Stana Katic's Controversial Castle Firing Left Actress 'Hurt, Confused'

It’s been four years since ABC unceremoniously dismissed Stana Katic from Castle (only to turn around weeks later and cancel the series altogether) and the actress behind Kate Beckett appears to have made peace with ugly incident.

In a new interview with Australia’s Daily Telegraph (via the Daily Mail), Katic conceded that the “entire experience” left her “confused” and “hurt,” but added, “Time has passed and I am so thankful to have been a part of that project [and] for it to have affected as many people as it did. People loved Kate and Nathan Fillion’s Rick as a couple and loved the story we told, loved all of those characters.”

Although no one connected to ABC or Castle has ever explained the thinking behind potentially continuing the show sans Katic, reports at the time of the 2016 incident suggested it was a cost-cutting move ahead of a an ultimately ill-fated ninth season.

In a 2018 interview with EW.com, the current star of Amazon’s Absentia admitted, “I’m actually still not clear on the thought process behind the way that it went down,” before adding, “It hurt and it was a harsh ending.”

That said, she was quick to note, “I met so many beautiful people on the show, and we collaborated on something really unique. It would be a disservice to those people, to the work that we did together, and to my work, which I feel contributed, in part, to the success of the show, to be anything but grateful.”

Well that was a big letdown. I was hoping for something juicy.

by Anonymousreply 1May 19, 2020 12:29 AM

I heard it was because she was a real cunt to everyone.

So no surprise there.

Notice, she hasn't worked since then.

by Anonymousreply 2May 19, 2020 12:30 AM

Except she has, r2. The story references some Amazon series she has been doing.

[quote]I heard it was because she was a real cunt to everyone.

Actually, a majority of the "gossip" suggests that she wasn't and that it was Fillion who treated her like crap almost daily on the set.

I hate modern TV. I don't watch a single series. They're all pretty, but bland and one-dimensional.

From what I have heard from people in the industry, there are no good guys in this. She was terrible to the crew and could be difficult. He was an aging frat boy and often unprofessional. Apparently, he did defend/ protect the crew from her toxic behavior on numerous occasions, but he was no picnic to work with either.

The show wouldn’t have gotten on the air without Mr. Fillion in the starring role.

If she’s got beef, she’s smart to keep it to herself.

by Anonymousreply 7May 19, 2020 1:10 AM

[quote] was Fillion who treated her like crap almost daily on the set.

What did he do to her?

by Anonymousreply 8May 19, 2020 1:22 AM

That show was so aggressively bad, even by CBS standards. Not as bad as Blue Bloods though.

by Anonymousreply 9May 19, 2020 1:31 AM

The Rookie is many of the same people who worked on Castle so Fillion couldn't have been that bad.

by Anonymousreply 10May 19, 2020 1:49 AM

Not necessarily, R10.

If the pay and benefits are good, they'll stick with it.

No matter how much of an asshole the lead actor is. It's not like he's in charge of the show, any way.

[quote]That show was so aggressively bad, even by CBS standards.

Since it aired on ABC, why would that be relevant?

by Anonymousreply 12May 19, 2020 2:18 AM

That show was basically a Hallmark Channel procedural with higher production values. It was even worse than "Bones", when it comes to frau-targetting schlock.

by Anonymousreply 13May 19, 2020 3:06 AM

He's also the EP, r11.

A great deal of the problem was Stana's personality. She's rigid, full of herself, at times humorless, elitist, etc., but also extremely professional. Fillion is immature enough to enjoy pushing her buttons. He is like the older brother who likes to teasing his sister. (Fillion is a lot like the Castle character.) For the first few seasons it just added to the the character's relationship. After that, it spun out of control, both actors digging in their heels and becoming more of what they are. Also, Fillion became very unprofessional, being late for work, getting fat, etc. (He also, got called on the carpet by the producers.) Of course, this drove the hyper professional Stana nuts.

However, the show is called Castle, not Beckett. For all of his problems, Fillion was the star. The next most likable characters were the daughter and the mother. Beckett always was the straight man to the comedian. She was considered expendable (Note: in the real world, the straight man gets paid more than the comedian. He has the harder job and he sets up the jokes.)

I thought it was a personality clash?? She would shadow crew members and wanted to try doing a scene differently wheras Nathan just wanted to get shit done. It's bad enough that he got away with the weight gain.

Oh, that’s never happened before.

Good!

Tamala Jones and Penny Johnson Jerald were also not asked to return for the ninth season and the cast didn't know about it until they heard it on social media. Even though Marlowe left somewhat suddenly after season six, when he heard they got rid of Beckett, he was clearly upset about it.

I know Datalounge gossip is always "the bitch was a cunt" but in this case, it really looks like the problem was with production.

by Anonymousreply 19May 19, 2020 11:24 AM

R19, I have always wondered why they brought in Arye Gross to replace Tamala Jones on occasion. Generally, they do not release an actress to do a film.

However, Penny Johnson Jerald left in the 7th(?) season so Beckett could have her job.

The ninth season seems to have been going in a different direction, not focusing on the police department. It was going to be more Castle, private investigator. Tamala was probably not asked back because her character was not needed in the story arc.

I hated Katic when the show started (including that awful hair she had for the first season). They had no chemistry, and since she was not a name at all, I couldn't figure out why they had hired her. I remember later in the season Dana Delaney guest starred as a detective Castle worked with, and their chemistry was off the charts (as it had also been on Desperate Housewives). That's who they should have hired to play Beckett, Dana Delaney.
