Pier 1 is DEAD to me!

Pier 1 Imports is calling it quits.

The bankrupt home-goods retailer has asked a court for permission to liquidate its remaining 540 stores once they reopen, ending a 58-year legacy of selling colorful glassware, wicker furniture and other home decor.

“This is not the outcome we expected or hoped to achieve,” Robert Riesbeck, Pier 1’s chief executive and chief financial officer, said in a statement.

This has been an obvious ending for months. If you go to their website, everything is either sold out or deeply discounting. They've been liquidating for ages.

by Anonymousreply 1May 19, 2020 3:29 PM

So how much in bonuses will executives pay themselves for driving the company into the ground?

by Anonymousreply 2May 19, 2020 3:30 PM

I'm actually kind of sad about this one, I got some pretty decent wicker baskets from them in the 1990s that we still have, and they were the only place that had the size of planter pots we needed last fall.

by Anonymousreply 3May 19, 2020 3:32 PM

Their stores were a mess but they had some well designed and sturdy furniture made for smaller spaces. They had good customer service, too. I'm sad they'll be gone.

by Anonymousreply 4May 19, 2020 3:33 PM

Pier 1's mistake was trying to imitate stores like West Elm and CB2. Why they gave up their unique market niche to World Market and the funkier Target offerings I'll never understand. We already had plenty of stores selling boring MCM furniture in bleached-out wood. I miss the days (not so long ago) when Pier 1 had some really fun, unique pieces in saturated colors.

by Anonymousreply 5May 19, 2020 3:33 PM

overpriced junk!

won't be missed.

by Anonymousreply 6May 19, 2020 3:43 PM

Always seemed like the neglected younger sibling of Cost Plus. Also, now that Bed Bath & Beyond Pretentious has taken over Cost Plus, I'm inclined to stay away from that store too.

by Anonymousreply 7May 19, 2020 3:49 PM

i remember when they sold womens clothes

by Anonymousreply 8May 19, 2020 4:03 PM

not a surprise at all

by Anonymousreply 9May 19, 2020 4:12 PM

R7, so that's what's been wrong with Cost Plus the last few years! Too bad -- I used to enjoy shopping there and also at Pier One right across the street. Haven't been to the latter in years and haven't found anything worth buying at the former in a very long time.

by Anonymousreply 10May 19, 2020 4:12 PM

I haven't bought anything there in many years but my local store was always clean, orderly and always well stocked, they just didn't have anything I wanted. The store rarely had many customers while the HomeGoods store was always packed.

by Anonymousreply 11May 19, 2020 4:13 PM

They used to have nice holiday accoutrements. Then a few years ago their holiday selection went to shit.

by Anonymousreply 12May 19, 2020 4:19 PM

I remember when you could go there and pick up some wonderful, funky stuff dirt cheap . Then they got grand ,and way overpriced. That being said,I still have several pieces of furniture from there that are good, solid stuff and will last forever. Im sad,but not surprised as they are really pricey . Home Goods has some really good quality stuff very cheap, but youve got to dig as its buried in a sea of made in china crap.

by Anonymousreply 13May 19, 2020 4:20 PM

I will miss Pier 1 at Christmas. They always had a good assortment of Holiday ornaments and gifts.

by Anonymousreply 14May 19, 2020 4:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 15May 19, 2020 4:24 PM

I remember in the 1960's going in to one in Kansas and it was like hippie heaven. Loved Christmas shopping there for creative or one-off gag gifts.

by Anonymousreply 16May 19, 2020 4:25 PM

I ate all the profits.

by Anonymousreply 17May 19, 2020 4:27 PM

“ending a 58-year legacy“

It’s been a long walk off of a short Pier 1.

by Anonymousreply 18May 19, 2020 4:29 PM

[quote]They used to have nice holiday accoutrements. Then a few years ago their holiday selection went to shit.

I would not go quite that far, but I did notice a drop in quality and selection. That had always been the main reason I would stop there as well, but had been stopping there less and less in recent years, because there was less I liked.

by Anonymousreply 19May 19, 2020 4:30 PM

ADDENDUM: Pier 1 will never be as bankrupt as that other Piers (Morgan).

by Anonymousreply 20May 19, 2020 4:33 PM

[quote]Robert Riesbeck, Pier 1’s chief executive and chief financial officer, said in a statement.

Here's the problem. A company as large as Pier 1 should not have the same person being CEO and CFO. Where's the accountability?

by Anonymousreply 21May 19, 2020 4:37 PM

I still have a sofa from Pier 1 that my mother got for me when I had my first apartment.

by Anonymousreply 22May 19, 2020 4:38 PM

They should have stuck to the smaller store sizes like when they were in malls back in the day. For some reason the products just seemed more interesting back then. Better to have smaller store with a small selection of interesting items instead of a huge store with a huge selection of shitty stuff that you can get anywhere.

yum-oooooooooo

by Anonymousreply 25May 19, 2020 4:58 PM

Pier One has sucked for years.

