The earlier thread was closed. The film is one of my favorites, but I recognize that many hate it. I'm re-watching it now. Anyone care to discuss?
Vanilla Sky - anyone else like it?

Is this the one where Tom Cruise rides a motorcycle?

I don’t understand the ending at all.
Can you explain it?
What Scientology mantras was this movie trying to spread?

I don't try to draw any conclusion from it, other than the power of dreams and iconography.

I remember when it came out right around 9/11, too many uncomfortable references. I find it a deeply romantic movie.

Spanish slag Penelope Cruz was in the original movie (Abre los ojos) as well

A guy I worked with loved it like you and saw it many times in the theater when it was released. Because he raved about it so much, I meant to see it, but had kind of given up on both Tom Cruise and Cameron Crowe by then... and skipped it. I should give it a try now.

It convinced me that Penelope Cruz can't act in English.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 17, 2020 1:14 AM |
I thought it was the worst work of all the leads--and that's saying a lot.

The only thing I remember about it were the lucid dreams.

I swallowed your cum! That means something!

I wasn't impressed. I generally have a hard time taking Cruise seriously in drama roles but besides that the film just wasn't particularly well-made or compelling enough to really give a damn about it.

It's been a few years since I've seem it, but the character Penelope played in the original Spanish version was different, as I recall. Desirable, but aloof. Her American interpretation was much more compelling. How interesting for an actress to play the same character in very different productions, and different languages.

I prefer the original

One thing we can all agree on - Tom's disfigured face was downright handsome compared to the Spanish guy's.

Haven't seen it in years, but I remember loving it a lot when I did see it. Very creative, thought-provoking movie with a compelling concept, with lots of suspense, lots of twists, lots of yearning and and emotion. The whole Lucid Dream thing is so interesting and cray cray it will leave you scratching your head and running to Reddit to see peoples' theories.
This film was wonderful because it was pre-CouchJumpGate. People still took Cruise seriously as an actor, and we would anticipate his films (which were MUCH more varied and artistic than the action drivel he's been churning out the past several years).

Nice summation, R15. It's that poignant longing that moves me, too.

Vanilla Sky is a great movie!! I love it. The car scene with Cameron and Tom is just tragic, but it so memorable. If anyone is confused about the ending, I'll gladly explain it, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone else.

I can't take Tom Cruise seriously as an actor. He never disappears into a role. His smugness is overbearing and ruins every film he stars in.

Hated this fucking movie. One of the worst movies I have ever seen, ever. Terrible.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 17, 2020 9:54 PM |
What R8 said. Truly a terrible movie - that was down to the terrible writing first, and trite directing second. This was the last Tom Cruise movie I ever saw in the theatre. What made me hate it even more was that I had enjoyed the trailer! Can never forgive them for that.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 17, 2020 10:01 PM |
Even Sixth Sense was better than this.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 17, 2020 10:03 PM |
Actually, I just re-watched the trailer. Even the trailer is trrible. I should have known better. What a mess of a movie.

It's always weird when people so strongly hate a movie one loves a lot. I love Vanilla Sky!
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 18, 2020 4:10 AM |
The Spanish original had guts in genuinely mutilating the otherwise hot lead after the "accident". Hollywood being Hollywood, they wouldn't do that in Vanilla Sky. I suppose it's possible that Cruise's ego was to blame, but considering his appearance in Magnolia, he seems to like making himself look ugly to be taken more seriously as an actor.
Vanilla Sky had better production values, and, I agree with R12 that Cruz was more charming in it. I could see why Cruise's character would fall for her so quickly, but I didn't make as much sense in Open Your Eyes.

Abre los ojos is still superior to this remake.
