Hollywood is Desperately Trying Make These Actors/Singers Happen

Who are the celebrities that Hollywood is working very hard to make stick in the public consciousness?

by Anonymousreply 118July 9, 2020 4:59 PM

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2020 1:43 PM

Miles Teller. I don't care if he can act, I can smell the scent of douchebag off him from a thousand miles away, and his face looks like a potato.

by Anonymousreply 2May 14, 2020 1:58 PM

Tim O’Tay. I’m fucking sick of him.

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2020 2:02 PM

Two words: Adam Driver

by Anonymousreply 4May 14, 2020 2:03 PM

Ansel Elgort

by Anonymousreply 5May 14, 2020 2:14 PM

Poor Armie Hammer

by Anonymousreply 6May 14, 2020 2:14 PM

Margot Robbie

by Anonymousreply 7May 14, 2020 2:14 PM

Normani - man she fizzled - was pushed as the next Beyonce -

by Anonymousreply 8May 14, 2020 2:18 PM

I feel like Zac Efron was always being pushed in our faces for a while there. Granted, he was probably sucking a lot of cock to make that happen though.

by Anonymousreply 9May 14, 2020 2:22 PM

I second Adam Driver. OK actor, painful to look at.

by Anonymousreply 10May 14, 2020 2:32 PM

Adam Driver. And it doesn't get better when he smiles.

Dare I repeat it, since it has been going on for over a decade? Armie.

by Anonymousreply 11May 14, 2020 2:56 PM

Adam Driver has already happened, and people need to accept that. You don't need to like him or see his movies/shows, though.

Re: Miles Teller. I was loathe to think that the TOP GUN sequel was going to resurrect Teller's aborted career this summer, but the movie has been pushed back to end of year, and who knows what will happen at that point?

He's 33 and pretty much fucked up all the amazing breaks he's gotten (WHIPLASH, INSURGENT) with his horrible personality. We'll see.

by Anonymousreply 12May 14, 2020 3:00 PM

Armie Hammer, Dakota Johnson, Tye Sheridan, Ansel Elgort.

Adam has already happened.

by Anonymousreply 13May 14, 2020 3:26 PM

R3: He's so overexposed at this point that I hope he fades faster than Jennifer Lawrence.

by Anonymousreply 14May 15, 2020 1:43 AM

Henry Golding

by Anonymousreply 15May 15, 2020 2:16 PM

Have they given up on Alicia Vikander? That was one of the most disposable Oscar wins ever.

by Anonymousreply 16May 15, 2020 2:22 PM

R16 I don’t think so. Isn’t she in Tomb Raider 2?

Also rumored to co-star is...wait for it...Armie Hammer.

by Anonymousreply 17May 15, 2020 2:39 PM

Florence Puke.

by Anonymousreply 18May 15, 2020 3:03 PM

I hate when you see a newcomer in six movies all in one year. Hollywood moving heaven and earth for celebs that need a little pushing.

by Anonymousreply 19May 15, 2020 4:25 PM

Zendaya

by Anonymousreply 20May 15, 2020 4:26 PM

Oscar Isaac.

by Anonymousreply 21May 15, 2020 6:05 PM

I guess she's already happened but I'm so fucking sick of Margot Robbie. People like Stephanie Zacharek's stupid ass trying to pretend that she was BRILLIANT in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was laughable. She didn't do shit in Bombshell either. Yet they keep handing her nominations, and obviously a win will come soon.

by Anonymousreply 22May 15, 2020 6:28 PM

R22: She’s only getting roles because of her production company and/or her looks. Even she knows she has a short window before a new blond ingenue replaces her.

by Anonymousreply 23May 15, 2020 6:30 PM

r23 True. I guess in a way she's replaced JLaw, right? If so, then I take it back. I guess I can tolerate Margot as long as JLaw stays the fuck away.

by Anonymousreply 24May 15, 2020 6:34 PM

I think Robbie is a fine actress but no, she does not reinvent the wheel for me. She's quite good at inhabiting a persona fully and losing herself in that character--she's that kind of actor, and good for her. Very attractive, in a very conventional way.

