Will we be watching?
On one hand just like that movie we can expect a gay story without the gay, designed to be feel good family viewing for the fraus.
One other hand it is a show with a gay character as the lead which doesn't happen every day.

Actually premieres at midnight but is already streaming in a Twitter "watch party"

Let's accept this as a win for our representation and stop putting puritan tests to everything. We gotta win wherever , whenever
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 17, 2020 3:16 AM |
Well one purity tests it fails is like the movie they cast a straight actor as the lead r2.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 17, 2020 3:24 AM |
Yay, more straight actors playing gay characters.
I mean I'll watch it, but still...

The lead is cute as fuck!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 17, 2020 3:59 AM |
The straights are onto that criticism so they now either refuse to answer the question or pull a Lucas Hedges "I am a kinsey 1.5 because I once got boner at summer camp when I was wrestling with a friend even though I have never actually had any sexual contact with another guy in my life" so technically he isnt straight and you are actually biphobic for even asking him such an impertinent question. He and his publicist hit a home run with that story and Ellen was more than happy to give him a minute or so to explain the mystery of sexuality as a spectrum in a not very convincing run on sentence on her show. He was even less convincing in interviews after trying to square that circle but it did the job.
My point is their agents and managers now have a way to deflect that criticism without tainting them with Hollywoods homo career killing curse.
PS - I actually think Lucas was shading the truth and he probably has had sex or a relationship with a guy but still thought he had a shot for male roles that involve sex or intimacy with women (like the teenage boy screwing his girlfriend and having awkward conversations with his uncle Matt Damon about it in Manchester by the Sea). I thought that he was good in that role but he seemed uncomfortable with the sex scenes for whatever reason. He was much more convincing as the closeted drama teen in Ladybird - I got a little misty eyed when he finally broke down in tears and told her he was gay and then they were gal pals after that...
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 17, 2020 4:36 AM |
Probably an unpopular opinion, but everyone is too pretty. It looks like a CW show through an Instagram filter.
The “kids” in the film were a little more believable-looking and relatable.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 17, 2020 4:48 AM |
I hate shit like this, but it's not aimed at me anyway. isn't this for the Pittsville High Gay Straight Queer Alliance crowd? what do fraus have to do with it??
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 17, 2020 5:23 AM |
Michael Cimino has been talking about how his cousin is gay r6.
"I was really drawn to the role because my cousin's gay and I really wanted to kind of be that voice he didn't have, and for the other kids who are or were in his position," he explained.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 17, 2020 12:47 PM |
Not to sound jaded, but this show looks like it aiming at teenage yoai-lovers and fraus.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 17, 2020 2:00 PM |
Actually all teens, teen girls in particular are okay with this.
In blue America, gay is increasingly like being left handed--not a big deal. (Red Murica, OTOH....)
Women like cute gay male characters because they are not competing with another woman for their affection. Hence the many, many, many frau-fueled threads on DL about actors the frauen think are gay (Chalamet-Hammer) because they played gay roles.
Gays who think "being gay" = being a ProMo (Professional Homosexual) and living in WeHo and screaming "Slay Queeen Slay!!!!' or bragging about their superior decorating skills are turned off by this and don't view it as "authentically gay"
Everyone else is like "finally!"

Just watched the first ep, it's exactly what you expect it will be for better or worse. Pleasant enough watching.
And I am not even trying to hate on actress that plays Mia, but she is supposed to be playing the hottest girl in school? Umm.

The movie was dreadful.

I have no interest in watching a movie about a young gay person coming out when the lead actor is straight. This movie is for young girls.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 17, 2020 11:32 PM |
Thought this came out Friday. Will have to start watching I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 18, 2020 1:45 AM |
Been reading that apparently most of the season has the "gay" main character trying to get with that Mia girl or something? Also that the straight lead actor sucks at intimacy with guys, like Kevin from Riverdale.
No thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 18, 2020 1:53 AM |
I just watched the first episode and I think the actor playing Victor overacts in his initial scenes with guys. He seems to swoon at every guy he meets (plus Mia) and I don’t think it supposed to come across that way...
But he’s cute and the show is definitely going a different route than “Simon.” This season was filmed for Disney+ and is only rated TV-14, so it’s definitely for the kids, but next season is all Hulu. It won’t be Euphoria but it won’t be held back by being on a platform aimed at families.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 18, 2020 2:57 AM |
So you guys object to a straight guy playing a gay guy, but are probably all for gay guys playing straight guys. Hypocritical?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 18, 2020 3:01 AM |
I've watched the first couple now and it is true that it starts off focusing on the lead trying to date a girl r19, his male love interest is on the backburner.
Also I get it is a device to connect it to the movie, but the idea that Simon is off in college and attentively replying to this kid who blows up his DMs several times a day makes me laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 18, 2020 3:02 AM |
One thing I noticed is that the actor who plays Victor's friend Felix kind of reminds me of Dylan O'Brien. Or at least he just reminds me of Stiles.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 18, 2020 3:03 AM |
The dorky, hyperactive best friend is a well worn trope r23. Whether it is Seth in The OC or Stiles in Teen Wolf.

Certainly yes, R13, the highly dongful frontalism one expects from mainstream US-born films about shy gay teens. You'll be struck by the casually frank servicing of the football team by Victor's buddy Nicky, while Victor guards the door to the gang showers wearing the [italic]Taxi zum Klo[/italic] t-shirt he shoplifted from a thrift shop in the big city.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 18, 2020 3:23 AM |
Few episodes in, and I wish they'd drop the whole Mia subplot. I mean, I know kids struggle with their sexuality but I just want him to get with a guy.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 18, 2020 3:33 AM |
I watched the few first episodes. I like it, but they could have cast someone better for Victor's mom. Ana Ortiz is annoying as fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 18, 2020 4:16 AM |
OK, why do they go with the Simon isn’t in the city the weekend Victor spontaneously decides to take a bus there to NYC only have him show up at the end of the night? Was it just to build tension if Nick Robinson was going to show up at all, or did they have such limited time with him that was one of the few ways they could cut down his scenes? And I must say he looked like he’s really aged since making the movie, like now he’s late 20s.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 18, 2020 4:29 AM |
The whole Mia subplot ruins the series.
Grade: D-
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 18, 2020 4:52 AM |
Just a few minutes in and I'm loving it already. And Ana Ortiz will always have a special place in my heart for her roles in Ugly Betty and Deviant Maids.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 18, 2020 5:07 AM |
Same R22. The only way I would've given 2 shits about getting DMs from some random kid from my high school when I was in college would be is if I was trying to get some on winter break.
The guys are cute and the story is sweet.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 18, 2020 6:03 AM |
I've only seen the first 4 episodes and I have say...I LOVE IT! This show is so much different than Love Simon. It's actually funny! Yeah. It's kiddie but what did you expect from Disney. Also, Michael Cimino is a better more charismatic lead than Nick Robinson. Although I am a Nick fan, I have to admit that he bombed in some scenes -most rememberable the "I Like Your Boots" scene. CRINGE!
I agree that the actress playing Mia the most popular girl in school probably should be more a Miss Teen USA type although her portrayer is fairly attractive. I just can't understand why Mia is so popular when she acts more like a loner.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 18, 2020 6:10 AM |
The romantic rival is...not cute.
And the awkward best friend is no Adam Brody on The OC.

R34 The "I like your boots" scene was SUPPOSED to be cringe. He was trying to flirt and failed miserably.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 18, 2020 7:54 AM |
OMG. The second I gave the show a second chance I loved it.
I think I was mad because I read Nick Robinson who I loved in movie was going to narrate the series like he did the in movie then I realized how Nick was going to be in the show.
Now my only complaint is the music not being up to par with the movie.

I swear, if not all the roles are played by pink-haired, badly tattooed genderqueer pansexuals, this show is literally responsible for all the 10,000 trans women of color who are killed EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!
WHY DO THEY MAKE SHOWS ABOUT GAY MEN WHEN WE KNOW THAT WHITE GAY MEN ARE LITERALLY WORSE THAN HITLER AND THE HOLOCAUST TOGETHER? THEY KILL TRANS PEOPLE EVEN MORE THAN JK ROWLING! TRANS LIVES MATTER!

