Number three is The Crow: Salvation and probably the best of the sequels. City of Angels is as bad as it’s reputation would suggest, although the art direction and cinematography is beautiful.

Part four (thanks for the correction, guess I tried to erase CITY OF ANGELS from my memory) is the nail in the coffin of the Croq film franchise for a reason. Let’s say you’ve never heard such a pretty score and seen such a sweet tragic love story so poorly-shot, roughly-edited and horribly written as this garbage fire. It holds a notorious 0% on RottenTomatoes and has for many years. So shameful is this project that the director took a decade-long hiatus from filmmaking after the release, and then went into making documentaries under a different name. Apparently it’s loosely based on a tie-in Crow novel from the ‘90s (that I have never read and I’m not sure anyone else ever has either) that is significantly less dreadful, but that doesn’t exonerate anything.

The dialogue is so clunky, forced and cringeworthy that it elicits laughter more often than not. The jump cutting is schizophrenic and incomprehensible, to put it mildly, including flashbacks to scenes the viewer saw five or ten minutes prior. The plot is near-impossible to follow and the characterisation is paper-thin. There is nothing to recommend about the cinematography as it’s barely even functional let alone stylish. The gore and sex are gratuitous and silly in a campy way, adding nothing but cheap thrills. The casting is made-up of mistakes and stabs-ins - isn’t the obvious choice to cast David ‘Angel’ Boreanaz as The Crow? Compared to the first and second Crows, this film is undeserving of the name (YMMV whether this one is more acceptable than the shiteous CITY OF ANGELS...)

Yet WICKED PRAYER is wildly entertaining and watchable in spite of all that, especially if one is in a spooky mood (though it’s not for gritty depressed ride-or-die Goths like the original and the sequel). The liminal Injunatec setting is just right for plausible supernatural malarkey, and the throughline of Pagan justice triumphing over both Go(o)d & Evil is fascinating and fresh in its audacity. Furlong is of course a limited actor and difficult to like as a person, but he works surprisingly well as a boyish Emo Gen X Crow who nonetheless expresses a deep heartsore ancestral loneliness as much as apathetic-teen resignation to his melodramatic fate (again, YMMV but I’d say he’s better than Eric Mabius in the part). Danny Trejo also gives a nice restrained turn as a preacher & sheriff sceptical of his own Native roots. This outing is loopier, funnier, lighter and more human the other movies, if that interests you; Dennis Hopper & Boreanaz trying to one-up each other in the Ham leagues is hilarious. Worth mentioning again also that the score is truly lovely, and I feel for the composer who worked on this and wasted his fine work; the motif-driven cue ‘Alive in Your Memories’ is a legit tearjerker.

But even saying all this it’s hard to defend my love for this unapologetic trash. Suppose I must have an enduring affection for crows with broken wings...

It’s generally accepted - even by David himself - that no matter what else he does he’ll always be Angel in the eyes of the world. That’s not the worst way to be typecast.

Their characters suited one another and made for an interesting lively connection with room to advance. And I’m also glad the parallel Buffy/Spike plot wasn’t brought up much in ANGEL, only occasionally and for comic relief or to provoke Angel & Spike into a little tiff to fill time. I hated Spike’s romance (Can we even call it that?) with Buffy in the original show, and didn’t want to see glimpses of it carry over to ruin Buffy/Angel on the spin-off.
