What is a movie that shouldn't have been made?
On a thread a long time ago, someone mentioned the film Bloodsucking Freaks. From the title, I thought it would be a campy delight. NO. I couldn't watch more than ten minutes of it.
I have no idea why this film was made. The atrocious production values aside, it's basically just 90 mins of naked women being tortured in the worst possible ways imaginable. Who watches something like that ... for ostensible "entertainment" no less? This film has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
A runner up ... while it's a very good film, I always had qualms about the Brazilian film Pixote. I won't say it shouldn't have been made, but it's very exploitative. The fact the main actor was 11 or so when it was filmed didn't sit right with me. In one scene, he suckles the breast of an adult woman. In another, he is shown watching porn (with some older teenagers) while they simulate masturbation. For me, those scenes crossed a boundary.
What are some other films that should never have been made?

Les Miserables
Phantom of the Opera
Evita.
Three godawful properties that predictably resulted in three godawful movies.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
Spacey and Law nailed their parts at least looks/costumewise,, and Chablis was the saving grace, but the rest of the movie was utter garbage and an insult to the book.

It’s wrong to say Midnight in the Garden of Evil or Les Mis, Phantom and Evita shouldn’t have been made.
They just should have been made into better movies.

R5 Actually, Midnight should not have ever been a movie.
What it should have been and could still be is a miniseries or limited series.

Bloodsucking Freaks had a great poster and title and that's about it. Most movies don't make me sick to my stomach but that one did. Not so much because of the violence, but because it had no point. It all seemed so cynical. I enjoy quite a few slasher movies, but this one just didn't do it for me.
There's a movie called Pieces that's basically the exact same thing - women being torn in half, stabbed, and chainsawed for 90 minutes, but due to the bad dubbing and horrible acting, it's hilarious.
I find movies like Funny Games and The Strangers to be sort of useless. They're suspenseful and scary for about the first half hour and then it's just people being tortured, making dumb decisions, and then dying until the end. They make me feel scummy. There's absolutely no hope and you leave depressed. At least something like Hostel had a character using their wits to escape to freedom at the end and Last House on the Left at least has a message about how revenge won't satisfy you in the end.

[bold]Hannibal[/bold] (2001). If they couldn't follow the goddamned book, then they shouldn't have made the film.
Jodie Foster is responsible for sending it off the rails, insisting that she knew her character, Clarice Starling, better than Thomas Harris, who originated the character in the novels. She threw her star weight around at the studio, forcing them to hire at great expense writers who would refashion the ending. She then declined to reprise her role anyway; it was given to Julianne Moore. But since the ending had been re-written, re-written it remained.
Ruined. Completely ruined.

BLOODSUCKING FREAKS is amusing camp.
Prisspots need to unclench about exploitation flicks. Not everyone uses them for the torture porn, but those who do deserve a non-violent outlet for their rage or fantasies.
Furthermore BLOODSUCKING FREAKS has literary value. It’s a cautionary tale that some freaks into S&M can take things too far, which happens in real life. It also sends a strong message to would-be lady butchers that sooner or later, the people you’re torturing are going to revolt and tear you to pieces, too.
Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Top Gun starring Tammy Cruise. Saw it years ago when it came out and an awful, plodding film despite the eye candy in it. Was the type of movie that John Wayne might have made a long time ago. My niece gave a copy of it to me to watch some time back and after 15 minutes I just couldn't sit through anymore of it so I turned it off. Despite its popularity, a terrible movie. And no, I can assure you that I won't be going to see the upcoming sequel. I'm through with Tom Cruise, period.

A Chorus Line, based on the big hit Broadway play. It would have taken a genius to turn it into a good movie and it appeared that the best they could come up with was all trolls, including the actors which included Michael Douglas, the star. An awful abortion of a movie and it flopped badly at the box office.

About 10 years ago I watched a British horror movie (or tried to watch it, anyway) called Mum & Dad. it was about a woman who ends up being held captive by the family of a co-worker - turns out the family are a bunch of sadistic psycho killers, and they want to adopt her as one of their own. At one point fairly early on, the entire family are watching porn together, and dad jacks off into the freshly harvested heart of one of their victims, as the whole clan watches approvingly. I didn't get any further than that.

I agree with you on Bloodsucking Freaks. I wonder how the director convinced the women to degrade themselves like that on camera. It looked like they didn't have much of a budget so it couldn't have been money.
Another I would say is Megan Is Missing. It seemed like it took a little too much pleasure showcasing the girls being raped and tortured, describing their underage sexual experiences, etc. It was disguised as a "message about Internet safety," but it feels so exploitative and sleazy. It is one of the only horror movies I've ever watched where I felt like whoever made this must really be a creep/pervert.

90% of remakes. In most cases, the original is fine as it is and remaking it is unnecessary. If you can't make it equally good or better than what's the point?
I'd say sequels too. Most sequels are made for money, not because the story actually needs it.

Bloodsucking Freaks was one of those movies whose VHS artwork probably called out to a whole generation of kids at the video store. I'm not surprised many decided to give it a go.
I used to be all about movies like that, because they were like endurance tests to a teenager. I'd dare myself to make it all the way through something like that or I Spit on Your Grave or Last House on the Left. As I've gotten older, stuff like that is harder to stomach. I'm starting to understand why so many of the adults in my life were horrified by my rental choices back in the day.

An Australian film from a year or two ago called THE NIGHTINGALE (from the same director as THE BABADOOK). She's a very talented director, but it seemed like she was simply intent on showing as much ugliness as possible. Ultimately, it added up to a more politically correct, arthouse version of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE and nothing more.

Pretty much any torture film. I thought the first Saw was pretty good. It's not a very gory movie at all and relied more on suggestion, but once that became a hit, it seemed like there was a new one every other week. I remember being dragged by a friend to see one called Captivity with Elisha Cuthbert which was just scene after scene of her suffering some form of torture after another, but the most disgusting was when her captor shoved a bunch of body parts into a blender and made her drink it. It was just disgusting and there was no need for it whatsoever. The film had nothing to say about society or violence in general and it came across as pure sleaze.
