Th e movie “10” is on TBS

Watching10 with Dudley Moore, Bo Derek and Julie Andrews and for the life of me I don’t understand what was the appeal of Dudley Moore. He’s not attractive, very hammy as an actor, so what made him such a star? Can anyone explain?

Since I’ve never seen it before, I’m waiting for the famous Bo Derek beach scene, but the movie hasn’t aged very well.

by Anonymousreply 80June 13, 2020 5:31 PM

Some of his acting in this is hammy but I think it was more of Blake saying "Dudley be funny. Be drunk and hungover as you are stumbling around the hotel."

But the scene at the piano is beautiful. And Dudley was very charming.

I watched this for the first time too and I have to say I thought Brian Dennehy and Dee Wallace were terrific in supporting roles. I found Dennehy so sexy in this. I loved how he got so close and intimate with Moore and Dennehy had such a sexy voice. And Wallace looked radiant. I thought she was way more attractive and interesting than Bo Derek.

Julie gave off major lezzie vibes in this.

He had a lovely perm in the movie.

[quote]but the movie hasn’t aged very well.

Are you kidding? It was awful at the time.

by Anonymousreply 3June 11, 2020 7:23 AM

[quote]Julie gave off major lezzie vibes in this.

It was supposed to be her chance at being adult and sexy.

She was awful in this.

by Anonymousreply 4June 11, 2020 7:26 AM

I think Pauline Kael made an observation that in one scene Julie demands to know if she was going to be made love to in a tone that would make the idea seem impossible.

by Anonymousreply 5June 11, 2020 7:29 AM

Dee Wallace would have been better as Dudley's long-suffering girlfriend.

by Anonymousreply 6June 11, 2020 7:32 AM

I saw this movie for the first time about around Xmas last year. Horrible. I'm not sure what I was expecting exactly - I remember a lot of talk about both Moore and Bo Derek when I was a very young kid (born in 1980). My father always spoke of her being the most gorgeous woman ever..bla, bla, bla. She is lovely for sure but styled so oddly and her "acting" is atrocious. Dudley is aptly named. I loathe the Arthur movies as well.

by Anonymousreply 7June 11, 2020 7:37 AM

I seem to recall there is a naked pool party with a lot of unattractive bodies. and Dudley Moore falling down a cliff or something. Blake Edwards loves slapstick.

by Anonymousreply 8June 11, 2020 7:38 AM

[quote] I seem to recall there is a naked pool party with a lot of unattractive bodies

Only unattractive male bodies. Blake hired various professionals porn stars as many of those party guests. Someday we might hear more about his casting sessions.

Me too.

Once the Americans imported him he lost the plot.

He was better in English films and TV (even then, not so great)

by Anonymousreply 12June 11, 2020 8:11 AM

Moore burst on the American movie scene in a well-received featured role in Foul Play, which was a hit starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase. He then got lucky when he replaced George Segal in "10" at the last minute. It was the surprise hit of the year and made stars out of Moore and Bo Derek. Moore followed that immediately by starring in Arthur, another surprise hit that was even bigger than 10. He received an Oscar nomination for Arthur and was one of the hottest stars in Hollywood.

It was all downhill from there. Moore never had another hit movie and in fact had a long string of box office bombs. His roles included a poorly received sequel to Arthur, and embarrassed himself as an elf in the critically panned Santa Claus movie.

He became ill with a degenerative brain disease and died in New Jersey at age 66 after losing his fortune and fame.

'10' is one of my favorite movie. I love everything about it esp the piano comp scene at the Las hadas bar. Beautiful song. Henry Mancini I believe.

by Anonymousreply 14June 11, 2020 8:28 AM

Sad story, R13. But he was married to Tuesday Weld for awhile, inexplicably. And he was hilarious with Peter Cook in "Beyond The Fringe" and "Bedazzled" and "The Wrong Box".

by Anonymousreply 15June 11, 2020 8:47 AM

He was also married to the beautiful Suzy Kendall....famous in England in the 60s.

Typical 60s London dolly bird.

