The Queen and Prince Charles both HATE smoking, and will not tolerate it near them. (In the queen's case, it has to do primarily with watching her father have a lung removed because of cancer and then losing him to it altogether when it invaded the other lung.) The Queen made Prince Philip quit before their marriage and Charles made Camilla quit before they moved in together.

Courtney Love was (unsurprisingly) a notorious chainsmoker for years—I saw her live in 2014 and she smoked throughout her performance (and this was indoors, in a historic theater). I think she's finally quit in the past couple years. Prior to that, the woman was a walking ashtray.

r59, yes. In an interview with Judge Judy, she makes a side comment about cigarettes and how Chris is too young and too good to smoke, but people used to smoke everywhere. Chris replied that he smokes all the time and would smoke while doing the news but he'd get fired.

An actor friend of mine who does it told me many actors naturally gravitate towards it because they love being able to do it on stage: it solves the problem of what to do with their hands.

It is amazing to me not only how many celebrities do it (when so few among the population still do it), and how 99% of them only do it in private.

I've never been a smoker, but when i was growing up even in the Eighties, it was a phenomenon that still pretty much crossed class lines. Now it seems it's something that mostly only poorer people still do, outside of a few industries like acting and fashion and publishing. And even with acting, the smokers who are successful mostly try to hide it from the public because it's generally considered tacky.
