Anyone ever been? Worth a visit?
Definitely worth a visit or more. It's one of my favorite museums. It has a very elegant and simple collectio yet speaks to the breadth and beauty of civilization in a profound way. It's serene. Much of the surrounding neighborhood was/is owned by the de Menil family, so the buildings have a uniformity of color and composition. There are also several related institutions established/sponsored by the de Menil family nearby (the Cy Twombly Gallery, the Rothko Chapel, the Byzantine Fresco Chapel [now without the actual frescoes), University of St. Thomas). The buildings themselves are significant and designed by prominent architects such as Renzo Piano and Philip Johnson. All of this is adjacent to the Montrose gay district.

By the way, that's a typo. I'm not Erna/Miss Helen Bed/Catherine of Siena.

I'm a big fan of Mark Rothko, but found the Rothko Chapel to be drab and underwhelming.

The de Menils did many, many amazing things for Houston. When it came to art and architecture (only part of their charitable donations) they brought class, style, and restraint to an entire neighborhood in Houston.

Ridiculous. You didn't spend enough time there or you missed the spiritual, meditative context. Both?
