Trump Feared Testing Too Many People for Virus Would Spook Stock Markets, Says Report

President Trump was wary of making preparations for the coronavirus pandemic because he was concerned doing so would sent the stock market into a panic, the Financial Times reports. In a quote attributed to an unnamed Trump confidant who is said to speak to the president frequently, it’s claimed: “Jared [Kushner] had been arguing that testing too many people, or ordering too many ventilators, would spook the markets and so we just shouldn’t do it... That advice worked far more powerfully on [Trump] than what the scientists were saying. He thinks they always exaggerate.” Elsewhere in the FT investigation into Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, an unnamed administration official is reported to have told the paper that trying to advise the president is like “bringing fruits to the volcano... You’re trying to appease a great force that’s impervious to reason.”

And he thought 30k deaths in NY in a matter of weeks would go unnoticed?

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2020 3:22 PM

Doesn’t take much deduction to put that together.

Notice ge says a “great force,” not a “terrible force.” That’s a Trump supporter for you. They know he isn’t reasonable & they don’t care. He’s still “great.”

he and his chief adviser on this, Jared fucking Kushner are so dangerously stupid it just boggles the mind that these fuckers are in the White House making public policy decisions. Motherfuck! If Trump had appointed really competent, really impressive people to run our response to the Pandemic, starting in fucking November/December, or even later, in February, and really got organized, PPE and testing etc. and acted serious about working with the States, and made brief, rare appearances to support state efforts, encourage people to quarantine, and then faded, his image would be one of leadership and competency (he could have ridden on the coattails of the truly competent and got a lot of credit) the damned stock market may have taken a dive, and a f ew aftershocks, but it would have stabilized. Instead, he gave in to Right Wing extremists and conspiracy theorists, and stupid "businessman" Jared, and lied, cheated, stole, and bullied. I hate him. I hate him SO MUCH.

Evil.

by Anonymousreply 5May 14, 2020 3:48 PM

That's all the chump had going for him. AND it was all about him. LOSER!

by Anonymousreply 6May 14, 2020 4:03 PM

That's Trump's consistent response to everything bad. He denies it. So just look back at all the other shit he has denied. Because it's all true.

The world is full of Jared Kushners, people whose ambition outstrip their abilities. Unfortunately ambition tends to win out and so here we are.

Is this why they canceled the at-home test?

Does anyone know why Moscow Mitch suddenly about-faced regarding his Obama accusations? Was he blackmailed? I couldn't find a thread on this topic.

by Anonymousreply 11May 16, 2020 10:52 PM

Of course he did

by Anonymousreply 12May 16, 2020 10:54 PM

R11, do you mean his admission that Obama did, in fact, leave a pandemic playbook for the Trump administration? I don’t see what else he could do. Mitch is onto cruelty and greed, sure, but he lacks Trump’s flair for denying reality.

IMO Trump was wandering perilously close to a scenario where Biden Obama and anyone else publicly connected to them would get investigated and hold hearings and possibly be charged with "crimes." That's why it took Barr and McConnell walking it back to shut it down...except for Miz Lindsey who is holding "hearings" but assures us Obama and Biden will not have to testify.

Why? you may ask? Because first of all both Obama and Biden would get tremendous amount of public air time. Both of them are extremely sympathetic people. Both of them are effective speakers. Both of them might welcome the opportunity to be on live TV and testify for hours and remind people of how smart and competent and intelligent they are.

The contrast with Trump would not accrue to Trump's benefit. Secondly, if the Senate permits this, t hen there is nothing to stop a Democratic Senate from going after Republican POTUS...(cough, cough.) They still hate Obama, and they are trying to protect Trump. Nothing's changed.

I know! It is just appalling R4. I remember Bloomberg saying that after Trump got elected he asked Bloomberg if he had any advice for him. Bloomberg told him "Surround yourself with the smartest people you know."

He said that Trump replied "But I'm the smartest person I know." And he truly believes that. You cannot penetrate that kind of stupidity. There is no hope. He must be eliminated from office.