I was almost more interested in Lake and Felix getting together than anything with Victor and Benji. This is probably because Bebe Wood has apparently decided to make her career as a supporting player in shows about the gays.

I know it’s a TV show, but everyone at this school is so creepily overinvolved in Victor’s life. Also, like two days into being at a new school and he’s on the basketball team, got invited to a house party, has the attention of the popular gay guy and the popular girl and is handed a job he didn’t even finish applying for.
This is giving me Pose vibes — a show that is completely averse to putting its characters through any real adversity.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 18, 2020 10:40 AM |
I haven't had time to watch it yet, but the lead is very cute (who cares if the actor is straight as long as he plays relatively convincingly), and it's a mainstream-ish show about a gay (bisexual?) teenager, so that's a tiny step forward. It's probably not perfect, but I'll take a show like Love, Victor over any TV show that is not explicitly about LGBT characters any day.
Hopefully, I'll manage to binge it on the weekend.

I don't mind it so much r28. I think because it resonates with me. I dated a girl in highschool even though part of me knew I was gay. You almost want to believe that maybe you aren't gay, and it does get your family and friends off your back.
I would assume a lot of gays can relate to it.

Are the voiceovers at the end of episode 6 and the beginning of episode 7 continuity errors? In the former, Simon says that it seems like Victor has realized he isn’t attracted to Mia after the failed hookup, but in the latter, Simon is asking how everything went and if they fucked. Just wondering if I missed something...
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 18, 2020 6:45 PM |

It's sweet though.

It's quite a quick binge. 10 episodes and each is less than 30 minutes.
It's very nice. Felix is the new Stiles (from Teen Wolf). Love that goofy sidekick.
The scenes where you see Nick's face (in the episode where Victor goes to New York) must've been filmed on a different day than the ones in the club. The guy entering the club with Victor is a stand-in for sure. You don't see Nick with the other actors in the club together in any frame.
Of course, Tommy Dorfman is a guest star. It's not a gay teen drama show without him showing up at some point. LOL. Joke aside. Love that guy.
I thought the show made a good point that you never find the right moment to come out to your friends and family individually. And the timing really sucked with Mia.
I think George Sear, as Benji, is cute enough. Lucas Gage, who played Benji's boyfriend, on the other hand looked like a bloated corpse. What was up with that?

When I saw the credit I also thought what’s up with that? Many people get an executive producer credit but only a few people just get a producer credit. According to IMDb Chris was busy before the crisis.
I love the cast especially the mother. My only complaint Mia and Benji being hotties are a slight problem. Both very good looking and talented but very short. The way you talked about Benji’s boyfriend you would think he was hideous. He’s okay.
The show is all about couples but my favorite is Felix and Lake. Yes it is a soap opera but a good one with cliffhangers that make you want to binge. I should have gone to work today instead I’m going to watch whole season.

Did anyone else have trouble following the jump from him looking at ticket prices, to suddenly being in an apartment in NY full of strangers? I rewound a few times thinking I missed something, but it was the same. He's looking at prices, episode ends, then he's in NYC in an apartment full of people he doesn't know, with no explanation of why Nick isn't there. It wasn't until later when Nick runs into him on the street and explains why he wasn't there. Also, I know most of us probably got into clubs when we were underage, but that part was stretching believability a bit.

It was fluff, it was light, it was definitely targeted at young kids in high school and yet I enjoyed it. I think Michael Cimino is beyond adorable. And he is 20 in real life. In fact, I liked the cast pretty much. Hated the parents, but the kids were fine. The guy who plays Benji reminded me of a young Michael Pitt. His entrance was cool. Victor is standing there first day of school, and ba zingo!

I think making him Latinx and most likely Catholic and I guess Southern and from Texas was a good call in him having a more layered complications in coming out than white boy Simon had. And I’m glad they included the scenes with the Grandfather freaking out about Benji and his boyfriend at then party and even the father’s last minute quip about the little brother. Those actually made some tension and fear of coming out for him. He is a modeled as the best little boy in the world, which I feel we haven’t seen in a gay protagonist in awhile upping the ante.

I just finished the ep where Victor runs from hooking up with Mia. So Benji and his guy have been dating a year and he is just now realizing that he is a free spirit ho' that doesn't care about serious relationships? A year is a long time, in real life they would have already had the conversation where he says he doesn't believe in monogamy a couple months in.

Does the show make the Emmy deadline? The recent announcement of each category having 8 slots it be maybe able to sneak in for Best writing, Best Series and I was impressed with entire cast but the standouts are the mother and Mia even though didn’t like her subplot.

Hence me bringing up the new 8 nominees in each category 108. I know most people thought it was kid’s stuff but I liked it.
I’m all for diversity if it’s well cast and well written. A group of friends must have one of each including transgender. All couples are 99 % interracial. Love Victor was perfectly cast. I liked the actress playing Mia very much but I wonder why the first one cast was replaced.
Someone upthread said the father was a hot daddy but I looked at him close I bet he isn’t that old. I hate it when someone has a great face and hides it with a beard.

I have to say this show reminds me of both the reboot of One Day at a Time and Party of Five in that they reengineered it with Latinx, but I don’t especially get the feel that there are real Latinx show runners or dominant writers in the writing room. What do others think? And also for that matter how well are gays represented in either of those two groups? I’d feel better if Nick Robinson was actually gay for earning his producer credit or that Greg was still an executive producer.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | June 19, 2020 4:14 AM |
I never watched the new versions ODAAT or POF but this show I thought to myself the characters of the family reminded me of Latinos I work with.
It is all well and good to and good to want to hire Hispanics and gays behind the scenes but that doesn’t always mean the best will get hired. A good writer would do research.

r115 If they are they probably don't used Latinx as an identifier - in a recent poll most of Latinos/Hispanics most didn't even know what the term meant and preferred Hispanic or Latino (or Latina). The new term is overwhelmingly used by white college kids as it developed in academia first and is common in college settings. You can tell it came out of a small segment of academia and who knows if it eventually displaces the traditional gendering in Romance languages. I don't really have a problem with it because it does solve an actual problem and isn't just some PC annoyance - it come in handy if you constantly have to used Latino/Latina concatenations but it isn't something that developed organically from that population. Hispanic seems to have almost replaced Latino/a in many communities (Chicano is more of a historical reference at this point though it is still used by some Mexican Americans who came of age in the 60s) so Latinx may be a short term solution to a problem that solves itself.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | June 19, 2020 4:52 AM |
Count me in as one of those surprised by how delightful this actually is. I just finished episode 8 and it really couldn’t be a more perfect example of how to do a TV spinoff of a movie right. I guess Nick Robinson got a nice pay day with that producer credit in exchange for coming back. As someone said, the “twist” about his advice coming from a family of gays was quite moving.
Also the “Lock her up” joke when the family is playing Monopoly made me laugh HARD.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | June 19, 2020 5:03 AM |
R118 One can bet that while they may have some Latinx writers, it’s unlikely that they are Colombian American ones. I wonder why that particular ethnic/cultural background was chosen. If I remember correctly I think Michael’s family is from the PR. I don’t know about the other actors in the family?

Just finished it and it was a pleasant watch. Sorta the perfect escape for these days. But the continuity is a mess! Mia plans a Friday night date for them to have sex. Victor runs into Felix who says it’s Friday night and that’s when he and his mom play Cataan. Cut to beginning of the next episode and Victor is talking to Mia by her locker in a bustling school hallway and says “I’m sorry about last night.” So I guess Atlanta has school on Saturday...?
by Anonymous | reply 125 | June 19, 2020 6:08 AM |
Except for the fact that they had the episode with Saturday detention where Lake was complaining about being at school on a Saturday.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | June 19, 2020 6:16 AM |
Yeah, there were a lot of times where the timeline didn’t gel, like Mia’s party was on a school night? And when they take the espresso machine in on Saturday to be fixed, they’re going to be able to just pick it up on Sunday without making any special arrangements, or Benji hearing the guy say “why didn’t you come get it last night?“ And the bus ride to and from Atlanta fitting into one weekend? They should have made it a least a Monday holiday weekend or the start of spring break to make it plausible.

