Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn featuring Miss Frances Faye: I Have Questions
My quarantine hobby has turned into watching old TV movies on YouTube. I started out with horror-related ones (Thanks to the Sam Pancake Presents the Monday Afternoon Movie podcast....start listening now!!!) and now I get all sorts of suggestions. So far, my favorites have been "Scream Pretty Peggy" with Bette Davis and Donald from "That Girl," "Beverly Hills Madam" with Faye Dunaway and her nostrils and "Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn" featuring Miss Frances Faye.
I have questions...
1. So, is Alexander gay or not? We know he is a "sensitive artist" and all, but he seems to love Dawn. But he also seems to love the football player. It feels like he was written as gay, but there was trouble. Thoughts?
2. Who is Earl Holliman's character supposed to be? A lawyer? Social worker? Why was he invited to the football player's party? He just shows up everywhere. I was surprised by the late in the game gay reveal. Wasn't Holliman gay IRL as well?
3. Was the football player closeted? If so, why would he risk going to a gay bar (is it a gay bar?) to see Miss Frances Faye with Alexander? If he is comfortable going to a gay bar, why does he need a live in hooker? Couldn't he just meet someone there? Even pre-internet, someone would take pictures of a famous athlete at a gay bar and get them published.
4. Leigh McClosky, was hot, wasn't he? (not really a question)
5. Who the fuck is Miss Frances Faye and why do I have to call her Miss? Why did she get such fancy billing in this?
6. Finally....was this popular? It's not terrible like so many of its ilk are, but it sure isn't great.
Thanks for your time.

How does this work? You watch the movie first and then rewatch it with the podcast audio as a commentary track?

I was hoping some of your questions would be about Beverly Hills Madam.
I LOVE that movie too

^BUT I will answer one of your questions
Frances Faye (November 4, 1912 – November 8, 1991) was an American cabaret and show tune singer and pianist. Born to a working-class Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York City, she was a second cousin of actor Danny Kaye.

Much appreciated!
But WHY does she get such great billing for being in maybe half a scene in the movie?
"Featuring MISS FRANCES FAYE" as HERSELF"

You're going to ask who Dorothy Squires is next, aren't you?

Earl Holliman, at age 91, is alive and still gay.

R4 Because she was the one non-actor in the cast, famous on her own for being an entertainer, and I am sure it was part of her contract to get special billing since she performs part of her act in the show. The reason she was chosen to be in the movie I'm sure was this [from wikipedia]:
'Her act became famous for including double entendres and references to homosexuality and lesbianism.[1] Faye herself was bisexual and hinted at this frequently in her act;[2] she would often playfully alter pronouns in love songs or weave her girlfriend's name into lyrics of song.'
I remember watching this when it aired as a gayling, and I thought oooh Frances Faye is in this! (because of the special billing)
I had know idea who she was, but she got special billing so I was excited to find out.

Now someone ask something about Beverly Hills Madam, or I'm going to bed

Fine, [r9].... Did Faye not have any kind of security system in place? It felt like Mayflower Madam starring Candice Bergen spent at least a half an hour telling us about the elaborate security measures in place for in calls. Faye, apparently not.
If you were the gross uncle (or whoever that guy was) at the engagement party, wouldn't you be embarrassed to admit, to friends and family, that you recognized the bride-to-be as a hooker you banged on a boat?
Is the best plan for your son losing his virginity (which is always a tacky construct,) why plan on having it be with a hooker who he thinks is really just a very nice girl he may fall for? Seems cruel.
Melody Anderson was good in this. Did she deserve a better career?

It's a wonder Faye had any nostrils past the '70s.

Lil Hutton lived in Beverly Hills, so security is not a question.
Gross Uncle didn't admit to friends and family, just his nephew who was going to marry the whore.
You know what they say about "best laid plans" - no it wasn't a good plan - but then, rich people ya know?
Melody Anderson did tons of tv work before Madam, and after. No one deserves anything

Holy Shit. In OP’s clip at 33:00 is a young Mike from Breaking Bad/Saul and Linda’s Film On Menstruation, Jonathan Banks.
He’s wearing a hat and is rappin’ about being gay.

I thought the Frances Faye scene was to show him and his date going to the gay Backlot at Studio One. Faye was just an incidental. It could have been Jane Olivor or Helen Schneider or Wayland and Madam. Anyone who was big on the gay cabaret scene.

l saw this when it came out originally and it was fairly groundbreaking at the time. I thought the character Alexander was in love with the footballer also.............but the show had to have it end where he ends up with Dawn and they leave LA and live happily ever after.

"Even pre-internet, someone would take pictures of a famous athlete at a gay bar and get them published."?
Not necessarily. Rock Hudson would occasionally go to gay bars. It's not like most people would bring cameras to bars. Even today, stars will often threaten/harass anyone who tries to take their picture in a "compromising" situation

The movie that truly made me want to be a male hustler. It looked so exciting and hot -- as if all the guys looked like Leigh J (though some indeed did back then). Thankfully, I grew up and never actually did it but I faked it a couple of times, both on SM Blvd and at Numbers. Fun times.

Alexander was straight but gay for pay. He didn't so much love the jock as being jealous of the new little boytoy.. He had a decent job and place to live and that would have all ended rather abruptly if Blondie put out for the football player and took his place.
