Google Holodomor, then fuck off. In addition to that genocidal famine, Stalin's goal apparently was to randomly murder ("disappear") so many of his countrymen in "purges" that every single citizen in the Soviet Union would know someone who disappeared and would be frightened and obedient as a result. Seven or eight million deaths later, and he pretty much achieved that goal.