Don’t get me wrong I love male nudity in my gay entertainment but in Love Victor it wasn’t needed. The actor playing Victor is very handsome but he does look 16. Someone said he is 18 so I guess it’s okay to lust after him. In the credits he is walking wearing wearing a tank top looking sexy but I don’t recall that scene in the series.
I must have missed that part with the roommates are all giving Victor advice. Even though it’s only one that is a common theme among recent gay movies to have a bunch of drag queens to act like fairy godmothers to coming out young gay man. I don’t care. I’m not going to nick pick I loved it and hope it runs for a long time and it makes Nick Robinson a lot of money. He deserves it.
We are going to have a long time to ponder this but how do you think his mother and father will react? I suspect not very well and Victor will be living with his best friend and his hoarder mother who conveniently live next door.

There is a lot of homophobia in Hollywood. Many straight or gay actors think if they play gay it will hurt their career. Harry Hamlin thinks his career was hurt by Making Love. I think he is wrong. Was he as successful as Tammy? No but he has worked pretty consistently afterwards. Take Jake and Heath. Heath with his performance in Brokeback and even with Nicholson and Oscar winning Phoenix playing the character he will always be the ultimate Joker. Jake has also done some interesting things and is playing a Marvel villain. Still people think playing gay hurts their careers. Also gay men think they will not be the most successful acting job they can get the leading man roles. Women gays are another story. Women kissing women is a big turn on. Men not so much
When the father says he hopes his son isn’t gay that rang true I remember I was talking to a group of straight men who didn’t know I was gay( more than 10 years ago) one of them acted like if his son was gay that would be the worst thing.

Madden's not playing the gay character. There are two, one played by Brian Tyree Henry and another played by Haaz Sleiman. I'm not sure if the former is gay (although he doesn't appear to be confirmed straight either) but the latter is out.

Can I tell you something that might help you feel better? Or not. My father loves the movie Patton. So every Memorial Day when we get together for a family picnic, we end up watching it. I had no idea that the 761st Tank Battalion was an all Black division under Patton's command and they fought in Europe under him? Like the scenes in the movie where he is marching to the rescue of the 101st Airborne, those soldiers? Were all Black?
Here's another example: Oliver Stone made a movie about the World Trade Center Attack on 9/11, and the cops and people who survived...or not. Specifically there were two cops who were pinned down under the rubble, (One was Nicholas Cage) and thru some quirky miracle, some guy traveled to NYC to help, and he went down there and found them and rescued them.
So what, right? Well, in the movie, the guy is white. But in real life, this actually happened and he was a veteran and he was BLACK. So I hate how we get erased and ignored and other people think they can be us. But we aren't the only ones and it happens all the fucking time.

But if that happened today there'd be outrage. But not for gay people.
There was even an actor who joined in calls that disabled roles should be played by disabled actors - and who then took gay roles in film and television without anyone pointing out the shittiness of him standing for one minority group and then screwing over another. Every other group seems to be listened to except gay people - when we usually then get idiots asking "so you think only straight people should play straight roles huh?"

He is all right but I wouldn’t call Victor’s interest the breakout star at all. I think the sidekicks of Mia and Victor are but Lake needs to do something with her hair.
Would the above snobby poster please explain how this harmless good hearted rare positive gay series he called ‘pablum ‘ offended him on so ‘many’ levels ? Did you watch the whole thing? I mean I kinda felt like you at the first 20 minutes gave it another chance and loved it..

Have to admit I loved it.
It was sanitized and cheesy, and maybe it didn’t have enough gay actors in it, but it had heart like crazy and a plot that was predictable yet not. It moved quickly, and although at the beginning I wanted at least some shirtless scenes, the hot guys were enough. The characters were well-drawn and genuine.
The actors playing Victor and Benji are cute af and sexy, and I fangurled when they kissed. It’s no Euphoria, but I’d rather live in this world anyway.
Really looking forward to season two.

He claims he is straight, but he has a gay cousin..... But with that face and that body, there is no way he has not been tested...
I watched it twice. It doesn't hold up. The first time I watched it with a couple of friends, the second time by myself. I think the series suffers from the lack of actual gay cast members. Cimino is gorgeous. But he is sort of wooden. He's very awkward in the scenes where he actually has to BE Gay.
And what's Mr. "I'm Straight, but I have this Gay cousin " going to do when it's time for real sex? Are they going to show them in bed? Will this be Brokeback Mountain without the anal? Because that scene at the end when Mia catches Benji and Victor was Alma catching Jack & Ennis all over again.
And the scene with the guy in the toilet? Andrew? He comes out of the stall after Benji and Victor's awkward conversation? How cliche is that? So predictable. Almost anyone could have written this. I definitely don't like Victor's father. He is totally not believable.
His wife has an affair with his boss? And now they're living together?I get that he beat up his boss, but what happened to the wife? She gets to keep giving piano lessons? And Victor gets to get in Grandpa's face and tell him off about his Gay friends and Daddy lets it go?
That family birthday party was lame. In real life Victor would have invited his girlfriend and maybe his buddy Felix to dinner, then they bail and go out.

I just realized that in the first episode they introduced the black assistant principle, who was in the movie as the musical director, and set her up to be Tony Hale’s counterpart for Victor. But then they didn’t explore that any further. Hale was really a good comic relief for the movie and I think having that relationship for Victor too would have been helpful in the series. I wonder what happened, did they film it but leave it on the cutting room floor? Because why introduce her and not follow through?
by Anonymous | reply 226 | June 20, 2020 11:02 PM |
R226 Most likely she was only available to film one episode due to scheduling conflicts with filming Insecure. They obviously wanted an anchor with the movie but felt it wasn't needed for the entire series.

I'm on E3, skipped the other comments to keep things a surprise. They keep calling Victor hot, but gurl please he's a 6 at best. The mean basketball jock is hot as fuck. He should have been lead, but they wanted this movie to be more down to Earth for basic bitches.
Mia is a nice character, but she seems like a loner for such a popular girl.
The off-brand Seth Cohen (Adam Brody as another poster called him) is hot enough. I don't get why forever horny Victor is passing up on that local ass.
The show is fine, but the Victor actor is so stilted and talks in that Disney Channel stutter that Disney girls usually use when talking about guys. It's annoying when guys do it.

Re: R225: Fuck Polygon and their fucking tranny loving asses with a spiked butt plug from hell!
You know, this show is just fine. It's a nice and uplifting little show for gay boys and men. For fuck's sake, it's an inoffensive, easily digestible, charming romcom for gay men (and straight women, I guess). It's not supposed to be transgressive!
If they want a tranny or 'queer' show that breaks with 'homonormativity' (what is this even supposed to mean? It's frankly insulting to dismiss the lived reality of many gay men in this way...), they can fucking create one themselves. Except, they cannot because nobody is fucking interested in their gender studies bullshit and it doesn't sell. Instead they whine once again, paint themselves as the oppressed victims, and hope for that free ride that they get by emotionally blackmailing everyone.

