Trashy Vacations
While my hubs and I enjoy spending a lot on our vacations, we also enjoy the occasional trashy vacation. Last year, for example, we stayed at the Four Seasons in London, but also went to Vegas and stayed at the Flamingo. Sometimes we need a vacation watching crazy people, eating at buffets and drinking excessively. Anyone else do this?
We also recently discovered the comedy, Benidorm, and think we might go there once the COVID situation is better.

No, I haven't done this because I'm not a fucking snob. I've done my share of Vegas vacations and always had a blast. While my friends and I were actually having fun, I hope we entertained you and your imaginary 'hubs'.

OP, the reality of Benidorm isn't funny in the slightest. It's hellish.

You're kind of ewww OP.
People are going broke, but you need to tell us about the different levels of vacations you take, from uber expensive to budget?
Here's the truth - I haven't had a vacation in seven years.

R3 What are you trying to prove by saying you haven’t had a vacation? You sound like a dumb ass.

I'm saying that during a global recession and pandemic, nobody gives a shit about the different tiers of luxury you regularly experience every year, because who doesn't take multiple vacations every year?
"Oh, just to see how the destitute get their kicks, we went to a buffet, and wasn't it so amusing!! The commoners with their children stumbling over themselves to get second scoops of ice cream at the buffet. Haw haw! Pish posh! Not at all like the service at the Four Seasons, thank heaven!"
Read the room.

Actually, I'm right with OP. I love slumming it sometimes, and I'm a voyeur of human crassness. (And so are 80% of DL posters, or you wouldn't be here, so cut the hypocrisy.)
Anyway, I love Vegas precisely for its garishness and the people-watching. You can't fully appreciate the The Venetian in all its ludicrous glory if you haven't seen the real Venice, IMO.

I'm with R8, I love slumming it too, sometimes. We're not doing it out of a sense of superiority or to make fun at people's situations. No, I do it to relish in human foibles. You can slum it at a fancy, Michelin starred restaurant or at a honky tonk in a tourist trap. It's about joy in watching a person's idiosyncrasies.
What I loved to do before 9/11 was to pick friends up at the airport. You used to be able to go to the gate. Just sit there and watch people go by. It's great fun.

Vegas is *high class* compared to Atlantic City lol. We were there last year for a convention and stayed at Harrah's and did buffets, pool party, Tropicana, panic rooms, carnival - trashy good time! Back to Vegas and LA next year after this pandemic over - hopefully. We stayed at the Bellagio before - considering Mandalay Bay or The Venetian next time.

We’ve been to Atlantic City a couple of times, went by myself for work years ago. My boss brought her British husband once, who observed that Atlantic City is “God’s waiting room”.
Recently we stopped in Laughlin, NV which is a completely different camp experience. The river is actually really pleasant, and it’s amusing watching the horny old rednecks dancing around.

In high school (forever ago) I was working at a drugstore off the interstate near Columbus, Ohio.
I'll never forget when a family came in from West Virginia. I got into a brief discussion with the mother, who told me they were in Ohio for their annual vacation ... to the Ohio State Fair.
It's a great fair, don't get me wrong. But I think at that moment my little middle class bubble burst a little, and I realized how the other half lives.

OP, once I stayed at the Four Seasons in London with my gulf oil friends. The one at Park Lane. Because they were sinking 5 subfloors below their Mayfair townhouse, with a pool, slave rooms, car elevators, the works. Gawd that "spa". Who does Pierre Yves Rochon think he is? Hope you had a good laugh, like we did!

I was recently driving through New Mexico (lovely drive) and I saw a sign off the interstate that read, "TENT REVIVAL TONIGHT: THIS WAY" with a big arrow.
I remember thinking, "What type of person/family is driving along the interstate and decides to pull over for a tent revival?"
It takes all kinds I suppose.

I hosted my dear friend, the Maharani of Baroda, for a tour of Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge and then the Great Smokey Mountains. The Maharani was very polite but I could tell she didn't enjoy Dollywood. Her favorite spots were mini-golfs and Indian (feather) trading posts along the mountain roads.

R29 I live in Reno and if you're wanting the show experience, stay downtown at Circus Circus. Otherwise, there's a lot of outdoorsy stuff to do in this area--hiking, mountain biking, skiing and snowshoeing, etc. Lake Tahoe is also a short drive away. Please visit, we can use your tourism dollars after the shutdown.

The Flamingo IS trashy, have spent many hours there. Our room was camp AF, newly remodeled with hot pink throughout.
By the way, on our first Vegas trip last year, I had an edible and went to Circus Circus. Had a great time, perfect way to experience it.

When you enter Circus Circus you do so on a moving walkway. Then the unbearable stench of cigarette smoke hits you. I cannot imagine who would want to vacation in such horrible places. I couldn’t stand being in there for more than a couple minutes but I wanted to see how the trash do Vegas. Our limo was waiting outside and the driver was laughing at coughing the whole way back to the the Wynn.

Living in Europe for awhile now has allowed me to take one 10 day vacation and another 11 days per year. For the 10 days I normally visit my family or go with the lady I room with to swanky place in an exotic location (yes we pretend we are a straight couple in some countries because it's better for both of us in places like Morocco). The other 11, I couple with long weekends to take a short trip in a European capital. I fly with an economy line local airline and stay at a less expensive B&B and eat in a fancy place once and the rest salads from fast food or the vegetarian option at an Arabic place because I am there to see a new place, not stuff my face and hang out in a luxury hotel.
However now that may be gone for awhile. I am realizing too that while Americans have a better economy, Europeans have a lot more free time to enjoy and to travel because it is cheap and close.

R41 - as a senior systems engineer, I am hardly destitute, thank God. Especially now, with the pandemic and new system architecture needed by firms throughout the world. But if you wanna be staying 10 days in a 5 star hotel or enjoying a nice car and apartment the rest of the time, I hardly see the point of 5 stars for a 3 night visit when you are there to see and experience the food and sights.

My mom loves Laughlin, Nevada.
Picture this: All the charm, (or lack thereof) and clientele of Atlantic City, but it's 115 degrees during the day and 95 at night.

I felt that way the first time I went to Palm Springs. I was driving east and moving to Virginia. I was 26. Everyone in Palm Springs seemed REALLY old.
Fast-forward to 2020. I'm 67, and much older than many of those people were!

I’d do one or the other, too far apart. If you go at the right time, you could see some of the sights in Mojave National Preserve and do Laughlin. There are caves, a really cool train depot, sand dunes and more.