But she is not an exciting personality and doesn't bring that much extra to a film. That special sauce, for lack of a better term, is what makes someone a STAR.

by Anonymousreply 25May 15, 2020 6:47 PM

Ana de Armas. She was in Knives Out (which was good) last year, and now she's going to be in the new James Bond movie [italicize]and[/italicize] a new Marilyn Monroe biopic [italicize]and[/italicize] with her new boyfriend Ben Affleck in his upcoming movie [italicize]and[/italicize] in a Knives Out sequel.

I can already tell that she will be like Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley, Rebel Wilson, and Scarlett Johansen before her. Doing too many things at once and having a major flop, but the studio heads like her (or want to fuck her), so she's still treated as relevant.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 26May 16, 2020 3:34 AM

R26: I've seen more than my fair share of embarrassing Hollywood PR relationships but her current stunt with Ben is arguably the most embarrassing. Either she's that desperate for international fame or she's with him for his connections.

by Anonymousreply 27May 16, 2020 3:46 AM

Damn, she looks like Tiffani Thiessen in that picture at R26. She was so pretty in Knives Out.

by Anonymousreply 28May 16, 2020 4:07 AM

well, it took them 10 years to finally make me "happen", so don't give it up so easily, just saying...

by Anonymousreply 29May 16, 2020 4:35 AM

Driver has already happened. Same with Robbie.

I vote for Zoe Kravitz

by Anonymousreply 30May 16, 2020 4:37 AM

I really don’t think anybody “happens” anymore. Nowadays it’s mostly just actors for hire.

by Anonymousreply 31May 16, 2020 4:42 AM

Bebe Rexha

by Anonymousreply 32May 16, 2020 4:59 AM

Any of the young actors of "Game of Thrones", not much talents or range on most of them, they are just not happening and the buzz is gone thanks to the terrible last season.

by Anonymousreply 33May 16, 2020 5:13 AM

I guess Kristen Bell has also already happened but it was hard to believe she kept getting roles with her close set eyes and lack of charm.

by Anonymousreply 34May 16, 2020 5:22 AM

Lily Collins.

by Anonymousreply 35May 16, 2020 5:33 AM

Chris & Liam Hemsworth deserve to be on this list. Jai Courtney too.

R2 Miles Teller can't act.

R26 I was never aware of her until Knives Out which was pretty lame and she was terrible. Wonder which whore house Hollywood pulled her from?

by Anonymousreply 36May 16, 2020 5:36 AM

I thought she was fine in Knives Out

by Anonymousreply 37May 16, 2020 6:00 AM

Denny Terrio.

by Anonymousreply 38May 16, 2020 6:36 AM

Sooooo many names here have already happened or are just fucking ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 39May 16, 2020 6:40 AM

Henry Cavill. Almost as obnoxious as DL's Henry Cavill Fangurrl.

by Anonymousreply 40May 16, 2020 6:46 AM

FINN WOLFHARD

by Anonymousreply 41May 16, 2020 6:51 AM

Every person on CW

by Anonymousreply 42May 16, 2020 8:19 AM

Ruby Rose Rita It's Fassbender/Vikander -- Ovah!

by Anonymousreply 43May 16, 2020 8:30 AM

^^*Rita Ora

by Anonymousreply 44May 16, 2020 8:31 AM

Dua Lipa. It's pleasant but highly derivative pop music pilfering from everything and everybody and passed through the filter of focus groups but, honestly, it's kind of faceless and if you hear it on the radio sandwiched between the songs of the people who have more personality, it's instantly forgettable.

by Anonymousreply 45May 16, 2020 10:56 AM

It’s funny about Adam Driver. Intellectually, all of you who don’t get the appeal are absolutely right. He does have a potato face and he always seems to be ever so slightly shambling along. But from the first time I saw him on Girls I wanted to know who he was. The only reason I kept watching episodes was because I liked watching him. It’s definitely a sexual thing.

by Anonymousreply 46May 16, 2020 11:39 AM

Olivia Munn

by Anonymousreply 47May 16, 2020 12:53 PM

The girls look so wispy and wan. The boys passive and Aspie.

