Doctor describes 'ecstatic' moment coma patient woke up after 27 years
Can you imagine?
[quote]Doctors had little hope that Munira Abdulla would ever wake up after suffering a brain injury in a 1991 car crash.
[quote]MAINZ, Germany — A doctor who treated a woman who woke up 27 years after a car crash left her in a coma has spoken of the "ecstatic" moment she began to talk again and said how rare her case is.
[quote]Munira Abdulla was injured while driving her son, Omar Webair, home from school in their native United Arab Emirates in 1991. She was 32 and he was 4 the time.

Her family should have let her die 26 years ago.

OP I don't think women were allowed to drive in AE in 1991.....They just got the law changed in 2009 I think....

Women in the UAE weren't legally allowed to drive until 2018. IF Abdulla was driving in 1991, she was driving illegally.

She was male at the time, transitioned by the doctor while in a coma.

She woke up and found out Donald Trump was president and said, please put me back in the coma.

I have medical people doctors in my family, heard this story before several times. It's rare but it dose happen if the family doesn't pull the plug and starve them to death first. Odd part is usually come back totally as if it was yesterday, no memory loss. Except their bodies being minimally moved all those years they have to go to rehab to get the strength to walk again and do other things. On the plus side, their skin is usually flawless from sun damage.

And then they get the hospital bill.

Maybe, R9, but that isn't this lady. If you read the article, one of her accomplishments is listed as "she can tell if someone's gone travellling". If that's a highlight, she still suffers quite bad cognitive damage.

Yeah, I can imagine, all too well. The first thing I’d wish for upon wakening in her condition would be to be back in a coma.

I hate hearing stories like this, because it encourages irrational behavior by grieving relatives who keep their vegetative-state relatives on expensive and fruitless life support long past reason.

For those who keep talking about the hospital bill, she’s in a civilized country where you can be in a coma for 20+ years and don’t have to kill yourself immediately after waking up because of your medical debt.
A tiny sprinkle of socialism goes a long way.

R23 It is clear that her family has money - she was being flown to multiple countries for treatment- while in a coma - where she would have no right to claim taxpayer- funded healthcare. Rich Arabs are a cash cow for posh hospitals in the US - I trained at a lovely hospital with a former Four Seasons chef located in La Jolla that took care of the royal family in Bahrain. They had a floor with these massive rooms. UCLA has a VIP floor as well.
I do support Medicare for all.

Imagine going to sleep at 32 years of age and awaking, all rested up, at 59.
Ugh.

Also, being from the UAE and not a German/EU citizen, it's highly unlikely she didn't have to pay for treatment in Germany.
[quote]Ms Abdulla spent years in hospitals in the UAE, moving from place to place because of insurance constraints. In April 2017, the Crown Prince Court heard about her story and gave the family a grant for a comprehensive multidisciplinary programme in Germany.

She was probably driving a stick shift. Women cannot drive shifts! GEEEZ! Is she going to jail now since she's awake and can atone for her unlawful driving?

My friend was a nurse for a patient who woke up after 16 or so years. She said it wasn't good. He wasn't normal. He'll never be normal and it's a nightmare for the family. He didn't remember his children, has no impulse control and tries to grab his daughters ass/boobs. Coma guy's parents are older and can't take care of him. His kids don't want to take care of him. The guy is in bad health and has the mind of a teenager

Yep a lot of the brain damaged end up in jail, and I have seen many when I worked in corrections as a physician. Their frontal lobes are full of holes and they act out sometime in violent ways. Sometimes they can be medicated and sedated. But they are scary- like giant angry toddlers. The one discussed above will no doubt end in jail for elder abuse.

This isn't going to end well. I don't see a reason to applaud this.

I dont think they all end up with damaged brains. This case is particularly interesting because the kid in a coma was parked in front of a TV for 8 hours a day to watch kids show and when he came out of his coma, he told them he was aware of everything that happened while he was in that state and he cannot stand fucking Barney!
