There have been too many instances of celebrities being drunk/high in public to count. Truman Capote was on some talk show, totally zonked out on something. Gelsey Kirkland was coked out on the Merv Griffin show. Cybill Shepherd appeared drunk while a presenter at the Academy Awards. Ricky Lee Jone seemed very high while accepting a Grammy as Best New Artist. Elizabeth Taylor was drunk off her ass while presenting a Golden Globe award. Jimi Hendrix always seemed stoned. Drunk, drugged celebrities making fools of themselves...it happens a lot.

I don't have footage because it was too long ago, but I saw a classic interview on Australian TV in 1977 with Robert Shaw, who was supposed to be promoting The Deep, but was completely off his face and would only rave incessantly about what a wonderful and VERY beautiful, fit, strong man Nick Nolte was. He would not be swayed from his theme no matter how much the host tried - not even when the host proposed that Jacqueline Bisset was also quite a good sort, hint hint.
I have never seen a rumour about this on the DL, but I think your great-aunt in Peoria would have got the message if she'd seen this.

On Sorkin’s The Newsroom, the Jeff Daniels character had ingested a lot of edibles at a party before the bin Laden story and delivered the news high as a kite. I wonder if Sorkin based that on John King.

I remember watching Jessica Savitch and thinking she had such was so good at what she did and that she had a bright future ahead of her. It was, like, a couple of weeks later that she did that sad, dreadful performance. When, she died (was it like a day or two later) it was no surprise. She had so much potential as a reporter.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | May 18, 2020 12:59 AM |
[quote] I remember watching Jessica Savitch and thinking she had such was so good at what she did and that she had a bright future ahead of her.
Actually, her future was already headed downhill well before the infamous drunken broadcast. She was no longer the rising star she had been a few years earlier. She had been demoted at NBC. Connie Chung had replaced her as the anchor of the weekend newscasts, and Savitch was reduced to doing the one-minute NBC News Digests.
[quote] She had so much potential as a reporter.
No, she sucked as a reporter, which is why she was hated by her NBC News colleagues. Her talent was her ability to read the news and connect with the audience. But she had no ability to actually go out and gather the news and report it.

Ace Frehley of Kiss, drunk and coked out in an interview with his bandmates on the Tom Snyder show. Although drunk/high celebrities usually come across as embarrassing and pathetic, Ace Frehley's boisterous behavior was actually the highlight of the show. Snyder was so amused by him that he was in tears from laughing so hard.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | May 18, 2020 1:48 AM |
R86, that's a huge talent. The ability to look into that camera and have the audiences believe in you is what TV news is about. People like Linda Ellerbee were upset because they had far more reporting skills but were way less talented as broadcasters. The irony is that if she lived, her career would have had a resurgence because that became the era of things like Inside Edition, Entertainment Tonight, etc. shows where she could have been showcased well.
I was working at NBC at the time and it was true that they no longer put her photos up in the lobby because they were routine defaced with people taping straws to them.

"The irony is that if she lived, her career would have had a resurgence because that became the era of things like Inside Edition, Entertainment Tonight, etc. shows where she could have been showcased well."
Maybe. Or maybe not. Jessica Savitch was a VERY disturbed person, almost pathologically ambitious and needy. I tend to think that she would have thought it beneath her to do trash tv like Inside Edition and Entertainment Tonight. She wanted to be taken very seriously, not viewed as a lightweight.
By the way, I really don't seem what was so explosively disastrous about that news digest segment that supposedly ruined her career. Yeah, she flubbed it, but what was the big deal? I see news anchors on NBC and other networks who stumble over their words and THEY aren't ruined by it. On local newscasts the anchors frequently flub what they're trying to say. It's annoying, but they don't get fired over it.

Her first sentence is incoherent, and It was a live update (45 seconds?) She was so slurry she went over. That just wasn’t done.
The nightly news had a very buttoned up, conservative air back then. You couldn’t have sloppy drunks representing NBC.

Jessica Savitch is a fabulous bitch. She is made for the camera. Why anyone would put up with her is another question. I can’t imagine going to work with her every day. I’ve worked with people like her - they exist but karma often comes around for them. Usually personal life - which is where they pay the price for their cruelty.

[quote]R98 Why anyone would put up with her is another question. I can’t imagine going to work with her every day.
She is kind to the teleprompter guy, saying, “It’s not you, it’s me.” She even tells the booth she’s willing to be without a stage manager once in a while, but that it’s been happening every week.
It’s not like having a stage manager is some luxurious perk - they’re contractually supposed to be there so newscasters can DO THEIR JOB.

During the 1996 Republican convention in San Diego, a waitress refused to serve a drink to Tom Brokaw. because she thought he was already drunk. It was just his normal slurred way of speaking.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | May 18, 2020 3:57 AM |
That's one of the tamer videos I've seen of her. She had a ridiculous temper and NBC always had access to all of her taped tantrums. The staff hated her so much that they did a video of her to Don Henley's Dirty Laundry and was the featured "bubble headed bleached blonde" and clearly says straight to the camera "who do I have to fuck to get out of this contract?"
If she hadn't been killed, she would have been fired. She had almost no friends in high places at the network. She burned too many bridges and even the crews didn't want to work with her. That's significant.
There will likely never be another movie on her life, but Jessica Lange should have done it decades ago.

I think Savitch was interested in celebrity, although she couldn't admit that because those were the times that women were struggling to her journalists and she was shamed by other female journalists for being an excellent newsreader. Although they were trash TV (though the phrase hadn't been coined yet), she would have ascended to the top of celebrity, which was likely her goal all along.

R123 Savitch was interested in more than celebrity. Remember, she was the anchor of PBS' Frontline and her ambition was to anchor the evening news. Her problem was that she was never really a reporter. She was an anchor. NBC made the mistake of making her their Senate correspondent, when they hired her. She wasn't prepared for it, and NBC kept pulling her away to do promotional work, limiting her ability to grow in the role, and leading to her failure. They should have developed her as an interviewer like Barbara Walters, rather than as a reporter.