They just look hungry.

by Anonymousreply 48May 16, 2020 1:40 PM

R47 The only person trying to make Olivia Munn happen is Olivia Munn.

by Anonymousreply 49May 16, 2020 1:42 PM

Olivia Munn pretty much happened before she blew the whistle on Brett Ratner.

by Anonymousreply 50May 16, 2020 1:47 PM

Halsey

by Anonymousreply 51May 16, 2020 3:25 PM

They've failed to make Olivia Wilde happen as an actress, now I guess they're going to try to make her happen as a director.

by Anonymousreply 52May 16, 2020 4:45 PM

R52: She’s a former Harvey girl

by Anonymousreply 53May 16, 2020 4:57 PM

"Olivia Munn pretty much happened before she blew the whistle on Brett Ratner."

No, she was always a wannabe

by Anonymousreply 54May 16, 2020 5:16 PM

Zoe Kravitz

by Anonymousreply 55May 17, 2020 12:21 AM

Tim o Tay. What is so earth shattering about this boy?

by Anonymousreply 56May 17, 2020 12:24 AM

Lana del Ray

by Anonymousreply 57May 17, 2020 12:30 AM

Lily Rose Depp.

by Anonymousreply 58May 17, 2020 2:24 AM

Getting the industry to force feed you to the public requires the same level of commitment as getting a job in Hollywood. You gotta fuck that agent, producer, director, etc.

by Anonymousreply 59May 17, 2020 1:18 PM

Lucas Hedges

by Anonymousreply 60May 17, 2020 1:33 PM

Jessica Chastain

by Anonymousreply 61May 25, 2020 6:15 PM

Jessica Chastain already happened.

by Anonymousreply 62May 25, 2020 6:17 PM

R62: I think they’re still trying to make her happen as a leading lady/box office star with mass appeal. She’s had flop after flop and her hypocrisy on feminism really affected her image.

by Anonymousreply 63May 25, 2020 6:18 PM

R60: Come on, the guy can act and he can't be more low key.

Yes, he has connections and was in a good bunch in Oscar nominated movies but he is only in the press when he is promoting his films

by Anonymousreply 64May 25, 2020 7:47 PM

R63, it sounds like you're a right-winger looking to bitch about feminism. I doubt the average person knows what her views are, or care. Her movies aren't hits, but she's respected by her peers and will continue to get roles

by Anonymousreply 65May 25, 2020 8:15 PM

Billie Eilish

by Anonymousreply 66May 25, 2020 8:23 PM

Billie Eilish has already happened. Having a #1 song and the best selling album of the past year cements that.

Everyone can thank DL icon Lens Dunham for why Adam Driver is a thing. Many of the SJW's on Twitter says he's the only decent part of Girls, lol.

As for who Hollywood is trying to make happen, that obnoxious child actor Jacob Tremblay and that shitty rapper Tekashi 69 are on the top of my list.

by Anonymousreply 67May 25, 2020 8:28 PM

Well, Tremblay has at least two hit movies which is way more than some adult actors Hollywood promotes relentlessly

by Anonymousreply 68May 25, 2020 8:34 PM

Figures the same person bitching about SJWs would pick on a child actor.

by Anonymousreply 69May 25, 2020 8:38 PM

R56, he's sexy and magnetic

by Anonymousreply 70May 25, 2020 8:41 PM

R70: I think he is too ambitious for his own good.

He was a very niche actor with loyal fans but he is not mainstream material and his whole pr relationship was one of the most ridiculous ones in recent years (and it's never good when a supposed good actor is unable to fake interest in his girlfriend)

by Anonymousreply 71May 25, 2020 8:43 PM

I kind of think the ship has sailed finally on Zac Efron. You don't even really hear that much about him anymore.

by Anonymousreply 72May 25, 2020 8:50 PM

There will not be another Hollywood superstar a la Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt. That era is over. The same thing is happening in the music industry.

by Anonymousreply 73May 25, 2020 8:58 PM

Tom Hardy as a A- list with Oscar baiting roles, sorry but he is not that good

by Anonymousreply 74May 26, 2020 2:35 AM

The worst example was Jude Law until Christmas Rock brought his career to a screeching halt.

by Anonymousreply 75May 26, 2020 3:29 AM

^ I swear I typed Chris Rock.

by Anonymousreply 76May 26, 2020 3:30 AM

Jon Hamm. Mad Men was 5 years ago. He is not the new Clooney or even close. Box office poison. The only thing that's keeping him famous now is he's a drunk with a supposedly big dick. And goes to the opening of an envelope.

