Costco discontinues sales of its popular sheet cakes
That stuff looks like it would survive a nuclear holocaust.

One of the best birthday cakes I’ve ever had.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 26, 2020 9:10 PM |
Bitches, I am a cake snob and usually look down my nose at things like Costco sheet cake, but it’s pretty appealing. It’s light and moist. Sometimes you want something heavy and rich with butter and quality ingredients. But sometimes you want a Costco cake.
Now my mouth is watering.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 26, 2020 9:15 PM |
That is dirt cheap for a sheetcake, but the containers don’t recycle without sanitizer and drying time.
Costco donates unsold pastry and these are a big pain to process responsibly. Old folks use this stuff as ballast for drinking.

I used to buy these when I was employed (for the office). They used to have a great carrot cake with apricot filling and cream cheese frosting.

I’ve only ever tasted their carrot cake version of the sheet cake because one of my friends used to get it for her birthdays every year. I’m snobby when it comes to what goes into my mouth (pun intended), but their carrot cake was absolutely fantastic.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 29, 2020 9:07 PM |
They're still selling 10" rounds. Which is easier to fit on your plate at breakfast anyway.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 29, 2020 9:14 PM |
So let me get this straight. They are saying that they won't bake the sheet cakes anymore due to the corona virus. But that small 10" cakes will "resonate" better with customers. That doesn't make any sense.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 29, 2020 9:34 PM |
There is obviously a decrease in demand for party sized cakes. Supply and demand.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 29, 2020 9:36 PM |
They still sell the mini lemon bites cakes. Made with Myers lemons they are like petit fours. Incredibly moist. They are great.

R45, but they fit better in my snack purse.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 29, 2020 10:07 PM |
This is a good time to pick up a box of Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines and bake a cake. Buy an extra can of frosting, too.
You can never have too much frosting or too much chocolate.
Or too much CA$H !
Have fun, future bakers of America !
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 30, 2020 12:14 AM |
Canned frosting is grotesque. Just make your own buttercream lazy fucks-it only has 3 fucking ingredients.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 30, 2020 12:23 AM |
Does Costco doing away with these cakes have anything to do with the virus?
I've never had one but they look good. Still, I live alone. What on earth would I do with such a huge cake. It would be stale or moldy as hell by the the time I even got to the 4th piece. I can't eat a lot of sweets at once. I get sick to my stomach. I doubt they would freeze well. The frosting would be messed up.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 30, 2020 12:25 AM |

Coincidentally Costco has them on display right next to their pot dispensary.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 30, 2020 2:35 AM |
I am a food snob who makes and sells high-end cakes. (A two-layer, 8" cake goes for $50-$75 -And I do a couple that top $100.) Organic ingredients aren't cheap...
When people can't afford my cakes I send them to Costco. Those sheet cakes are actually decent -way beyond the quality of any grocery store and most local bakeries. Butter is involved. And the price can't be beat. I hope Costco is eventually able to bring them back.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 30, 2020 3:11 AM |
This one time at band camp... when I cooked for a mission in buttfuck Illinois, I’d receive messed up sheetcakes (they slid or were lopsided - always sweaty) that I’d dump into a clear plastic container. Using an ice cream scoop, I could give everyone enough sugar and lard to keep even the heavy heroin users happy.

Why discontinue cakes? I would assume that Costcrap customers buy tons of those fatty cakes.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 30, 2020 4:00 AM |
We are returning to hermetically sealed single serving foods.
You can short stock in any bufet-style restaurant holding company. You will not serve yourself at any buffet. That goes for salad bars, too so twice around the garden one last time.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 30, 2020 4:04 AM |
[quote]It's only been mentioned five or six times-- there is NO MARKET for these cakes because few people are hosting large gatherings during the pandemic. OK?
Girl, I intend to eat that whole cake by MYSELF! That's why it doesn't make any sense to discontinue these cakes. Lots of people also buy the cakes for just 2 or 3 people. Not everybody buying one is having a large gathering.
And no, I'm not fat. I just like to treat myself every once in awhile. What else do I have to enjoy right now except food?
by Anonymous | reply 67 | June 30, 2020 4:07 AM |
Then buy more than one smaller cake. They're only discontinuing the HUGE sheet cakes.

[quote] Is it real butter cream?
R61, I'd say no. I used to live near a nice bakery in San Francisco. My favorite thing to eat there was a layered cake with buttercream between the layers. The mouthfeel (sorry) of that buttercream was amazing, it did feel like cold butter in your mouth.
The Costco "buttercream" frosting is not like what I described. The Costco "buttercream" frosting is similar to the Duncan Hines frosting in the plastic tub (which I like).
by Anonymous | reply 75 | June 30, 2020 4:22 AM |
What if you are thin, binge a sheet cake, and then work out obsessively? You don't have to necessarily be a fattie to eat like one.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 30, 2020 4:23 AM |
The Costco sheet cakes (chocolate or white) were office party staples at my old job. My friends and family would not bring / serve the Costco sheet cakes at any get-together.
I agree with the poster(s) above that the working from home and prohibitions against large get-togethers has affected sheet cake sales.
Costco pizza ... That was another office party staple at my old job. Not sure why people like that "combo" pizza with the fucking green bell peppers and white onions.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | June 30, 2020 4:27 AM |
Speaking of pizza I would put a whole pizza on top of the cake. It’s great for breakfast.
