Unlike what Lin-Manuel Miranda would like you to believe, Alexander Hamilton was a white slave owner
Why isn't Hamilton being cancelled?

Give it a rest, gurl.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 25, 2020 7:41 PM |
SSHHHHH! The production has black people who rap. It’s sacrosanct.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 25, 2020 7:42 PM |
There is already a thread on this topic. I realize that this is a troll thread but I am bored and will respond. The biography Hamilton is based on is the real problem. It portrays Hamilton as ahead of his time in terms of his attitude towards slavery. People have talking about problems Hamilton for a while now. Here is an article from 2018. I sometimes ask students to read it.
On balance, I think Hamilton is great for history even if it's not the best history.

After his appearance on "The Tonight Show", Lin Manuel Miranda is completely cancelled for me.

He said that while he was a fan of Sondheim's in general, he didn't care much for FOLLIES.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 25, 2020 7:53 PM |
Yes, "Hamilton" is an attempt to make white people feel good about the racist, colonialist origins of the Founding Fathers. I would love someone to stage a version with all-white actors in the roles while the cargo hold of a slave ship is recreated in diorama by black actors in the background.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 4, 2020 5:57 AM |
I don't give a shit either way, but it is funny that all these white actors say they will no longer voice black characters, and if you hired a white to play a famous Hispanic leader or Black historical leader (Julia Roberts IS Harriet Tubman) heads would explode, but there's a Hispanic and Black playing white Historical figures.
(yes I know the multiracial cast is the POINT of Hamilton, but the KKK could say an all white cast of Raisin in the Sun IS the point lol)

Did multiple tweets tell him he can't sing and his rapping voice is also annoying?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 4, 2020 6:14 AM |
seriously, why is it ok for POC to play white historical figures but white actors can't voice black characters
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 4, 2020 11:31 PM |
R18, check your white privilege!
Just kidding. It’s hypocritical, but what do you expect? The tail is wagging the dog now.

I'll go see "Hamilton" when it becomes the story of this great lady.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 6, 2020 1:46 PM |
Lots of articles being written now that point out the Schulyer family (the sisters being major characters in the show, one being Hamilton's wife) were big slave owners and that Hamilton helped them buy slaves apparently. Plus the issue of slaves isn't brought up in "Hamilton", nor are there anyone representing slaves in the show, and most of the cast are POCs.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 7, 2020 4:40 PM |
It's starting to be addressed now on ATC from Wayman's initial posting. Guy who responded wrote long piece within that hour and 40 minutes or so. He probably had it at the ready. Thing is, those plays of Shakespeare, "1776" didn't have almost the entire cast consisting of POCs playing white characters, while almost avoiding the subject of slavery, which is quite major at the time. If Miranda did, he might have to come up with some device as to who would play the slaves (maybe puppets? who knows?) since he already has a white guy playing the villainous fool George III. So he avoids casting the chorus -- instead having them dance around in underwear and lingerie instead, but as unspecified people at many times.

R21, slavery is brought up in Hamilton, in that Thomas Jefferson is called out for owning slaves.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 7, 2020 10:06 PM |
Plus the issue of slaves isn't brought up in "Hamilton",...
That’s not true. Slavery is mentioned several times
nor are there anyone representing slaves in the show, and most of the cast are POCs.
Wait, what? Because the cast is made up of people of color, they’re supposed to be playing slaves?
Please tell me I’m misinterpreting you here.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 7, 2020 10:07 PM |
No, I'm saying since there are POCs playing the Founding Fathers and a white guy playing the KIng, one way Miranda got around making slavery a bigger part of the show was to avoid casting anyone as slaves.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 7, 2020 10:18 PM |
They are erasing and insulting him by using a black cast. As long as you erase "Whitey" one way or the other, it's okay.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 7, 2020 10:23 PM |
You know why.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 7, 2020 10:24 PM |
Sally Hemmings is actually portrayed for two seconds in the show, handing Jefferson a letter in the Act II opener.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 7, 2020 10:25 PM |
1) It's quite possible that Lin Manuel Miranda has African ancestry; it's pretty common in Puerto Rico (thus Blatino husbears.)
2) Casting black actors as white characters has long been a thing on Broadway (see the 1976 revival with Robert Guillaume and Ken Page)
3) Also, fuck you for being a race baiting troll.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 7, 2020 10:30 PM |
oop, I mean the 1976 revival of the very white (and very Jewish) musical "Guys and Dolls")
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 7, 2020 10:31 PM |
Historically, Hamilton's race was always suspect, much like the rumors that surrounded Sally Hemmings' children until proven true in the late 20th century.
Alexander Hamilton's father was Black.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 7, 2020 10:32 PM |
R29 Miranda's the one playing with race and making it the gimmick of his show.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 7, 2020 10:34 PM |
Real question : Do you think sondheim will fade? Ex: I saw the girl version of Company. - it was fine but still dated. (Viva lupone).
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 7, 2020 10:38 PM |
No r31 he was not.
Hamilton and his older brother James Jr. (1753–1786) were born out of wedlock to Rachel Faucette, a married woman of half-British and half-French Huguenot descent, and James A. Hamilton, a Scotsman who was the fourth son of Alexander Hamilton, the laird of Grange in Ayrshire. Speculation that Hamilton's mother was of mixed race, though persistent, is not substantiated by verifiable evidence. She was listed as white on tax rolls.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 7, 2020 10:39 PM |
Hamilton is minstrelry from a light-skinned Hispanic man seeking cultural approval from whites.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 7, 2020 10:39 PM |
Now that whites won't voice blacks, straights won't play gays, and only trans will play trans, does that mean that only felons will play felons and [italic]The Miracle Worker[/italic] will never be produced again because there are very few blind, deaf actors?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 7, 2020 10:51 PM |
No, blacks can play anyone, seems to be the rule, but not in reverse.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 7, 2020 10:54 PM |
We need an all white dreamgirls now
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 7, 2020 11:37 PM |
Friend and I tried watching it Sunday and failed after 15 minutes. Thin reedy voices, confusing cast. I don't get all the raves.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 8, 2020 12:06 AM |
Sigh.
If you say so, know-it-all @ R34. And you write with such conviction and authority, almost as though you were there at the moment of Hamilton's conception!

So we saw it on Broadway a year ago and loved it. I wasn’t terribly interested (I hate rap and wokeness) and mostly went for bragging rights because the tickets were free. The show won me over with its talented cast and being there love. The atmosphere in the theater was electric.
We streamed it using SIL’s password and I walked away after 20 minutes. The rap was aggravating, the original cast didn’t seem as good, and it just didn’t translate for me. I don’t know.

I'll join him. So far you've not offered any proof--just dismissive remarks.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 8, 2020 7:59 PM |
Slavery is mentioned at least 3 times. The brief part with Sally Hemmings mentioned above, Hamilton mentions Jefferson owning slaves during their "rap battle," and "Yorktown" includes the line, "we'll never be free until we end slavery."
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 8, 2020 8:59 PM |
Actually Hamilton had a very complicated relationship to slavery. He supported it sometimes, while working to limit it other times
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 8, 2020 9:10 PM |
The POC playing parts in Hamilton are there to make a specific point.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 8, 2020 9:11 PM |
No he wasn’t OP. Don’t showcase your ignorance. But like all leaders and movers and shakers of his time he lived and worked in a world where slavery was a functioning economic business model as heinous and inefficient as it was. It was the huge nasty beast in the room just as it’s remnants are today.
