I'm probably watching too much film noir. I love the cigarettes after sex, all that beautiful release. And lighting cigs when introduced - that gesture of striking the match and putting it to the tip of the cigarette. Oh mama.
I love old movie scenes with cigarettes.

The most notable one, to my mind, being the post-coital scene in CHINATOWN. Seeing it for the first time in my teens, it was the epitome of adult sophistication, and remains so for me to this day (though I don't smoke).

I was just thinking the other day how chic it was to see a cigarette lighter. The man pulls out a gold lighter, opens the top and a flame appears.

I'm watching Double Indemnity on TCM. Holy fuck. No explicit hot scenes but we all know what happened when Walter Neff lights that cigarette.

Double Indemnity, like much of Billy Wilder's output, is a great, great film. And that heartrending closer!

Shit, R1, that's the exact smoking scene I thought of.
OK, second thing that comes to mind is Anne Bancroft in "The Graduate." Dustin Hoffman's character kisses AB right after she takes a drag of a cigarette. When DH finishes kissing AB, she exhales a big puff of smoke.

R2 The first gift I gave my partner was a monogrammed gold cigarette lighter. Of course, this was years ago and we both stopped smoking years ago but we cherish that lighter!

If smoking were not dangerous and disgusting, I'd do it all the fucking time.

And expensive, R7.

I've been chain smoking all night. Smoking really feels THAT good.

R9 But when is the last time you had great sex? We need to know...
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 22, 2020 5:49 AM |
I quit smoking years ago but when I did, I never wanted a cigarette after sex. I just wanted a snooze. But I love the implication in movies that hot sex calls for a deep drag on a cigarette after the deed.

R8 I can't imagine what a carton of cigarettes costs now. I quit a hundred years ago because the price was killing me - I smoked two CARTONS a week for a total cost of $25 and change. I think a pack was maybe a dollar? More in a vending machine. OMG - are cigarettes still sold in vending machines?

Our casino has cigarette vending machines. I'm not a big gambler, so the cigarette vending machines are more entertaining than slots. You win every time.

Back in the day, it was glamorous to smoke. But now, it just means you're trash -- in the U.S., anyway.
