Donald Fagen of Steely Dan

What a charismatic gargoyle. Tell me more about him.

Gay band name, painfully straight fan base. Right???

by Anonymousreply 1June 17, 2020 1:43 AM

Wasn’t the band named after a large dildo from a W S Burroughs novel?

Just listed to Do It Again on my run this morning. I requested that song as my walk on music at a recent work presentation. I totally relate to the Samsara wheel mentioned. And, of course, a large dildo.

I don't know much about Steely Dan, though I've been curious about the gay strain in their music (and of course in their name)....I mean, "Riki Don't Lose That Number" is still one of the gayest songs I've ever heard on the radio. What was the deal? Was either one of them gay?

I love, love, LOVE Steely Dan. "Rikki Don't Lose that Number" was written about Fagan attempting to seduce his professor's wife, if I recall...Fagan is a great songwriter, and the Steely Dan catalogue is full of brilliant songs which are filled with quirky humor and varied themes.

I still love "Dirty Work." Aja was the last album of theirs I bought.

by Anonymousreply 6June 17, 2020 2:35 AM

It was originally "Ricki (or Ricky, I forget) Don't Lose That Number" and the record label forced them to change the spelling so it would seem more like a girl's name.

God Steely Dan just leaves me cold. It's sterile as hell.

by Anonymousreply 8June 17, 2020 3:17 AM

I love the doc on the making of Aja. Fagen and Becker are pretty witty guys.

Huh?

David Palmer who sings Dirty Work, was the lyricist on Carole King’s song, the Jazzman.

by Anonymousreply 11June 17, 2020 3:40 PM

Fagen has a bit of a lisp when he sings, no?

by Anonymousreply 12June 17, 2020 5:16 PM

I love Steely Dan...FM, no static at all...

My very first album that I purchased at 12 years old was Can’t Buy a Thrill. I was mesmerized by the hookers on the front of the album cover.

Steely Dan - a continent of the mind!

My favorite Steely Dan song is "Time Out of Mind".

I really liked almost all of their original run of albums.

They did OK stuff later on but they really should have left well enough alone.

Fagan's solo albums were good, too, especially The Nightfly. (That album cover is also the only place where either of the Dans looks remotely fuckable.)

He is very hot. Or was. Now he looks like a tarantula.