by Anonymousreply 77May 26, 2020 3:35 AM

R72: And that only can be good for him. It's not like he is having trouble to get roles, and maybe less expossure will be good to solve all his issues

by Anonymousreply 78May 26, 2020 1:32 PM

R72: Count your blessings. Remember when the industry was shoving him down our throats.

by Anonymousreply 79May 26, 2020 1:39 PM

I hate to say it but the reality is Adam Driver is now officially a thing. I will say though I don’t think there’s any excitement about or public engagement with him.

by Anonymousreply 80May 26, 2020 1:41 PM

Adam Driver can act and he had several commercial hits and some films blessed by critics. He is in a good moment of his career.

He is not superstar material but if he chose carefully he could have a very good career

by Anonymousreply 81May 26, 2020 2:12 PM

As much as I hate the guy, DiCaprio is the last “star” to emerge. He’s had success in both commercial and critic friendly films. He’s also still marketed as a leading man/heartthrob even though he has zero chemistry with every female co-star. He really is the last movie star to come out of Hollywood even though he’s a hypocrite, creep, and douchebag.

by Anonymousreply 82May 26, 2020 2:26 PM

r76, What does Chris Rock have to do with Jude Law's career? Jude seems to be doing just fine, btw.

by Anonymousreply 83May 26, 2020 2:26 PM

R83: When Chris Rock hosted the Oscars in 2005, he jokingly asked why Jude Law was in everything. In 2004, Jude Law was in six movies and named Sexiest Man Alive. He was all over the place and his 2004 movies flopped at the box office. After Chris Rock’s joke, Jude Law’s career slowed down.

by Anonymousreply 84May 26, 2020 2:29 PM

R82 And closet case.

He most certainly is the last star to emerge. Jennifer Lawrence looked like she might be but she fizzled really quickly (thank God). And there will be no more 'stars'. It's series, or franchise films, or concepts that get people to watch stuff now.

by Anonymousreply 85May 26, 2020 2:29 PM

R85: I don’t even think he’s that great of an actor tbh.

by Anonymousreply 86May 26, 2020 2:35 PM

Jennifer Lawrence's trajectory closely mirrors Harvey Weinstein....everyone knows how she won her Oscar. Now nobody needs to pretend they want her anymore.

Nepotism is the family business in Hollywood and so they keep trying to push no talents like Dakota Johnson, Zoe Kravitz, the Will Smith kids on us.

How long did they try to make Rumer Willis a thing? Yeah that long...it took years before the public finally said enough.

by Anonymousreply 87May 26, 2020 2:45 PM

Jennifer Lawrence is a good actress. If blowing Harvey magically made you into an Oscar winner then tons of forgotten starlets like Gretchen Mol would have Oscars.

Sometimes DLers can't be objective towards anyone they dislike

And no one tried to make Rumer Willis a thing, she's better known for reality tv than for any actual role she had

by Anonymousreply 88May 26, 2020 4:32 PM

I think the one that they’ve worked the hardest at trying to make happen is Armie. He certainly has matinee idol looks and has worked with some of the most elite directors but he’s a no talent with zero charisma. Also I might be wrong but his trust fund baby, everything’s been handed to me status irks people. The industry never wanted to give up on a man that handsome but they also refused to accept that the public doesn’t give a shit about Armie Hammer.

by Anonymousreply 89May 26, 2020 4:58 PM

R88 Yes, she is a good actress and i'm pretty sure she'll make her come back, but it's pretty obvious that Weinstein pushed hard her career. Suddenly she was nominated every year.

I remember José Luis Garci who was nominated to foreign film (he won in the 80's) the same year Life is beautiful was the big favourite in that cathegory and he said Weinstein did everything to make their experience a nightmare. Life is beautiful was clearly the big big favourite in that cathegory but the rest of films even had problems to find distribution and the get into the cinemas.

