What dark, murder mystery shows are you watching right now?
I'm having that first-world problem of decision paralysis with all the shows on all the streaming services. I'm hungry for something dark, and involving -- a prestige murder mystery / detective series or perhaps just a very dark, character driven show in which, well, murder happens even if it isn't the primary plot point. Akin to... The Killing, The Missing, Breaking Bad, Ozark, Broadchurch (season 1 only), True Detective, Prime Suspect, Happy Valley, The Fall, Sharp Objects, The Night Of.
Not interested in over the top, pulpy, stuff like Killing Eve. Or anything that goes too far into sci-fi or fantasy. Nor any light-hearted children-of-Agatha Christie British countryside murder shows. Subtitles not an issue -- totally open to foreign language series.
So... based upon that list I provided... what should I be binging? Open to Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, Amazon etc.

You can not beat True Detective or Breaking Bad.

Well, yes, I can make peace with that, R1, but it's time to move on and enjoy something else.

Ozark is so fucking good, but I just finished the most recent season. I never did see season one, so I’ll probably give that a shot.
I’ve been watching some of American Horror Story just for Finn Wittrock. It’s not a great series by any means.
The Versace series was much better (though it didn’t have quite enough Finn for me).
In the unscripted genre, I really enjoyed the two recent Ted Bundy docuseries on Amazon and Netflix.

Netflix's The Search which is about a missing girl in Mexico City. A police investigation centric drama.

Giri/Haji (Duty/Shame) on Netflix has so far been excellent. A Japanese show, but the action so far has been in London, with Japanese, British, and American actors. The dialogue is both in Japanese and English. I'm on the fifth episode and totally hooked.

The way I wrote my plug for Giri/Haji makes me sound like a moron. In my defense, I'm hella stoned right now.

Shetland. Brilliant show. Also, beautiful cinematography.

Dark, on Netflix is a fantastic German series!

I wouldn't say Shetland is [italic]dark[/italic] dark but I've only seen the first three seasons. It's very compelling though and it is gorgeous, makes me want to visit.
Wallander was dark. I don't understand Scandi-noir. You live in a socialist paradise and you're all morose alcoholics.

I watched Collateral with Carey Mulligan on Netflix last week and thought it was excellent.

I've enjoyed all 3 seasons of The Sinner. You might like it.

I'm on the second season of Secret City on Netflix, an Australian political thriller starring Anna Torv and Jackie Weaver. It involves multiple murders and espionage. The acting's good, as is the music and the cinematography (what do you call that for TV series?) If you enjoyed Justified, there is a fun surprise in the casting.
I also enjoyed Collateral.

Ooh. Good suggestions, thanks, y'all. I ended up randomly starting The Mire, a Polish series set in 1980s Cold War Poland about a hardened newspaper reporter pursuing a murder. I'm watching in the original Polish with English subtitles. I don't understand how people can enjoy watching these shows dubbed -- I want to hear the intonation in the original actors' voices.

La Mante. A French thriller series that is akin to Silence of the Lambs.

The TV series Hannibal is excellent - it just dropped on Netflix this week. Dark, gory, with beautiful cinematography/set design. Mads Mikkelsen is amazing as Hannibal and Hugh Dancy is excellent too. Added bonus: There is much UST between the 2 male leads.

The Danish/Swedish series, "The Bridge", and its foreign counterparts, French/British "The Tunnel" and the American/Mexican, "The Bridge". All are great.

The best I've watched this abominable year.
The Victim (2019)
A mother seeks the whereabouts of her son's killer after he is released from prison, unleashing a series of events that surface tragic memories and unexpected consequences.

r1, "Breaking Bad" is not in this category--it is not a murder mystery show.

Again, not really a murder mystery show.

OP, have you seen "River"? It's very good; with Stellan Skarsgård and Nicola Walker. I think it's still on Netflix.

"Vienna Blood," set in turn-of-the-century Austria and pairing an old-school policeman with a young psychiatric intern who introduces him to the budding science of forensics, was pretty good.
I was hooked on "The Tunnel" at episode one, but then Spawn of Satan, Spectrum, decided to skip to episode four and not air episodes two and three in order. I have all the broadcast episodes on DVR but remain Spectrum's bitch if I want the sequential storyline.
Did I mention: I HATE SPECTRUM!?

I’m with you r10. I hate Scandinoir.
Op, you can try Babylon Berlin. It’s a weird cross of historical and mystery. Very creepy and good.

I know I’m in the minority, but I preferred season 2 of True Detective. More characters in the mix and some really poignant (unrelated) moments with the motorcycle cop and Colin Farrell’s character.

R24 - I liked S2 of True Detective and it was certainly better than the majority of police procedurals, but it still holds a distant third place to me behind seasons 1 and 3.
R22 - that sounds fascinating, thanks!
R21 - I have seen River! While, at times it did strain credulity, I really enjoyed it as well!
R19 - Yes, but R1 was only responding to my original post in which I -- perhaps rather cheekily -- asked for recommendations on dark, murder mystery shows, but then broadly defined it as both traditional police procedurals and mysteries and also dark, character-driven shows in which murder happens, but may not be the primary plot point (like Breaking Bad, Ozark and Bloodline).
R18 - Victim looks good and I like Kelly MacDonald. Will make a note of it in case I subscribe to BritBox.
R17 - Thanks! 'The Bridge' looks exactly like the thing I'm after. Definitely adding that to the list!
R15 - Ditto, this French one looks good, too!
r13 - thanks! Loved Anna Torv in Mindhunter and Jackie Weaver's brilliant. Definitely checking that out.

I watched 3 seasons of Ozark a few weeks ago and then I watched 3 seasons of Bloodline. WOW! Neither are really murder mystery shows but there are plenty of murders, tension and shocks.
Both were fucking brilliant! Both started off a bit slow and then became riveting. They'll go down as the best TV shows for 2020 for me.

I love "Suburra: Blood on Rome," an Italian crime series.
Inspired by a real-life political scandal, "Suburra: Blood on Rome" features a fight over development land in a coastal town near Rome. The church, political figures, members of organized crime, local gangs and real estate developers all collide in the battle, with the lines between the legal and the illicit being blurred. The various entities involved are all on a quest for power, but not everyone can achieve that goal. The series is based on a book of the same name.

Thanks for the many recommendations. Gonna check them out. I'm running out of things to watch. I personally like spy/crime/thriller genres.
Recently watched Condor, Ozark, High town, counterpart, devils, alex rider, killing eve, defending jacob, gangs of london, deep state

The British, "Ripper Street" and "Whitechapel" (the latter does have a whiff of supernatural, but the lead makes up for it).
The French Belgian, "La Trêve". As mentioned above, "La Forêt" (The Forest).

I know you're asking for shows, OP, but one of the best murder mystery movies I ever saw is True Confessions with Duvall and DeNiro. It's worth the time if you want a break between bingeing.
Everyone else who has posted: Thanks for the great suggestions!

French show on Netflix called Black Spot/Zone Blanche is very good OP. Quite dark, well acted and currently has two seasons. The Australian show Harrow is pretty good two. It has humour but has a very dark story arc running through each of its two seasons.
