Is renewing your passport a year in advance too early?

It expires next August. But I want to do it now, while it's on my mind. Is there any reason to wait? TIA for your guidance.

The reason to wait is to save money. I tend to be overly cautious and renew 6 months early. While you're at it, don't forget to renew Global Entry.

OP, you can renew your passport whenever you want . As R1 says, the main reason to wait till the recommended 9 months prior to expiration is to save $. But at this point the State Dept has very limited operations due to COVID, so they may not accept it. I'd say go for it if you don't mind being passport-free for an indeterminate waiting period. When normal operations resume, there's going to be a deluge, even with limited air travel.

And R1, Global Entry was taking forever to process -- I'm talking 6-9 months -- even before COVID. I shudder to think what the waiting period is like now. On the other hand, if you want to offer up your biometrics to Clear (and whomever else they share with), you can get processed in no time! Isn't that grand!?

Think about this a thousand times. Now is not the time to be without a passport. Wait til things cool off.

I've done it 6 months ahead of time but they actually called me to ask why!
