Poll - Men Say It's NOT Macho To Wear Face Mask

“Men more than women agree that wearing a face covering is shameful, not cool, a sign of weakness and a stigma; and these gender differences also mediate gender differences intentions to wear a face covering,”

Do you agree?

by Anonymousreply 66May 16, 2020 11:09 AM

I'd prefer not to end up on a ventilator, but that's just me. I don't give two shits if anybody thinks I'm wimpy or a pussy for wearing a mask.

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2020 4:20 PM

R1 what if you lose a date over it? Some guy thinks you are a sissy and not a real man for wearing a mask?

by Anonymousreply 2May 14, 2020 4:22 PM

Who are the idiots who agree with this statement?

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2020 4:25 PM

R2 I'd prefer to be alive rather than get a 10 minute hookup with some moron.

NO MACHO WAY-YAH FACE MASK!!

by Anonymousreply 6May 14, 2020 4:28 PM

I do feel weird wearing one, and can see how dudes think it’s unmanly. Guys just don’t like to seem like they are afraid or vulnerable. A lot of my friends refuse to wear them for this reason.

by Anonymousreply 7May 14, 2020 4:33 PM

You have dumb friends.

by Anonymousreply 8May 14, 2020 4:33 PM

Was there a dick size survey to go along with this?

by Anonymousreply 9May 14, 2020 4:34 PM

Look at who isn't wearing a mask - men between 20-50. They are just following the pinnacle of masculinity - Trump.

by Anonymousreply 10May 14, 2020 4:34 PM

Lose a date over it? Like the date died, for not wearing a mask, yes?

Jesus. What a ridiculous question.

OP, smart men who are worried about wtf weak minded stagers think of them, are sure as fuck going to wear a mask.

This isn’t some fucking Bruce Lee flick, or a Clint Eastwood western. This is REAL life, and a freakin’ unseen enemy in the form of a virus. Why would you NOT wear a mask????

It’s like women who are running around, having unprotected sex, willingly, fully aware that they could end up with an unwanted pregnancy or STI. The woman had every right to do so, however, why would she take that risk? Now, she had to get an abortion, or get meds, or remain on meds for the rest of her life, because she didn’t think protecting her health, with easily available and inexpensive, measures & such as insisting on ALWAYS using condoms, no matter what, could have prevented it all.

Right???

Listen, everyone has the right to do whatever the fuck they want with their own bodies and health, but why fuck something up that is so EASY to avoid and not transmit, by social distancing, wearing masks and gloves?,

It over the top ridiculous, and honestly, I lose some respect for people whom I encounter, not wearing PPE, for no justifiable and good reason, other than the fact that they’ of low intelligence levels and poorly educated.

That’s not masculine or attractive. That’s a fucking idiot.

jeez. These people are just not bright & really do not get it, huh? It’s just mind blowing. It really is.

by Anonymousreply 11May 14, 2020 4:37 PM

Trump knows or thinks wearing a mask on camera will be used against him, and undermine his image as an Alpha male

[quote] Listen, everyone has the right to do whatever the fuck they want with their own bodies and health

Republicans do not believe this. Ask any woman in a red state if she can choose to get an abortion.

This red state/blue state divide is so counterproductive to Trump's intent to reopen America. The more his (mostly male) acolytes refuse to don a mask only serves to deter the rest of America from engaging in public.

by Anonymousreply 17May 14, 2020 4:49 PM

Who cares what this idiot thinks? His staff is testing positive with daily testing, so who in his or her right mind, would listen to him?

People in his staff have shown themselves to be the biggest ass kissers and pussies alive. Imagine, knowing for a fact that you are endangering your health, the health of your coworkers, you wife, kids, family, just because this fucking idiot is too dishonest and defiant to listen to experts, and out on his PPE?

And imagine going to work everyday, in a place where you know that eventually,’people are going to FOR SURE catch this virus, and run around, testing negative, until one day, they do not, yet remained asymptotic until they eventually tested positive or fell ill, suddenly?

That’s exactly what ended up happening, and these fucking fools actually decided to meet with others repeatedly, after knowing they had been exposed to the virus, because they learned their employees tested positive, forcing the people they were meeting with, to not wear PPE, pose for photos, and then expose them, too, and then these folks who were dumb enough to follow suit, learn that they now need to be quarantined!!!

This president and his administration are some of the most stupid people in the entire United States of America, and that is NOT an easy title to authentically gain, considering their competition. And they’re LIVE, on nation television, for the entire world to see and laugh at!

