John Lennon and James Dean come to mind.
Assholes and cunts who were deified just because they died young.

Peg Entwistle owns this thread, the only reason she is known is because she died. Got to give it to the girl though for how she did it, make it memorable and people will remember.

Janis Joplin. She could barely get through a concert before passing out. I think Lennon had a good run; great song writing and he gave us "Imagine." James Dean? Pretty face but had no range.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 24, 2020 8:28 PM |
John Lennon wrote many great songs and didn’t die that young...
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 24, 2020 8:29 PM |
He was still a massive asshole
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 24, 2020 8:30 PM |
Kurt Cobain, with the added benefit of mr sensitive who attempted suicide a dozen times getting all his fans to think his wife murdered him.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 24, 2020 8:31 PM |
R4 So what? Everyone dies eventually, even assholes. OP is asking about assholes who died young.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 24, 2020 8:31 PM |
40 is considered young when it comes to dying, R3.
What's more interesting is that stars like John Lennon and Elvis and Marilyn were at the end of their rope when they died. Dying revived them. No one thinks of bloated drunken Elvis or anorexic doped up John Lennon now. And the first person who states that Lennon's "Double Fantasy" LP was good gets a punch in the face.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 24, 2020 8:34 PM |
Marilyn
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 24, 2020 8:34 PM |
R7 You consider 40 as young when it comes to dying? OMG. "Young" is in their 20s. MAYBE low 30s but that's it. Anything over that is NOT young!
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 24, 2020 8:36 PM |
OP, by assholes I mean that they were basically nasty assholes (or cunts) when they were alive.
Lennon was a massive asshole, specially to his son and first wife. James Dean was also assholish.
Marilyn wasn't a cunt. By all acounts she was a very sweet (albeit troubled) woman. The same goes for Judy Garland.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 24, 2020 8:43 PM |
Anothe asshole who died relatively young (or not that old) was Steve Jobbs.
A major cunt was Empress Alexandra.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 24, 2020 8:45 PM |
Paul walker the guy who was in the fast and furious movies. He wasn’t particular vicious but it’s strange how everybody is glossing over his history of dating teenagers.

I read a biography on Jim Morrison and I ended up hating him by the end. He had very few redeeming qualities.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 24, 2020 8:54 PM |
History lesson: MM was not at the end of her rope, professionally. She had negotiated a return to the film she was fired from - with a raise - and got the (cunt) director George Cukor replaced. Her career was back on track.

[quote] 40 is considered young when it comes to dying, [R3].
Not in that crowd. I would even say 30s Is pushing it for a musician. But Steve Jobs in his 50s and Bourdain just past 60 were both young relatively speaking.
But doped up Lennon and fat Elvis are exactly how I remember them.

Jim Morrison, he would beat this shit out of his girlfriend/common-law wife Pamela, and the groupies he had sex with or attempted to have sex with. and I remember reading books about him like R13 mentioned like "No one here gets out alive" and Ray Manzarek's autobiography and Morrison also apparently liked to extinguish lit cigarettes on women.
Contrary to what people theorize he did not fake his death, and he overdosed on heroin-which from what friends who are opiate/polydrug addicts tell me is extremely easy to do even if the person has a tolerance to opiates-and he had used or tried pretty much every single other drug that was available so it was just a matter of time before he used dope/smack/heroin and Pamela was into using heroin long before he was.
He was an incredibly toxic person and even got the young kid/teen Danny Sugerman who started to answer Morrison's fan mail into hard drugs...not that he needed encouragement as the youth culture of the 1960s and 1970s encouraged drug use and everyone who was over 30 was "old", out of touch or square, or part of the establishment and not to be trusted.

Must be a lot of elders on here if ages 50 through 60s are considered 'young.' Anthony Bourdain? I'm very sorry the man died but he did not die 'young.'
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 24, 2020 9:01 PM |
Maybe we need to distinguish between dying 'young' and dying 'too early.'
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 24, 2020 9:01 PM |
Amy Winehouse? I know she was a drugged out mess and even Mick Jagger told her, "You in danger girl!" and Mick had used every drug even heroin. Her boyfriend, entourage/drug buddies were typical addicts and did not care about anyone or anything or her but just were with her because of her $ and drugs and only wanted to stay high constantly. I remember the video of her being homophobic and racist while on all sorts of drugs...not to excuse this but I doubt she even remembered doing this.

MJ and, to a lesser extent, Prince

Hendrix was a douchebag. Not so much an asshole nor cunt, but certainly uniquely, unpleasantly douchey.

Sharon Tate. I heard she was a chronic puppy-kicker.

You don't think Starting Over is a fantastic classic?
I think it made it to 39 in the charts and was on the way down and out when he died.
I won't link it.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 24, 2020 9:44 PM |
I don't think Linda McCartney was an assshole or a cunt but no one had a nice word to say about her until she died. Now go look at the YouTube comments under their songs...and all the nastiness has strangely been forgotten.

John McCain.
I know he was old but the way his obnoxious daughter carries on about his death you'd think he was in the prime of his life.
Also, she's not the only one deifying him.

R9, 40 IS TOO YOUNG TO DIE. Most people live until their late 70s, therefore 40 is young when it comes to dying. You're 14, right?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 24, 2020 10:22 PM |
R28 Yeah, I'm 14. Thanks for noticing.

Starting over is a bad Paul McCartney album.
Again, a youngster at the DL confuses sales with quality.

Well r17, in my own defense, I was making that same point about 40 something musicians when I brought up Tony. Maybe I should have stuck with 50 something YO Jobs. If anybody was going to end up as an animated Head à la Futurama, it would be Jobs. A drug addicted entertainer making it past 40 should probably start getting retirement checks.
It is like saying you are too old to get in the ball pit at Chucky Cheese.

I think the point is that when celebrities die unexpectedly in a tragic way they a permanent legacy boost. Age doesn't really matter. Mentioning anything negative or acknowledging their very obvious flaws is almost forbidden or at least unseemly as an entire generation grieves their loss for the rest of their lives.
By the time a new generation comes around with less emotional attachment, the history is already written.