R229, no, in 2020, this show is not "just fine." That's the problem. This reminds me of the well meaning white Liberals who made Lifetime movies about Black people and were so completely off and clueless and offensive and they just didn't get why their seemingly harmless shit was offensive. I want a rom com with real Gay people and I want it to be more grounded in reality than this bullshit. Being Gay and in the closet in high school is hard. THings might be better or more accepting now, but there are still religious assholes and others out here who feel like we are offensive and evil and perverts. Cynics can't deal with harmless, feel-good drama entertainment. They are obsessed with finding something to hate about it like characters not being played by out and proud gays, because everything has to be controversial and fit the "outrage! It's an outrage!" mold for social media's outrage culture. I mean, even cartoon comedies are not safe anymore (haven't been since the Apu controversy in The Simpsons).
by Anonymous | reply 247 | June 21, 2020 1:51 PM |

R245, so watch 'Moonlight' instead of trying to make 'Love, Victor' something that it wasn't meant to be. I'm glad that we have both, I really am, but not everything has to be one thing. It's perfectly okay to have a stereotypical, feel-good gay high school drama. If people wanna see a different story, there are tons of 'gay-themed' movies out there, exclusively produced and acted by gay men.
Now, if you want to argue that there aren't enough stories like 'Moonlight' out there--yeah, I kinda agree. There should definitely be more content like 'Moonlight' in my opinion... And if there's a market for it, people should definitely start doing indie flicks about what is interesting to them or relates more to them. Eventually, this type of story may gain traction and find larger interest in the mainstream media. But please don't expect that you can just shove something down the throats of an audience which they don't want to see in the first place.
People who watch 'Love, Victor' want something exactly like 'Love, Simon.' An inconsequential, sanitized, little fantasy love story that warms your heart while allowing you to escape reality for a few hours.
by Anonymous | reply 249 | June 21, 2020 2:09 PM |

Well, if people want to see it (series in R251), more power to them. I'd rather poke my eyes out than watch it, but my preferences are not the yardstick for all.
We'll see what is more financially (or even artistically) successful in the end. I mean, 'Looking' was what many gay man say they want in a TV series, but it wasn't that successful. At the same time, straight romcoms don't really represent straight lives accurately either. So, apparently, in order to have a successful TV series, not only do you need to address a broad audience (i.e., a coalition of various subgroups), you also have serve them the type of fantasy that they secretly want, even if it uses the same old, tired tropes. That's just how it works.

by Anonymous | reply 255 | June 21, 2020 3:00 PM |
R245, you miss the point. If the collective experiences of many Gay men are not this joyful, fluffy experience, then watching something like this hoping for a little honesty isn't going to work. I have nothing against romantic comedies, or light superficial treatments, but I found Victor to be dishonest at it's core. The only "moment" that seemed true to me was when Felix brings Lake to see his apartment. Not saying everything has to be fraught. Just looking for some honesty. The young actor who played Benji was pretty good. He was believable to me when he talked to Victor about the hard tie he had. I enjoyed the scene when Simon's boyfriend took Victor to the basketball court to shoot hoops, and then told him all those guys were Gay. The fact that not one actor was Gay in RL irritated me a lot. I don't need every single actor to be Gay, but unless you're a really good actor, you aren't going to carry it off well. Because the story is ABOUT being Gay. Trevante Rhodes isn't Gay. Ashton Sanders isn't Gay. But they were able to make it work in Moonlight. (Not sure about Andre Holland.) My complaint is about honesty. Being True. And I found this a dishonest, misleading rendering. That's my point.

I don't think a Gay audience is what Disney was aiming for. I think this was another attempt to innoculate. They want to spoon feed non Gay audiences about how "Normal" it is to be Gay. So they create this benign environment (High school!!) and this comparatively innocent environment and they even have Grandpa there to represent. He talks about how uncomfortable he feels and doesn't want Aidan to see two men kissing. Then Granny makes her "things have change so much!" speech. That was done with intention. The target audiences for this were straights and kids ten and over.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | June 21, 2020 3:10 PM |

HBO viewers are clearly disappointed. Please, there is currently airing an excellent adult HBO/BBC co-production that is unapologetically "non benign" gay, as defined by some posters here.
by Anonymous | reply 260 | June 21, 2020 3:21 PM |
What’s that, r260?
by Anonymous | reply 261 | June 21, 2020 3:24 PM |
I get your point, R256, but let me ask you a (rhetorical) question: how authentic are romcom or romantic drama movies in general? They aren't at all, all of them are highly artificial, even for their main audience--straight people. Again, it's all about the fantasy, about the wish fulfillment, and the escape from reality.
R258 is also right. 'Love, Victor' is very deliberate in mainstreaming 'gayness' (at least an uncontroversial, ideal version of it), while serving it in a very easily digestible format that appeals to the widest audience possible. It's actually quite good at that. Narratives of normality and conformity ('oh, he's just like us, just a tiny little bit different') are quite powerful tools for fighting negative stereotypes. This narrative of normality can build a good foundation onto which then--once it's firmly established--more non-mainstream narratives can slowly build upon.

Simon’s version he was handsome and white upper middle class great everything maybe a dad who made gay jokes but loved his son. The scene with the father telling him he loves him makes me cry every time. I think Loe Simon was a nice little love story. From what I understand today’s young people think it is no big deal to be gay.
Like Victor said his story is totally different. We don’t know how his parents will react and I don’t think it will be good. Victor maybe living with his best friend and hoarding mother soon.

I sometimes wonder who the gay men on DL think they are.
Anyone with half a brain would know something like this or Love Simon would not be aimed at gay men over the age of 25. Their target audience are the same audience shows like 13 Reasons Why, Degrassi or Riverdale have. You may enjoy watching those shows, but you are not their audience.
This shows main audience is teenage gays and girls.
Shows like Looking are for us, and they FLOP. The only way to make a gay lead appeal to broad audiences is to make him like Simon and Victor.

It's because of gay / LGBT allies gay / LGBT content became popular and mainstream in the first place. The main audience of Showtime's Queer as Folk? Women, better known as Fraus. Will & Grace? Fraus. Why did Looking fail? It wasn't Frau enough. The entertainment market is pretty much saturated to the point where people don't bother with every show featuring gay or LGBT characters.
The original Tales of the City was a moderate success, because gays were desperate for anything gay related back then and took what they could get.
Without our allies us gays would still be a niche market, or demographic, at best. And why is that? Because "This doesn't reflect me and my life! KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!".

I don't think the audience for Queer as Folk in the UK was fraus. That was a genuine popular hit, by Channel 4 standards. The scene where Stuart drives the jeep through the window of the car dealership appeared on one of those Best Scenes in TV History clip shows.

Queer as Folk only really had one season and a two part sendoff. The "second season" miniseries was Russell T Davies' idea. Channel 4 wanted another, full season. Looking got a second season despite the fact that the first wasn't a success. That situation is not comparable with Queer as Folk's.

Queer as Folk had a successful first season (good ratings). Looking did not have a successful first season (poor ratings).

What was important in both Love, Simon, and Love Victor is that the lead actor, the GAY kid was charming and likable. That seems to be the formula. In my high school experience, in the late 70's, the Gay kid was "odd" and reclusive, and practically friendless. Well, maybe a couple of friends but basically they all avoided calling attention to themselves. They definitely didn't make the team in sports, they definitely didn't come to school dances. They tried very hard to be invisible. I was lucky because I had siblings to go to school with and their friends were cool with me. I was not out then.
I liked Looking a lot, but know I would’ve found it unbearably boring if I wasn’t gay
I am gay and I found Looking boring. I vaguely recall the creator gave an interview in which he basically said they wanted to make a show where essentially nothing happened, so it reflected real life, rather than feeling like a TV show.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | June 22, 2020 4:45 PM |
Jonathan Groff deserved better than Looking.
by Anonymous | reply 307 | June 22, 2020 4:50 PM |
Looking was very European. There was no drama, it was just the camera dropping in on a day in the life of gay men. Of course Americans like things big and soapy, like all of the Ryan Murphy garbage, so it never stood a chance.
by Anonymous | reply 308 | June 22, 2020 4:51 PM |
Looking had the worst thing for a show: an idiot protagonist. Groff deserved better.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | June 22, 2020 4:54 PM |
Andrew Haigh's has that understated style, he tried to use here after it was so successful with his big screen debut "Weekend". It worked for feature film, but just doesn't work for long from.

Most people expect their entertainment to be larger than life characters going through larger than life events. Even when it comes to Reality TV and documentaries (like, you know, Netlfix's Tiger King).
The "but where are the shows about us average people having average but real life problems?" posers (yes, that's not a typo) can't make a show about regular gay people a success that lasts.