How is this masculine or strong, manly man behavior? How is this even a bright and good idea? They’re the laughingstock of the world, yet they think they’ve got a good thing going, and now, the pesky little virus, breached their White House perimeter, as we all knew it eventually would.

If it weren’t so pathetically absurd and STUPID, I’d laugh out loud. But the laughs just aren’t coming as easily as I thought they would, when this predictably happened, because I am still in complete shock that the most powerful man on earth and his staff, thought that this was a sign of strength and leadership.

GTFOH. These people are all clowns.

I would have quit, and filed a lawsuit, weeks ago. Fuck showing up to work where I’m forced to spend my day physically exposed to the equivalent of a Petrie dish, lab experiment, because everyone around me is either too fucking stupid or doesn’t have enough balls to point out the fucking obvious.

Fuck these assholes. They deserve worse, however, the daily testing only helped to ward it off for a longer period of time, compared to those poor folks who are forced to work at those meat processing plants, testing positive by the thousands, and infecting their entire communities, who suppress the numbers and refuse to tell the truth: you cannot beat a virus by standing next to each other, and showing to work everyday, instead of closing shop for 2-12 weeks. And the WH could have worked from home, and avoided ALL of this. But once again, I heard some people, decided to pressure the staff to show up on the daily, and not wear masks, for no good or rational reason, other than his ego and mentally unwell thought processes, usually attributed to suicide bombers, or jumpers at the Golden State Bridge.

[quote] Clint Eastwood western

But, plenty of macho bank/train robbers wear masks in westerns!

by Anonymousreply 20May 14, 2020 5:28 PM

R19, I believe his staff has been testing positive for weeks, and that test results were withheld, and that employees were lied to, in order to not cause panic.

Then, they were observed, and kept an eye on, and as soon as they went from asymptotic to symptomatic, they were retested, and were “SUDDENLY” positive.

It happened one too many times, and the gig was finally up. The news got out.

This scenario is not only possible, but highly probable, and it all came from Trump’s brain.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Pence and Trump have both tested positive and are asymptotic, which has probably been the main driver of this whole thing. They figure that if they’re two old men who are OK, everyone else is, too.

The staff has been a freaking lab experiment.

These men are notoriously dishonest, consistently and repeatedly make deeply bad decisions, and do so, after knowing that what they’re doing is either illegal, questionable, possibly criminal, unquestionably criminal, or knowing that their plan already failed them completely, but they’re going to it one more time, hoping for different results Those results do not change when it comes to epidemic, or pandemics. You can bribe a judge, but not a fucking virus.

And yet they manage to endure, make the same mistakes repeatedly, and have support from some of the most insane, mentally ill, and uneducated people on earth.

I would be so ashamed to claim that as my legacy. These men have ZERO pride or healthy self esteem. No one who does, would operate like this.

If I were Mike Pence’s wife, I’d be so profoundly disappointed and ashamed of him. If Jesus truly exists, he already is. No question.

Shame on these people. They are incapable of telling one truth, just one time, and they haven’t the ability to just do the right thing, JUST ONCE. It’s impossible for them. It is not even in their framework of leadership.

No true Christian woman, & wife, would support this behavior in her husband. Not one.

Men have a history of putting their health — and the health of those around them — at risk for fear of seeming unmasculine

One man told an Arizona reporter, for example, that wearing a face mask is “submission.”

“It’s muzzling yourself, it looks weak, especially for men,” he said.

Make no mistake: This is macho bullshit at its most lethal. Donald David Abrams, a psychologist and professor of social and behavioral science at New York University, told CNN that for some people, “Putting on that mask is about as blatant as saying, ‘Hey, I’m a scaredy cat.’”

There’s not enough research yet to know whether it’s mostly men who are refusing to wear masks (though there is a stark ideological divide), but there is some history to give us a clue of what’s to come.

In the past, men have put their health — and the health of those around them — at risk for fear of seeming unmasculine. Research shows that during both the SARS and H1N1 outbreaks, women were more likely to wear face masks than men. During the 1918 flu pandemic, public health officials had to create specific messaging for men so that they would follow basic hygiene rules: The fear was that cleanliness was associated with “school marms and Sunday school teachers,” and to prevent the spread of disease, officials needed to replace that idea with “more modern, manly form of public health, steeped in discipline, patriotism, and personal responsibility.”

This fear of appearing feminine (read: weak) despite life-or-death risks extends to other areas of life as well. American men are more likely to eschew wearing seat belts and more likely to smoke. Men are also less likely to seek help when suffering from mental health issues — thanks largely to stigma and masculinity norms — and much more likely to commit suicide.

