I love Pete, but feel like he should have been more visible considering his challenges with Black voters.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 5, 2020 6:20 PM |
Sadly, R1 is right. He had his moment in the sun, and now it's gone. He should not have stepped aside for Biden. He could've been the nominee and excited people.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 5, 2020 6:22 PM |
His BLM tweet was heavily ridiculed.
“It’s like the diplomacy bot is having a stroke.”
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 5, 2020 6:26 PM |
Pete was the only candidate who, like Joe, had no current elected position when he threw his delegates to Joe and withdrew.
He was the strong second for non-Bernie delegates and had the most to offer Biden by withdrawing.
He still has 25+ MILLION dollars in his campaign account.
Secretary of Defense? Secretary of State depending on the VP? Director of OMB?
Right now he is focused on getting Joe elected.
Just that simple.
And to put the VP in perspective, EVERY Democratic possibility is better tha Dan Quayle. Better than Pence.

He finally had that overdue circumcision and is resting comfortably with Chasten by his side.

Lol, R8.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 5, 2020 6:32 PM |
How interesting, R8. I hadn't seen the criticism but immediately zoned in on what he would be attacked for even though I understood his intention at the first reading.
In a way it's almost meta in the way those who hate him have a visceral and instant ability to misconstrue his intention just as his very statement itself is saying. Simply replacing "depends" with "are dependent upon" largely clarifies his position leaving only the definition of "we" up for debate.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 5, 2020 7:03 PM |
I imagine that he’s mostly waiting to see what happens in November. He’s recently started a PAC called Win the Era, to support and endorse down-ballot candidates and promote issues such as climate change and cyber security.
Besides that and throwing support behind Biden, there isn’t much else he can do right now. It’s not like he can be out and about in the middle of a pandemic.

He did an online fundraising event with Biden last week and has started his own PAC endorsing down-ballot candidates. He definitely should be angling for a cabinet spot to set himself up for another run. I'd also think he might move out of Indiana once he has the cabinet spot and try to run for Governor of another state where he'd be more likely to win. He's still so young that he could wait another 12-20 years to make another Presidential run, and the best thing he could do for himself is to build up his resume in a way that wouldn't force him to take a ton of positions that could be liabilities as the political climate changes.

What R69 said is the sad truth of the matter.
Biden is so old and confused and has lived his adult life suffused with every privilege. He hasn't had to answer to a boss or punch a time clock or scramble to feed his kids.
He most certainly has young people like Buttigieg working in the background to help him appear to be plugged into the reality of voters' lives. Without them, he's just another George Bush staring blindly at a bar code scanner.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 6, 2020 11:41 AM |

I think you're wrong R74.
People age. No, he's not as sharp as he used to be but he's not anymore befuddled than McTurtle who is doing a glorious job of ruining the country. Please stop trying to push this untrue narrative.
Also, it is well known that after his first wife and child where killed he commuted between DC and his home district via Amtrak every single day so he would be home for his surviving children. Of course it's not the typical nine-to-five narrative, but it does put him in common space with working class people on a regular basis for a very humbling reason.
I also find it beyond absurd to think anyone could spend eight years in close proximity to the invective and hatred thrown at the Obama family and not have a heightened sense of empathy. It is convenient to think of him as just another old, befuddled white guy, but there isn't even evidence of it, let alone proof.

by Anonymous | reply 82 | June 6, 2020 1:20 PM |
R77, Biden's first wife died in 1972. There has been more than enough time for Biden to raise his children and still become disengaged from the demands of the MODERN world. To one degree or another, it happens to everyone as they grow older. New things develop and are adopted by young people and grandpa doesn't even get the message that anything had transpired. It is exacerbated by money and power. They are both pursued because the can insulate the holder from life's hard lessons. Biden has had more than enough wealth and power all through his adult life to be well insulated at the age of 77.
Every time Joe Biden uses the word "malarkey," he reminds the world he has one foot in the grave. He MUST have young people like Buttigieg around him to keep him plugged into what's happening now. 1968 he's got covered.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | June 6, 2020 1:41 PM |
R83, "more than enough time" and "more than enough wealth" are not proof positive that he actually is removed.
A college classmate of mine became General Council to a major tech company 12 years ago when we were about 40 and she freely admitted that she had to hire young staff to keep up. I get it and understand your point.
What I'm arguing is that a word like "malarkey" doesn't mean that a career civil servant, with grandchildren, a spouse who teaches junior college and a proven track record of being empathetic shouldn't be viewed as out of touch just because the conditions would facilitate it.
I'm glad Pete is on board and helping. I'm glad Julian is on board and helping. We need all hands on deck. And that is why I ask that since you and I are rowing in the same direction you just please stop dragging your oars in the water by repeating talking points that are not borne out by facts.

