My favorite parts were the performances from Broadway shows.

Met her around then and hung out in groups of friends. My naïveté as a young gayling that all the stories of celebrities being gay were just rumors was quickly destroyed. The butchest, most foul mouthed, openly gay dyke I had ever met. I give her props for being out there at a time when it wasn’t easy. Ellen may have been the first to be explicit but Rosie never hid - though the Tom Cruise obsession thing was a little deceitful/played up for all the straight women viewers.

It was a great show. Fun, colourful and, except for Tom Selleck’s appearance, always upbeat and positive.

I remember that first show like it was yesterday. I could tell from that very first show that it was going to be a huge hit and cultural reset.

The way she highlighted Broadway shows was revolutionary. She was the one who made The Lion King and Spring Awakening into huge hits. She also was the first one to promote the Harry Potter books in America. She raved about them non-stop and she was the main reason that Harry Potter became such a big deal here. Same with the Tickle Me Elmo craze. She and her show were a cultural phenomenon, even more so than Oprah.

I really miss the Rosie and Penny Marshall friendship. Do you remember their wonderful K-Mart commercials?

I liked her show well enough - it was entertaining sometimes, annoying at others.

But she will forever have my respect for dedicating a HUGE portion of an episode of her show to an absolute fucking LEGEND that, at that time, had been ignored and rarely talked about on TV for years.

I think Rosie exaggerated her friendship with Madonna. They worked on a movie together in the early 1990s. I think Madonna never called BS on it because Rosie was such a fangirl and gave her good (and free) press.