I never thought he or Peter Cook were funny. Their comedy was puerile, bitter and nasty.

by Anonymousreply 21June 11, 2020 10:40 AM

"Micki and Maude" is interesting.

by Anonymousreply 22June 11, 2020 10:48 AM

OP Funny you starting a thread on 10. I watched again for the first time since its first release two nights ago!

I enjoyed it as much as I did back in 1979 (when I saw it twice at the cinema). Its aged well but is so politically incorrect today. It's basically a comedy about an older guy stalked a young 'virgin'.

Also, wasn't Dudley Moore married to Tuesday Weld at one point - what an odd match.

by Anonymousreply 23June 11, 2020 10:52 AM

So, r23, it's John Derek pursuing Mary Cathleen "Bo."

by Anonymousreply 24June 11, 2020 11:04 AM

I saw Foul Play, then 10 , then Arthur and bought into the whole 'Dudley Moore's a star" thing with the rest of America.

Then I saw Six Weeks.

And I was done.

I've never seen "10" but thought "Arthur" was one of the best romantic comedies of all time. John Gielgud was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 33June 11, 2020 1:29 PM

I saw Sam Jones in a grocery store near San Diego last year. Decently preserved but strutting around like, "Yeah, I'm famous but keep your distance."

by Anonymousreply 34June 11, 2020 1:43 PM

I had very low expectations for Arthur but I really liked it. I loved the chemistry between Dudley and Liza. It's also genuinely funny in parts. I'll check out 10 though I should probably keep my expectations very low.

by Anonymousreply 35June 11, 2020 1:51 PM

R35 Be warned as here is lots of female nudity in 10.

by Anonymousreply 36June 11, 2020 2:02 PM

R35, my boyfriend and I watched it a few nights ago. It had its moments, but it isn’t very overrated. And Arthur is just obnoxious in his drunk scenes.

by Anonymousreply 37June 11, 2020 2:05 PM

Dreadful movie. I remember it was one of the biggest hits of 1979. Some woman in our town got the Bo Derek braids (as we called them) and was even in the local paper for it. I was too young to go to R rated movies. I watched it when it came to HBO. My cousin and I were so excited to watch this R rated movie which got tons of press.

We both were disappointed and thought it sucked, because it did. I, too, never got Dudley Moore. I hated Arthur and everything else he was in. I never understood how he became such a big deal. He was one of those actors who the minute they come on the screen, I just felt instant dislike.

by Anonymousreply 38June 11, 2020 3:54 PM

Dudley's last movie was The Mirror Has Two Faces, which he was fired from because he couldn't remember his lines. Streisand had to call in Austin Pendleton to take over the role.

by Anonymousreply 39June 11, 2020 4:23 PM

I have fond memories of movies set in 70's LA. 10 was one of them because I heard it was naughty and I snuck in at 15. I loved it.

by Anonymousreply 40June 11, 2020 4:25 PM

I had totally forgotten Dudley Moore even existed, and he was a huge star when I was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 41June 11, 2020 4:44 PM

He dated the lovely and tall Susan Anton too.

by Anonymousreply 42June 11, 2020 5:00 PM

There was a line - cant remember it exactly - Dudley says he's jealous of his gay friends' relationship and his therapist says something like "You've reached the point where you're even jealous of two gays" - implying what a very sad state to be in.

by Anonymousreply 43June 11, 2020 5:03 PM

Dudley Moore was one of the worst actors ever. I doubt most people even remember him or his movies. Even his most well known movie Arthur sucked.

by Anonymousreply 44June 11, 2020 5:10 PM

Didn't realize there was so much Dudley hate.

Santa Clause: The Movie was a flop at the time but over the years it's become more respected.

by Anonymousreply 45June 11, 2020 5:18 PM

[quote] Even his most well known movie Arthur sucked.

& that stupid song's lyrics

Once in your life you find her Someone that turns your heart around And next thing you know you're closing down the town Wake up and it's still with you Even though you left her way across town Wondering to yourself, "Hey, what've I found?"