Honey, that's called a documentary.
"Story" requires characters who want something (motivation), face obstacles, and make choices under stress to demonstrate growth (or lack thereof). Most of what we have now is melodrama, not drama or true "story" as practiced by real authors and screenwriters.

by Anonymous | reply 326 | June 22, 2020 6:59 PM |
Please know, I am happy that this show exists and I've criticized and analyzed characters form a number of shows on this site, gay and straight.
r303 Victor was not likeable in this season.
1. He basically walks around his school looking more confused then the kid from 13 Reasons Why. He doesn't engage in a meaningful way with anyone at all, yet suddenly becomes popular.
2. He's fortunate enough to have honestly good people around him in school. Even though he doesn't appreciate the effort they put into making his experiences at that school better (his "friend"./Mia/Coffee Boy). They shuffle him along as he lies his way into breaking up a relationship and destroying an innocent girl's heart.
3. He's not hot, so all this fawning over Victor at that school makes zero sense. We know what is considered hot these days (check Tik Tok) this boy is at best cute, but he's breaking hearts like some Helen of Troy.
4. He's not a team player. He acts all cocky on the basketball court (one of the few times I like him), then he gets fouled out of a game and storms out of the gym instead of supporting his teammates. All this public because mommy fucked some dude! He's a complete DIVA!
5. He also calls out his parents as if he knows anything about being an adult and remains oblivious to his own destructive antics. I'll let that slide since he's a teenager.
6. He straight up disses Simon's welcoming friends. It is 2020, even homophobes should be better apt at gracefully telling someone off. Not to mention how he treated the coffee boy and his man at the birthday party. He shouldn't have invited coffee-boy if being gay around his grandfather was an issue. But maybe the boyfriend wasn't invited and I missed that part.
7. His sister is sulking around the apartment friendless, yet Mr. Popular Victor won't even take time to check in on his sister or inviter her to anything. Oh, but he lOvEs HeR!
8. He's just simply ungrateful little shit that cheats on his girlfriend and tries to feel up his taken friend. Add fuel to the file, he makes out with him in public outside of his school on a bench. Like, really bitch? You gotta be that messy?
That said, it was an enjoyable watch. Don't take my comments too harshly it's all in good fun.

by Anonymous | reply 328 | June 22, 2020 11:42 PM |
You can't create drama when everybody acts smart and responsible. Where should the drama come from when nobody struggles with any issue and everybody is honest and doesn't keep any secrets?
Judging fictional characters for being stupid and irrational is really condemning yourself for not grasping what it is that entertains most people: Watching other people getting into trouble by being stupid and irrational.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | June 22, 2020 11:55 PM |
Victor himself is bland. His "girlfriend" Mia is one of the most boring characters ever written. Felix and Benji were hot.

by Anonymous | reply 332 | June 23, 2020 2:42 AM |
Some of you are just looking for reasons not to like this show. Some other people just like to snub popular opinions. I have a so called friend who won’t even give Parasite a try. The year of God’s Own Country and Call Me By My Name before watching he knew he would like GOC better. When he finally did I could tell he wasn’t impressed. Recently he swore he liked it better. What kind of person lies about their opinions?
by Anonymous | reply 333 | June 23, 2020 2:52 AM |
Couldn't possibly be that people have different opinions from you, could it? No, it must be an act, because no-one could possibly have a different opinion from R333.
I think we can all guess why you had to say "so called friend".

by Anonymous | reply 335 | June 23, 2020 3:10 AM |
like for example it clearly says Victor becomes popular for the sole reason the most popular girl in school likes him. Now Mia is furious with him that might change. Despite being a little miscast I think the actress playing Mia is very good.
Not think the actor playing Victor is not hot or even cute is beyond me. It’s like calling Brad Pitt a dog.
by Anonymous | reply 336 | June 23, 2020 3:15 AM |

Mia hated being around other people more than Felix’s fat, hoarding mother.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | June 23, 2020 3:59 AM |
Not to mention it's a demand of television. The popular people are never surrounded by a massive crowd. There's one or two friends who have an actual character, maybe one or two silent extras to fill out the entourage, and that's it. You can't have groups of 8+ hanging out all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 340 | June 23, 2020 4:04 AM |
Keiynan Lonsdale preferred pronouns are tree and they.
by Anonymous | reply 342 | June 23, 2020 5:54 AM |
R342 I'm still pretty sure he wasn't completely serious about that.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | June 23, 2020 5:58 AM |
The Mia character was very typical of upper middle class African American girls. Very blase' and reserved. Not loud or flashy but quietly stylish. In Atlanta, there are a lot of girls like that. Their parents are doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and definitely big shots within the historically Black Colleges community. You have Spelman college for women, and Morehouse college for men and they are almost cult like in terms of their philosophy and behavioral standards. Very elitist.
Now the elitists don't shout it; they are simply like Mia. Extremely polite. Kindness itself. Never call attention to themselves, never. Impeccable manners. They have gone to all the right schools and are usually second or third generation college graduates. So I'd say they really nailed the character of Mia. And in the real world, Mia and Andrew would have been the couple. No way she'd have ever done more than smile and say "Hi!" to Victor. Lots of "new" people have come to Atlanta. It's truly an international, ethnically diverse area. But the stratification of African American high society is very real.

Here is another overwrought "think" piece on this show - boy the professional "queers" really hate this, even though it goes out of its way to not be "white" the show still cant get a break from these critics. The greatest offense is apparently being gay and not fluid/bisexual/pansexual! The author is a queer theory professor at some rando college so no surprise there...

by Anonymous | reply 350 | June 23, 2020 2:12 PM |
Well, we'll see how Season two goes. He just came out to his parents. I'm betting his father is going to be awful. Just awful.
And if Mia truly was so popular, then he has pissed off a lot of people at school. And Andrew is not going to make life easy for him on the basketball team if he is even still on the team. All he really has is Felix...who is dating Mia's BFF, Lake. So I can see Felix as the go-between trying to patch things up. Hey this shit writes itself.
I can see his classmates giving him a really bad time. And then, when things get really bad for poor Victor, Mia will come to the rescue and tell the kids to back off, she forgives him and they need to stop being assholes. And that's the end of Season 2. Oh. Benji is there too. I mean can't have a movie about a Gay kid without the other Gay kid.....

I was hoping Mason Gooding’s jock character was secretly in love with Victor after they first met, and Gooding kept asking about Victor and Mia. They went the predictable route by making him het and in love with the primary female character. My version would have been more interesting haha.

Next season of Love, Victor should be about him joining the wrestling team only to be sidelined by injury. He takes up with some society sugar daddies and gets passed around like a joint at Whitney's. He presses eject on this wild ride and joins the army. Oh, and he webcams his spread cheeks. There's lots to work with there, no?

If they are looking to add some gay actors to the cast (which I hope they are), they can pick up Jeff Davis' sloppy seconds. Froy Gutierrez or Andrew Matarazzo would sense as a new hussy at Creekwood.
by Anonymous | reply 368 | June 23, 2020 5:18 PM |

Won’t be hard to overshadow him. Every other guy on the show is hotter than the actor playing Victor.
Simon should avoid future invites to his apartment, Victor is a known cheater and home wrecker.
For S2 can they have some gay fad bonding moment where Simon and his hot dad (Josh Duhamel) end up wrestling with Victor’s father (who can be a former wrestlers). Ideally, this can be shot with the daddies as oiled up.

The problem is, when we first see Benji walking into the school, stops to get a drink, runs his hands thru his hair, and he has that sort of sexy strut, I'm looking for his bulge...but there is none. And his legs are skinny not muscular. So in effect he has not much to offer. Victor is lean and muscular and he's taller than Benji. I suspect once they get things sorted out Benji will bottom.