Right now, with a pandemic still in full effect, men’s decision to not wear masks in public will have a demonstrable impact on public health.

Of course for some men, the decision to wear a mask is a life-and-death issue of a different sort. Black men, who are justifiably concerned about police bias and violence, have raised the issue of profiling and feeling unsafe wearing face coverings in public. And it’s not only men refusing to wear masks: one woman was even recorded after she cut a hole in her mask because she claims she couldn’t breathe well otherwise. (You know what else makes it hard to breathe?)

Those who are ignoring state guidelines (and common sense) because it might hurt their self-image, though, need to be reached. I hope the culture is not so far gone as to need a 1918-style “masks are manly” initiative, but at this point I’m open to anything. The issue is too important, the risks too great, to allow men’s narrow view of what it means to “be a man” to hurt other Americans.

We already know that the contemporary Trumpian brand of masculinity is bad for men and women. It’s unhealthy for young boys to internalize messages that they always need to be tough, even at the expense of their own health, and it’s bad for girls and women to be exposed to men who believe the only way to feel sure of themselves is to behave recklessly or violently. In the middle of one of the worst pandemics in U.S. history, the president’s cartoonish performance of masculinity is setting a horrible precedent, and putting American lives in danger. All for fear of, well, showing fear.

by Anonymousreply 39May 15, 2020 2:37 AM

Add conspiracy theories about wearing masks being more risky than not wearing them to the list

by Anonymousreply 40May 15, 2020 2:53 AM

[quote] And it’s not only men refusing to wear masks: one woman was even recorded after she cut a hole in her mask because she claims she couldn’t breathe well otherwise. (You know what else makes it hard to breathe?)

While cutting a hole in a mask is entirely stupid and counterproductive, it really isn't easy for some people to breathe well while wearing one. If you have Asthma or most lung diseases, wearing a mask can feel as though you are smothering. It can also trigger a person's claustrophobia. Even before this crisis, it was quite common in medical situations to see people fighting back when medical professionals would try to place a lifesaving oxygen mask on them, for instance.

41, at-risk groups (like those with lung diseases and Asthma) should've stayed at home the whole lock-down (and beyond) and rely on the kindness of others, like their loved ones, to supply them with food.

If you don't have anyone to buy you food? Tough luck. Wearing a mask for a few hours to get food is better than starving to death, don't you think? Or is dying from the Coronavirus, because you feel the need NOT to wear a mask the better solution?

by Anonymousreply 43May 15, 2020 6:06 AM

R43 Actually the whole point of wearing a mask, isn't to protect yourself, but others. If everyone else would wear a mask, those who couldn't would be safer to go out without one. Remember, it isn't just food, there are people with these conditions who still need to travel to doctor's appointments, to treat their chronic conditions. It isn't that those with lung diseases, asthma, or mask anxiety, feel the need NOT to wear a mask. I'm not talking about people who just refuse to wear one without reason.

by Anonymousreply 46May 15, 2020 5:40 PM

This is why the idiots are catching covid19 and dying more than women.

Straight men are fucking nasty. Most of them won't wash their hands after using the toilet, before they eat or even after working in the garage.

They wear the same clothes day after day and don't shower regularly.

Cleanliness, washing, mask wearing, thinking about others, consideration and common decency are ALL "threats" to their fragile masculinity and "gay".

That's also why most of these fat, ugly white men want to carry their stupid guns everywhere. They're pathetically insecure and easily threatened.

by Anonymousreply 47May 15, 2020 6:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 59May 15, 2020 11:32 PM

The new right wing talking points are that we have to reopen everything because it's causing people to be depressed and masks are triggering claustrophobia. I've seen these same excuses on other social media and from talk radio callers.

They are desperate to cling to any excuse to support Trump and the GOP's reckless decision to fling open the doors willy-nilly. Don't fall for it.

by Anonymousreply 60May 16, 2020 2:23 AM

[quote] R55 You obviously don't suffer from it. It isn't a made-up condition that people can just turn off because of a pandemic.

Actually, I do. but I am also mature enough to know anxieties about being hemmed in are nothing compared to the real danger of being infected.

[quote] Though, you do suffer from being a cunt.

I'd much rather be a cunt than a pathetic whinger.

by Anonymousreply 61May 16, 2020 3:13 AM

I don't suffer from it myself, but I have relatives who do and just putting on a mask gives them panic attacks. One of them, in the middle of a heart attack, punched a nurse in the face when she attempted to place an oxygen mask on them. Most people with actual claustrophobia cannot separate their anxiety and rational thought.