& especially:

When you get caught between the moon and New York City. I know it's crazy, but it's true

by Anonymousreply 46June 11, 2020 5:18 PM

Ugh, R46, I like Christophe Cross but that song fucking sucked! I couldn't believe how popular it was. It even went to #1 in the U.S.

by Anonymousreply 49June 11, 2020 6:17 PM

R46, can you believe it took four credited songwriters to come up with that crap?

by Anonymousreply 50June 11, 2020 6:27 PM

Loved Bette Miller as a presenter. It looked like she ad-libbed most of that. Unlike Oscars now, where everything is scripted and so flat.

by Anonymousreply 51June 11, 2020 9:40 PM

Blake Edwards did very well in the 70s because there wasn't a lot of slapstick comedy, especially by the 2nd half of the decade. He seemed to really be fulfilling a need there.

Dudley Moore was actually quite good at slapstick comedy, so the movie was pretty popular (just as Edwards's final "Pink Panther movies" starring Peter Sellers, which also rely on slapstick, were very popular). The problem was that unless Moore could do slapstick or play drunk (which he excelled at). he wasn't very appealing, so he didn't keep his stardom going for very long after "10" and "Arthur."

by Anonymousreply 52June 11, 2020 9:46 PM

I tried to watch Arthur recently. I didn't even make it to Liza.

Dudley Moore was playing intoxicated, managing to be cloying and deathly unfunny despite laughing incessantly at his own jokes. It was fucking intolerable.

by Anonymousreply 53June 11, 2020 10:08 PM

R9 Oh, my gosh, that picture! It's full of 1970s porn stars - Annette Haven, Serena, Candida Royalle, Jamie Gillis, Blair Harris, Jon Martin, David Morris, Constance Money, Dorothy LeMay...

Blake Edwards had Annette Haven recruit a bunch of her porn star friends to appear in the pool party scene.

by Anonymousreply 54June 12, 2020 2:35 AM

Well done r54. The only one of those porn extras I could name by sight was Dorothy LeMay.

And I don't believe for a minute Blake and probably Julie didn't sample the merchandise

by Anonymousreply 55June 12, 2020 3:02 AM

R54 Are they all still alive?

by Anonymousreply 56June 12, 2020 3:02 AM

[quote]Dudley Moore was playing intoxicated

He wasn’t playing - that was the way he was in real life. Apparently a real asshole.

by Anonymousreply 57June 12, 2020 3:03 AM

R56 From the people I recognize, the only ones who aren't still alive are Jamie Gillis, David Morris, and Candida Royalle.

And I can't believe Don Calfa is in that picture with them all with his cock hanging out! (Don is dead, by the way).

by Anonymousreply 58June 12, 2020 3:08 AM

R55 Annette Haven has said only wonderful things about Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews, but I also wonder what may have gone on after the cameras stopped rolling.

by Anonymousreply 59June 12, 2020 3:10 AM

I liked Dudley in "Arthur" and "Micki and Maude" .... but that's about it.

by Anonymousreply 60June 12, 2020 3:25 AM

Did Dudley do anal? Apparently he was addicted to sex.

by Anonymousreply 61June 12, 2020 3:34 AM

Thank you r58 I thought I recognized him but couldn't think of his name. Don Calfa cock out AND coping a feel.

by Anonymousreply 62June 12, 2020 3:49 AM

Dudley's most likable performance was in Foul Play. I think it was his first big role in an American movie and it made him a star.

by Anonymousreply 63June 12, 2020 4:39 AM

It was between Bo Derek and Tanya Roberts. They decided to go blonde and the rest is history.

Allegedly, a movie exec said that when Annette Haven was onscreen, the audiences would forget about Bo Derek.

by Anonymousreply 64June 12, 2020 4:43 AM

I moved into a house that had a vagrant VHS tape on the staircase. No one ever touched it. One night, after wine, I peeled back the cobwebs to revel a copy of Mickey and Maude. I put it back exactly as I had found it. As far as I know, it is there to this day.

by Anonymousreply 65June 12, 2020 4:53 AM

Wasn't he a very drunk presenter at the Academy Awards? Or maybe it was the Grammies.