R392 Unlike your porn fantasies, gay high school virgins aren’t just jumping into anal sex.
13 Reasons Why actually got this right this season where they had the newly out gay kid (played by Miles Heizer) nervous about having sex with his boyfriend.
by Anonymous | reply 393 | June 24, 2020 4:08 AM |
I generally liked the season - especially since they were initially targeting a Disney audience - but there were certain plot developments that made no sense (other than to maintain internal plot consistency) but the oddest part was Benji's weird flip out over the kiss and how something so innocent required Benji to cut off all contact with Victor because why? It isn't like Benji's boyfriend had some moral objection to monogamy (remember he was the one that basically said the best part of being gay was basically that you could fuck anyone anytime anywhere and seems to be looking for any reason to dump poor Benji and move on to some college level bareback orgies) so his total freakout over the kiss made no sense (and he obviously has the hots for Victor so you know they would have at least traded blowjobs all night long and then maybe have some regrets in the AM). Hell, Benhjis boyfriend would probably have loved to pop that twink virgins cherry just to spice up their relationship. But of course, the Disney plot demands that Victor stretch out that bearding for the big "betrayal" where poor clueless Mia doesn't realize that her "boyfriend" wants cock for the season finale. I would have hoped that if they had started out at Hulu then this gay boy dates clueless future fag hag cliche would not have been necessary - and the whole escape to NYC episode where Victor is required to learn that gays can be basketball stars as well as annoying club fags (and of course with a tranny cross dresser thrown in) wouldn't have been necessary as some required "movie of the week" moral lesson in faggotry...

by Anonymous | reply 396 | June 24, 2020 4:53 AM |
R394 The reason why Benji flipped out is because he believes in monogamy whereas his boyfriend doesn't. It's to contrast the differences between Benji and his boyfriend but also at the same time show the similarities between Benji and Victor. Benji's wants to freely be able to fuck other guys in an open relationship while Benji and Victor are presented as "romantic types". Who have the added conflicts of them both being in a relationship with other people and wanting to do the right thing while also secretly longing for each other and Victor not being publicly out.
by Anonymous | reply 397 | June 24, 2020 6:56 AM |
Victor should have Jack Twisted Benji when they were in bed. : Pretend your asleep and fling your arm out to grope his dick. I mean. Benji was sending out all the signals. He knew "Call me maybe" was on Victor's phone, and he sings a cover of it? He's the one who volunteers Victor to go on the road trip. He shuts off his phone in the car when he gets a call from Derek. And on the night of his attempt to lose his virginity, Victor shows up at the coffee shop well after closing to look for Benji who happily lets him in. So they both know that their "special night" with their alleged significant other is a bust. Hell, Benji's running away to another coffee shop telling Victor they need to avoid one another is because Benji knows he is attracted to Victor. He wants to get with Victor. And how the fuck could he ignore all those breathless stares? Victor is so obvious I'm surprised no one else noticed. Felix should have caught on right away.

OK. So the dynamics are set up for Victor to catch some serious shit in Season 2. He will catch shit from his father no doubt in my mind. He will catch shit from Mia's friends and classmates. And Benji may even catch shit because he and Victor get together. So there's going to be a lot of shit in Season 2.

This pretty much sums up how I felt about it. I like it but I feel guilty because it is pablum. I'm copying this from the OP's Guardian review post:
"The initial promise that this would somehow add a bit of grit to the Love, Simon template fades fast with Victor’s strictly religious parents softening within minutes and financial concerns disappearing with a similar speed. Making Victor a twinky, basketball-playing teen who finds friends instantly sustains the fantasy world of the movie but oddly, the homophobic taunts that Simon and his gay classmate endured have been entirely excised. Benji, Victor’s openly gay object of affection, appears to glide through school and the community at large without resistance from those around him, a utopian ideal that’s sweet but unlikely. It didn’t need to overly focus on the hardship but a refusal to deal with it in much detail over 10 episodes (bar one easily settled scene with Victor’s grandfather turning his nose up at Benji and his boyfriend) feels like cowardice.
It’s one of many decisions that makes Love, Victor easily digestible and solidly entertaining yet lacking. "

Love Victor has a RT rating in the 90s.

I’ll probably get shit for this but I couldn’t watch Victor without thinking every time he was political commentator Neera Tanden. Eeks.
Also. I know they are kids but the acting was terrible. Ok. I still watched it.
by Anonymous | reply 404 | June 24, 2020 3:06 PM |
I thought the four sidekicks were fine. I mean they were acceptable. Mia, Andrew, Felix, and Lake. Felix was especially good. Mia did a good job in her "Alma" Scene, when she discovers her boyfriend kissing another guy... But Victor was wooden. His father was fake. His love interest Benji was not much better. I loved Pilar. Mom was...ok. I loved kid brother Aidan, (great name for a baby gayling!)
by Anonymous | reply 405 | June 24, 2020 4:14 PM |
Hey I like Meera Tanden and actually Victor was very pretty. BEtter looking than Neera. Victor's problem is that aside from being pretty there was nothing there. He was..."nice."

I didn't realize until after watching that the actress who played Lake was the same actress who played the little sister on The Real O'Neils. She's really grown up but she's always been a good actress.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | June 24, 2020 5:55 PM |
His skin tone is striking. So rich with zero blemishes. Just gorgeous.
r405 you're right, the father was fake. They are struggling to get by, but their mom was a housewife? In, 2019/2020? How did she not go stir crazy being cooped up in that little apartment all day by herself?
S2 should have the mother, sister, and little brother move back to TX. Mom should shack up with the boss and live her best life. Dad should manage the dating scene. Eventually, a girlfriend will help him soften his views on his son's love of cock. Once Vicor is outed to the school he should develop his own little group of gay and straight friends. The show can expand beyond his dull storyline.
by Anonymous | reply 408 | June 24, 2020 6:03 PM |
I see Daddy moving back to Texas. He pretends he's "modern" but he's not. He'll live with his parents because he can't afford not to. Pilar might want to go but her character is too strong to be written out of the story. You watch. Andrew will emerge as the peacemaker/hero guy.

I think they'll jack one another off first. Touching and kissing, and if they really want to be honest, they need to generate some heat. These are guys. 16-17 years old. The hormones are raging! The way it ended really irritated me. Two straight guys kissing. No heat. Then the "I'll call you tomorrow." Sheesh. I don't think either of them even grabbed a thigh.
by Anonymous | reply 415 | June 24, 2020 8:55 PM |

Loved Handsome Devil. Fresh idea the two lead characters both gay don’t get together.
by Anonymous | reply 420 | June 25, 2020 12:47 AM |
To be fair on this show the straight couples just kiss also. Mia lost her virginity at a ‘weak moment’ and at another low point offered to have sex with a teenager with raging hormones but was turned down. I forget the guy Victor is attracted to. Felix? What a name. I assume since he has a boyfriend who is older they are having sex although it isn’t mentioned.
by Anonymous | reply 421 | June 25, 2020 12:53 AM |
I think that's an odd framing r421. It was assumed by all characters that Victor/Mia would be having sex, and the fact that they weren't was used as proof of Victor's gayness.
Even in the season 1 that was made for Disney the show the show doesn't present a world that damn chaste. It did still embrace that teenagers have sex drives and that is normal.
by Anonymous | reply 422 | June 25, 2020 1:07 AM |
I also loved Handsome Devil, but it's a terrible title that has nothing to do with the movie.
And it was a fresh idea that the two gay leading characters do not wind up together.
Also, I liked his teacher, played by an out gay actor whose name escapes me, and I like the teacher's line at the end when he introduces his boyfriend to the school principal and says, "he's my fella."

