did..... but they still smoke today. One has emphysema (and still smokes) and the other has lost all his teeth.

is it unhealthy to just use patches? Are there any negative side effects to that? The concentration and appetite suppression are appealing.

R99, pretending to smoke for a video is nothing. This is Babs between takes getting her nicotine. And of course she lies about it and claims she was never a smoker. Btw, ALL of the old time vocalists smoked.