And of course that explains why Roberto Benigni won where the other four actors were way better than him (he is perfectly ok in that movie and far from being the worst winner, but he is not Ian McEllen in Gods and monsters for sure)

by Anonymousreply 90May 26, 2020 5:26 PM

I'd say Tom Holland, but he's nice and sticky (and sweaty too, I expect).

by Anonymousreply 91May 26, 2020 5:28 PM

R90: No she’s completely over. She’s been gone too long and has had too many flops. By the time this is all over, nobody is going to care if she’s in a movie ever again. It also doesn’t help that she’s universally loathed by Hollywood and the public. She should take her millions and go out with some dignity.

by Anonymousreply 92May 26, 2020 6:06 PM

She isn't universally loathed by the public or by Hollywood. DLers just don't like her, so they spin their own narrative. All actors have had flops.

by Anonymousreply 93May 26, 2020 6:20 PM

JLaw is NOT a good actress. She was okay I'm Winter's Bone and that's it. She overacts in everything.

by Anonymousreply 94May 26, 2020 6:29 PM

Her Weinstein connections are going to haunt her forever. Also, I don't think the industry wants anything to do with her after the fake marriage.

by Anonymousreply 95May 26, 2020 6:50 PM

R95 Meryl had Weinstein connections too and everybody seems to forget that everytime.

J Law was loved at first but it was like an overdose, she was everywhere. If she wants a come back she needs character roles in good films to star

by Anonymousreply 96May 26, 2020 7:02 PM

How do you know the marriage is fake?

by Anonymousreply 97May 26, 2020 7:03 PM

A lot of people in Hollywood had connections to Weinstein. He was a powerful man who worked on a lot of projects. No one is holding that against her, except in dataloungeland

by Anonymousreply 98May 26, 2020 7:25 PM

Billie Eyelash

by Anonymousreply 99May 26, 2020 8:41 PM

R96: Meryl has permanent A list status. I think she's an overrated, hypocritical bitch but she'll be a legend forever. In Meryl's case, her Weinstein connections don't matter.

by Anonymousreply 100May 26, 2020 9:25 PM

R95, she is not the only one.....

I don't get the hate for Harvey's girls. They wanted a career and they followed the "rules", they didn't make the rules, I'm pretty sure they didn't enjoy fucking that troll, they are not victims, just players, they followed the rules and some of them won.

by Anonymousreply 102May 26, 2020 10:03 PM

Gotta love the freepers like r101 who love to bash "evil liberal Hollywood" but support Mr Pussygrabber

by Anonymousreply 103May 26, 2020 10:08 PM

I don't mind too much because I do think she's cute, but: Elle Fanning.

by Anonymousreply 104May 26, 2020 10:11 PM

R103

I'm not American, I'm not based in the US. 'Liberal HW' , yes, that's the image but in real life people in the industry seem everything but 'liberal'. Just see how gays and ethnic minorities are treated in the business and you will understand what I mean.

And I do not support Trump, Boris or Bolsonaro or any other populist you can think of.

by Anonymousreply 105May 26, 2020 10:31 PM

Ana de Armas works really hard to make herself happen. She only dates actors, directors, or talent agents.

by Anonymousreply 106May 27, 2020 5:48 PM

The days of people going to see a movie because of a particular actor are over.

by Anonymousreply 107May 29, 2020 6:22 AM

I think there are a few exceptions still - Dwayne Johnson comes to mind - but I agree they are exceptions R107.

by Anonymousreply 108June 1, 2020 4:40 PM

r108 The Rock has had his share of movies underperform. I think people just overestimate his box office draw because the Fast and Furious franchise is popular .

by Anonymousreply 109June 1, 2020 4:49 PM

He's had flops, although most of those movies would have flopped even harder if he hadn't been in them.

by Anonymousreply 110June 1, 2020 5:33 PM

Zoey Deutch - she's in everything (even the lead in some things) but still not A-List.

by Anonymousreply 111June 25, 2020 6:19 PM

There was a big push to make stars out of Ellie Klemper and Mindy Kaling from The Office but, hopefully, that's fizzled out.

by Anonymousreply 114July 8, 2020 5:27 PM

Hailey Baldwin Bieber is desperately trying to make herself happen.

by Anonymousreply 115July 8, 2020 10:17 PM

Billy Porter.

by Anonymousreply 116July 8, 2020 10:56 PM

No one will ever love Mindy Kaling as much as Mindy Kaling. Seriously, I wanted very much to like her and her sitcom, but there's something essentially obnoxious (and unfunny) about her.

Can we finally agree that Rebel Wilson's sell-by date has long past? It's astonishing what a long, unsuccessful run she's had. Time is up.