They better improve the writing too. And the directing. I mean some of the dialogue was such bullshit. I get it. THis is an upper middle class high school with a lot of nerdy smart kids. But you can take nerdy too far. When Victor and Benji talk the dialogue seems so stilted and strained. I liked Mia, but I loved Lake. Now she had some good lines.
by Anonymous | reply 439 | June 25, 2020 2:03 PM |
The old losers on this site are showing their ages in these comments.
This show is not geared toward you. This show is for TODAYS youth. Your time has past, move on.
And this show does not do anything wrong in how it portrays a closeted 15 year old. They usually get themselves a girlfriend and try and fit in with the straights.
There was no "straight washing". For some reason people think all gay kids do is fuck. Most do not even have anyone else to fuck so they troll apps like Grindr at 15 to get fucked by much older guys and later in life resent their youth for this.
And to those of you who keep bringing up season 2 will not be filmed for Disney+, what does that mean? It will still be a TEEN SHOW, the way the film was a TEEN FILM, geared 100% toward teens. It is a show about 15 year olds.... but in your twisted minds it will suddenly be filled with nudity and sex? God, I feel sorry for some of you.
by Anonymous | reply 440 | June 25, 2020 2:31 PM |
Anybody expecting sex on Love, Victor even without trying to conform to Disney standards are going to be disappointed.
by Anonymous | reply 441 | June 25, 2020 2:33 PM |
This is not an adult series. This is a show geared toward 13 year old girls and gays. Anyone who expects sex and nudity is deluded and so desensitized that they think everything is porn.
by Anonymous | reply 442 | June 25, 2020 2:35 PM |
You realize when people make comments about rimming and the like they are jokes? Are you able to detect sarcasm?
Shows geared towards teens do have sex btw, obviously this show will never be Euphoria, but look at normal teen geared series on WB/CW.
by Anonymous | reply 443 | June 25, 2020 2:47 PM |
All in all though this must have been a hit for Hulu right? I mean it wouldn’t have been comparably on Netflix or Amazon Prime, but Hulu most likely is over the moon with the press this show has been getting and most likely respectable numbers? Also, they don’t have the kind of teen oriented shows that are so strong on the other two streamers so it must fill a niche for them.
by Anonymous | reply 444 | June 25, 2020 2:59 PM |
I’d like to fill Victor’s niche
by Anonymous | reply 445 | June 25, 2020 3:02 PM |
They talk about sex on the show. They just don't act like they ever do anything, or even get turned on except for the comedic antics of Felix and Lake. Benji mentions dating and having sex with girls. Mia fucked Andrew. She wanted to get something going with Victor but there was no chemistry. None.
I was criticizing the dialogue. I think it's a legitimate criticism. I'm no old fart. I find the dialogue on this show obviously written by people who have no idea how teen agers talk to one another. I get it. The Salazars are from Texas and they're religious and so maybe they aren't as up on things or informed or sophisticated and worldly as someone like Mia or Andrew.
Victor said a couple times that it meant a lot for him to be accepted. Another time he said he didn't want Mia to think he was a loser. He was definitely punching above his weight class. But he tries. He took her to a art exhibit opening for a first date.
Benji had to know he was gay, and despite Benji protesting, Benji was flirting with Victor from the moment he noticed his "vintage Converse shoes." And really, "Call me Maybe?" And at the disastrous end of their special evening they end up together playing with the espresso machine? Turning off the phone in the car when Derek calls? They always noticed one another, always made eye contact.
Victor did have a fleeting moment of hotness on the basketball court in that first practice against Andrew. Even had a little strut going. I just hate that the writers made the character so bland. On the plus side, having this series take place at a high school, ala Glee is smart. There are a lot of secondary characters they can introduce into various storylines.
But the series is going to be handicapped by not having a Gay Victor. There have to be more love scenes. They have made so much of Victor's virginity, at this point, something has to give. So what if I engage in speculation. I'm curious just where they take the storyline, and how they carry it off. Michael Cimino doesn't seem to have the acting chops to go with his good looks.
by Anonymous | reply 446 | June 25, 2020 3:19 PM |
Teens in high school have an excess of emotions. These kids couldn't even fake passion well. Bad directing.
by Anonymous | reply 447 | June 25, 2020 3:20 PM |
Euphoria is an HBO series not actually geared toward teens. It’s a show about teens for 18+.
You’re comparing apples to oranges. Euphoria is not in the same category as Love Victor, which is in the same category as Riverdale, Degrassi and Glee.

Why do people keep calling them 17? Victor says he is a Sophomore at the beginning and then episode 5 is his 16th birthday party. So they are 15/16. Pilar is 14.

I wanna see some passion. I wanna see Benji mash Victor against a wall and grope him while he gives him a hickey. YOu would know Victor was gay just by the fact he was never sloppy or disheveled. He was fastidious. Neat. Always bathing. Every time he walked into his house he'd announce he was taking a shower or changing. LOL!
by Anonymous | reply 457 | June 25, 2020 4:07 PM |
Benjis backstory was that he got a DUI before coming out, and he has been out for over a year given that is how long he was with his ex. It would be nonsensical for him to be a sophomore.

During class scenes we see Felix/MIA/Victor/Lake have some classes together. Benji is never in their classes. So he is most likely older.

R463 he does. Idk where you live/are from (they aren’t the same) but Chicago’s gay scene is mostly VERY vanilla but cute and fun like Simon.
NYC gay scene has turned too vanilla in recent years but it’s still very interesting and diverse and DARK, overall.
LA gay scene is 💯 superficial and all about looks and money.
Simon would not fit in NYC or LA. He belongs in Chicago, DC or Seattle gay scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 466 | June 25, 2020 6:32 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 467 | June 25, 2020 6:34 PM |
If we were going to assume a Cali gay scene for Simon he would be best in San Diego. Again, super white and vanilla but pretty and laid back and fun.
And Bram is mixed but very vanilla like Simon. Simon likes it that way. Good for him. But NYC isn’t him. They really had to go the most stereotypical route for him.
Does OC have a real gay scene?

Victor lives in an upper middle class suburb but lives in the poor part of town r470, not some small farm town.
Gay shows and films really should end the trope that gays need to move to NYC or LA to get anywhere. That used to be the case, but hardly in 2020. Simon flocking to NYC seems a bit ridiculous, especially when he is from an Atlanta suburb, and Atlanta has a large gay scene now.
by Anonymous | reply 472 | June 25, 2020 6:53 PM |
Shows and films also always push the "its NYC, no one gives a shit" about two men being affectionate in public but that is not true.
by Anonymous | reply 473 | June 25, 2020 6:54 PM |
A show, which takes place mainly in a small town, uses NY usually as the stark, cold contrast where people "disappear" and not have much of a local community and neighbors know each other and are on friendly terms. The exceptions are gay themed shows and movies where guys have their new family of diverse, like-minded friends.

And the inner city of Atlanta has a booming gay scene. Why not take a weekend trip into Atlanta and experience the gay scene instead of traveling all the way to NYC?
Simon also would not be in those gay clubs.

Atlanta doesn't have the same profile as NYC. "Love Victor" isn't a show made for Southern audiences.
by Anonymous | reply 477 | June 25, 2020 7:36 PM |
I guess I'm the "PAssion" troll, but I gotta say. As I think about it,I can't lay it all on Michael Cimino's wooden performance. It seems like no one had any passion. Not for lust or for sadness or for anger. We had Felix and Lake acting like rambunctious puppies, we had Benji & Derek arguing about infidelity. We had Mia coldly cutting her father's fiancee. But very little passion. Mia was so laid back she sat on her bed and I expected her to tell Victor to drop trou. it seemed almost clinical. Most of the kissing was enthusiastic, but no heat. So I have to blame it on bad directing.

Atlanta, like Nashville or Oklahoma City, have new gay scenes. They do not have the gay history or mythology NYC or LA have. I get it.

Hey a lot of people make the trek to NYC either for College or for work opportunities. They do it for the experience of living there. NYC is romanticized. But many quickly discover it is not for them. It happened in our own family. I have two sisters. One went to NYC and never looked back 20 yrs ago. The other went there for grad school then lived there for 3 yrs and hated it. Left. Lives in a Chicago suburb . When R462 said Simon belonged in Chicago I understood instantly. Yes. He'd fit in wonderfully there.
Michael Cimino was perfect as the sheltered, earnest Latino kid needing to fit in and be accepted. But next season he will have to loosen up or he will bomb.