To answer the question, dude's been fundraising and organizing like a demon for Biden and the first slate of down-ballot candidates endorsed by his PAC. He's also appearing at virtual state democratic conventions (Texas, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Indiana). Plus a foreign policy conference, a book event for Bakari Sellers, and some others. Two recent fundraisers for Harrison (SC vs. Graham). Basically everything you want from your DNC chair.

by Anonymous | reply 96 | June 6, 2020 3:15 PM |
He's finding out he should have gone the Southwest route instead. He tried to appeal to the Rustbelt while trying to win black voters. None of those two groups were going to elect a gay man, especially a gay man from Indiana.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | June 6, 2020 3:40 PM |
The black community's problem with him had nothing to do with his sexualilty. Many black people in South Bend had with the margin he got for his second term. It is litert impossible to hit 80% of the vote in the Dem primary or general election without MANY black votes. So shut up with your easily disprovable racism.
Black voters had an issue with the way he handled a policing crisis in South Bend. The exact same thing gripping the nation right now if you haven't noticed. The face that you overlook what was very obviously the source of tension with black community to instead claim all black people are homophobic reflects quite poorly on you.
And FWIW Pete did not try to win black voters. They were no part of his strategy. He almost completely ignored South Carolina and Nevada, the two most diverse early states to focus entirely on Iowa and New Hampshire, the whitest.

Let's be honest. He needs to move out and head to El Paso or Southern California.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | June 6, 2020 10:12 PM |
I agree. Look for him in Biden's cabinet.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | June 6, 2020 10:15 PM |
Getting applause for your plan for Black America from majority white audiences in New Hampshire and Iowa is not campaigning for the black vote. Highest number of black voters were in SC. Biden was there non stop. THAT'S courting black voters. Pete TRIED to do events with black people but they had serious questions about the police crisis in South Bend. Pete is very defensive over that and didn't like talking about it so mostly gave up on black outreach. He isn't the only one, I wasn't trying to attack him specifically.
Really only Biden, Steyer, and Kamala put a lot of effort into going after black voters. Most other people gave that up quickly, including Pete. And from what it's worth, Biden got some rough questions from Black voters on the crime bill. They really beat him up for it, and he still kept going back because he knew he needed them
by Anonymous | reply 130 | June 7, 2020 1:06 AM |
r130 Pete spent more time campaigning in S.C than Biden or Bernie or Warren. But go ahead.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | June 7, 2020 1:22 AM |
R131 his events were mostly just rallies or roundtables where people who already supported (which were overwhelmingly white in SC) showed up. That is not nearly enough. You need to be on black radio shows and local news with black interviewers. Go to black churches on Sundays. Do lots of barbershop talks. Basically go to the places where black people are or will be. It's not enough to just go to the state and hope black people come to your events.
And FWIW Pete DID try to do more of that than like Klobuchar or some of the rest of them. But it mostly didn't go well when he did. One reason was he got a lot of angry questions about South Bend. People wanted to talk about that more than his plan for Black America. And in their defense, those grand sweeping policies never end up passing congress while police misconduct is something tangible that mayor's actually have a lot of direct power over.
Then once voting started he mostly gave up and focused heavily on Iowa and NH. Which worked for him at first! He did very well in those states. But to contrast it with Biden, Joe came under heavy criticism for not even being in NH the day of the primary because he was doing events in SC. Just no comparison.

