Gay Nazi's Teenage Lover
I remember reading an older book about the Night of the Long Knives in which the Nazi, Edmund Heines (pictured below), was described as being found in his bedroom with an 18 year old Nazi.
The teenager and Heines were dragged from their hotel and killed.
I wonder went through the kid's head. Was he thinking he was dying for a glorious cause? Was he shrieking hysterically?

Heines was openly homosexual. A sodomite. It's weird to think about the culture that allowed him to have such a long rise in fascist circles before someone (Hitler in this case) had had enough of the sodomites. Heines was a murderer. A psychopath. The "kid" would have known who he was. Difficult to speculate on the "kid's" motivation and reactions at the time of death.

Heines was not killed due to being gay - he was executed along with a number of other higher-ups (including his brother) due to Hitler's paranoia.

Read "In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson to truly grasp the nightmare and paranoia of living in 1933/34 Germany. This particular incident is also addressed, among many others.

R2 Your interpretation is valid. The SA was loaded with homos. Certainly the SA had become inconvenient and unnecessary - homosexuality not the leading inconvenience. But Hitler totally used homophobia to help justify the murders.

There was a big gay scene in Germany before Hitler rose to power. Many gays were out.
And then Hitler scapegoated Jews, Gypsies, the handicapped, and gays and stuck them all in camps

Don’t be so overly dramatic about it, R22. You’re saying it’s improper English, and R14 gave alternative facts to that.

What came as a genuine surprise to me was Roehm. Despite being a fat gay pig, contrary to what one might think, he was no stock character from Nazi central casting. He had a really keen intelligence. There's a good article in The Journal Of The History Of Sexuality about him called "Only the Real, the True, the Masculine Held Its Value": Ernst Röhm, Masculinity, and Male Homosexuality".
I remember reading that all the young adjuncts working under him in The Brown House, were dazzlingly handsome with "melting gazes". Hitler knew he was homosexual for years, but was a cynical pragmatist. When Hitler bawled him out once, someone standing outside the Reichchancellery said it was so loud and sustained the bronze window frames began humming.

Roehm believed in a masculine ideal for gays, despising fem types. He would have fit in with some of the Queens here.

I second the recommendation for [italic]In the Garden of Beasts[/italic] by Erik Larson. The U.S. ambassador to Germany, William Dodd, decried Germany's abandonment of the rule of law during the Night of the Long Knives. I've thought of him a few times while watching the recent administration's disdain for the rule of law.
The book is accessible history, covering an intriguing time of history. And Dodd's daughter created her own intrigues.

[quote] due to Hitler's paranoia.
It wasn’t Hitler’s paranoia, it was done to cleanse the Nazi Party of the Brown Shirts, Hitler’s thuggish street fighters, because the army insisted that if Hitler were to take power, the Brown Shirts had to go.
Hitler acceded to this because he had established a new fighting arm of the party — more disciplined and intelligent and MUCH more sinister, the Schutzstaffel (SS).

Years ago I went to interview a jewish concentration camp survivor about gays in the camps. So I arrive at the house for our appointment, ring the bell, no answer. But I see there's a big kind of garage warehouse in the back. So I walk down the driveway and the doorway is open. I step in. It's a small factory of some kind. Lots of lots of warehouse tables, and on them, wire racks. And resting on the wire racks, newly plated, dozens upon dozens of fake nazi medals. Nazi medals for motherhood; nazi Iron Crosses. Nazi everything! Suddenly he appears: a really tough looking old guy, and ushers me out. I was clearly not meant to see this, and he seems quite put out, and says something like how he likes to make money from old enemies. One of those surreal moments in life where you can't make this shit up.

There were homos everywhere. The SA had very violent thuggish street-fighter homos who scared the regular Army homos so they had to go to give Hitler some respectability.

Michel Tournier's The Erl-King was clearly born of an aryan wetdream. That scene where he gathers all the blond hair of different shades and makes a pillow of it to sleep in its scent is crazy sexy. His memoirs are good too. Visiting Verushka's old family estate.

The Night of the Long Knives illustrates one of the many differences between Trump and Hitler-- Hitler was wily enough to know when his own MAGAts, the Brown Shirts, were no longer useful and upgraded the type of evil thugs he surrounded himself with.
Trump's inner circle mostly remains the same, and if anything, gets less competent over time
