Eddie Murphy doesn't read
From the November WSJ Magazine:
"I don't watch the news. I don't read the newspaper. I'm really disconnected. Usually I hear about stuff, that's how I find out what's going on. I'll go like two or three months where I don't read nothing. Maybe longer than that, six months of no news, no newspaper. Nothing. Not paying attention to any of it.... I have no computer."
Can you imagine?

These days, that actually seems wise.

Classy, R1.
And yes, I can understand. If anything, it's liberating not to pay attention to all of the bullshit. He has a full life and lots of wealth. He can occupy his time other ways.

It must be nice not have to be in the rat race of life like the rest of us. He doesn't have to work another day in his life

Those who’ve reached a certain level of fame (well, certain ones) only like to be surrounded by “yes, men.” Any reminder of reality they’re too fragile and ego driven to handle.
Yes it’s healthy to take SM breaks no doubt but that’s very different from saying “I have the money and fame level to create my own reality, so fuck you.” And not all super famous people do this (certainly to that degree). Only the ones with the biggest egos.
Oh well, at least he’s still funny.

How does he keep his comedy current?
Oh, never mind.

Sounds luxurious so that you can focus on activities you’d really like to do! It’s so easy to clutter your mind these days with all the technology that surrounds us. I used to watch the evening news every night and realized that every day there’s always more drama. It’s draining! I’m addicted to the Internet so I have that problem.

I stopped watching television news quite a while ago and I'm much happier for it. I do read on the internet but that's about all. If I could afford to I'd probably disconnect entirely and move somewhere I can't be bothered.

Same, R10. I don't watch any news on television anymore. I watch John Oliver and read DL and Twitter sometimes - mostly for funny memes/comments in response to trump or his idiot supporters. Everything else is just shopping or watching movies.

He lives in a huge mansion in Beverly Park, has a staff catering to his every need and surrounded by unimaginable luxury. He wants for nothing. Why bother his beautiful mind with the troubles and issues of this world.

Ellen made a similar quote about this too. I'm sure it's the same with Oprah.

It says he doesn’t read newspapers and magazines, particularly to unplug from pop culture. He could still be reading books.
[QUOTE] Eddie explained, “I used to be the hippest of them all. I used to know everything about everything. I used to read about everything that was going on and I knew everybody’s name and anybody in pop culture. Anything that was written about me I would read. And for the last maybe 20 years — I haven’t read a newspaper in 20 years, or read a corporate magazine. If there’s an article about me, someone has to read through it before they even give it to me. I don’t want to see anything that has anything negative. I don’t want to read any of that. So, I don’t know what y’all think. I don’t have a computer, I don’t have email–I don’t have any of that.”

Murphy has always been a piece of shit... He used to be VERY homophobic in his comedy act, then, he got caught picking up a trans hooker. Murphy starred & directed in a movie called "Norbit", in which a group of mostly white people chase a black family out of town, this is the happy ending of the film! Yet, no one is "cancelling" Murphy.

More people should avoid the news. For many it just exacerbates mental illness.
[quote] He's got like 10 kids and a younger wife. No time.
His kids are grown, minus the last 2. On Comedians in Cars, he talked about how he hated for them to grow up and move out. He loves being at home being at home with his children.

Let's define what is news. It literally takes 5 mins twice a day to get the news. Online or TV. The rest is spin and talking heads. Doesn't interest me.
While Eddie doesn't seem like a bibliophile to me, I am sure he reads scripts, business proposals, reports, etc. He is a business. There's probably no shortage of stuff for him to read. My work is the same. Altho I am worth substantially less.. Ha.
I read for interest or to relax but not voraciously. And I cannot abide fiction... My god

I wonder if he heard how Alan Arkin beat him for the Oscar when everyone thought he'd win. Most humiliating loss ever (except of course for G's 7th.)

When he got caught in the early-morning hours with the tranny-hooker, this non-reader told the cops - wait for it - he'd gone out to get a newspaper.
Professional dipshit Jimmy Fallon also takes pride in the fact that he doesn't read. And then he gets all whiny about trailing the infinitely better-informed Colbert and Kimmel in the ratings.
I can't be bothered with hedonists who take pride in their illiteracy.

Years ago when I suffered anxiety and panic attacks one of the first suggestions my therapist made was stop watching the news. You know what? It helped a lot!

R23 The humiliation was of Murphy's own making. His ego is so giant it left a gaping hole to the pits of hell open when he stormed out of the theatre that night. Sheesh...what a pleasure he must be to deal with

I haven't watched talking-head news since the orange turd was "elected." I read online, and follow leads posted by others here and elsewhere, but I just can't stomach tuning in to the heads.

Lots of people don't read the newspaper or watch tv news. That's why so many fall for conspiracy theories, etc. that their friends or relatives tell them.

In some ways, Eddie might be on to something. The inmates are running the asylum in once lovely places like Seattle. Government officials do absolutely nothing about it except to ask, "how high" when told to jump by deranged sjws. I've turned to watching old movies, especially in the film noir genre, along with Seinfeld and Murphy Brown.

Some actors read. In the case of most actors, if they liked to read, they never would have become actors in the first place. Check out Eddie's filmography. He clearly does not like to read. If he had, he might have made some truly interesting movies with his starpower. Instead, his best work is in mediocre movies where he created very funny characters with heavy makeup and a lot of performance work.

Today I was asking myself - what will miss if I don't read my online news sources? Looking back to my youth, we didn't have the glut of information hitting us like we do today. Do we need it? No, not at all. In most cases we are merely reading small talk. I am going to cut way back. I do a lot of crosswords to keep my brain sharp, and that is pretty mindless, depending on the difficulty. I have read every noteworthy book ever written. Do I think the Bolton or Markle books will make my must read list - NO. Do people have hobbies today? I am concerned as to where our country and our lifestyles are going. The latest ethnic awakening will die down. Does anyone else think anything will change?

My dad used to watch the nightly national news for 30 minutes every night after dinner. He called it his “depression session “. I would ask him why would you watch it if it makes you depressed? He was always depressed to begin with anyway!
