Tracey Ullman does a couple of characters in blackface.

True, R1, but not anymore. She already said she wouldn’t do it today and those shows aren’t even on the air anymore. Her BBC show doesn’t feature any of that. It’s more political satire like Spitting Image and is critically acclaimed.

I loved the League of Gentlemen, though the blackface bits were just off--at the very least.

But Papa Lazarou wasn't black face; it was black face parody sending up the like the Black And White Minstrels. No one could see the character and think he was supposed to be black.

Ridiculous. You can’t whitewash history. If they’re that worried about it, but up a disclaimer at the beginning of the episodes like Warner Brothers do on old cartoons. I’d love to know what percentage of black people find Papa Lazarou offensive. That’s like me getting offended over fucking Pennywise or something. Priorities! x

I knew Chris Lilli would get cancelled eventually. Most of it is non-PC. But I will always love “Jen” - one of the funniest characters ever.

The acts from the past meant to denigrate vs the current comedy skits where actors do impressions of black celebrities, shouldn't context matter in these situations? There are far too many instances of actors/comedians of all races doing skits/impressions as people of other races for this to be practical. Put some disclaimer ahead of the show for people who are too sensitive to function.

R7, context doesn’t mean shit anymore. Everyone either needs to be a victim or morally superior by feigning outrage. We live in the era of social media. People need clicks and what gets more clicks than hoping on the victim bandwagon? Jussie wasn’t an isolated incident.

Will Jonah be eliminated?
Chris Lilley & a lot of Australian/NZ celebs look like they have some native ancestry from those regions. I wonder if that would make a difference.

Even Ja’mie: Private School Girl?
Definitely not quiche.

Lilley never really had any other career beyond these sketch shows. His career is now completely over. No company will dare hire him and he’s too long in the tooth to try drama. These shows were his bread and butter and how he made money. No more royalties.

Cancel all white people everywhere.

They could just take out the characters for whom he darkened his skin. Edit them out of the shows.

I wonder if Billy Crystal has been dragged yet for Sammy Davis Jr.
I went to see Crystal’s live show a few years back & he talked about his Nassau County high school basketball team competing against the team from Roosevelt High. About 50% of the audience was local & understood the reference. For the other half, Crystal said “Everyone on their team was about 7 ft tall. The team needed 2 buses. The players came on one bus & their girlfriends & kids came on the other bus.” He imitated the two teams by making dribbling motions & imitated “black” shots for the other team & talked in Ebonics. It was pretty racist, I thought. I know what he was getting at - his school was white, with a lot of Jews , they thought they were good basketball players but they we’re terrified of & got creamed by the black ballplayers from Roosevelt......but, come on. And the remark about the two buses got one of the biggest laughs in the show.