I remember him saying something like "Up Where We Belong.... and we all know where that is."

by Anonymousreply 66June 12, 2020 5:03 AM

"10" was on TCM the other night, so I recorded it and watched it last night. I still think it's a great film - a great time capsule of the late 1970s. It's a little disjointed at times, and Blake Edwards' decision to add a lot of Pink Panther-style slapstick didn't always work, but the script was intelligent and the performances were all excellent. I do agree, though, that Julie Andrews' character was shrill and bitchy and completely unlikeable. A few other observations:

Bo Derek was truly stunning to look at. The first time you see her, when she's in the back of the limo in her wedding dress, she's breathtakingly beautiful. Edwards was right to cast her.

Sam Jones was even more stunning. God, he was beautiful! When he gets on his surfboard and paddles out into the ocean, his butt in his wet swimming trunks looks good enough to eat.

Porn star Annette Haven actually has a speaking part at the end of the movie in the final scene with Don Calfa, as does Constance Money at the beginning.

One of my favorite TV hunks of the 1970s, Doug Sheehan, had a small part as a cop.

The guy who played Robert Webber's boy toy was a hairy hottie. I looked him up online and was surprised to find that he got a law degree from Columbia in 1966 and had been a practicing attorney at the time he made "10." He still has his own practice in New York City and still looks good. He's 79 now!

by Anonymousreply 67June 12, 2020 12:06 PM

And to add to my observations from above, I also thought Brian Dennehy as the bartender was sexy as hell. I'd have sat at that bar all night and let him pour me drinks.

by Anonymousreply 68June 12, 2020 12:10 PM

Interesting story about the terrible song played as Dudley fights to keep a straight face.

The name of the amateur song to which George Webber (Dudley Moore) listens is "I Have an Ear for Love". Writer, producer, and director Blake Edwards told composer Henry Mancini to "Write me a lousy song - I mean, a real stinker".

Mancini once said, "There's no question about it - it's definitely the worst song I have ever written. In fact, every so often, a nightmarish thought runs through my head . . . What - heaven help us - if 'I Have an Ear for Love' becomes a hit?" Ironically though, the song was still featured on the "10" movie soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 69June 12, 2020 12:35 PM

R69 I loved that scene and Max Showalter singing that song with such earnest delight while he played his mini Wurlitzer.

by Anonymousreply 70June 12, 2020 1:41 PM

And Max Showalter was in Niagara (1953) with Marilyn Monroe and beautiful Jean Peters! A great pseudo-noir film...altho Marilyn is highly colourful as always.

by Anonymousreply 71June 12, 2020 9:31 PM

I loved Niagara. Marilyn was sexy and sinister in that one.

My favorite from Max Showalter, though, was his turn as Grandpa Fred in Sixteen Candles.

by Anonymousreply 72June 12, 2020 9:38 PM

Overall, I thought "10" was hit or miss funny, like Edwards' follow-up, "S.O.B." (1981), which really fizzled at the box office. As others have said, Moore's rising star, and brilliant marketing using Derek, made "10" a smash.

by Anonymousreply 73June 13, 2020 12:06 AM

Max Showalter was also the original Ward Cleaver.

by Anonymousreply 74June 13, 2020 1:46 AM

The original New York Times review included an decent amount of praise for Deborah Rush as the not-quite hygienist employed by Bo's dad.

I watched it last night (I posted the link to it on youtube) and was surprised how much I liked it. Once it gets to just Dudley and Bo it totally fizzles though.

But the opening is great with that long scene with Dudley and Julie in bed arguing about the word 'broad'. Really funny. I enjoyed the bits with the neighbor and his porn parties, and Webber as his gay writing partner and his boy toy, then the singing minister who beats the dog when the old lady server farts.

And Dee Wallace was wonderful.

I still like S.O.B. better (LOVE that one), but surprised how well this held up. Liked it more now than I did all those years ago seeing it in the theater as a teenager.

Enjoy both.

"Serial" was such a good book ... or series of articles, I guess. The movie did not do it justice. It was very much in the vein of Tales of the City.
