In Germany there's Dieter Bohlen who is the German version of Simon Cowell on a German talent show.
Bohlen was in the 80s band Modern Talking as second fiddle to the singer (though he was the one writing the songs).

I think this only works if we talk about duos, because in a group its too hard to tell which one is #2 to the star lead.
