Minnesota state police arrest CNN's Omar Jimenez for reporting

WTF?

He was as calm as could be, and told them he'd stand wherever they wanted him to stand.

The police are completely out of fucking control. You can't just arrest any minority because you don't like something they said or did. Imagine going through society knowing that at any moment someone could take custody of you or brutalize you at will for no reason. That's what we live through everday. It can't go on. No one should have to put up with this. They need to be fired. Floyd's killers need to be arrested, IMMEDIATELY.

Are you frightened for the country this morning? Am I panicking or is this out of control? Mayors across the country must be freaked out this mornIng. And the goddamn virus. Jesus. Or am I Mary? I’d like to be a Mary right now. Am worried I’m not.

CNN Producer Bill Kirkos and CNN Photojournalist Leonel Mendez were also arrested with CNN Correspondent Omar Jimenez.

by Anonymousreply 13May 29, 2020 11:29 AM

He is being released right now. CNN says the police never turned off the camera and have been watching the whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 26May 29, 2020 11:51 AM

So the cops are clearly just arresting any black guys they see.

by Anonymousreply 27May 29, 2020 11:55 AM

Good thing he only got arrested! The other day they were killing black guys r27!

by Anonymousreply 28May 29, 2020 12:08 PM

The state police are falsely claiming they were confused as protestors while they were trying to clear the streets.

AGAIN we have it on video. They were standing there calmly talking to the media for several minutes before the spontaneous arrest. He repeatedly asked them where they would like him and his crew to stand. There was no error or confusion. The police knew exactly what they were doing. They wanted to teach the black guy a lesson for not knowing his place and they think they can just do it.

I think it's safe to assume that anytime someone is arrested, it's against his or her will.

WTF is wrong with America? I'm not denying that the UK is a shambles, but Christ. Americans really do take it to another level.

by Anonymousreply 36May 29, 2020 12:54 PM

R33 that's not true. The police FREQUENTLY allow perps to voluntarily come to the station and turn themselves over for booking. They can do that anytime they like at their discretion. It's especially common with wealthy, white people who have committed financial crimes. They will almost never come to your hedge fund and cuff you. Only in the most extreme cases like rape or murder.

But with black people they prefer roughing them up. Regardless of what they are alleged to have done. With Omar, if they actually even believed he did something (they didn't) they could have just issued him a ticket or citation. Instead they decided to cuff him and hold him to "teach him a lesson". It's unacceptable.

Floyd was accused of forging a check! Even if you believe he did it, he was no imminent threat to anyone around him. There wasn't even a reason to cuff him, nevermind murder him

by Anonymousreply 37May 29, 2020 12:55 PM

Obviously he was arrested for Reporting While Black, a felony in many states. Its a serious crime, right up there with Driving While Black and Eating While Black.

I'm sorry for what happened to Omar but he will now rise in the ranks of TV journalism. He'll have his own show within a few months and forever be known by that clip of him being arrested. He will owe his career to that one event.

by Anonymousreply 44May 29, 2020 1:47 PM

Oh, I don't think that could happen, R44.

by Anonymousreply 45May 29, 2020 1:50 PM

I think this situation is very unfortunate. I can't get past how this might hurt my chances of being selected as Biden's VP. And I was on such a roll!

Amy, I loved 'officer-involved death' so much as a euphemism for 'murder by racist cop'. What do call this one, 'reporter-handcuff interaction' or similar? Oh, and do you know the name of the president of Mexico yet?

She's playing this moment well, no doubt. But I don't believe for one second that she didn't witness police abuses frequently as an officer herself and helped covered it up like they all do.

She knows exactly "what the hell" they're doing. The police all protect their own.

Good.

Reporters arrested: 4. Cops arrested: 0.

Additionally, the 4 cops are not cooperating with prosecutors, invoking the 5th Amendment. I believe the procedure for someone not cooperating is choking them to death, so they may want to get on that.

Jesus - talk about tone deaf. They deserve what's coming to them.

by Anonymousreply 56May 29, 2020 3:12 PM

It was the MN State Police, not that it makes it better.

They put out some kind of gaslighting statement.

by Anonymousreply 57May 29, 2020 3:15 PM

I think for too long it was just okay for them to do anything they wanted to any black person they saw. And now they don't know how to control themselves.

They feel they shouldn't have to stand there and let a Black person report things they don't want to hear. They should just be able to beat his brains in and then claim he "resisted arrest" for some fabricated crime

by Anonymousreply 58May 29, 2020 3:16 PM

This is opportunistic malfeasance

by Anonymousreply 59May 29, 2020 3:22 PM

'I'm sorry for what happened to Omar but he will now rise in the ranks of TV journalism. He'll have his own show within a few months and forever be known by that clip of him being arrested. He will owe his career to that one event."

He was on CNN, not Fox News.

by Anonymousreply 60May 29, 2020 4:20 PM

Is it true that during the broadcast, Omar switched from a pandemic mask to a tear gas mask? Before the arrest.

If so, we must get our affairs in order because that is a sign of the Apocalypse. I am sure of it.

CNN Transcript:

LEMON:

"But what I will say, I just wanted to say something about Omar. Omar came to CNN, I think it was eight years ago, OK, as an intern from Northwestern School of Journalism.

I shared him as an intern with the "Newsroom". I just moved back to New York City from Atlanta to work at the CNN bureau here. And Omar was an intern for that first summer, him and another young man, Howard Cohen. And they asked me -- they would come to my office and asked me for stuff to do, right? Don, what can we do? Can we help you on this story? Do you need anything? What can we do for your show? What have you?"
