Well that's my guess anyway. When he came to the US, he represented Thatcherism, and what was different about Thatcherism from traditional US conservatism? Privatization. Britain had many state owned companies. By privatizing them and awarding contracts to them, they managed to get companies to contribute big money to political campaigns. In the US before that time there was no constituency for privatization, no hate of public utilities or the post office. People laughed at southern nutjobs like Treen who wanted to abolish public education. It was the widespread adoption of Thatcherism in the US that tied the conservatives to professional corruption. And we've bene paying for it ever since.

He really loves the sound of his own voice. I watched him on Bill Maher the other night and he was constantly interrupting or speaking over the other guest. It appears he was never taught that being an articulate speaking requires one to be a good listener.

The American press consists of about a hundred pompous bloviating asses like Sullivan, taking turns getting booked on CNN. They all went to the same universities and attend the same parties. They're superficially socially liberal but won't touch the real elephant in the room : the insane level of power the very rich have in American society and the increasing gap between the richest and the poorest.

agree, r51, that has been the consensus for a long time, that insane income inequality is just the norm, and nothing we can do about. R57 Maher is straight. In the mid 90s, I was in New Orleans for a conference, doing the touristy thing and bar hopping in the French Quarter. Who should walk in to the bar but Bill Maher with three women in tow (none of whom looked much older than 19 or 20, if that). It was during the years of his show "Politically Incorrect", which I watched all the time. We ended up following them to a few different bars. He kind of kept those girls at arms length, so I'm guessing they were some groupies that latched on to him. He's pretty short, if I remember correctly.
