Kath and Kim Question
How on Earth can Kath afford to keep that house running? Is she retired? They had it in the show that Kim's father took off and left all his debts to Kath. What money did she still have coming in? Then she gets married to Kel who basically has a meat stand... how does she afford the lifestyle she has? I know it's a television show, but the fact that they went into what happened with Kim's father, it just doesn't make any sense. I don't recall them ever saying Kath had another job outside of being a secretary in for Kim's father's pool business.
A question to Aussies: how expensive would you consider Kath's house? What about the area of Melbourne they're in?

I didn’t realize they were in Melbourne. I figured it was Brisbane-adjacent or Adelaide.

One of the effluent areas.

I’m always fascinated by the real mall that they use as location for the show.

Kath's home is typical of Australian middle-class late 80s, so she probably bought it when the country was still in recession and prices were reasonable.

The only thing I can come up with is that they live on credit.

Kath and Kim as partially based on an 80s show called Sylvania Waters, a reality show about Aussie "battlers". Underdog, working-class individuals who manage to gain wealth persevering through their commitments despite adversity.

Yes, the Donahers of Sylvania Waters were one of the first, if not the very first "fly on the wall" reality show families in Australia or anywhere else. The show was televised on the BBC in the UK in 1992, and caused quite a stir there for Brits who could not believe the domestic drama of the show was not scripted. It accurately depicts the lives of many cashed-up bogans of the 80s and 90s.

OP you do realise that it’s a satire, not a documentary, right?

Kath was also probably on welfare payments of some kind. Australia is one big welfare state after all.
Also, Kath's former husband (Kim's father) was a businessman who owned a swimming poll business so she probably got a really good settlement in the divorce.

Meanwhile Jane Turner (Kath) has recently listed her real life abode for sale with an estimated price guide of $7.3-8M

R14, he left her with all his debts. He was involved with the mob and disappeared. They never divorced until years later when he suddenly showed up in the show. Kath and Kim weren’t legally married like they thought.

R17 The house is semi-detached.
The real house has a water frontage; but the TV version has a Colourbond fence blocking the house from the lake.

Youse people are getting up my goat. Kath explained that when Gary decamped to Honkers she was left with the marital home and she "sold it for a bomb" during one of Australia's property booms. Lots of money left over for an ordinary suburban house and superannuation. Plus the early 2000's were like another world to us now, people refinanced and lived high off the hog.

^ I thought my parent's generation in the 1950s were the golden days of 'living high off the hog' but now millennials tell me the 1990s were the great days of 'living high off the hog'.

I can’t believe Gina Riley was in her 40s playing a 26 year old convincingly.

R24, right? My grandparents raised five daughters. He was a factory foreman and she was a hospital secretary. They owned a nice house in a nice suburb, had a Cadillac, a housekeeper and retired to take a vacation in Hawaii every few years.
They’d be struggling to rent an apartment in 2020, and retirement would be a distant hope.

Kath and Kim are full-rounded believable characters but Sharon Strezlecki is just full of failure and self-hatred.
And poor Magda —who used to be brilliantly clever— ten years ago has the Weight Watchers fiasco and lots of public self-pity and public guilt-tripping.