World Market stole their vibe years ago, and opened bigger stores. IKEA also stole some of the college-dorm-flimsy-furniture customers.

And the quality just got worse and worse.

by Anonymousreply 26May 19, 2020 5:17 PM

My stepdad's runaway brother came to live with us in Southern California in the late 60s. He applied for a job at the Pier One in Anaheim, which was huge and full of rattan swing chairs and paisley fabric curtains and bed spreads, candles and groovy posters. He came home and told us one of the application questions was, "Have you ever been wanted by the FBI?"

by Anonymousreply 27May 19, 2020 5:20 PM

I had one of their Papa-San chairs in my first apartment. I loved that thing.

Later on, I found them a good source for reasonably priced curtains. I'll miss Pier 1.

by Anonymousreply 28May 19, 2020 5:21 PM

Le garbage.

by Anonymousreply 29May 19, 2020 5:24 PM

I ordered lamps about 2 months ago & was wondering where they were. Checked my account yesterday & order was canceled weeks ago without telling me.

by Anonymousreply 30May 19, 2020 5:24 PM

With Pier 1 closing, think of all the Karens who will be released into the wild with nowhere to go!

by Anonymousreply 31May 19, 2020 5:29 PM

They basically turned into a summer furniture /patio store with high prices. Their funky one-of-a-kind cabinets/storage items turned into the same stuff you see at The Christmas Tree Store & Kirklands.

by Anonymousreply 32May 19, 2020 5:29 PM

R27, how was the answer to that question treated? Did a "yes" mean that the store wouldn't consider hiring such a scofflaw, or did it mean that the store would embrace a cool rebel like you?

by Anonymousreply 33May 19, 2020 5:34 PM

That's the real worry, R31. The place was Karen central.

by Anonymousreply 34May 19, 2020 5:35 PM

I remember a poster here, a self proclaimed cunty queen, who decorated their dorm room in all Pier 1 decor at the height of Pier 1's popularity.

by Anonymousreply 35May 20, 2020 1:06 AM

Their furniture was kind of ugly anyway.

by Anonymousreply 36May 20, 2020 1:07 AM

I went into a Pier 1 many years ago. It was basically just tacky decor crap you'd find much cheaper elsewhere.

by Anonymousreply 37May 20, 2020 1:10 AM

Too expensive. When a set four shitty drink coasters is $30, and Home Goods is down the street, I knew they were in trouble. It's all made in China shit, and the greed was like someone shitting in your face.

by Anonymousreply 38May 20, 2020 1:17 AM

They've been struggling for years, closing stores, trying different merchandise. No surprise. Even without COVID, they were expected to go out of business.

by Anonymousreply 39May 20, 2020 1:43 AM

They closed the store near me months ago. This is not Corona related.

by Anonymousreply 40May 20, 2020 1:45 AM

I just went to the site and realized why I don't shop there. Its nothing but overpriced kitsch.

by Anonymousreply 41May 20, 2020 2:29 AM

You could tell they had lost their way many years ago when they chose to have Kirstie Alley as their spokesperson.

by Anonymousreply 42May 20, 2020 2:46 AM

our Pier 1 closed several months ago. it actually changed quite a long time ago from Pier 1 to Abode. that name change hurt them, they would send out flyers 'we're still basically Pier One!'. it was a long slow death kind of thing. loved using their bathroom which i was very respectful of, i mean i may throw tp around in the Wmart broom but not at P1/Abode. will miss the place very much. got a great full view mirror there years ago that brings me joy. always meant to buy certain items...have bought & received gifts from there. it was my favorite gift place, inventory became stale though for sure.

by Anonymousreply 43May 20, 2020 3:01 AM

I liked them for a small little side table or a little tchotchke here and there. Oh well... There's nothing left.

by Anonymousreply 44May 20, 2020 4:47 AM

My last visit to Pier 1 was during the holiday season last year, and I just felt bad for them - you could tell the end was near. In addition to barely having any holiday decor for sale, their sound system was completely fucked up - it was blaring Christmas songs full blast, but through a TON of static. It was so jarring, like nails on a blackboard, and yet it was still on, which made me think that maybe they somehow couldn't turn it off. When your store can't even afford to fix its sound system, it is OVER.

by Anonymousreply 45May 20, 2020 11:50 AM

I liked it at one time and got a few things there. Though that one time was the 1990s. Had only been there a couple times over the last 20 years. It still seemed decent, but overpriced if you didn't catch a sale - but that's essentially true for most retail.

by Anonymousreply 46May 20, 2020 11:53 AM

Some of you haven’t been there in along time if you think they were trying to be a hip downmarket copy of West Elm or CB2. Pier one was full of tacky crap like “Live Laugh Love” stuff, potpourri dispensers and ornate metal big spoon/big fork wall hangings.

by Anonymousreply 47May 20, 2020 12:51 PM

Your prices went up, but your quality didn't. BYE!

by Anonymousreply 48May 20, 2020 12:58 PM

The US loves their tchotchkes!