I don't think he didn't want to talk about it; I think his problem was he never successfully hit on any way to simplify his city's complex, frustrating, localized headache into pithy campaign soundbites. The municipal reality seemed to be a melee of Common Council, Indiana state laws, Safety Board, hostile police union, activists (both sane and less so), the DOJ (both Obama and Trump versions), and at one point even the FBI. For instance, I believe the Common Council there is still sitting like an elephant on the police policy reform recommendations from the citizen' committee. All cities have their own variations on this theme; no one's interested in hearing the boring details.
None of these are problems Biden's ever had to deal with, of course. So advantage to him.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | June 7, 2020 3:33 AM |
R124, you're right, but R98 is also right. The primary issues black voters had with him were the issues of policing and of property rights in South Bend. He had a good policy and plan but that wasn't enough to assuage their lack of trust in him.
Yes, the BernieBros exploited that, but they also exploited Kamala Harris's prosecutorial record to the same effect. It wasn't about homophobia as much as it was about the black voting demographic not trusting Pete.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | June 7, 2020 3:37 AM |
R139 Well, "exploited" in the sense that Bernie's campaign recognized that the mass media are underfunded, lazy, and more than willing to gobble down any bullshit or distortion fed to them over Twitter provided it seemed sufficiently provocative and click-baity. I genuinely hated how many times during the primary I caught myself thinking, "Fuck, Trump has a point." I do not ever want to think that.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | June 7, 2020 3:53 AM |
That's exactly what exploited means, yes.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | June 7, 2020 3:58 AM |
Biden obviously did deals with Buttigieg and Klobuchar (possibly also Bloomberg) to get them to drop out of the race. They all dropped out within 24 hours - an impossible coincidence. Beto seemed to be in the group as well, since he cropped up again at the same time. So I'd expect all of them to get rewards under a Biden administration.
The thing Pete would surely want is a Cabinet seat that would get him the experience everyone keeps nagging that he doesn't have.

So anyway, back to the topic, if you really do want to know what he's up to, toss a few bucks into the kitty at Win the Era PAC over on the ActBlue site. You'll get the emails for the zoom organizing events where he introduces candidates the PAC is backing. Each one has done a chat about who they are, how they got into politics, where and what office they're running for, and why, and how to donate and volunteer for their races. They've all been genuinely awesome people. Last week was Congresswoman Lucy McBath, who's running for re-election in the seat that Newt G. used to inhabit.
The upcoming fundraisers he's doing are for Michelle De La Isla (KS-2), Lauren Underwood (IL-14), another for Lucy McBath (GA-6), Yvonne Lewis Holley (NC-Lt.Gov. candidate), Malcolm Kenyatta (PA-state rep), Sharice Davids (KS-03), and Josh Shapiro (PA-AG), plus some group-related fundraisers. Blue Wave!

by Anonymous | reply 168 | June 19, 2020 7:39 PM |
R168 Even Obama was a long shot going from freshman Senator to the White House. But the mass media can make and break candidates. They helped Obama a lot in 2008. They also pushed Trump into contention by ignoring all his vices and ragging incessantly on Hillary's every little flaw.

But to answer your question, Pete will be teaching at Notre Dame this fall.

For all his smarts he was not that bright in choosing South Bend, Indiana to build his political career. Should've gone to Chicago, or Milwaukee. But a gay man in Indiana? Good luck with that. If you can't win statewide in your own state then you're toast. Obama had the highly influential Illinois Democratic Party/Machine behind him. Totally diferent story.
He's gonna be a professor at some Midwest university. Reminds me of a quote from The American President.
President Andrew Shepherd: Is the view pretty good from the cheap seats, A.J.?
A. J. MacInerney: I beg your pardon?
President Andrew Shepherd: Because it occurs to me that in twenty-five years I've never seen your name on a ballot. Now why is that? Why are you always one step behind me?
A. J. MacInerney: Because if I wasn't, you'd be the most popular history professor at the University of Wisconsin.

Q. Mike, when you and Pete began planning the campaign in that tiny office downtown, with only a couple of helpers, little funding and no standing in the polls, what chance did you think he had for the nomination?

Indiana is a solidly red state, he'll never win a statewide election there. His only real chance for advancement is a cabinet position. Even that is a weak stepping stone to the presidency unless Kamara Harris selects him for VP either in 2024 or under the 25th Amendment when she steps in for Biden. I'm predicting Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Especially when the base of your party is black folks that form the backbone of the party you wanna lead. Hillary worked her ass off, so did many others to be accepted. But mayor of small town USA, and the record is full of holes without really supporting the base? Come on! Where are these alleged smarts?! Oh, Pete is an image of what should be.