To me,I love the history of NY. The cultural history as much as the social history and the actual American history. I see NYC as a collection of unique neighborhoods. It is a world unto itself. It is not to be compared to other big cities in the US. All big cities have similarities. But only on avery superficial level. Chicago has its own history. But it doesn't compare to NYC. They are no ways the same. We have great cities all over America. But New York City is our heart. I visit often. I have family and friends there. But I know I could never live there. It has too much...muchness.

The thing is that a lot of kids grow up repressed, as in hide their true self and their true feelings from everybody. And then they finally leave home and move to the big city and it's like a kid in a candy store for the very first time. They go from one extreme, the repressed state, to the other extreme, releasing the raging homosexual they are. And that one wants to make up for so much lost time. And in that state they don't listen to fear, reason, common sense or proper etiquette.
This is even more evident with closeted Mormon teens.
And I am sorry to say, but it's a very human thing that you overindulge and overreact when you have denied yourself something you want so much for a very long time. Of course, after some time the new freedom has lost its shine and people enter the "OMG, what have I done????" phase which, if they are lucky, just leaves them mortified or, if they are unlucky, reveals to them that they are now living with an incurable STD or a crippling addiction to drugs or alcohol.

No matter who you are, a change of scenery requires an adjustment period. Moving from a small town to a big city (and vice versa) can be a culture shock. And no matter when you come out a huge weight is off your shoulders and it takes some time to adjust to that.

They left TX after the father found out the mom was having an affair with his bosses boss and beat the shit out of him. They moved to Atlanta, but not the inner city, a suburb. The same one Simon lives in, but in one of the apartments in the "poor" part that Abby lived in.

But yes, the cost of living is considered average.
by Anonymous | reply 517 | June 25, 2020 11:02 PM |
Well you can consider all you want. The Southwest side is "up and coming," but East Atlanta Village, Grant Park, Reynolds Town, Candler Park, Inman Park and Buckhead, where I live, is expensive. Rents are ridiculous for what you get. I had 750 SF in a newish building and paid 1900. Plus utilities, parking and trash. Atlanta is expensive.
If people think they're moving to the South where historically the cost of living has always been lower, you're in for a rude awakening. It's not low. Now maybe in the far suburbs things like rents are lower. So places like Brookhaven , a near suburb, and Sandy Springs are getting prohibitively expensive. And I know things are a bit lower in Smyrna, Alpharetta, Marietta, but then the suburbs are growing fast because we have ridiculous traffic.
BTW. I don't know anyone who refers to "inner city." about any part of Atlanta. The Southwest side seems to have crime moreso than other areas, but Atlanta is fully integrated. Yeah, lots of gentrification going on, but at least the Metro Atlanta area is integrated.

Sure. But you have places like New York metro, Bay Area metro, DC metro, Boston metro etc bringing up the average. Places like Mississippi, Kansas etc bringing down the average.
How it works out, so places like Atlanta fall in the average.

A one bedroom apartment in a new building in a hot neighborhood of New York is going to cost you *way* more than 1900 r521.
You can find an apartment in New York for 1900, but it is not going to be the same as your Atlanta apartment.
It's not that complicated. It's just numbers in black/white. Atlanta is expensive for the South, but it is not an expensive city objectively.

Victor said he wanted to fit in. He said he wanted to be accepted. He discovered after his ferris wheel ride with Mia, he was popular. His basketball teammates were accepting. The Benji walked into his life. So he is terrified. After he made a pass at Benji on their work trip overnight, he rushes out into the hallway of the motel and starts crying. He admits he is scared and doesn't want his life to be so hard. And yet. He can't ignore it or deny it. So as much as he may have wanted to stay in the closet and rationalize why he makes that decision, he has the fact of Simon and Bram, and he has the immediate fact of Benji of the bedroom eyes, and the soft smile and the flirty ways. Call me maybe. Yeah. it's obvious Victor and Benji are going to catch a lot of shit next season. because Mia was popular. And if she is pissed off at them she and Andrew will make life hell.

Victor’s home life won’t be smooth like Simon’s was. Simon makes it a point to mention how scared he was with super liberal pro-gay parents, so imagine what someone like Victor feels.
Simon knew his parents would be accepting and was still scared to tell them, so imagine someone who knows there is a chance they won’t, especially their father.

You know, one thing missing from the discussion. When he was in NYC he told Bram and the roommates his parents were religious and he was really worried about them dealing with him being Gay. When he was driving with Benji he asked him about his relationship with his father.
And no one brought up the possibility that he might get thrown out, or even that his father might kick his ass. I had to make a plan. I got thrown out. I had to pack my shit and leave that very day. So I had to make sure I had someplace to go. I know Simon told him he would be there for him. But Simon is in NYC. Unless maybe Simon's parents show up to help out next season? Did he think he was going to go home announce he was Gay, then just go to bed? Really?

We object to (allegedly) straight actors who can't kiss another male on screen without looking fake, no intimacy or chemistry. We find it even funnier because half of these actors are actually closeted gays or bisexual yet can't do their jobs. As for gays playing straight we have so many in Hollywood to count, so it is what it is.
Brandon Flynn had real chemistry with Alisha Boe, their making out and their sex scenes were really hot and intimate. Why can't these losers follow suit?

How about a masculine gay or bi actor or even straight actor who actually doesn't mind kissing another man and who has chemistry with them?
This is the problem, the masculine gays and bi actors just don't want to play gay characters.

Read my post r523 I said for "the whole season" they had 10 episodes they could have cleared that up in 5 episodes. Victor is a fictional character and the writers can do with him what they choose to do. You don't need a whole season to keep a character closeted especially when your intention is to bring him out anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 556 | June 26, 2020 12:02 PM |

The actor playing Victor's dad is Colombian, and his mom is Puerto Rican, so that is what they made Victor's ancestry. Victor has a Puerto Rican flag hanging in his room, and he know his Dad's family was said to be from Colombia.
Michael Cimono himself is Puerto Rican.

Actually, it makes sense to have Victor stay closeted all of season one. In reality, it would have made sense to keep him closeted until college, but if not, keeping him in the closet for season one makes perfect sense.

I thought Victor's character was believable. He tells us he's the family "fixer." the peacemaker. He hates conflict. He also tells us he wants to fit in, he wants to be accepted, he wants to be liked. Victor is not the guy who is going to call attention to himself. He hates rejection. The scene where Benji tells him he's transferring to another job, and they need to stay out of one another's way, Victor is crushed. But as for the kissing, I agree with the criticism. But maybe it's to be expected from kids who aren't experienced in general.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | June 26, 2020 1:04 PM |
It was his first kiss with a dude and there was no lack of passion on Victor's part, the lack came from Benji, who is in a relationship.
by Anonymous | reply 572 | June 26, 2020 1:14 PM |
What is interesting is that neither Love, Simon nor Love, Victor went for the mean high school girls clique trope. Love Simon's villain was the nerdy kid who blackmailed Simon into hooking him up with a date with his friend. And in Love, Victor it's the basketball jock threatened by the new guy (Victor).
Both schools seem to have a rather nurturing environment where bullying doesn't seem to happen. And most of the drama comes from the leads fully expecting these friendly and supportive environments (In Simon's case also his uber Liberal parents) turning toxic the moment they come out. In a sense it's like with 13 Reasons Why where, in season one, the female lead was convinced that her only way out was suicide when she had a loving support system (like Clay), but she chose to completely ignore it, so she could favor her exit through suicide.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | June 26, 2020 1:15 PM |
Benji had his own struggle to make his relationship with his boyfriend work. I think what bothered him most about the kiss was that now his boyfriend wasn't the only one to blame for the relationship not working. And Benji wanted to make sure that if the relationship ends it's not his fault.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | June 26, 2020 1:19 PM |
r573 its not both schools... it is the same exact school.
There was bullying in Love, Simon from the two straight guys who bullied Ethan and then made fun of Simon in front of the whole school before the drama teacher (now VP) tore them up, and ignorance from the then Vice Principal who assumed Ethan and Simon were a couple because they are both gay.
Victor does not have many bullies because he is friends with the bullies throughout the show. If he did not start dating Mia he would have been bullied by Andrew and co.