Tat galore!!

by Anonymousreply 49May 20, 2020 1:05 PM

That's not what I saw last fall, R47. Lots of dressers and chests of drawers, wicker chairs, tons of pillows and throws, dishware, more candles and candleholders than were possible to comprehend, centerpieces, runners for tables and floor both, vases, etc. Not many planters but what they had were a good large size and nice to look at. There was one section of framed prints but it was basically in a box on the floor and I didn't flip through it so maybe they were all Live Laugh Love types of things.

The Halloween decorations were nice enough though I noticed a lot of feathers, which I thought was odd.

by Anonymousreply 50May 20, 2020 1:10 PM

R47 is full of shit. Pier 1 doesn't carry stuff like that.

by Anonymousreply 51May 20, 2020 1:47 PM

They used to be priced well for household stuff. Then they jacked up their prices but not their quality. I bought a nice runner for the middle of my table that was marked down from $15. About 2 years later I saw another runner I liked & it was $45. I asked, “Is this a fake price? Like, is it really on sale for 50% off?” They said no. And they were huffy about it too, as if they hadn’t been selling $10 runners 2 years ago,

I really liked their Sea Air handsoap & lotion set for the bathroom. Smelled great - fresh, not perfumey. They stopped making all their scents in handsoap. Why? I asked. Because it was too affordable?

You could always count on them at Christmas. Teen girls would pour in to buy scented candles for their female friends & teen boys would buy scented candles for their moms. “I gotta get a present for my mom!”

“Dude, get a scented candle at Pier One! Chicks love that.”

I guess Bath & Body Shop supplanted Pier One as the go-to store for scented candles.

They were one of the first stores to sell glimmer string led lights. But again, you had to wait til a 50% off sale to buy them because they were ridiculously overpriced. Then I went & bought some pumpkin glimmer string lights at 50% off and when I turned them on, the lights showed plain white. You had to hold them up to your face to see they were Halloween lights with pumpkins in front of the led bulbs.

I used to like the funky stuff they had years ago like figurines, sculptures, vases. Folk stuff made by people in Thai fishing villages and from Indonesian markets. Then it just became overpriced Chinese crap.

by Anonymousreply 52May 20, 2020 11:51 PM

R52, they used to sell an air freshener spray that was the only scent my husband and I could agree on. It was “mango” but it didn’t smell like fruit. It was more like fresh ginger.

And way before that, when I was a teenager, it was such a pleasure to go there and poke around at the cool stuff there.

by Anonymousreply 53May 20, 2020 11:54 PM

Will Kirstie Alley be doing liquidation commercials?

by Anonymousreply 54May 20, 2020 11:59 PM

Pier One became a place where everything they sold only looked good in Pier One. Instead of interesting funky stuff, it became a lot of teal seat cushions, orange placemats & wicker sets that only matched other stuff in the store.

The store was well put together, but who wants a houseful of matching stuff that makes your home look like a pier one store?

by Anonymousreply 55May 21, 2020 12:02 AM

Oh, that fickle supply chain from China. And erstwhile customers who "remember" buying in the 60s or 80s.

Shocking turn of events.

by Anonymousreply 56May 21, 2020 1:11 AM

[quote]Pier 1's mistake was trying to imitate stores like West Elm and CB2. Why they gave up their unique market niche to World Market

I don't know about that, back in the 80's everything they sold was cheap brass from India, Chinese paper lamps and wicker chairs that fell apart after a month. Stuff you would only buy while living in a cheap ugly apartment going to school.

by Anonymousreply 57May 21, 2020 1:15 AM

Goodbye, Sister Moon!

by Anonymousreply 58May 21, 2020 2:39 AM

This is so sad.

by Anonymousreply 59May 21, 2020 2:46 AM

A set of four shitty quality drink coasters, for $30, that they probably paid .65¢ to make in China.

That won't last a year.

Fuck Off.

by Anonymousreply 60May 21, 2020 2:51 AM

They don't call it Queer 1 for nothing.
